Book Description

Here, the man who started the "food revolution" with the million-plus-selling Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. If, according to chaos theory, the beating of a butterfly's wing can cause a hurricane in another part of the world, try this out for chaotic cause and effect: monarch butterflies are dying in droves due to genetically-engineered corn growing in the Midwest. There is also a direct correlation between the Big Mac in your hand and the mile-wide river now running across the North Pole. Learn the truth about foods we are eating that are, in Robbins' words, "unsafe on any plate."

3 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, but Nothing New.......2007-10-08

This is a good book, interesting, even if, at times, it sounds a bit preachy. For someone new to the subjects discussed, this will probably have some eye opening spots, but for anyone who has been concerned about their health, the planet's health, and the way our diet affects the two, there is really no new information presented here.

1 out of 5 stars 1001 excuses for becoming or being a vegetarian.......2007-10-03

- If you haven't heard about genetically modified crops (GMO) - yes this book has some information.
- If you did not know what factory farms do to your average supermarket meat - yes this book has some information.

There are books with better information on these topics however.

The focus of this book seems to be "why you should be a vegetarian and eat organic non-GMO veggies" but there seems to be no mention of hydrogenated oils, refined sugar, bleached flour or high fructose corn syrup. Reducing or removing these from your diet can make a huge difference in your health as well.

This and other vegetarian books don't really take into consideration diets that include meats from animals that are raised properly, just those meats available in most supermarkets. To me this is key. I was vegetarian for... maybe around a year. I was not happy, I was not healthy. I've also known people who were once vegetarian who have become healthier by eating at least small amounts of organic meats (and in some cases a fair amount of meat.)

I personally accept that there are some people who need LESS meat than others, I wish the vegetarian community would accept that some people need more meat than others.

There ARE vital nutrients available in meat.

Think grass fed cows, chickens that actually get to roam decent sized areas of land and eat bugs, wild fish that swim free in the oceans... Meat free of antibiotics, growth hormones, and pesticides. Also slaughtered in a quick and humane way instead of cut apart alive.

I wouldn't have had such a problem with it if vegetarianism hadn't been the main focus of the book. If I wanted a book on vegetarianism, I would have picked up a book on vegetarianism.

I would bet that the majority of the statistics in this book did not do studies on people who ate quality meat instead of meat raised on factory farms pumped full or hormones and antibiotics and fed crap.

If you are a vegetarian already or part of PETA, you will probably love this book.

I was however extremely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2007-05-16

This is one of those books that changed my life so much that I feel bad for people who have not read it.
This book will remain, for all time, the best $10 I have EVER spent.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Will Change How You Think About Your Food!!!!!!.......2007-05-13

This is an incredibly well researched book, and will change forever the way you relate to food. After reading this book I will NEVER put another bite of non-organic meat or dairy in mouth EVER. And my appetite for meat in general is pretty diminished. What you will read in this book is so important, it should be taught in schools. It should be mandatory reading for everyone. This is not an "anti-meat" book, it simply lifts the veil on "factory farming" and Big Agriculture for the general public to get an idea of what our supposed "farms" are up to in this country, and it is truly disturbing. Not only are there moral injustices happening that you would not believe possible, but the health implications of what is going on should make everyone with any sense in their brain stop eating meat unless they know where it comes from. What this book gives us that the original "Diet for a New America" did not is more information on genetic engineering, and the ever-increasing efforts of industry to get bigger, faster, cheaper...at what price?! Be an informed citizen and consumer! Read this book! Read this book, and then make up your mind. I guarantee you will never feel the same about food.

