Excellent resource.......2007-09-08
We live on a lake and frequently refer to this book to identify our water and woodland snakes. This book is very user friendly.
FANTASTIC!.......2007-07-12
This is a wonderful seller. My guide arrived very promptly and in great condition!! Terrific buy!
Useful... not so user friendly.......2007-06-12
National Audubon's original field guide, and perhaps the most recent one, is much better organized and easier to use in the field.
I love this.......2006-11-25
I love this book because I have the National Audubon Society First Field Guide for reptiles and I would often run in to reptile that the I couldn't Identify. I knew that I needed a bigger better book. So I bought the western and eastern Peterson Field guide for reptiles and amphibians and it had a lot more reptiles and it had amphibian which I never had a book that had information about them before, it has a lot more reptiles and it's shows you were they are each located. It give you a detailed description of each animal and a detailed drawing of each animal. Because of this I have been able to identify reptiles and amphibian that I couldn't before. I don't like that the maps for the eastern book are not as easy to find for some of the animals.
Great Guide.......2005-02-21
I'm starting to get interested in amphibian id and was looking for a book to help as I join in on frog monitoring and other citizen science projects. So, I haven't gotten to use this book in the field yet since it's still midwinter but the book seems like just what I need. It's a typical field guide in that it has the species plates. Pictures in this section are well drawn with color variations and patterns clearly shown and also described in words. Then there are the species-specific entries where each animal is described, habitats and location maps are provided, foods are described, etc. What I especially like about this book is that in this section they also have actual photographs of the animals shown. The photos are close-up so you can see the eggs or the young of snakes for example. I especially love the section on salamanders and decided not to bother trying to get a book dedicated to salamanders just yet. This has all the info I'll need to get going on understanding and identifying these creatures. Looking forward to a trek out to the vernal pools in March and bringing this book with me.

Excellent for home and field use.......2007-04-07
Excellent book for novice and experienced alike. Tons of pertinent, useful information. This is a great book for educating entry level herpers. This is not a typical field book, having far more useful information for each species than most I have used. This is particularly helpful when dealing with similar species. More info on typical habitat, range, size, coloration, diet, etc. makes identification easier. A great addition to any library.
Four months and still waiting . . . ........2005-03-25
In fairness, I haven't even read this book. I ordered it in November, and I never received it. Twice Amazon.com asked for permission to extend the date of delivery of my order. Twice I agreed. The third time I said enough is enough. Forget it. I just got my money back, minus the amount I should have obtained from giving Amazon.com an interest-free four-month loan. Each time I was asked to consent to an extension on the delivery date I was denied an explanation for the delay.
I understand that this is more of an indictment of Amazon.com than it is the book, so it is unfair for me to give it the rating I have assigned it. But I just wanted Amazon.com's customers interested in this book that if you want it, be prepared to WAIT!!! (Or look for the book on bn.com.)
Great Guide!.......2004-01-05
I just bought the 2003 edition of this book, and I must say it is great! The pics are very good! On some of the variable species, there are more than one photo to show you the different forms. The author provides great information on every aspect of the snakes' lives including size, reproduction, prey, habitat, and relative abundance. The book is very easy to read and is a steal at that price for 600 well written pages on North American snakes!- Anthony J. Chodan
Good, accessible guide.......2001-08-29
A very good reference and field guide to snakes from Texas to North Dakota eastwards, aimed at enthusiasts and accessible to the average reader. It builds on Tennant's earlier books on Texas and Florida snakes (which were excellent), and in fact the text of the species accounts is often lifted more or less directly from those books. This makes this book less than original, but the detail -- over 600 pages worth -- is very good. Lots of photos, though each are a little small. This book is thicker, more thorough and generally stronger than the companion western volume (Snakes of North America: Western Region). It also has a good bibliography. One quibble, though -- the range maps often do not extend into Canada (though the Canadian ranges of the relevant snakes are discussed in the text), which reduces the usefulness of this book for Canadian readers. Recommended.
Snakes of North America : Eastern and Central Regions (Field.......2000-08-09
Overall I thought this book was well written, very comprehensive, and quite easy to use. The copy I purchased has a problem with some of the pages being out of order. The Western guide I have has the range maps for the hognoses reversed. These may be a function of the printing company's sloppiness. However, I believe this book is an important addition to any serious amateur or professional herpetologist or budding herpetoculturist.

Great Stories.......2007-09-18
This is a great read for any baseball fan. The stories span generations and give you a look into the history of the game and players. Makes you appreciate the nostalgia of America's game.
Number 1 Book to have on baseball history .......2006-06-05
This book is very interesting to read, I enjoyed this book because of the history, the writing of the time and pictures of the players. It has so much to cover, this book could of been twice the size and still not cover all the history. It has a lot of facts and so many great stories of the players, umpires and families of the players. It is a great book to go back to and use for a reference. I give it 5 stars.
If you enjoy this book get the magazine "Baseball Digest" for more great stories.
You will never sell this book once you buy it! Worth every penny! Does Amazon have a 6 star ranking?.......2006-04-04
"The Best of Baseball Digest" is truly the bargain of the century considering it's incredible content. I expected alot from this book and when it finally arrived it exceeded all of my expectations. There are over 116 enjoyable articles on baseball dating back to Baseball Digest's start in 1942. This massive collection of 453 pages is presented in a fashion in which the reader can read an article a day, yet it is entertaining enough to where you may have difficulties putting it down. Some of the baseball articles in this book are: Ty Cobb, How Connie Mack passed up the Babe, The Mickey Mantle I Know, When a Midget Batted as a Major Leaguer, Reggie's Moment, Rickey Henderson, The Day I Collected Babe Ruth's Autograph, When the Red Sox Terminated the Curse of the Bambino, Ichiro Suzuki a Hitting Sensation, and so many more. Not only are these articles written by some of the best in baseball and sports writing, but this book also contains close to 100 pictures that are both rare and shocking. This is truly one of the best baseball book purchases I have ever made. This one will be on my shelf forever to later pick up and be read once again. Robert Pedersen www.fatherachildsright.org

