I felt that Rick's Provence and the French Riviera guide has some of the essentials but not the inspired coverage of his other books. There isn't the excitement that he presents in his Italian and other European guides. The coverage of the hill towns of Provence is somewhat perfunctory.

As far as information goes, this book deserves 5 stars ... it's great for figuring out how to get around, what to see (and what not to see!), and how much money to bring. However, I couldn't give 5 stars, simply because I was hoping for better maps and maybe a few color photographs. The book has crudely drawn maps -- almost with a cartoonish look about them -- that don't seem all that helpful. And as for photos, well, the one on the cover is about it. This is a great book to have when planning your trip to Provence ... however, I would advise supporting it with a 2nd guidebook that touts glossy pages with color pictures and maps!

In some ways, the adult returning to college will find the experience much easier than it would have been in his or her youth, to the extent that the "mature student" will wonder why everyone doesn't wait till adolescence is long gone before engaging with lectures and majors and essays and exams. As an older returning non-traditional student,for me, this book really answered the questions you don't even think to ask but should. It really helps overcome a lot of anxiety for returning students, especially on Math.
It also gives you an excellent game plan to follow on studying,and life management for those married students or single parents returning to school. It's worth the small investment. It is well written by someone thats been there.

Preparing for an education.......2003-07-22
The intended audience for this book is an older student who is going to college to earn some kind of undergraduate degree. It's probably unnecessary for those seeking higher degrees, but some younger students might benefit from reading it. The author is a Psychology professor and much of the book draws from theories of learning. You'll also see some psychoanalysis in the discussions of anecdotal stories. If you're not into that, it may be a problem. The author is best at discussing the broader issues concerning school such as motivation and knowing your support systems, while the details about writing a term paper, or overcoming math anxiety were thin and almost useless.
If you're an adult, and you're anxious about going back to school, then I recommend the book. It'll soothe your anxiety and you'll be better able to evaluate your readiness for school. Otherwise, I'm not so sure you'll find it worth your while. If you want a book on how to study well, better ones exist.

I picked this book up with the intension of just skimming it but I read every page! I also recommended this book to several of my friends that are going back to college. The author gives you some really interesting and effective strategies for studying(I've tried them - and got 104% on the next test I took), writing papers, scheduling your time. It was really helpful and I would recommend it to any college student not only older ones!

I know that people have been complaining about how some of the stencils are too small and become unclear when blown up. They have a few other issues, too.
Here's the thing: the book has over 2,000 great stencils that are perfectly legible. I'm an illustrator, woodworker, and paper crafter. I am simply delighted at the various choices of stencil. Plus, the book is very inspiring in terms of providing a jumping off point to make up my own. I simply love it.

This is a wonderful resource for design ideas! I use elements of these stencils as patterns for guitar inlays. The copyright info on the inside cover is generous allowing use of the patterns, "free and without special permission." in certain circumstances.

If you are a craftperson, do not buy this book, though pictoral, it is more historical and you need a magnifying glass to see some of the stencils.

This book is chock full of great Victorian design. It has cartouches (ornamental borders), patterns, single filligree elements, and the best part is that they are all royalty free. You will need to scan the elements and clean them up a bit, but this book is a fantastic resource for the "flourish" trend that is going on in graphic design right now.

I use these stencils as layouts for gun engraving. While many designs are too small and lack enough detail to be able to reproduce (about 30%) most are of good quality and detail. It's a great value for the price and I strongly recommend it as an indispensible aid for all engravers, wood carvers, and stencil makers.

I found this to be very dated in techniques and style. I knew it was ten years old, but I didn't realize the vast changes in stenciling. I didn't find the instruction to be particularly detailed, and learned far more from the many other books available.

This book nicely covers the basics such as materials and techniques, with good full color photos to further illustrate what is explained. For the advanced painter, there are some good ideas, again with full color pictures. I've even brought this book with me to a client to show them some samples of what can be done.

Design book based on complex tradition.......2006-07-13
Unlike the first reviewer who gave this book 1 star, this is actually an excellent book showing designs taken from one of the many complex arts and crafts traditions of Japan. These are actual designs from stencils, which were carefully cut from mulberry paper and used for printing designs on cloth.The stencils are called katagami. Some of these are still being made, and by the fine traditional craftsmen of Japan working with simple, traditional tools to produce amazing patterns. The first reviewer has not bothered to look carefully into Japanese art forms, and so is, I believe speaking from ignorance. Not a book for tatoo designs, granted, but I think most people who would like design references from a somewhat obscure Japanese art tradition would find this book of interest. If you'd like more detail on the art tradition of stencil cutting or carving, you might want to look at

Although these stencils were/are made for the purpose of dyeing cloth, they can be considered artforms in their own right. (I own a couple of these.) The Dover book is a nice reference.
the very best of Japanese textile graphics.......2003-06-02
As a previous reviewer has noted, Clarence Hornung's "Traditional Japanese Stencil Designs" is not the book to purchase if you are seeking inspiration for tattoos. It is, however, of exceptional value if your interests include Japanese aesthetics in general and textile motifs in particular or if you are seeking sophisticated patterns that can be manipulated and reproduced as graphic designs.
The stencils included were originally designed for monochromatic printing on cotton textiles but are also typical of the patterns imprinted on deer-skin goods and traditional Japanese wrapping papers. More than any other volume in Dover's generously-sized library of books on Japanese design, Hornung's testifies to the Japanese genius for manipulating a few design elements into subtle and classically beautiful patterns. Some of the patterns are abstract and without specific meaning, but the overwhelming majority are rich in symbolism. Hornung's introduction discusses the most important of these symbolic meanings. However, the usefulness of the introduction is compromised by his failure to number the stencils and then identify for the reader precisely which plates represent each thematic motif.
a journey in unjapanese art.......2003-03-22
If you are at all trying to find sources for Japanese art, this is NOT the place to do it! Not only are the designs in the book non-Japanese they are worthless if you are using them for illustration or any reference to draw from. If you are looking for a source book for tattooing like I was, this is not it. To say this book was weak is a compliment. The biggest waste of money I've spent in a long time!

Nice selection of stencils.......2000-05-16
The stencil patterns in this book are large and easy to trace onto your stencil - I have used them on walls, mirrors (with frosted paint) and on furniture to make my home look more Indian without having to spend a lot of money...
Nice, but large Indian Designs.......2000-01-17
The book contains 60 large stencil designs on regular paper (not cut out!) of various subjects. There are floral borders, tree of life and other botanicals, as well as elephants, cows, horses, and some people playing traditonal Indian instruments.
According to the back cover, the authors travelled extensively in India to collect the designs, copying stencils used by village artisans and Hindu priests. The designs have traditionally been used to decorate the floors of temples, etc, so this is probably why they are so large in scale (usually one design per 8x10 page).
I still found it a worthwhile collection from which to pull Indian designs.