5 out of 5 stars If you care about the world around you, this book will change your life........2007-05-10

Every once in a while, I come across a book that impacts the way that I think. This is one of those books.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

When it comes time to tell the class what she did on her vacation, Olivia isn't at all nervous. In fact, she remembers it quite clearly--she went to the circus, you see. "But when we got there, all the circus people were out sick with ear infections." What are the odds? But the show must go on! Fortunately, Olivia jumps right in to help out--riding elephants, posing as the Tattooed Lady (she draws on the pictures with a marker), taming lions, walking tightropes, juggling, clowning around, and more. In a marvelous fold-out, four-panel spread, our porcine heroine even reigns supreme as the Queen of the Trampoline. "And that's how I saved the circus. And now I am famous." Olivia looks proud. Her teacher looks mad. Ian Falconer shines in this dryly hilarious sequel to his 2001 Caldecott Honor Book Olivia. The charcoal and gouache illustrations perfectly capture Olivia's earnest expressions. Be prepared to be charmed anew! (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

4 out of 5 stars Cute, but not my favorite Olivia tale.......2007-04-21

The first two pages are the best in "Olivia Saves the Circus." That aside, the basic story is that Olivia, during show-and-tell, "embellishes" her trip to the circus. The drawings are fabulous as usual, but the plotline is a little dry. Still, my daughter loves it because it does capture the spirit of Olivia, though the story is very one-dimensional compared to the other Olivia books. And check out Olivia's "Remember the Maine" tatoo - it's a hoot!

5 out of 5 stars My dad and I love this book!.......2007-04-20

The illustrations are very vivid. Ian Falconer can really think like a kid. A lot of times authors do that but its a little much.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-29

My daughter and I love reading Olivia books. The stories and the illustrations are great and very funny.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-03-11

This book, as the other Olivia books, is witty and creative. Unfortunately, the book is rendered worthless and inappropriate by the poor content. Olivia lies. Yes, all children enjoy fantasy, but when she's directly asked for the truth, she lies. Again, most kids will try that at least once. But for Olivia, there are no consequenses. What an awful message for children.
It gets worse. She shows a very negative attitude about her "boring uniform" that she has to wear to school. What a brat. And at the end she intentionally defies her mother, and of course, no consequenses. Blech. It's worthless, which is too bad because this author definately has talent.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as hoped.......2007-01-16

LOVED Olivia and the Missing Toy, wished I'd read Olivia Saves the Circus in a bookstore because I wouldn't have bought it. Very disappointed.

On a Fourth of July picnic with his human family, McDuff, a beloved but trouble-mongering white terrier, inadvertently allows "silent invaders" (namely, ants) to make off with the entire contents of the lunch basket. Luckily, McDuff has a way with strangers (and their picnic baskets), and in no time flat, he's finagled an invitation from a lonely older man to share his meal with the family.

Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers's series about the earnest pooch and his expanding community of friends and family harkens back to quainter days, when baby carriers were buckled into cars with leather straps and kind gentlemen didn't mind sharing their fried chicken and devil's food cake with strangers. Jeffers's inviting paintings of 1930s cars and fashions, and of course the little white dog himself, are warm and appealing. Readers who loved McDuff Goes to School and McDuff's New Friend will enjoy this summery entry in the series. (Ages 3 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars McDuff Saves the Day.......2007-07-05

As with all 'McDuff' stories, this book is very well drawn, and a child could tell it to an adult based on the pictures in the book, after the child had heard the story a few times. It is charmng, friendly telling of a fun family outing. All McDuff books would be good in daycares for story time!

5 out of 5 stars A Dog's Life: Everything Goes McDuff's Way!.......2005-01-31

McDuff, the irrepressible White Highland Terrier, joins owners Fred, Lucy, and their little baby for a traditional Fourth of July picnic in this immensely satisfying book. Susan Jeffers' beautiful rich colors, blend of comic strip panels and large-format pictures, and attention to period accuracy convincingly portray the post-war patriotism, hope, and economic prosperity of the late 1940's and early 1950's. Her drawings evoke Norman Rockwell, Boy Scout magazines, and the woodblock pictures that graced early children's books, and they are a major factor in the book's huge appeal.

Rosemary Wells once again writes a McDuff series book with humor, warmth, and just a bit of mischief, qualities found in her famous "Max and Ruby" series (e.g., "Max's Dragon Shirt"). There's Lucy and Rick tomfoolery in the opening scenes as McDuff and Fred keep switching seats during the drive. Finally:

"Fred had to sit in the backseat with the baby and the chicken. 'He always gets the front seat in the end,' said Fred. McDuff stretched out in the front seat and fell into a sausage-squirrel dream."

