Good book.......2007-10-15
This is a real helpful book with a lot of key phrases. I really recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn the basic phrases.
Lonely Planet Korean Phrase Book.......2007-10-05
This pocket book has alot of great info packed inside. Something for almost everything that might come up. I am very happy with it
Good book - difficult language.......2007-07-27
I have been in Seoul off and on - for business - for the past year. Despite rumors to the contrary, I find this an extremely difficult language. Most Koreans under the age of thirty have a working knowledge of English. Ordering coffee at Starbuck's is certainly not a problem, restaurants are often a problem, department stores pretty impossible. Once you get used to the sections in this book, at the very least you can point. Certain phrases are just good to know. It may seem stupid, but being able to say "Hello" or "Thank you" is extremely endearing to Koreans and it seems to me that this is the very least we can do. The size makes it easy to carry around and it's the least expensive phrase book I've found.
Satisfied customer.......2007-01-20
This book was very useful. It is laid out well and has detailed information about what you needed to know to get around in Korea.
Poorly organized and not very handy.......2006-03-17
If your looking for an easy-reference, traveler's phrasebook...this certainly isnt for you. Buying this as a quick-reference guide to help me get through Korea for 2 weeks, I was rather dissapointed that all the phrases are kind of scattered throughout the book, while the whole first half is dedicated to grammar. If I wanted to actually learn the language, I'd have bought a text book, not a "phrase" book. At any rate, the organization of the book certainly made it hard to find what I was looking for when I needed it. And, while everything else is over descriptive, theres a very frustratingly small amount of info on numbers. They go into a lot of depth about the etimology of the numbers, but say only a few word on when to use what(i.e. these numbers are used over 100....well, how do I say 11,225...do I use all "Sino-korean" or do I mix in "Pure Korean">) In a country whose currency is set up such that few things cost lower than 1,000 won, a bit more explanation on numbers over 100 would be appreciated...and the "Quick Reference" number guide on the inside-back cover, since it only goes up to 100, is entirely worthless. Oh well, I guess I should've know since it's Lonely Planet.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful little book.......2007-05-15
Besides my Lao Dictionary, this is *the* Lao book I carry around daily with me. I wish I could post a photo of my worn out dog-eared copy. I agree w/ the one reviewer who said the transliteration is a little wacky, however the Lao script is generally "spot on". (I'll mention transliteration with Lao is a less than exact science) It's one of the few if only books outside of the books attempting to teach Lao that handle things like Grammar.. very handy for the traveler. It also throws some Lao culture in for good measure to make sure you don't do something offensive to the local people. Great book, worth the money and besides... it's so small you can fit it in your pack/bag pretty easy.
transliteration makes lao even more complex than it is.......2003-12-04
The Lonely Planet phrasebooks are usually a great help travelling around the world. This one however turned out to be creating more problems than solving them. The transliteration is so weird that you actually have to learn two new languages before pronouncing anything closely right. I tried the book with several english speaking lao persons and lao speaking native english speakers while travelling around the country and all had problems with the transliteration. Nothing is like you would naturally pronounce it. For example who would say Khoj if you see Khawy?
Helpful is the lao bit so you can point, in the end its how I got around. A pity, there are much better transliterations around.
Lao Phrasebook.......2002-03-04
Very good book, especially for someone that don't understand a lot of English. They could always use as reference anywhere they go. Again, good book and excellent choice for someone who wants
to learn English. [reasonable] price and great book, what can I say.
Nifty little phrasebook.......2001-02-16
The Lonely Planet phrasebooks have come a long way since the days when the foreign script portion was merely hand-written in the space beside the romanized portion. The Lao phrasebook is representative of that new generation, and it is pretty impressive. Along with all the usual categories of phrases one would expect to see (greetings, directions, lodging, food, shopping, health, numbers, dates, emergencies, etc.), the splendidly informative introduction provides an interesting background on the spoken language and script, followed by a great section on pronunciation and grammar. There are interesting cultural notes dispersed throughout the book, and a vocabulary list at the end. Its compact size makes it ideal to carry in one's pocket. On the down side the marking system used in the romanized portion to indicate Lao tones is a little confusing and under-explained, but all-in-all a great little phrasebook.
