Book Description
When Oxford archeologist Mensun Bound—dubbed the “Indiana Jones of the Deep” by the Discovery Channel—teamed up with a financier to salvage a sunken trove of fifteenth-century porcelain, it seemed a dream enterprise. The stakes were high: The Hoi An wreck lay hundreds of feet down in a typhoon-prone stretch of water off the coast of Vietnam known as the Dragon Sea. Raising its contents required saturation diving, a crew of 160, and a fleet of boats. The costs were unprecedented. But the potential rewards were equally high: Bound would revolutionize thinking about Vietnamese ceramics, and his partner would make a fortune auctioning off the pieces. Hired as the project’s manager, Frank Pope watched the tumultuous drama of the Hoi An unfold. In Dragon Sea he delivers an engrossing tale of danger, adventure, and ambition—a fascinating object lesson in what happens when scholarship and money join forces to recover lost treasure.

Dragon Sea - a Riveting Read.......2007-08-17
I loved this book! Frank Pope opens a window to the complex aquatic battleground of treasure hunters and marine arachaeologist, where ambition, gold fever and extreme pressures test men to the limit - physically, mentally and ethically. An excellent true life adventure, bravely told.
Dragon Sea.......2007-07-24
It is a rare writer that can document without dryness, dramatize without histrionics. Frank Pope has managed to span the gap. Dragon Sea provides both an intellectual discussion of marine archeology and artifact without getting bogged down in academic quicksand. He also provides enough on-scene sweat and nerves to keep the reader wondering what's around the next corner from beginning to end. It is a thoroughly enjoyable book and a wealth of information for diving and archeological punters like myself. I had always wondered about the DB29 disaster. Mr. Pope opened a window on it for me without veering off topic.
A book like this should have been written earlier!.......2007-04-23
I thank Frank Pope for writing such a powerful book on the tragic fate of the Hoi An Hoard. Judging from the dearth of book on this important archaeological discovery and the fascinating aspects of Vietnamese ceramics, the book is indeed very timely and does some justice those treasures.
I picked up this book by accident and was riveted for the whole afternoon, until the very last sentence. Pope had a unique perspective on the whole project, and the book has a great balance between more action-based narrative and probing thoughts on the dilemma of money vs. knowledge, as the reader is drawn into the tumultuous months in the sea during the excavations.
I just hope that everyone reading this will appreciate such discovery, and also the importance of preserving the treasures of humankind varied past.
A top pick for a wide range of collections........2007-04-12
DRAGON SEA: A TRUE TALE OF TREASURE, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND GREED OFF THE COAST OF VIETNAM comes from an archaeologist dubbed the 'Indiana Jones of the Deep' by popular TV, who teamed up with a financier to salvage sunken treasure in Vietnam's Dragon Sea. No small venture, this required a fleet of ships and a crew of 160: their efforts would not only result in success but would change thinking about Vietnamese arts. Readers needn't be archaeology students to appreciate this: epic action and adventure reads with the drama of fiction but includes all facts - including insights on Vietnamese culture and arts - making it a top pick for a wide range of collections.
A Real Page Turner.......2007-03-09
Some years ago, I happened on several Ebay auctions of blue and white covered jars and bowls which were part of the Hoi An Hoard. The description said they were 500 years old and had been recovered from the bottom of the South China Sea. I did some quick Internet reading on the Hoi An Hoard and my interest was sparked. I bought several lots of the beautiful pottery which had rested on the sea floor since before Columbus came to the New World. (From reading Dragon Sea I now know that they are pieces of lesser interest and beauty!)
I recently read that a book had been written about the salvage operation. I quickly ordered Dragon Sea. I read it just as quickly. The story of the Hoi An Hoard is a well written, fascinating tale full of bad guys, good guys and really over worked guys. It is the tale of fortunes won and fortunes lost by gambling on the sea and its hidden treasures. Author Frank Pope, who was actually involved in the Hoi An operation, weaves a quick moving story with wonderful characters. The best part is that those characters are real people -- each with an agenda of his own. The book is filled with wonderful detail -- from the spraying of the beer girls to the skin conditions of the saturation divers who worked for more than a month at incredible depths. But Pope's very best descriptions are of being caught at sea when the Dragon Strikes and the crew and barge are caught in the teeth of a major typhoon. You feel as if you are really there -- and are glad you're not. Pope teaches about sunken treasure, saturation diving, archeology and the politics of academia with ease.