Wells and Jeffers also pull off a clever perspective switch as we see McDuff's version of how the picnic disappeared. In McDuff's version, marauding ants "penetrated the picnic basket by the hundreds. In a few short minutes, the picnic was gone." We see five ants (only 5!) ferreting away a sandwich, and organized, orderly lines of ants absconding with cookies, candy, and cupcakes. Jeffers, as masterful with facial expressions as with large-scale compositions, shows McDuff conveniently looking away, trying hard to look innocent.

And just how does McDuff save the day? By eating the meatballs of neighboring picnicker Mr. DiMaggio. (The authors go a little heavy on an Italian stereotype here.) After DiMaggio yells for help, the family joins him in a generously shared, copious lunch. As now expected from the ever-fortunate dog, McDuff gets a turkey-and tomato sandwich out of it! A glorious fireworks display ends this idyllic Fourth, as Fred, once again, winds up in the front seat. This is an exceptional book, with outstanding pictures, imaginative humor, and a gentle but compelling narrative.

4 out of 5 stars Wells' adorable Westie is a day saver........2003-07-02

I really enjoyed reading this book to 16 preschoolers at the Festus Public Library in Festus, Missouri. As a storytime book, McDuff Saves the Day makes for a fun and entertaining read. The artwork and story are beautiful and creative. The plot is charming, simple and realistic, giving McDuff (a fluffy white Westie) a perfect opportunity to be the cute dog that he is. This is my first McDuff story and I thouroughly enjoyed it. All dog lovers should have this in their children's book collection.
In this adventure, McDuff celebrates the Fourth of July with his family: Lucy, Fred and the baby. A perfect day for a picnic turns into a series of mishaps that leaves the family without a picnic and a cranky baby. By the end of the story, McDuff has found a way to have a picnic and make a new friend. Fred still complains though, because McDuff always gets to ride in the front.

4 out of 5 stars Woa! This book will blow you away!.......2003-04-10

I love this book! I like when McDuff has to sit by the baby then on Lucy's lap and then Fred has to sit in the back seat and McDuff sits in front. My name is Fred and Fred's name is Fred!Mcduff steals everyone's picnic because his picnic was stolen by ants. He steals a man's food so Lucy and Fred come eat with the man and the man isn't lonely and Lucy and Fred get food and watch fire works!

5 out of 5 stars A fun and zany tale.......2002-08-05

Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers' McDuff Saves The Day takes place on July 4th and tells of the bouncy dog's plans to celebrate. McDuff's ride in the family car is particularly hilarious and realistic as he bounces between seats, baby, and chicken versus marrowbone. A fun and zany tale.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures and Helpful Tips.......2007-03-22

This is a compact hardback book with some incredible photographs of various places and things in our natural world. It does have some good tips for helping the environment although these suggestions are basically repeated towards the middle of the book. The book is worth it for the pictures alone.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful!.......2007-02-22

The pictures are all beautiful! The ways they have to help the Earth are well organized and very practical!

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, however it disobeys its own first suggestion :-(.......2006-04-16

Good photos and points made, but #1: Recycle?

Yes, yes, that's why not ONE page of this book is made from post-consumer material (i.e., the paper stock that this book uses isn't even recycled, despite recycling being the first point made in the book!)

SO, #1: don't buy this book, get it from a library instead.

4 out of 5 stars Great Green Gift Book.......2006-03-21

I have ordered this book as a gift for numerous friends and family members. It is a beautiful and thought-provoking introduction to environmentally-friendly behaviors in a time when most Americans aren't thinking about the problems we have created in our environment.

5 out of 5 stars 365 Ways to Save the Earth is a wonderful book.......2006-02-25

I bought 5 copies as gifts for Christmas.

I gave it to some friends, to my grandmother. The whole family was looking at the beautiful pictures. I had my uncle reading the daily inspiring messages.

"It brings me peace when I read this book, a day at a time" my grandmother said.

Highly recommended! I even kept a copy for myself.

