Nice Pictures but ultimately not worth it.......2001-02-10
I happened to pass by this book at my local library, and I ended up reading all 150 unremarkable pages. This book is essentially a compilation of Bach's journal entries and Krasemann's photographs, and a lot of times, to the book's detriment, they have nothing to do with each other. The photographs are certainly nice, but the journal entries are useless. Bach's journal is basically 150 pages of bland animal descriptions. There is little else. We barely learn anything about the circumstances of her trip, the people she interacts with, or anything else about her experience. Instead the average sentence is something like, "Today we saw the lion, the great king of the jungle." Anybody could have written this. There is nothing unique about her experience, at least from what she shows us. I got through the first 90 pages of the book in forty five minutes, and only decided to finish it because it went by so fast and had decent pictures. But I recommend that you don't waste your time, if you have better resources available.
Just like if you were there, excellent !.......1999-01-28
Astonishing pictures, incredible text putting in words the incredible feelings associated with an African Safari in the Serengeti. Just came back from there and this book really gave me multiple flash backs.

A truly magnificent manuscript on the African wild!.......1998-10-13
This is a "must" for all those who have been on an African safari, or who are contemplating this magical journey. This manuscript is practical, offering tips for first-timers, and beautifully written so that the reader will understand the animals' behavior. In addition, there are over 700 gorgeous photographs, obviously taken by a photographer who understands his subject matter. Indeed, one need not go far to read others' works. The author includes excerpts from Hemingway, Dinesen, Stanley and the like - those who fell in love in and with Africa. The truly adventuresome! The author also includes excerpts from his own diary which enlightens the reader to the humorous side of the African safari experience. It is truly the ultimate book!

A useful travel tool........2007-10-04
My husband and I honeymooned in Oahu. We took this and the Lonely Planet guide to Hawaii. Taking both gave each of us something to read on the plane. I'd take either or both again.
Large and informative.......2007-08-27
Better than Hawaii for Dummies but not as well organized. It's already saved us $80 in helicopter tours from what the cruiseline was charging us. There are great gift tips, too.
Ultimate.......2007-08-23
If you go anywhere, you'll have to get Frommer's books! They say all there is too say. Fantastic and a good vacation tool!
Must have companion for a first timer/newbie to Hawaii.......2007-06-21
I just returned from my first trip to Hawaii (business mostly, but vacation too) and this book was my constant companion. This is an incredibly useful book that described what to do, where to go and how to get around - this book is packed with detailed and useful information. All of the islands are described, and sample itineraries are provided for each of the islands. Like all the Frommer's travel books, this book will give you lots of ideas about what to see and where to eat and where to stay. There were some minor errors in the text (e.g. the bus passes are considerably more expensive than stated in the book), and I didn't always agree with their assessments of restaurants, but these are minor complaints. I wouldn't pay any attention to the negative reviews of this book, if you are a first timer to Hawaii, this book would be a great travelling companion.
Pretty useless.......2007-06-08
An encyclopedia, not a travel guide. I purchased this book, but had to purchase EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE instead. Very disappointing.

Not as good as Maui revealed.......2006-11-03
Maui Revealed was far better at pointing us in the right directions for "off the beaten path" activities and sights during our trip. Frommers Maui does have some helpful maps... but that was the extent of it's use for us.
Dissapointed.......2006-08-17
I should have followed other reviewers advice. I expected more from this brand name of book. If I had only read this book I'd have never wanted to explore many of these places. Luckily I also had a copy of Revealed and Maui Mile by Mile.
You'd Be Better Off With Another Book.......2006-06-14
This book was okay at best. First of all the pull out map is the worst I've seen. My husband and I decided to use it on our first day there - a highway pictured on the map showed a somewhat straight line going around one side of Maui. This road ended up being a one lane dirt road along the side of a sharp cliff with the most hairpin turn I've ever seen. Come to find out, most other Maui maps have a warning by this road for first time visitors telling them to be very cautious.
The layout of this book is horrible as well. Things were hard to find and I felt like I was in the index more than the actual book. We stayed near Pa'ia, and found that our Frommer's Maui mentioned several restaurants, but left out the amazing shops and the greatest grocery store on the island!
You'd be much better off buying Hidden Maui or Maui Revealed. When I finally ditched Frommers book and picked up one of the above mentioned, we were led to the most beautiful beach walk we've ever taken. These other books also not only tell you recommended places, but where not to go - which we wished we had know before hand. (FYI - don't visit the Enchanting Floral Gardens.)
Frommer's assumes that Maui is a well signed resort island - it's not. You need a book with more direction on how to actually find the beautiful spots on the island.
I wouldn't recommend this book.
Traveling to Hawaii? Get another book........2006-05-01
Generically written at best, Frommer's continues to fall short of its competitors in regards to Hawaii. This is the last time I'll purchase a Frommer's guide to any of the islands in Hawaii. The content is descriptive and thorough but the lack of illustrations and photographs makes the book rather dull and boring. Other books excell when Frommer's does not; as another reviewer hints at, don't waste your time with Frommer's unless you want a novel.
Maui.......2006-02-17
I ordered Books on Maui from Amazon and recieved the books in 2 days...........How great is that! I will do most of my shopping from Amazon and will pass the word on how great they are!
Thank You
Book Description
A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.
Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.
Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas costs $2,099. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $649. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.
Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.