I no more than put the book down than my husband snatched it up. He read deep into last night and awoke this morning with his glasses still perched on the end of his nose. Two thumbs up from our household! P.S. I treasure my 500 year old jars from the bottom of the South China Sea even more now that I know the amazing story of suffering, intrigue and greed which brought them to me.

Dragon book GREAT.......2007-05-18
If your into Dragons this is a good book to read and has some very good illustrations in it. The Larghe's
Base's Masterpiece.......2006-04-15
While Graeme Base has recieved much acclaim over other books like Animalia this is really the greatest thing he's written. The book is loaded with Australian humor that must be read several times for the jokes to be understood. The book is divided into 3 sections chronicling 3 famous serpentologists(someone who studies dragons). Each section has 4 letters written by that serpentologist with a massive picture of the dragon in question. There is two reasons why I haven't given this 5 stars. One because it should be formatted less as a story and more factual and two because the 18 dollar price tag is outrageous. Base should really write more about this subject because he's really in his element here.
NOTE: While this is considered a 'picture book' it is not for anyone under 10 years old(and not many 10 year olds will get it either).
The perfect gift choice for a true dragon connoisseur.......2005-05-14
This is the kind of book you leave on a coffee table for visitors to peruse. It has beautiful large color plates of dragons on every left-side page and amusing anecdotes on each facing page.
The author is presuming to be an authority on "the discovery of dragons" and in a tongue-in-cheek narrative is trying to professionally prove the disclaimers of his "one time colleague Marty Fibblewitz" who has now "chosen to side with the doubters." THE DISCOVERY OF DRAGONS is divided into three sections of nine pages each: The Discovery of European Dragons, The Discovery of Asiatic Dragons, and The Discovery of Tropical Dragons. The first page of each section is an introduction to the section that describes the distinctive qualities of the dragons of said region, introduces the adventurer who discovered those dragons, and throws pot-shots at 'Professor' Fibblewitz. The following eight pages of each subsection show the author's 'proof' of these discoveries.
European dragons, says the author, were discovered by Bjorn of Bromme, Viking, from A.D. 856 through A.D. 863. He discovered Great Snow Dragons in Greenland, an Emerald Dragon in Ireland, a Welsh Red Dragon sleeping on a horde of treasure, and the St. George Dragon (yes, that very same dragon). The author's proof comes in the way of letters found, scrawled penmanship on linen to his cousin Olaf back in Norway (who seems to be having his own problems Rampaging the countryside).
In The Discovery of Asiatic Dragons, we meet heroine Soong Mei Ying, faithful daughter of a thirteenth-century Chinese Silk trader, who--while taking her ailing father's silks to a far away market--discovers a pair of Mongolian Screamers, a Japanese Butterfly Lizard with medicinal qualities, and Eastern Temple Worm, and a Great Golden Worm.
Now, the Letters of Dr. E.F. Liebermann in The Discovery of Tropical Dragons might be just a tad funnier than those of Bjorn of Bromme (it's a close tie, actually). Dr. Liebermann went to Africa in 1847 searching for the African Frilled Frog. He never finds this frog, but along the way he discovers four kinds of dragon (Livingstone's Demon, the Crested Dipper, a monstrous Common Green Draak, and several deadly Spotted Marsh Draaks). He also invents the typewriter and figures out the theory of continental drift.
This is an adorable book! Each section has its own style, and the characters--illuminated by their letters home--are unique individuals with great quirks. Each page is laden with tiny details that enthralled this reader. The letters home all have subtle changes as the adventurer passes from one discovery into the next--some of them quite hilarious. There's footnotes and maps and scale diagrams and miniature picture story reels across the bottom of each page . . . all done in glorious and changing detail work. But the best part are the dragon plates themselves: these large color paintings are gorgeous. THE DISCOVERY OF DRAGONS is a real winner, the perfect gift choice for a true dragon connoisseur.