Book Description

Go to any unpopulated or abandoned urban area, and you'll find them. Countless thousands of wild dogs-abandoned to disease, starvation, and inevitable death-are leading brutal lives in the no-man's-land between domestication and wildness. A lucky few are saved by dedicated rescuers, and Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, has become one of the country's lead-ing dog saviors. In this book, journalist Melinda Roth narrates Grim's dramatic efforts and describes the horrific and heart-warm-ing cases he encounters, showing how this growing national health problem-controlled by no federal or local laws-can no longer be ignored. This edition includes a new afterword about Grim's rehabil-itation of Quentin, the dog who recently made national head-lines by miraculously surviving a gas chamber.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Story.......2007-04-17

Randy Grim is one of the most incredible people I have ever read about. His sacrifice of time, money and love during his attempt to save the most unwanted of the unwanted, America's abandoned street dogs, is totally amazing.

The stories are incredible and moving. You face the real drama of dogs living in fear of man yet, Randy Grim goes out on the lonely city streets and into abandoned buildings to reach every dog he can. He saved them from injury, starvation and death, not only during the day but at night as well.

This is a book everyone should read, everyone. Whether you love dogs or not, this book will make an impact on your life. You will do some real soul searching about the need for each one of us to help with this mission.

5 out of 5 stars This is one amazing book!.......2006-07-17

Never has a book had such an impact on me. I am an avowed dog-lover, but with all the dog books I have read, I have never been so moved as I was by the story of Randy Grim and his fight to save stray dogs. I could not recommend this book strongly enough to anyone who cares about animals. Randy is an EXTRAORDINARY human being, and even though he does not want it, he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. And this recognition can only help the cause of his fight for stray animals. You go, Randy! I love you!

5 out of 5 stars Should Serve as an Inspiration to Anyone who Loves Dogs.......2005-11-18

Wonderful book. A real eye opener as to the conditions of some urban areas. Only goes to show that you don't have to be volunteering at Ground Zero to be a hero.

3 out of 5 stars The Dog Rescuer.......2005-08-21

Poignant and disturbing if a bit disjointed. More than talking to dogs, Randy Grim understands their needs and has at times puts himself in harm's way to rescue abandoned, feral dogs from warehouses, abandoned apartments and houses, and fields. He has turned his difficulty communicating with humans into a useful, compassionate, even obsessive need to save these dogs. The stories don't link together very well and I'd like more insight and history into Randy himself, but overall, the book leaves you feeling that you want to help, too.

5 out of 5 stars good on more than one level.......2005-05-18

A good read because I had no clue what the stray/feral dog situation was like, other than the occassional statistic thrown out. I learned a lot about that situation, as well as what often goes on in the dog breeding industry and the pet stores. Worse than I could have imagined. I almost didn't read this book because I was afraid of becoming too sad about the whole stray dog situation, but I read it anyway because I have six dogs and various behavioral broblems. I wanted some insight. I figured that if this guy rescues and rehabilitates those with the worst behavioral and emotional problems, then I could definitely get some insight into my own dogs, all of which were unwanted. But I didn't want to start with the typical sterile information you find in dog training books. I feel that "The Man Who Talks to Dogs" gave me the insight I needed into understanding the behaviors I'm seeing in my own dogs. I have made a few changes in how I relate to them and things are becoming more harmonious. There is also good information on Randy's web site strayrescue.com.

Book Description

The tragedy of extinction is explained through the dramatic story of a legendary bird, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and of those who tried to possess it, paint it, shoot it, sell it, and, in a last-ditch effort, save it. A powerful saga that sweeps through two hundred years of history, it introduces artists like John James Audubon, bird collectors like William Brewster, and finally a new breed of scientist in Cornell's Arthur A. "Doc" Allen and his young ornithology student, James Tanner, whose quest to save the Ivory-bill culminates in one of the first great conservation showdowns in U.S. history, an early round in what is now a worldwide effort to save species. As hope for the Ivory-bill fades in the United States, the bird is last spotted in Cuba in 1987, and Cuban scientists join in the race to save it.

