Book Description
This book provides an ample coverage of theoretical and experimental state-of-the-art work as well as new trends and directions in the biometrics field. It offers students and software engineers a thorough understanding of how some core low-level building blocks of a multi-biometric system are implemented. While this book covers a range of biometric traits including facial geometry, 3D ear form, fingerprints, vein structure, voice, and gait, its main emphasis is placed on multi-sensory and multi-modal face biometrics algorithms and systems. "Multi-sensory" refers to combining data from two or more biometric sensors, such as synchronized reflectance-based and temperature-based face images. "Multi-modal" biometrics means fusing two or more biometric modalities, like face images and voice timber. This practical reference contains four distinctive parts and a brief introduction chapter. The first part addresses new and emerging face biometrics. Emphasis is placed on biometric systems where single sensor and single modality are employed in challenging imaging conditions. The second part on multi-sensory face biometrics deals with the personal identification task in challenging variable illuminations and outdoor operating scenarios by employing visible and thermal sensors. The third part of the book focuses on multi-modal face biometrics by integrating voice, ear, and gait modalities with facial data. The last part presents generic chapters on multi-biometrics fusion methodologies and performance prediction techniques.

Book Description
In this volume the contributions provide the reader with full details of the development and structure of the nervous system both at the synaptic level and at the neuronal/interneuronal level. It provides details about aspects which insects have developed independently and, more importantly, aspects which they have in common with other classes. We know more about the detailed structure and function of the insect CNS than that of any other group of animals. Since the structure and circuitry are the major part in determining CNS function in motor control and coordinated movement, the insects lead the way over mammals and other vertebrates. This volume gives a clear and up-to-date account of the present state of knowledge and will be of value for many years to come.
Book Description
This broad treatise, published in three volumes, provides a systematic overview of the biological aspects and problems of hu-man growth and development from conception to full maturity. The first volume of this series, in three parts, is devoted to the rapidly expanding field of brain development. World-wide contributions touch on physiological, biochemical and structural aspects of de-velopment in humans, and in animals where appropriate. The text is richly accompanied by illustrations and references and is of interest to researchers and medical specialists.

Book Description
This book comprises a selection of review papers and original research from leading scientists with interests as diverse as the psychology of music perception and inner-ear biology. Rather than attempting a complete coverage of the vast field of hearing research, the book probes the subject
with a series of in-depth papers that deal with the most exciting developments in each discipline. The result is a multidisciplinary sketch of the field that should act as both a useful reference and a stimulating basis for discussion among research workers and advanced students in the fields of
hearing biophysics and physiology.

Description:
There is growing evidence that the visual processing of human body stimuli is particular and distinct from that of other objects. This is due to implicit knowledge of anatomical and biomechanical constraints of the human body. The question arises whether body stimuli in which biomechanical constraints are violated are processed in the same way as realistic bodies. This study investigated the neural mechanisms of anatomically plausible and implausible body stimuli. Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded in healthy participants during mental rotation of body parts. Subjects were shown pictures of body parts or whole bodies in which one element (finger, arm) could be anatomically accurate or inaccurate (e.g., left forearm attached to right upper arm). Furthermore, the body parts were rotated in 7 different orientations, from 0^o to 180^o in 30^o increments, resulting in some possible and some impossible positions of the body parts. Analysis of the 123-channel ERPs was carried out by determining the successive segments of stable map topographies and comparing them between conditions. A particular segment appeared in the case of anatomically impossible postures at 190-230 ms followed by a segment reflecting mental rotation at 310-380 ms. Anatomically implausible positions are thus detected at a very early stage, before mental rotation occurs. Source estimations derived from the topographic data indicated that left occipital, bilateral frontal and two medial areas were activated in the case of impossible postures, whereas left parietal regions were strongly activated during mental rotation. This result contrasts with mental rotation of objects, which is considered to be a right parietal process.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2007-09-12
If you plan to travel Europe this book is a must have, especially if you are interested in history and the museums. It gives tips on how to get tickets without standing in long lines and other tidbits a tourist would not know. I found it to be very time saving and helpful. It definitely will increase my enjoyment while I'm on vacation.
Rick Steves' Europe 101: History and Art for the Traveler.......2007-07-30
I love reading the Rick Steves' travel books and was very pleasantly surprised by my new understanding of European History and how it relates to art after reading this book. Rick Steves puts everything into perspective and connects art and history in a clear and concise manner. As someone who didn't appreciate European History as a student, I have found this book to be a great tool to re-educate myself and feel I now have a better understanding of the art I will see while traveling in Europe!
You should Buy it!!.......2007-06-09
I was searching for a book like this for months. Already a fan of Rick Steves, I picked this book up and was more than happy with my purchase. This is a fantastic book to learn history or to learn about art. I used it to read while traveling Europe, but would read it as a leisure read as well. The photos are impressive, but more impressive are the diagrams and timelines to help meld it all together.
A touch of culture and history.......2007-05-18
Yes...if you want to travel to Europe, you should know what is written in this guide.
I found it very usefull and interesting, I am not a guy that are used to read about history and art.
Could Have Gotten 5 Stars, Except..........2005-10-04
If the entire book had been written like the first half I'd have given this book 5 stars without hesitation. Unfortunately, as others have observed, when he got to the Modern World Rick blew it.
The book is subtitled "History and Art for the Traveler." For the first 2/3rds or so of the book Rick stuck to the subject and the information was great. A wonderful overview of the early history of Europe and the evolution of art and architecture from ancient Egypt up until WWI. You don't get a lot of details, but as an overview it is well-written and fascinating. Just the sort of background that a traveller needs to really appreciate what he is seeing.
Once he got past WWI, though, it seems that Rick just couldn't stop himself from tossing in his personal political observations. Of course, politics and history are closely tied, so some political information is useful and necessary to understanding history. Good historians always include some political information. Sadly, Rick does not provide us with some political information. What he does is infuse all too many passages with his personal politics. At one point he includes a several-pages long dissertation that is nothing but a political rant--completely out of place in a book that is SUPPOSED to be about history and art for the traveller!
My other complaint about the book is that in some ways he is a bit of an art snob. He basically says that you don't have a right to criticize art if you don't understand it. He offers an analogy, saying that you can't appreciate the beauty of a '56 Chevy if you don't know a Volvo from an Edsel. I'm sorry, but that is simply not true. It is quite easy to have a deep appreciation for a '56 Chevy without know anything about Volvos or Edsels, or any other cars for that matter!
If no other car had ever existed, the '56 Chevy Belair would still be a thing of beauty. And you most certainly don't need to know anything about engines or transmissions to see that.
Having offered my complaints, I still give it three stars, because there is still a lot of useful information here. I would read up until the section on the Modern World. From there, skip to the description of Britain. Then read the section on art appreciation.
Even with its short-comings I think this book is worth the cover price. It's a good book. If Rick had stuck to the subject it would have been a great book.

