Needs more editing.......2005-01-13
This book is riddled with mistakes. To name a few, 1. it says that cows are related to horses and swine (if you are going that far back in evolution then you might as well say that they are related to us), 2. several photos have misnamed the breed of cow in the picture, 3. says that Guernseys come from France (they originated on the channel island of Guernsey), 4. a photo shows some Muskoxen as being a type of wild cow (they are more closely related to goats), 5. the book states that cows have no incisors (they do have LOWER incisors). I could go on.

Helpful for Quick Reference and for Students.......2000-11-23
While not comprehensive, this book is a concise "...introduction to the basic terms found in the major schools of Indian Philsosophy." (From the Preface) I find this statement to be true. As a quick reference this book is very helpful. It contains most of the terms of Indian Philosophy one would need to know, and in many cases it provides a multiple definitions. Sure, some definitions seem simplified, but that is due to their nature, the limitations of the English Language and our own Philosophical Concepts, and to the scope of the book. Dr. Grimes clearly states the aim of the book in the Preface. It is to define "...most terms", and to do this in a 440 page paperback one needs to be brief. Presumably Scholars of Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy should have other References to consult, but I think it still is helpful also to them, because it is easy and quick to use. Sanskrit Students will also benefit because all terms are given in the Devanagari Script and in Romanized Transliteration. I use this book and recommend it.
Helpful for the spritual reader.......2000-06-03
It helps me to find a translation of certain spritual sanskrit terms. If different schools hold a differnt meaning for the term, the meanings are listed separately for each school. It has to be said that if one would want to find really everything, one would have to buy Monier Williams super large sanskrit english dictionary. However, for a spiritual reader like myself, Grimes book is just great.
Very basic, incomplete and cautiously useful for the novice.......1998-12-21
By the title, I assumed that you could find the meaning of most shlokas based on hindu philosophy. Wrong! I have been trying to use it for the last three months and never found any word or phrase that I was actually looking for. For those totally unaware of Hindu philosophy it may be cautiously useful. The author has tried to be thorough, but it is apparent he does not understand the Hindu philosophy in his bones. Put another way, he has a lot of "book knowledge," but nothing deeper, which clearly shows in his descriptions of words and phrases. Generally disappointing!
Excellent Sourcebook.......1997-07-28
Here is a wonderful sourcebook for transliterated(i.e. roman lettering) terms with definitions in English for the new Vedanta or Sanskrit scholar or spriritual seeker.
In addition, the Devanagari script(i.e. Sanskrit) is in a nice, clear printing.
I have only found smaller wordlists up to now, and not with Devanagari accompaniment.
I rate it 9 due to the higher, paperback price of, I believe, $26.95.
Oh, by the way, I plan to buy it as soon as the rent's covered.
Namaste.
Book Description
There has been a crying need for an excellent Sanskrit-English dictionary which supplies everything required by an average reader and which is characterized by brevity and cheapness. The present compilation is intended to serve that purpose. The bulk of this dictionary has been reduced without compromising its usefulness.