All this, plus Mr. Hoose's wonderful story-telling skills, comes together to give us what David Allen Sibley, author of The Sibley Guide to Birds calls "the most thorough and readable account to date of the personalities, fashions, economics, and politics that combined to bring about the demise of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lord God, what a book!.......2006-04-01

At the risk of sounding blasphemous let me simply say "Lord God, what a book!" This book belongs on your MUST READ list!

This is a perfect example of how nonfiction should be written. Every school and public library should have a copy of this book. It is a valuable addition to the study of man, nature, and the environment.

Phillip Hoose's wonderful book captures the reader's attention and doesn't let it go till the very end of a beautifully written account of one of the most magnificent birds ever to grace this land. The cover of the book, not to mention the title, immediately attracts attention and after reading it the reader clearly understands why this bird was referred to as the Lord God Bird.

Hoose introduces us to collectors like Brewster and Wayne who helped lead to the bird's demise. There are the corporate villains in the form of the Chicago Mill and Lumber Company and the Singer Manufacturing Company who could have saved the last real refuge of the Lord God Bird but who chose profit over conservation when the Singer Tract was not spared from the woodcutter's ax. There are heroes to this story. You will meet Jim Tanner, "Doc" Allen, and J. J. Kuhn who worked tirelessly to save the species. Having read this book I felt that Jim Tanner was definitely someone I wished that I had known personally.

Educators will find countless lessons on environmental awareness, extinction of species, and the recklessness with which man has "civilized" the wilderness.

Well done Mr. Hoose, well done.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing Non-fiction .......2006-03-23

I picked this book up based on recommendations from online reader groups who said it would read more like fiction than non-fiction. They were right! Hoose has meticulously researched the plight of the "Lord God Bird", the ivory-billed woodpecker, documenting the efforts to locate the dwindling population and the sad effects of man vs. nature. Well highlighted by photographs, we follow the loss of this magnificent creature as its habitat is swallowed up by man's greed in the first half of the twentieth century. Hoose's writing is vivid and engrossing and caused me to do that rarest of things---go online and research more for myself. Most interesting of all is that just after this book was published, there have been reports of the rediscovery of the ivory-bill! This is a wonderful book appropriate for people of all ages and especially those who are worried about the endangerment of species by mankind's shortsightedness. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars The Lord God Bird.......2005-11-18

I thought that this book was well written, reasearched, and thought through. But as a 12 year old I didn't enjoy it quite as much as i think an older person would. I think that the author wrote the stories well, and made them very drawing. This book was not one of my favorite books, partially because it was very hard to read. The other reason was beause to me it was a bit confusing. I could see him doing a kids version of the same book, but making it a bit simpler or shorter. I thought that the author did a great job in writing this book, but I think you should wait to read it until you are a bit older. Some people I know thought it was a great book, but they're older than me. So again I thought that this was an o.k. book, but not a great kid's read.

4 out of 5 stars The Lord God Bird.......2005-11-17

I thought that this book was well written, and thoroughly researched, but I didn't enjoy it very much. It was a very sad book. The author did a great job writing the story's fact for fact, but there were some parts where you say "awwww" and feel bad for these birds. In one story he wrote, a man went on a hunting trip to find a "Lord God Bird" and killed a family of them, including two babies. The hunter also killed many more birds that trip. I would not recommend this book unless you enjoy sad stories. It is one of those books that draws you into certain stories, but in between them you really want to put the book down.

4 out of 5 stars Studying the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker and Trying Too Late to Save It........2005-11-08

"The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" is a chronicle of the history and demise of the ivory-billed woodpecker. It was written for children ages 9-12 but is perfectly suitable for adults as well. The book is large format in size, which makes the font bigger, but there is just as much text on each page as in an adult book, and there is nothing conspicuously juvenile about it. The large dimensions allow for nice black-and-white photographs of ivory-bills, their habitat, and the people who studied the birds.