Frommer Has a Winner Here.......2005-12-24
I hate most of the Frommer Travel books. They take the fun out of travel and have very few photos.
This book is different. Here they came up with something very useful and novel for the traveller. When you go on a cruise normally you do not have a clue. You just follow what your travel agent recommmends. But anyone that has taken an extended cruise or two knows there are big differences betweeen boat lines and routes etc.( I like Holland America myself). So here is a nice review of what boats and crusies are available, it describes the boats, and where they go and what you can expect including on board entertainment. All great stuff.
Highly recommend 4 or 5 stars. Buy before you talk to the travel agent.

Customer Reviews:
who needs this?.......2007-01-25
trully, i am from a very small town with minimal educational oppourtunities. I made my way into a very well respected graduate school without the help of a book like this. It is understood that applying for school is stressful, but so is applying for a job or a passport. The title is very accurate. If you took the time to study in highschool, took the time to research and think, you will do well on your exams as well as on your applications. While a BA/BS from Harvard may look great on the wall when compared to a "public school" remember, while the BA/BS degree is important in the real world no one really cares where it came from. I outrank a graduate from one of these ivy league schools and i graduated from a state school. Work hard no matter where you go to your undergraduate, then apply to an ivy leagus school as a graduate student. That is when the name matters. Spending 45K a year on a BA/BS degree is foolish when you can spend 6K a year to go to any state school. I have been there, i know. Freshman English lit at an ivy leagus school is the same english lit at state schools and community college. So stop stressing, stop wasting money on books that can not get you into any school if you did not work hard in highschool, and start focusing on becomming educated. That is the point of an education after all. This is supposed to be the best times of your life. Dont have it ruined by being ripped off and stressed out all day long. P.S. if for some reason highschool did not agre with you start at a sommunity college. Get real college experience and then go off to a 4 year school. It is not and never will be hopeless if you trully want an education you can get one.
disgusted me more than it helped.......2007-01-04
I regret buying this book. I was/am stressed out about getting in to college, and I expected this book to help. It just made me angry with its sugary-sweet spiritual advice like "reach for the stars" and "dig deep into the essence of your dreams" from Mimi Doe. It also stressed me out even more because of Hernandez's definitive-sounding instructions like, "Don't sign up for AP classes unless you plan on taking the AP exams" "get a job", and "[at an interview] boys can wear chinos or pants other than jeans with any regular shoe (as opposed to sneakers) with a button-down shirt or polo (no tie necessary)...Try to avoid any extreme statements (nose rings, Mohawks, spiked collars, tatoos, etc.)."
This book is just... creepy.
Don't Worry, You'll Get In.......2006-02-16
Given today's high-pressure environment surrounding college admissions, this book provides the necessary tips for avoiding the usual stress. I highly recommend it.
Fantastic.......2005-09-13
I love this book because it's about the only one my son will read...It's presented simply and is easy to digest.
I disagree with the reviewer who said it's not good tips on the right side...These are what calmed my frantic son down.
So, read this book if you or your child is stressed out about college.
Read "A is for Admission" instead. .......2005-09-09
I read this book because it was coauthored by Michele Hernandez one of the smartest private college counselor s. The book is divided into two. The left pages are written by Michele Hernandez consist of hard facts. The right pages are written by Mimi Doe and cover the emotional and spiritual aspects of college application.
Hernandez diluted her expertise with this coauthor arrangement. She short changed her reputation by using a format that looks like the result of a single brainstorming session. Indeed, the whole book is 15 pages of platitude spread over 200 pages. This is especially true of the right pages written by Mimi Doe. Her language is full of feel good banalities with zero informational value.
Just for fun, I went through the whole book and counted the concepts that were useful. I came with a score of 8 to 1 in favor of Hernandez. But that is out of about 100 mundane ideas stated by each. Thus, the yield of good ideas vs total ideas is only 8% for Hernandez (8/100) vs 1% for Mimi Doe.
Let me recommend better books on the subject. Hernandez "A is for Admission" and "Acing the College Application" are both excellent. "The Early Admission Game" by Avery and Fairbanks is a must for any one aiming at the most selective schools. Also, many of the Greenes' Guides written by the Greene brothers are very good. These include "Inside the Top Colleges", "Making it into a Top College" , "The Public Ivies", "The Hidden Ivies."
Book Description

Terrific for adding a special touch to letters! There's something for everyone. A little slow to print on my outdated system though.