Reasonably Good Tool.......2006-03-25
Excellent dictionary. Very comprehensive. My only complaint is the size of the type, which, at times, blurs Sanskrit characters. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it as a part of any Sanskrit scholar's library.
A few caveats.......2001-11-04
Let me make clear what is so concise about this book. For one thing, it is exclusively Sanskrit-to-English; there is no English-to-Sanskrit section. For another, the Sanskrit words are written only in Devanagari script, without Roman transliteration. There isn't even a reference key provided. Because of this, I would recommend this book only if you are already familiar with Sanskrit and just want a reference that will fit in your pocket. Otherwise, you might want to find something else, although I'm not aware of many other choices.
Useful for travelling or advanced scholars.......1998-08-04
Concise it certainly is. The small paperback book contains little extraneous information--however helpful it might have been--and its verb forms seem to be sadly lacking. Were the shortage of information the only problem, I might still recommend the book with only a few reservations; however, the devanaagarii script is so small and smudgy that at times it's difficult to even make out what a particular word is supposed to be. For travelling scholars or those who only need a small reference for reminder's sake, this might be a good, inexpensive pick. However, for beginners a more comprehensive and comprehendable dictionary would be a good choice.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful - but not for self-study.......2006-05-12
The book is exactly what the title indicates, concise and elementary. It is a great book to use in a class, with a teacher who can explain what it all means. It is not at all suitable for self-study. If you want to learn Sanskrit on your own, try Coulson's Teach Yourself Sanskrit.
terrible 2.......2006-04-19
I am totally of the same opinion with serbian friend who commented on this book three years ago. Please buy Thomas Egenes' 'Intros to Sanskrit 1 and 2'. Avoid Whitney and Gonda.
Terrible.......2003-01-27
First the good points: First few pages, dealing with the script, are rather good and clear in presentation. Those pages, that can be seen scanned on the site, attracted me to buy this book.
Now, the bad points: All the rest of the book. Instead of clear explanations and tabular presentation of noun declensions and verb conjugations, that I somehow expected to get, all there are are pages after pages of obscure paragraphs more meant to confuse than to explain.
Let us look at Page 43, Conjugation, § 57. Preliminary remarks, II, which is supposed to explain Sanskrit moods and tenses:
"The moods are: indicative, optative, imperative; only the present has three moods, the remaining tenses only the indicative; the infrequent precative is, however, a kind of aorist optative. The tenses are: present and imperfect, which form the present system with opt. and pres.imp., future, the rare conditional, aorist, perfect."
Precative? aorist optative? pres.imp.? And it gets worse and worse.
I really cannot recommend this book. I wasted my money and time on it. Instead I recommend "Introduction to Sanskrit" by Thomas Egenes. It is a very user-friendly book that can actually teach you something about Sanskrit.
Classic initial Sanskrit grammar.......2000-08-04
The classic Sanskrit grammar is, of course, Whitney. It, however, includes Vedic Sanskrit and very rare forms. Jan Gonda provides a basic, understandable grammar that covers everything a first year student needs to know. His straight-forward style also makes this volume useful for Indo-European historical linguistics classes where the intent is to understand the basic structures of the "Indo" branch. In short, I recommend this highly as a starting point.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent pattern book.......2006-10-19
I have this book and have referred to it many times and have used several of the patterns. There is a nice variety and the patterns cover a broad collection of interests and tastes. Excellent book and a must have in the stained glass studio.
It is Ok but..........2005-07-19
The designs are wonderful;however, they are all in black and white.. I expected more...
great designs abound.......2003-09-14
Not only were there great traditional designs, but I also found some beautiful and unique nature designs which I hadn't seen in other stained glass books and I was definitely pleased. The contemporary designs range from fairly simple to complex, but do not contain patterns that are unrecognizable as some stained glass patterns books do. This book definitely has variety, variety, variety.
A regular source of inspiration for me.......2000-11-22
I have used a good number of the designs presented in this book for my own creations. Lots of contemporary floral designs and some traditional victorian patterns. Projects range from relatively simple to very complex - designs that fit very well in homes as in commercial establishments. I have adapted one design in this book to be placed in a piece of furniture that I created. All is in black and white, no pictures of completed projects.
Book Description
Handsome collection of both traditional and contemporary motifs, printed in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, depicts charming landscapes, bold geometrical patterns, exquisite florals, and birds. Suitable for windows, mirrors, panels, and other glass configurations, these immediately usable designs also lend themselves to a broad range of other purposes. 165 black-and-white illustrations.

Traditional and Contemporary Stained Glass Designs (Dover Electronic Clip Art).......2006-01-20
I had hoped that the CD versions of the clip art would have had a better quality of the picture for input to stain glass programs for enlarging. The quality was the same as what I was already getting from scanning in on a scanner from
books. I did not know that all 3 clip art versions I purchased at the same time were the same or very similar as the books by the similar titles that I already had from Dover. I now just do not have to scan the pictures into my computer.