Author Phillip Hoose follows human interest in the ivory-bill woodpecker from Alexander Wilson's encounter with the bird in 1809 as he was working on his 9-volume "American Ornithology" to John James Audubon's work sketching the bird in natural poses around 1820. By 1900, large scale deforestation in Southern states had made the ivory-bill rare. At this point, "The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" turns its attention to the collectors who were continuing to mine the population when they clearly shouldn't have been and the beginnings of organized conservation efforts, starting with the "Plume Wars" that sought to end the slaughter of birds to decorate ladies' hats. It describes the 1935 Cornell University expedition by Jim Tanner, George Sutton, Arthur "Doc" Allen, and Paul Kellogg to record bird calls of nearly 100 species in the Tensas Swamp in Louisiana. That's followed up by an account of Jim Tanner's 3 years studying the few remaining ivory-bills for the Audubon Society, 1937-1939, from which he wrote his still-famous book.

As Tanner was creeping around in it, the Singer Manufacturing Company sold logging rights to the Singer Tract, where the last known ivory-bills lived, and efforts to preserve the forest by purchasing it failed. The ivory-billed woodpecker was declared extinct. A couple chapters are dedicated to recent searches for the ivory-bill in Cuba and the United States, but this book was published before the announcement in April 2005 that the ivory-bill may still live. In the back of the book, there are maps of the shrinking ivory-bill habitat 1800-present, a chronology of important dates in ivory-bill and bird conservation, a glossary of terms, a detailed list of sources, and an index. "The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" is a readable and informative account of the actions and circumstances that brought the ivory-bill woodpecker to near-extinction in spite of a persistent human fascination with the bird and concerted efforts to save it. For more information on sightings of the ivory-bill since it was presumed extinct in the 1940s, see Tim Gallagher's book "The Grail Bird: Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker".

Scarlett Saves Her Family is the amazing true story of the New York cat who miraculously rescued her five kittens from a raging fire. It was a freezing March night when firemen were called to a blaze at an abandoned garage in Brooklyn. Pitiful meows alerted the firemen to five tiny kittens that had been carried from the fire by their badly burned mother cat, who would not rest until every kitten was safe.

The 10 heartwarming chapters capture the amazing frenzy that Scarlett and her kittens generated. From the vets at the North Shore Animal Clinic where the felines were treated to Oprah Winfrey, thousands followed the story with baited breath. This wonderful tribute to animal bravery is told from the perspective of rescuers, vets, and the lucky new owners of the feline brood. The gorgeous photographs speak a thousand words; the severly burned Scarlett is barely recognizable as a cat, but later photographs reveal a healthy, happy animal. The kittens grow from tiny burned bundles into beautiful, fat cats. Scarlett Saves Her Family is an adorable book.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable story of love and courage!.......2001-05-11

When I first learned of this true life account of a very brave little mother cat, I was moved to tears. There is no creature on the planet, human or animal, who does not fear fire. Scarlet put her life at great risk, again and again, to save her five kittens. How great is a mother's love?

Scarlet may be just a cat to some, but to me she personifies everything a mother should be! If you care about animals, you can't help but love Scarlet. You will be deeply touched by the many caring humans who became intertwined in her little life. From the truly compassionate firefighter, David Gianelli, to the woman who eventually adopted Scarlet, you'll pleasantly savor and revel in the goodness of mankind.

This book should be recommended reading in our public schools because it lovingly teaches children compassion and virtues. Though the photos of a severely burned Scarlet are graphic, they poignantly illustrate the depth of her devotion and willingness to suffer pain in order to save the lives of her babies.

I loved this book. I love knowing that Scarlet is forever loved and cherished and has left a indelible memory in the hearts of caring people everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Scarlett Saves Her Family.......2001-04-11

If this book doesn't lift your spirits and make you feel like there are still compassionate people in this world then nothing will. It is a "can't miss" book for cat lovers -- or for anybody who has a heart. It's the tale of the power of a mother cat's love in saving her family of newborn kittens, and of the people who worked so hard to help them recover. It is an inspiring story to share.

5 out of 5 stars Scarlett!!.......2001-01-01

When I found out the book was out I just had to get it! Reading about her and seeing the pictures of how she was so hurt made me realize was a blessed cat she was. She went through hell to save her family. If this book does not make you both cry and feel great joy, then I wonder about you. Read this book, have your children read this book, you will love it!