Only Theoretical Help in Public Speaking - Not Practical.......2005-06-26
The first few tracks of the audio CD does an excellent job of identifying all of the fears of public speaking, HOWEVER the majority of advice given in this book is theoretical. The book goes into stating the individual step (the theorectical help) then gives pseudo-testimonials of how her steps have been implemented by former students towards giving a great speech.
There are seven primary steps, followed by several sub-steps. As you attempt to follow along you begin to forget what step you are on. I felt that the organization of the book was not effective and the advice given was based on theory. When it came down to it, there were only a few practical steps on getting over the fear. This book would be the equivalent to a book on Getting Rich which states "make wise investments that will only double your money" but neglecting to spell out what type of investments to make. I would not recommend this book as a way to overcome the fear of public speaking. Just my $0.02.
Not Helpful For Me.......2004-06-01
Yes, the 7 steps can teach people in all types of careers and lifestyles to improve their oral communications skills but some of her methods are a bit "out there". For example: learning to focus on your voice as an instrument. The CD includes examples and anecdotes from Wilder's own work, and a number of exercises to help the reader implement the ideas set forth. If you're looking to overcome your fear of public speaking, join Toastmasters and skip this CD.
An effective program for overcoming your fears..........2004-01-19
As part of my Lotusphere preparation, I've been reading 7 Steps To Fearless Speaking by Lilyan Wilder. She's a communication consultant who has coached a number of broadcast correspondents. In this book, she outlines seven steps to take in order to become a more effective public speaker. The seven steps are: Experience Your Voice; Get A Response And Structure Your Thoughts; Establish A Dialogue; Tap Your Creativity; Learn To Persuade; Achieve Your Higher Objective; and Give The Gift Of Your Conviction.
It's not a "short-cut" or "quick fix" book, in that she has exercises that you need to work through to get the most benefit from the program. However, if you're willing to work at it and follow the path she lays out, you will emerge as a more confident and composed speaker when you find yourself called upon to speak in front of a group.
Bunch of useless tips for fearful speakers.......2000-11-11
I purchased this book expecting a book that would ease my anxiety of public speaking, and Ms Wilder certainly "claims" in her introduction that this book is to help you become less fearful, but the tips actually are for speakers who are ALREADY fearless but just need to improve their speech skills: For example: Get immediate response from audience. You know, the last thing I want to do in a presentation is further prolong it by asking what they think of it. My plain goal, Ms Wilder, is just to complete a mediocre if dull presentation WITHOUT anxiety, not get responses from my audience and so forth. I can hardly find any good books on stage fright. They either don't help at all or are off the subject.
This book will build your confidence in speaking........2000-10-31
I recommend this book as one of your first books to read on public speaking along with Simply Speaking by Peggy Noonan. 7 Steps is more complete and more like a text book to read. Wilder is a writer that uplifts you and encourages you rather than talking down to you like some other speach books by well known authors. Interestingly, the book begins and ends with your voice as an instrument of vocal production. Most other speech book writers don't address how to make your voice sound better. They take the: "Live with it approach." Great singers practice and practice on the sound itself. Why not speakers. May be they don't know any better or their publisher says: "too complicated." This author knows but does not overwhelm you. One speaking book was so hard to follow on vocal production I had to set it aside for a while. Wilder made the exercises so easy to follow that I was not overwhelmed. Most of the book is about developing a content filled speech and then how to deliver it. This book will build your confidence in speaking.
