Book Description
How does a bacterial cell grow during the division cycle? This question is answered by the codeveloper of the Cooper-Helmstetter model of DNA replication. In a unique analysis of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper considers the major cell categories (cytoplasm, DNA, and cell surface) and presents a lucid description of bacterial growth during the division cycle.
The concepts of bacterial physiology from Ole Maaløe's Copenhagen school are presented throughout the book and are applied to such topics as the origin of variability, the pattern of DNA segregation, and the principles underlying growth transitions.
The results of research on E. coli are used to explain the division cycles of Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes. Insightful reanalysis highlights significant similarities between these cells and E.coli.
With over 25 years of experience in the study of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper has synthesized his ideas and research into an exciting presentation. He manages to write a comprehensive volume that will be of great interest to microbiologists, cell physiologists, cell and molecular biologists, researchers in cell-cycle studies, and mathematicians and engineering scientists interested in modeling cell growth.
Key Features
* Written by one of the codiscoverers of the Cooper-Helmstetter model
* Applies the results of research on E. coli to other groups, including Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes; the Caulobacter reanalysis highlights significant similarities with the E. coli system
* Presents a unified description of the bacterial division cycle with relevance to eukaryotic systems
* Addresses the concepts of the Copenhagen School in a new and original way

Book Description
This book presents the current knowledge on the structure and function of the major families of cell adhesion molecules, the integrins, the selectins, the immunoglobulins superfamily and CD44, concentrating on their role in the immune system. Complex interactions between the members of these families mediate diverse adhesion functions, including leukocyte-leukocyte interactions, lymphocyte homing, inflammation, and lymphocyte-stromal cell interaction during homopoiesis. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the regulatory elements that control the expression and function of adhesion molecules: Cytokines not only induce the expression of certain adhesion molecules, but may also modify their functional status. A number of chapters discuss the migration of lymphocytes between hemopoietic organs such as the thymus, lymph nodes, Peyer's patches and spleen, and other chapters focus on the changes in leukocyte migration during an inflammatory response. In summary, this book introduces new aspects of cell adhesion on the molecular and biological level.

Book Description
Cellular polarization is key to all cellular functions. Our perceptions, which are derived from our senses, depend on the proper cellular polarization of our sense organs, such as the eyes or ears. Much of this book examines the different aspects in cellular polarization and its researched role in the Drosophila, where the first planar cellular polarity (PCP) gene was discovered over 20 years ago. Topics also include: From flies to man: how we are polarized, Marking an embryo work, Cellular polarization at its functional best, Hearing and seeing your environment, and From a cell to an organ.
This series represents timely issues in developmental biology. It provides annual reviews of selected topics, written from the perspectives of leading investigators in the field of development.
* Presents many various organisms such as flies, fish, frogs and mice
* Offers over 40 exceptional illustrations
* First of its kind to include new data and detailed models on cell planar polarization

Book Description
The past few years have seen rapid progress in apoptosis research. This volume deals with many of the recent advances made in uncovering the molecular and cellular basis of apoptosis, with particular emphasis to the role of apoptosis in normal biological processes and the mechanisms involved. The articles published in this volume are written by leading experts in the field and should be a vital resource for researchers in biomedicine.
Book Description
Cell biologists have recently become aware that the asymmetry of cell division is an important regulatory phenomenon in the fate of a cell. During development, cell diversity originates through asymmetry; in the adult organism asymmetric divisions regulate the stem cell reservoir and are a source of the drift that contributes to the aging of organisms with renewable cell compartments. Because of the concept of semi-conservative DNA synthesis, it was thought that the distribution of DNA between daughter cells was symmetric. The analysis of the phenomenon in cells during mitosis, however, revealed the asymmetry in the distribution of the genetic material that creates the drift contributing to aging of mammals. On the other hand, cancer cells can originate from a deregulation of asymmetry during mitosis in particular during stem cell expansion. The book describes the phenomenon in different organisms from plants to animals and addresses its implications for the development of the organism, cell differentiation, human aging and the biology of cancers.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2006-11-05
The book does a nice job with breaking out the various destinations and gives a lot of helpful hints. The book also has a lot of space on what not to eat, how to drive, how to get around and other helpful tips. There is so much information to cover, the book could stand to be a little longer.
OK.......2006-03-20
It has a lot about the big places, but nothing about those little places that you just have to find yourself.
The most up to date guide available!.......2005-10-12
After spending ten days in the Yucatan I found this guide to be the most helpful of the three guides I took with me. This is due to the fact that this is a very new publication (fresh off the press!). Lots of good info on what to do and see and where to eat. Made my trip even more memorable then it would have been anyway. The Yucatan is a great vacation adventure, which I highly recommend! I also check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" great thriller that has become an underground Hit!