It's a very through pocket book that can guide you in Laos.......1999-02-12
This is an excellent book for those who wish to travel to Laos, or even those who wish to begin learning lao in small steps. I purchased this book in order to learn the language at a quicker and more simplified pace. It contains not only basic phrases that one might need to know in order to conduct ones self in the main parts of Laos but also be able to learn some of the country's culture as well. Even though studying an entirely new language can be laborious, Mr. Cummings has made it easy for anyone to be bilingual, even multi-lingual.

GREAT!.......2001-10-09
I HAVE USED MANY PHRASE BOOKS IN THE PAST, BUT THIS ONE IS EXCEPITONAL. THE GRAMMAR SECTION IS THE MOST COMPLETE OF ANY I'VE SEEN. THE PRINT IS EASY TO READ. THERE ARE TIPS AND NOTES THROUGH OUT THE BOOK. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Okay for its price.......1999-01-08
The pocket size makes it easy to carry while travelling. But because of its size, the fonts are small! But the book tries to put in culture and extra infor that can make refering to it difficult when the situation is urgent. The book is divided into numerous chapters like greetings, transport, shopping, restaurants etc and have a glossary of English to Korean words at the back for easy reference. Categorise by statements which is followed by the romanised version for pronouciation and then the korean characters at the side. Its good so you can point to the korean characters for communication if the pronouciation is too much. The problem with it is it does not have a korean to English glossary so only English speakers can use it.

Book Description
Upon its publication, George Seldes's
The Great Thoughts instantly took its place as a classic--a treasure house of the seminal ideas that have shaped the intellectual history of the world down through the ages. Seldes, a pivotal figure in the history of American journalism and a tireless researcher, spent the better part of his extraordinary lifetime compiling the thoughts that rule the world, casting his net widely and wisely through the essential works of philosophy, poetry, psychology, economics, politics, memoirs, and letters from the ancient Greeks to the modern Americans.
Now Seldes's splendid and important work has been revised and updated to include the great thoughts that have changed our world in the decade since the book's first appearance. Quotations from leaders as varied as Nelson Mandela, Lech Walesa, Yitzak Rabin, Newt Gingrich, and Jesse Jackson reflect the radical shifts in the world political scene. Toni Morrison and Cornel West speak out on the enduring vitality of African-American culture. Alvin Toffler and Arthur C. Clarke give us a glimpse into the future. Gloria Steinem and Monique Wittig define the motives and the goals of late twentieth-century feminism. Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, and Wallace Stegner ponder the meaning of wilderness in an increasingly populated and industrialized world. These and scores of other thinkers in all major disciplines have added their voices to this new edition of
The Great Thoughts.
USA Today praised the first edition of
The Great Thoughts as "a browser's delight." The work of a lifetime, brought up-to-date to reflect the global upheaval of the past decade,
The Great Thoughts stands alone as an enduring achievement and an invaluable resource.
Customer Reviews:
THERE'S A GRAD SCHOOL IN MY BATHROOM.......2007-07-03
THE GREAT THOUGHTS by George Seldes has occupied a privileged position on my toilet tank for over ten years. I literally have read it until it is falling apart. Though I have earned graduate degrees in more than one field, no school could nourish the expansiveness of thinking that has occurred after contemplating four or five quotes from this book each time I take a rest-stop in the bathroom. I recently purchased several copies for my graduating high school seniors and labeled them, "FOR BATHROOM USE ONLY," hoping to carry forth this esteemed tradition. If you love your mind (and the minds of your children) you will buy this book and keep it in that special place you find yourself resting and recharging throughout the day -- your kitchen, your patio table, or next to your favorite easy chair... Mr. Seldes spent twenty-five years compiling these quotes. Every one of them is a kind of doorway into that greatness of mind we all can cultivate over time. It is without question the most elegant and extensive book of its type ever written.

