Book Description
The tall tales, edge-of-your-seat adventures, and poignant stories from identical twins and accomplished mountaineers Adrian and Alan Burgess.
Twin brothers Adrian and Alan Burgess have climbed from the Alps to the Himalayas, from Patagonia to McKinley. They began climbing as youngsters in their native Yorkshire. Three decades later, they have become legends in the international climbing community, renowned not only for their strength and skill on the world's most challenging peaks, but also for the raucous energy and devil-may-care exuberance they exhibit off the mountain.
The Burgess Book of Lies details the excitement and hilarity of their eventful lives. They explore experiences ranging from how it feels to be identical twins to the thrill of standing atop Mount Everest to the anguish of a friend's death in the Karakoram. Their tales3/4some tall, all juicy3/4are full of humor, passion and poignancy, reflecting their commitment to living life to the fullest.
Full of humor and drama, this is a great read for climbers and armchair adventurers alike.

Two Guys who have no equal.......2007-06-08
If you do not know Adrian and Aid Burgess your in for a treat. The Burgess boys are known in the mountaineering circles as the crazy twins. These two have lived enough of a life for ten people. I am sure both are bared from a number of countries, as well as a couple of bars in France. The wit and humor they display from a lifetime of adventures will both entertain and amaze you as relive some of harrowing experiences.
The bad boys are good!.......2006-03-15
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you've read as many mountaineering books as I have, eventually you may read a dozen accounts of the same epic mountaineering tragedy. Even if I'd heard the story before I was enchanted with the Burgess viewpoint. I also encountered some of the tales about the twins' antics in other books. And I was delighted to hear them tell their own stories. Their respect for the local people and customs was very important to me. It's a much better world with the Burgess twins in it! Thanks for sharing your stories with the rest of us.
Entertainment and Excitement.......2002-02-17
I am addicted to mountaineering books, the "who gets killed next on Everest" type. The Bad Burgess Boys were mentioned periodically in these. Just having read their own account of themselves and their adventures, I was very surprised and delighted by their flair for writing and obvious intelligence. Very few climbers who write about their own experiences seem to be able to analyze risks and apply prudence when necessary. These guys have done it all and lived to tell the tale. I had wondered if the title "Book of Lies" was tongue in cheek, because the book seemed very honest to me. I just read a quote from one of the twins that confirmed my hunch: "there's not a lie in it." One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long while.
In the manner of the late Don Whillans........2000-03-16
A very funny account of the Burgess brothers misadventures. A must for anyone who has ever climbed a mountain or raised a little hell.

OUTSTANDING!.......2006-01-20
I ordered this book to use along with my text. It made the course much easier to understand. This book is the only reason I made a B in linear algebra. I just ordered the other books to use for abstract algebra and probability also. Buy it!
Better and easier than sitting thru a confusing instructor.......2005-06-20
Want to ace linear algebra and not get confused all the time? This book can help solve even the trickiest problems in linear algebra and helps understand the more complex and complicated concepts of linear algebra. Buy this book and get ahead and never get left out in the cold again !
Good for more practice but some irritating flaws.......2000-05-25
I've used many Schaum's books before, and most of them were very good because they were well written and explained concepts and techniques clearly. "Beginning Linear Algebra," however, was not as good as most of the other books in the series. It suffers from long chapter outlines, poor explanations, and many errors both in the explanations and answers to problems. Nevertheless, this book does provide a lot of good practice problems with answers. So I would recommend this book as a supplement to a regular text and not as a primary source of information about linear algebra.
Book Description
This third edition of the perennial bestseller defines the recent changes in how the discipline is taught and introduces a new perspective on the discipline. New material in this third edition includes:

So Cheap.......2007-06-16
Another favorite. Learn a lot...have lots of fun...and learn a lot! Be sure you have finished the Schaum's Outlines Elementary Math first before you work this book out since it will strengthen your foundation solidly. This book has all the answers and the worked out problems. You can't go wrong with this gem, and no, don't waste your money on high-priced textbooks when this book contains everything already. After you finish this book, progress to Schaum's Outlines Intermediate Algebra.
Good but better ones out there!.......2006-04-19
This book, I must say, is very good companion for any high school or middle school students who want to master the subject. But the most useful problem or resource book that I have ever read in English is
Algebra: A study aid for self-education
ASIN: B0007C0IUS
in my school library. This book is just so useful that every problem is provided with sufficient background information. You can ACTUALLY MASTER the subject by working out the problems ON YOUR OWN--solutions are provided to every problem as well. Moreover, every pair of problems is typical, help you sharpen your skills while teaching you much about it. If you are ambitious and want to get even better in the subject, check it out. It's very user-friendly but very informative and interesting!
Very Happy.......2006-03-01
I purchased this book to make a quick review of Math and help my son. I am so happy that I will buy the entire collection from elementary Algebra to Calculus including Differencial equations, Geometry and Trigonometry. Great help for those who need a solid foundation in Math. You can't go wrong with Schaum's Outline.
Satisfied for my current level, but..........2005-05-14
while I agree with what everyone above has said, Ill add that the series of Schaum's have helped me tremendously. IF you have a basic understanding of the concepts and need reviewing, then this might be for you.. however as a newbie, I cannot recommend a book that is consistently filled with errors. Everything said above by other reviewers is correct; compact, easy to carry, lightweight, concise, to the point, tons of problems... they simply leave out that there are page after page, in some spurts, many errors. I am at about pre-calculus level, have used Schaums Outline of Arithmetic, this book here, and purchased their Outline of Precalculus edition awhile ago. Im strictly using these books for reviewing and their inaccuracy concerns me.. for example, when I arrive at the Calc level or higher where Im probably not going to be sure of what Im doing and I need something cheap, fast, full with problems and accurate.. I don't think I will be using Schaums as I don't want to be mislead with incorrect worked out problems. For review, if you have some experience, YES use these books - definately; you can work fast and the information is packed and it's cheap! If you have no clue about the subject at hand, don't buy them. I am for Schaums technique and presentation, but their accuracy must improve... I guess that the saying holds true, 'you get what you pay for'.
the best book for studying mathematics.......2000-11-30
This book is suitable for both bad and good students at mathematics. Firstly, each category is explained easily but briefly. Secondly, there are many questions, so you can get used to each category and can solve many questions quickly. For another thing, this book is so compact that you can bring anywhere you go and read it. Finally but the most importantly, this book is excellent for people using English as a mother tongue. It is because my mother tongue is Japanese.
Book Description
Following the successful model of the prior edition, which sold over 119,000 copies, this book assumes no prior knowledge of mathematics and makes accessible all of elementary math, including the basics of algebra and geometry. It features up-to-date terminology plus added explanations of how to make calculations both with and without a calculator. Thousands of questions, with fully worked out solutions or delayed answers, help students learn how to solve the kinds of problems commonly encountered on exams and in real life.