Great ideas for the bride and groom's parents to use!.......2007-03-13
As the mother of the bride, and recent mother of the groom, I found this book to provide many useful ideas for invitations, flowers, the menu, cakes, and even my wedding day wardrobe. I was able to suggest great items and shopping strategies, which made me feel like an important member of the planning team. Highly recommended for parents who are helping to plan and pay for the wedding.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-11-14
I recently purchased 3 books to plan my wedding, and I was recieved 5 more. This particular book is extremely helpful. There is certainly a lot of info that a thrifty person may have already considered, however it helps you bring things all together with a wide variety of options. The book is easy to follow, and the way it is written makes it easy to skip around without losing interest. Out of all the wedding planning books I purchased and recieved this is by far the most helpful.
Here's one way to save wedding money -- don't buy this book!.......2005-12-08
To be frank, this book was a total waste of money. In all the 1000 Bargain Tips, I don't think I found ONE that I haven't already thought of, read about in a magazine or seen online.
Among the wonderful tips:
--Serve a less expensive meal to guests
--Order fewer flowers
--Buy a non-designer dress
--Borrow your ring pillow from a friend
--Get a photographer to cover just a few hours of the reception instead of staying the entire time
Wow, thanks for the insight!
How about, Save yourself $12 that could be used to buy your unity candle by NOT BUYING THIS BOOK.
I stupidly bought it in conjunction with 1000 ways to make your wedding special. Can't wait to crack THAT one open.
Wise advice on how not to break the wedding budget.......2005-03-24
Everyone loves a bargain, but does being frugal mean cheap? Absolutely not! This book gives wise advice how not to break the wedding budget.
Both "1,000 Best Secrets for Your Perfect Wedding" and "1,000 Best Wedding Bargains are books (four and a half by eight inches), thickly filled with imaginative planning and just good to know info.
Awesome book with great tips!.......2005-01-20
Love this book. Great tips! I like the format of it, too!! Thanks!

Customer Reviews:
Some Unique Fonts Here.......2006-12-01
The fonts included in this book will surely make a nice addition to your type library. Dan Solo had a huge collection of great old and new type faces. You'll find 24 of them here. Some, you might already have, and some are so nice that I believe if you find one gem here, it makes the price worthwhile. The fonts are in both Windows True Type and Macintosh formats. The pages have the complete alphabets and a character chart. Be sure to notice the "extra characters" that are offered in some fonts.
More great Victorian fonts.......2006-09-01
Although the title doesn't mention Victorian, most of these designs originate in that era. They have influences other than the typical complex Victorian fonts. But they can be effectively be used with fonts from the other Dover title "Victorian Display Fonts". Well drawn, Mac and Windows, Postscript and Truetype...and what a GREAT price!
Partly as it saysý.......2002-01-02
This is an excellent collection of 24 fonts, with printed examples and indices of the special characters for Macintosh (access to Windows special characters is described in the ReadMe file). They represent a fine collection of Baroque and Gothic lettering, but very little of the material could really be called truly Celtic. Any church could spice up its documents for special occasions with this collection. The `sz' of German formal text appears in a variety of forms. Also present are many other accented letters used in various European languages but not always included in more current fonts. Try it! Use it! There is creative material here!