An amazing book that will become a classic one day!.......2005-05-12
This book is the one of the most unique and exsquisite dragon books available! I received it only recently, but I am astounded at this spectacular selection.
It begins with the letters from Bjorn of Bromme, a 9th century viking. This section is the funniest one in the book. This humor is very hard to describe, you'll have to read it yourself to get the idea. Anyway, this viking travels to many countries for various (and often humorous) reasons. On the way, he discovers four different species of European dragons, while writing letters to his cousin Olaf the Grim about his incredible finds. What is unique about this section is that he loses men every time he finds another dragon!
The next section is my personal favorite. A 13th century girl named Soong Mei Ying had a sick father. In order to pay for her father's medical bills, she sets out to Kathmandu, in the hope of gaining money by selling her father's silks. Unfortunetly, the curageous girl's silks are destroyed by a pair of Mongolian Screamers (a kind of dragon she discovers). As she glumly returns home, she discovers a Japanese Butterfly Lizard (my favorite dragon in the book) that could heal her father. This discovery leads her on a fantastic adventure, in which she discovers two more dragons.
The final section in "Discovery of Dragons" tells of the adventures of Prussian cartographer Dr. E. F. Liebermann. He wants to prove the theory of continental drift and so travels from Africa to Madagascar to Tasmania in search of the rare African Frilled Frog that can prove his theory. Instead, however, he discovers four extremely bizarre dragon species. He types letters to his sweetheart on a typewriter he built himself and, unfortunetly, he meets a meets a tragic end.
You will love this very unique book. You'll be surprised by the Saint George Dragon, dazzled by the Japanese Butterfly Lizard, and repulsed by the "unique" Common Green Draak of Madagascar. This book seems to be a mix of a storybook and a zoology book. The illustrations, as mentioned before, are beautiful and detailed and there is one for every dragon. Look and read closely to find little things hidden in it. Sorry about the stereotypical phrase, but you won't be able to put this book down!
a great dragon book(rivaling dragonology).......2005-05-09
i already wrote a review on here that gave this book something of a bad name.Recently I have started to enjoy some of the smaller details of this book. For example even though the book deals a lot about dragons comments can be found written by mr. greasebeam. These comments include slight mentions of greasebeam's rival marty fibblewitz and it proves as an interesting side story. But the book itself is very enjoyable.Mr. Base has written several other books about animals but he treats the dragons as a real species. On nearly every page there is a letter,an editors note and a small info section about the certain dragon. There is also a large painting depicting the dragon a map showing where it lives and a scale comparison of the dragon to everyday animals. Also at the bottom of every page is a "comic strip" drawing out what was explained in that letter.A good book. However at my local bookstore it cost $19 and was located in the childrens section. Both of these details are the only thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars.Anyhow I very wish there was a companion to this book(the calendar is out of print).I wouldn't count on it though this book is 9 years old.

ÂI scraped off the clayÂ
there was no mistaking what I sawÂ
I had found it!Â
What Mary Anning found in the cliffs in 1811, when she was 13, was the first complete fossil of an ichthyosaur, a marine dinosaur. Mary Anning lived in England in the 1800Â's. She hunted and sold fossils to save her family from poverty after her father died when she was 11 years old. Despite social disapproval of her unfeminine occupation, Mary persisted and became a leading fossilist who made valuable contributions to science.
ÂMary shines through as a spunky and believable heroineÂ

Bestseller Graeme Base offers a new edition of the book that helped start the dragon craze
Includes newly discovered American dragons!
Fans of Graeme BaseÂand dragon loversÂwill be thrilled to discover this brand-new edition of the classic book of serpentology, The Discovery of Dragons, first published in 1996. Now it includes a special section on ÂNew World dragons, before now unknown.