Great Reference Tool but Often Puzzling .......2006-07-14
Seldes's work on this book is admirable. It is a good tool for finding what notable people had to say about most things. The index is useful for just such research, and the value in that is that this volume has a way of directing you to further material you may need. As a book of aphorictic expression, Seldes's Great Thoughts is entertaining too. It is a worthy read from cover to cover just to see what he thought "great" enough to include. I found the alphabetical-by-author format practical and, as said, the index works well for searching out subject material. What I find strange about the book is its puzzling tendency to value some patently impractical thoughts that are clearly not "great" or even all that influential, on the surface anyway, as well the absence of some historically significant material. No doubt Seldes had his logic, political and social, and that is also an interesting aspect of reading the book.
politcally liberal great thoughts.......2006-01-06
I bought the first edition of this book when I was 16 and have destroyed it through use over the years. His great thoughts are all of a progressive nature, and show modern conservatives in an ugly light.
Seeing who is touted as the new additions to the new edition confirms my view that while a good book, it is ridiculously slanted. Deeply disappointing.
Of great interest is that George Seldes was a grandaddy of journalism. One wonders what light his stories were presented to the public in.
There are great thoughts but some are not great at all .......2004-11-11
This gathering of quotations is a tribute to Seldes who loved to read and think and gather the best of what he thought. But all the thoughts here are far from great, and much the great great majority of what is ' great in thought ' is not here, in part because aphorisms, small sentences and paragraphs can take us only so far in thought. To develop a line of thought, or a whole argument, or a real essay in thought is something which cannot be done in a brief remark. "Sayings " as the saying goes" are not Literature" Or rather "not the greatest Literature"
Nonetheless there is a lot of good fare here to be dipped into and tasted. I would only warn that much of it taken out of context loses its strength and effect. And then too much is trite and trivial. It seems to be that other gatherings of quotations are far more successful, including Barlett's Quotations, the Viking Book of Aphorisms ed. Auden, Kronenberger, Safire's Advice books.
S"
A Good Compilation of The Greatest of All Thoughts........2004-04-16
The story behind Seldes' gathering up these quotes and ideas, malaprops and famous last words are as interesting as the quotes themselves. After a glorious career as a world renown journalist and essayist, at age 70 he began to cull the ideas that helped shape Western Civilization. That beginning was in 1960. He forwarded the finished document to the publisher in 1984. He was ninty-four at the time. And the work became one of the best selling books of it's kind ever. The editors had to step in to pare down the number of pages he had of Freud passages from 40 pages to 20. Seldes could not easily part with some of the Freud citations. Editors have a raison d'etre, afterall. Aldous Huxley forwarded the idea that civilization's grand pronouncements and great ideas could be tempered by some grand pronouncements and not so great ideas--so, along side Emerson and Mandela in Seldes work, one may find Hitler and Castro. Shakespeare and the Bible were avoided as references...far too many quotes the author has noted. Plus, there are concordances of each which can give the reader a more thorough coverage than what Seldes can offer.I have always been able to open the book up anywhere and read some thought provoking idea. That's why I enjoy it so much: it's good for the casual browser. Also, it acts as an appetite whettor to those who are exposed to, say, the 3 or 4 citations from Nietsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra and feel as if they wish to read more. My advice, overall, to those who will listen has always been--"Open your mind. Open a book and read". This volume of The Great Thoughts will help you enjoy your journey.

Product Description
Masters of the Mystical Rose has been meticulously researched and gathers together the scattered pieces of the puzzle of history to form a meaningful picture. These stunning insights reveal how the Masters have constantly assisted with the development of civilization and the destiny of mankind.
Customer Reviews:
A League of its own.......2006-02-23
I am a big fan of Maree's books, I started with her 2nd book 'The Dove, the Rose and the Sceptre' and have since discovered her first work, the 'Masters and the Mystical Rose'.
This book pieces together a thoroughly detailed overview of the the Grail Family and their origins (the Grail family as referenced in the Da vinci Code).
I thoroughly recommend this book for those who seek truth beyond the myths. This book provides answers to intriguing mysteries,(such as who the real Merlin and King Arthur were; who the real Shakespeare was; who the Essenes' Teacher of Righteousness was; the prominent role of the Father of the Family of the Holy Grail; how the names of Mary and Anna originated in the Holy Grail family; who the real Joseph of Arimathea was), and is in a league of its own.
It is obvious from the commencement of the book, that the author has spent many years researching and the honest approach in her writing is very refreshing.