Book Description
A tongue-in-check, yet informative guide for the college bound student. No stduent should be without a copy. A "a George-Carlinesque swipe at the college industry."
Customer Reviews:
OK but nothing great.......2005-04-15
I was expecting more real advice from a book titled "College 101". The book is funny but it doesn't give any information to a student just starting out in college. All it does is "expose" the dark sides of college, like we don't already know it's a racket. For good or bad though, most people need a college degree to get the job/lifestyle they want so they've got to pay the piper eventually. If he could tell me how to gain admission into and graduate from Harvard for under $40,000 then that would be something!
The funniest thing about this book however is that the author has become that which he seems to hate most. He is someone making a huge amount of money selling books to college students!
Demasking the College Industry.......2001-08-28
It was about time that someone took a George-Carlinesque swipe at the college industry—that hallowed institution of higher learning, which, like so many other human institutions, [...]. The author of the review entitled “Seems like the dining hall was serving sour grapes!” got it all wrong! It appears that the only purpose of that review was to absolve and exculpate college bookstore monopolies from Mr. Stevens’ “demoralizing” look at reality. Guy Stevens’ shrewd and savvy observations, served up with wonderfully caustic sarcasm and a clever tongue-in-cheek rebel style, provides us with a refreshing counterbalance to the pious platitudes so many politicians and educators babble nowadays about the nobility of the academic pursuit. The author reveals the true nature—and sometimes horror—of the social underbelly of everyday college-campus life. This is an indispensable book for any college-bound high school senior. Pompous professors, avaricious bookstore owners, callous guidance counselors, and other self-serving inhabitants of our institutions of higher learning beware: This guy Guy is on to your tricks! A great buy for no more than the cost of three cafeteria meals and a bag of sour grapes.
College Kids.......2001-08-28
I purchased this book actually for my grandchild who was starting there first year of college. I read it myself first then gave it to him as a gift .The book has a lot of humor and tells of experiences that others have had during there college life. My grandchild was quite nervous starting out in college so I though this book might lighten the mood for him and that it gave advice of what to bring for dorm rooms and so on. I thought it was a great book for anyone starting out with there first year of college or later on. Very Well Done!!!
Seems like the dining hall was serving sour grapes!.......2001-08-24
This book seems rather amateurish. It contains many rants from the perspective of someone who sounds bitter and resentful about a less-than-perfect college experience. A good amount of the information is of a personal experience nature, and may not be widely applicable to other students. The author seems to have few or no credentials beyond having once been a college student himself (from what I could tell from the book). He freely discusses his pitfalls, goof-ups, bad decisions, and negative experiences--would you want advice from this guy? His writing style is furthermore contentious and angry, and mostly unpolished. He talks about exposing the dirty little secrets of college, but really there is nothing new here--and much of the malice he talks about is exaggerated. For example, no one forces you to buy books at the college bookstore. It's not a monopoly--it's just a convenience. You can't find college textbooks at your local shopping mall, so the bookstore exists to allow you to buy all your books in one place. His perspective seems to be heavily biased by his own experiences (and perhaps a bit of paranoia), and he hasn't discussed issues from more realistic viewpoints. Students would be better served with balanced information, such as knowing that the bookstore is convenient but that high operating costs (of switching over entire inventory several times a year) make alternatives attractive. I would be concerned that students reading this book will get an unrealistically negative impression of the college experience, and they might go to college expecting (and looking for) deception and malice, which might be demoralizing. I'd say students need a more encouraging resource than this. To be fair, the author does have some worthwhile things to say, but I think most of the truly useful information could be more easily learned from any random college student over a cup of coffee--and you won't get the same bitter aftertaste. Maybe more aggressive editing and/or a collaborator would have smoothed over the rough edges in the writing.
I also wasn't impressed by the quality of the book itself. It has a "rough around the edges" look and feel to it that I can't quite explain. But just look at the cover art--it looks like a pre-production mockup
College life from a skewed, humorus point of view........1999-03-26
While my ivy league days are fading to a haze now, this book brings up all of the old joys and pains of college life. The years may pass but it appears dorm life stays the same. This is a must read for any freshman in college and a great trip down memory lane for any graduate. Bravo!

Very good!!.......2007-04-03
This book is a mine of good ideas! Arm yourselves of coloured pencils to prove the colour coupling and give free rein to your imagination!!
A classic book!.......2004-04-20
This book contains tons of beautiful Chinese designs -- usually from ceramics or embroidery. Whenever I need a Chinese motif, I can find it here.
Like most Dover books, there's no real text to explain where the images came from or their significance. But for sheer volume of visual material, this book is a winner.