Customer Reviews:
Oh yeah..........2007-06-16
One of my favorite books. I buy this for anybody who knows nothing about mathematics, or they claim to hate it. A few actually learned from the book and now love math. I worked through this book while I was taking Differential Equations. SO much fun because...one, it's fun...two, you will learn a lot...three, it's easy...four, you will want to learn more. I suggest this book as a starting point before you progress to Schaum's Outlines Elementary Algebra. There is no gap in between. A great book.
good not just for review but to learn.......2006-11-04
My son needs some real education in math (he is 7.5 years old in second grade). I use this book to set the curriculum and scope of teaching him math. This book serves as the basis to learn pre-calculus. So far he loves it and understands math is not all about just addition/subtraction/multiplication and division.
Great book, but what's with the errors?.......2004-12-04
I found this book to be a great supplement for my review of Math. Just the way it is presented makes it a joy to review. Straight and to the point. I plan on using the others in this line of books to hopefully get up to pre-calc for college.
However, I gave it four stars because of the unbelievably amount of errors found within. Where was the proof reader before publishing? Im at chapter 6 and have found approx 30+ errors. Ive lost count, something like one every other page or so.
I said above that I value these books, the errors have got to stop... if and when one reaches a level that he/she is not sure what it is they're doing, how will they know the right answer? They won't and will be misled, unfortunately.
To sum up, I definately approve of Schaums methods of supplementing mathematics but there needs to be some higher level of accuracy. Luckily, they are cheap and one would be wise to purchase additional material as well.

An excellent book fortextbook support.......2007-06-25
I bought this book to bolster my knowledge of Algebra concepts while taking precalculus courses at my local college. I found it to be very supportive and supplements the textbook that was assigned to my class.
Mary in Her own words.......2007-05-14
Personal refections of a priest on his devotion o the Blessed Mother. Well presented.
The best of the Schaum's outlines on Algebra.......2007-02-15
Schaum's has several flavors of its outlines on Algebra in circulation. Of all of them, I would say that this one is the best, not only for college students but for high school algebra students who plan to study mathematics further in both high school and college. It takes you from the very beginning and talks about numbers and number systems, gets into the meat of algebra with solving various types of equations and equations in more than one variable, and finishes up with some linear and matrix algebra. The explanations are very well done, and thus the book acts as a supplemental textbook and reference as well as a compact source of exercises, solved problems, and essential equations. I have examined the section on exponents and logarithms, and I really don't see that the outline's approach is antiquated at all, as some of the other reviewers have claimed. If I had any criticism of the book at all it would be that it needs more "word problems" than it already has. After all, if you get to the point where you can solve equation B for variable X, then a computer can do the rest of the work for you. The work in mathematics as well as engineering is figuring out what equation will yield a solution to the problem at hand.
Out of Date.......2006-01-11
Last revised in 1997, the Outline of College Algebra has not kept up with the content of current college algebra classes and textbooks.
The treatment of logarithms is archaic. There is no discussion of exponential equations or logarithmic equations. Solving exponential and logarithmic equations is part of any good college algebra class and textbook, and is a fundamental skill required for calculus, science and engineering. Lacking these topics, the Outline is not a complete supplement or study guide for college algebra classes.
decent for its price.......2005-06-04
book has decent material for its price, however i am finding a lot of errors as i'm working thru this book. there's an error on pg. 169 sect 17.4 parabolas
(1)y^2=4py
it's supposed to be y^2-4px
that's an error in the example used to teach the concept, not just a small error in the samples. although there's plenty of errors in the sample problems as well.
use this book to review like i am, it's got some decent proofs in here but not all of them. check out www.wikipedia.com for extra information on proofs on certain sections.
overall for $12, u can't go wrong, just make sure to use it as a review, and remember the book has errors.