Was Bjorn of Bromme one of the greatest explorers of the Viking Age or just a simple-minded, lice-infested barbarian with a passion for beach volleyball? Could Soong Mei Ying, a thirteenth-century teenager, really have discovered the Asiatic dragons or did she just need a good excuse to leave home? Did Dr. E. F. Liebermann perish after discovering the Common Green Draak, also known as the ÂAwful Gurgler, or was he suffering from a severe bout of jungle madness? And does Francisco de Nuevo still live today, working as an extra on Canadian television, after discovering the secret of eternal youth in 1532?
The answers to these questions and more will not be found within the pages of this bookÂbut there are a lot of great big dragons
ÂAll my life I have been pursued by dragons. These fearsome beasts have been a constant source of inspiration and aggravation ever since I was a kid in school. ÂGraeme Base
ÂAstute readers will note that there have been absolutely no changes made to the original text of the book. This is due to the fact that it was completely perfect in every way. However, those same readers will be delighted and amazed by the addition of a brand-new chapter introducing a previously uncatalogued class of Dragons: the New World Dragons.
ÂIt is important to note that the failure to include these exceptionally interesting and fully authenticated Dragons in the first edition of the book was the result of shoddy editorial work by persons unnamed and was in no way the fault of the author who knew all along that there were lots of other Dragons out there but did not want to cause a fuss at Snoisses and BielttÃ~g Inc. by pointing out the error. ÂProf. Rowland W. Greasebeam, B.Sc. (Serp.), F.R.Aud. (Melb.), Editor, Melbourne

Customer Reviews:
Book is both wonderful art and good story.......2007-09-18
(Graeme Base is also known as Rowland W. Greasebeam, B.Sc.)
The Discovery of Dragons: New Research Revealed is a revised edition of Graeme Base's original 1996 tongue-in-cheek release, The Discovery of Dragons. The original Discovery of Dragons featured the letters of three fictional explorers as they discovered various dragon species in Europe, Asia, and the tropics. The updated edition introduces a new explorer, Francisco de Nuevo, as he travels through North America. All have been compiled by the equally fictional serpentologist, Rowland W. Greasebeam.
Graeme Base is known for his beautiful illustrations, and The Discovery of Dragons is more art than story. The exquisitely detailed portraits of various dragons will keep you glued to the page, scoping out every aspect. Base seems to have taken a different approach with the North American dragons, making their likenesses more comical than threatening, which fits the text perfectly. This would make a wonderful coffee table book.
Once the reader is able to move past the entrancing artwork, the storyline is original and humorous. There are now four explorers in this revised edition, each with their own interesting motivations.
--The first is the Viking Bjorn of Bromme, writing to his "bad-tempered cousin, Olaf the Grim," as he travels through Europe.
--Next is the Asian adventurer Soong Mei Ying as she writes to her ailing father, Soong Chen Yi. Third is cartographer and ampibiologist, Dr. E. F. Lieberman writing to his fiancée, Prunella Hapsburgernfries, as he forges through Africa, Madagascar, and Tasmania.
--Last is the newest addition, Francisco de Nuevo, writing "to his lady friends" as he explores the New World. As each stumbles along in Monty Python fashion, they encounter dragons as small as mice and as large as houses, with personalities as colorful as their features.
Intended for ages 9 to 12, The Discovery of Dragons: New Research Revealed is a book that can be appreciated by all ages.
Armchair Interviews says: Base combines powerful images with light-hearted humor in a unique blend of entertainment.
A "must-have" for the private library collections of dragon lovers everywhere........2007-07-10
The Discovery of Dragons: New Research Revealed is a singularly gorgeous picturebook of fantastic dragon species. Written for readers of all ages, The Discovery of Dragons features a gorgeous full-color picture of a dragon species on each two-page spread, and scraps of "primary source research" about the amazing sighting of the beast on the other. From Livingstone's Demon to Spotted Marsh Draak and the beautiful yet delicate Japanese Butterfly Lizard, The Discovery of Dragons dazzles the imagination and even challenges the reader to expand his or her imagination about what truly constitutes a dragon. A "must-have" for the private library collections of dragon lovers everywhere.
Book Description
"You have written a new chapter in the history of life upon the earth."
When Roy Chapman Andrews read these words from American Museum of Natural History president Henry Fairfield Osborn, he was being congratulated on his discovery of a new species of dinosaur. A stunned scientific community named it Protoceratops andrewsi in his honor.
