The image of one of the grandest views in Yosemite, a double page (pp.12&13) spread of Tenaya Canyon seen from Olmstead Point, is printed BACKWARDS!!

Where were the editors and proofreaders when this travesty rolled off the press?? Why did the author not recognize this??

Excellent Overview.......2007-08-23

This book is an excellent general atlas with beautiful maps and helpful descriptions of interesting areas for each country. It is mainly an atlas first and therefore can not go into full descriptions of every area of interest or else it would be much too large and expensive. If you need a more thorough travel guide I would suggest you purchase one for an individual country, which can go into much more detail. For what this is intended for though it its a real treat. Great book.

Only average for either atlas or travel guide.......2007-03-30

I'm a huge fan of maps and an avid traveler, so I was eager to get my hands on this Atlas from the publishers of the Eyewitness Guides series.

Unfortunately, it's disappointingly mediocre. The maps are light on detail and rather plain, the travel information is superficial, and about half the book is index pages for the low-detail maps. So it turns out to be both a poor atlas, and a not very good travel guide.

It's not terrible either, but not worth the money. If you'd like to browse through country information from a traveler's perspective, try Lonely Planet the Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World . There are also many fine atlases out there, such as the classic from National Geographic National Geographic Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition.

This one is not recommended.

Good if it is what you're looking for.......2006-07-01

This book has a very specific purpose. It's a good book for browsing and doing some quick and interesting couch traveling to places with nice scenery and thats about it. I would not recommend it as a reference. So I'm not sure that "The Traveler's Atlas" is really a good title. But I guess I would have gone with it over the more honest "Some Interesting and Pretty Places a Few People Visited and Researched".

It nicely highlights and handful of beautiful areas of the world and gives a thorough 2-3 page description of the experience of visiting there and the history. However, the places seem to be chosen based on their scenery alone. So if you're looking for events or cultures, they don't come up too often. Some locations are streotypical "Places you must see" and some aren't as obvious. I like that it seems to be written by people who have actually been to each place and that the pictures are pretty but not over the top. Kind of like pictures an experienced amateur would take on a trip themselves.
This makes a good present to someone with aspirations of unique travel, someone who thinks they have already seen everything, or someone who appreciates wonders of the world.

Nice book, but missing a lot........2006-04-01

This is a nice coffee table book, but leaves out the vast majority of South America. I could not believe Rio de Janeiro and other major places where not listed. Could be a bit more extensive.

This is much better than "1,000 places to see...".......2006-02-25

If you are building your "lifelist" this is the book for you. It is much better at giving the reader a sense of the destination than the "1,000 places to see..." book.

This book is full of Typos! Someone should have gone through and checked the information in this book, even spots on the map are incorrect.

Great concept, disappointing photos and descriptions.......2003-12-30

I am disappointed by this book. The paper quality does not do justice to the photos. Colors and defintion are washed out. Furthermore, while I only skimmed through the book I noticed several typos.

Excellent Book for Beginners and Experts.......2006-07-19

Once again, Tom Rosenbauer delivers a clearly-written, practical, and insightful book on fly-fishing. This time he looks at tying and gives many practical tips--especially on the use of tools and materials. For example, a beginner is hit with all these tools--which ones are best, which ones to use, etc. Rosenbauer gives clear descriptions of which tools are most useful, what they're used for, and which ones you don't really need. At the same time, he gives tips from his experience--also useful for the expert.

The bulk of the book is, of course, the fly-tying receipes. He provides many photographs of each step in making a fly. The many photos are probably more than the expert will need, but very important for a beginner. For the expert, you get many great fly receipes.

Overall, highly recommended fly-tying guide.

Simply the Best Fly-Tying Guide .......2005-10-12

The plain English explanations and simple, step-by-step directions make this the best fly-tying guide for the novice tier. It's also nice that the author provides substitutions for materials that the tier just might not have lying around.

I throughly enjoy working from this book, and have become an avid fly-tier working with Mr. Rosenbauer. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in getting into fly tying.

Best I've Seen for the beginner.......2002-12-28

I just began to investigate the world of fly tying. This was the third or fourth book I read in detail, and the only one that provided enough detail to actually tie some simple flies correctly.

It provides a good combination of clarity on specific techniques, and step-by-step instructions on tying several patterns. Both the photos and the text are clear and easy to follow. Also, things are not made more tricky than they actually are, a problem with some of the other books.

I also just bought the Benchside Reference, which I agree with all is an indispensible reference. I could not put it down after I got it from the library, and that is saying a lot for a reference book. I think with the two, the typical beginner could tie a decent Wooly Bugger in an hour -- I did.

An excellent book covering nearly all basics.......2001-07-20

The book shows in very clear colour detail the upright (hair & feather) wing, parachute, klinchammer, dubbing, hackle and has a vast number of fly patterns. This book is very good for beginners and those who are experimenting and starting to advance. Reading this book should give anyone a good strong basis on which to build.