Andrews led five scientific expeditions to Mongolia's desert, the Gobi, from 1922 to 1930. He was a pioneer of modern field research, but it was his team's fossil discoveries that amazed the world -- especially the first-ever complete nest of dinosaur eggs. These were remarkable achievements for a man who began his scientific career scrubbing floors at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
It wasn't easy. Along the way, he battled sandstorms, snakes, and bandit attacks. He drove through parts of the desert that had never seen cars before, and he had to have spare tires -- and every drop of gasoline -- carted in by camel.
Roy Chapman Andrews had a love of adventure that took him all over the globe. This action packed story, actual expedition photographs, and quotes from Andrews himself present a great explorer of his century -- and a grand tale of adventure!

Roy Chapman Andrews: A Real-Life Indiana Jones.......2002-01-28
Real-life is usually so much more interesting than the movies, and Ann Bausum's wonderful photobiography of Roy Chapman Andrews - Dragon Bones and Dinosaur Eggs - will be ample evidence of this to any young Indiana Jones fan. Roy Chapman Andrews [1884-1960] was an explorer and is best known for the Central Asiatic Expeditions, which he led on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History and during which the first dinosaur eggs and nests were found. He is also a probable model for the character of Indiana Jones. Dragon Bones and Dinosaur Eggs puts its main focus on Andrew's life from his employment with the AMNH through to the expeditions to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. The book is a well-done combination of photographs, text, and block quotes. The text is well-written and exciting [even for an older person like me], and the pictures help the reader to put themselves into the story. Did Roy Chapman Andrews wear a cool looking hat? [YES!] Did Roy Chapman Andrews dislike snakes and did he have a run-in with them on one of the expeditions? [YES!] I recommend this book to any young person of late elementary age who is interested in exploration and paleontology.

beautiful book! Think "Dinotopia".......2003-09-29
Told in the format of a journal (Lord Nathaniel Parker's). The 1812 expedition to undiscovered islands is richly illustrated with paintings of every kind. The scientific Lord Parker documents everything with ease, insects, animals, and plants. If you like anything imaginative, you should try to read it.
I'm telling you, the book is nothing but color. It seems so real. I especially like the story of the giant carnivorous plant that leaves off a scent which smells like everyone's favorite food. A sailor gets stuck in it and they have to cut him out. ("Seamen, my dear, are not the brightest of people as a rule.") He writes much of it to his dear Belinda. (He kept the journal for her benefit.)

The perfect fairytale.......2007-07-15
As the mother of a young daughter, I am always aware of how hard I must work to ensure that she sees herself as a person and not an object. I absolutely love how this book turns convention upside down and how Jane is true to herself even when everyone else--her parents included--is trying to tell her to conform. This book served as an excellent introduction to a brief discussion with my daughter as to how she can be anything she wants to be, no matter what others tell her.
Love having a female hero.......2007-06-11
My two and a half year old does not watch much TV but she loves Jane and the Dragon on Saturdays (she also likes Jacob Two Two and we have ordered those books as well). She was very excited when she saw the books as well. In a time when TV execs could not allow Dora to be on top (by giving Diego his own show) it is nice to have a female lead that is strong and brave but also sometimes makes mistakes and learns from them.
The stories are interesting enough for older kids too.
Jane and the Dragon.......2007-01-16
This is such a special and unique book. It has a great message, especially for girls. It challenges stereotypes and convention in such a sweet way. Enjoy!
Far Better than the Paperbag Princess!.......2005-07-01
This fabulous, feminist tale throws sexist attitudes on their backside. For all people who dare to live the unexpected life, this book is an inspiration, validation and absolute delight.
Absolutely Superb.......2004-10-22
Jane is a wonderful role model for young girls and boys alike. Her spirit makes her soar well past what is "expected of her" and allows her to achieve her dreams. She helps others achieve their dreams as well. The book is well written. The illustrations are beautiful. This was my favourite bedtime book to read to my daughter. When she put away her children's books many years ago, this one stayed on her shelf. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