5 out of 5 stars Love and compassion pour from the pages..........1998-05-07

Scarlett was once a nameless, unknown, unloved alley cat -- until a fire, set to the abandoned building that was "home" to her and her five month-old kittens, drove Scarlett to the act of bravery that has touched human hearts worldwide. Five times, Scarlett nosed through the smoke and flames to rescue her babies. Back and forth, carrying her infants to the slushy, winter-drenched street. Scarlett herself suffered massive burns; her eyes were swollen shut and much of her fur was singed away.

She was found in this state by fireman David Giannelli, who tenderly, urgently rescued Scarlett and her brood. From there, a human flood of care, compassion, love, and hope helped the feline family to heal from the trauma...and all (excepting one kitten, who died from a later viral infection) are now happy homebodies who I'm sure have entirely taken over the lives and hearts of their humans!

This story illustrates the very best of human and animal compassion. What better, irrefutable evidence for the intelligence, love, and courage of other species! Take it home and prepare to cry your heart out -- I did!

5 out of 5 stars A riveting, readable story of a bird's rescue and offers inspiration to any who read about human-influenced extinctions........2007-02-08

The California condor is the continent's largest birds, lives 50 years or more, often mates for life, and can fly some 150 miles in a day. Despite all these talents, the condor has trembled on the brink of extinction and only extraordinary measures have brought it back from its low of 22 individuals in the 1980s. The efforts to save the condor are chronicled in RETURN OF THE CONDOR: THE RACE TO SAVE OUR LARGEST BIRD FROM EXTINCTION, from the biologist who decided to capture the last remaining living wild condor to the controversial development of a captive breeding program and beyond. Both general-interest collections and those strong in natural history must have RETURN OF THE CONDOR: it's a riveting, readable story of a bird's rescue and offers inspiration to any who read about human-influenced extinctions.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story, beautifully written.......2006-10-26

I've never written a book review before, but I just read John Moir's Return of the Condor in much less time than it ordinarily takes me to read a book. I've had some interest in condors for some time, but the style in which this book is written will make it enjoyable for anyone. John's insightful and informative tale made me feel as though I was right in the middle of the evolving story of this magnificent bird. He has crafted a beautiful and compelling narrative infused with all the elation and discouragement enountered in the condor's dramatic recovery.
Try it, you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars What a story and I am not a nature book reader!.......2006-10-16

I should preface this by saying that I read voraciously but nearly all my books are international intrigue, mystery and sci fi. Occasionally I will branch out and read something different and usually it is non-fiction. I happened upon a copy of Return of the Condor and was struck by the cover. Having never seen one live and not even really knowing anything about condors, I flipped through the pages and looked at the magnificent color photos. Went back and read the first chapter and I was hooked. Although it is a true story it reads more like a novel with both intrigue and tenderness. I read it in one sitting and found myself wishing it had continued on past its ending. This is an excellent read even for someone who has little or no interest in birds or nature. It is fascinating, extremely well-written and engrossing.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining.......2006-10-13

Condors are North America's largest birds, with wingspans of nearly 10 feet. They are also highly intelligent-and extremely rare. John Moir's passionate writing shows how a team of dedicated scientists pulled this fascinating creature back from the brink of extinction (in 1982 there were only 22 CA condors left in the world). But it wasn't easy, and the process was fraught with bitter controversy between those who wanted to leave the birds alone and let them live "free" versus those who argued in favor of collecting data by radio tagging some birds and capturing others.

Moir has done an amazing job of researching this story, and his background as a birder and science writer shine through on every page. He also doesn't pull any punches that the condor is not yet saved, and that solving the problem of the birds being poisoned from consuming lead bullet fragments from hunter-shot game must be solved for the recovery program to succeed.

You don't have to be a "birder" to thoroughly enjoy this engrossing story. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2006-10-13

This book is not only a remarkable tribute to the condor and the scientists who have worked to save it, but a captivating story as well.

When the book arrived, I thought I'd take a few minutes to glance through it. Two hours later, I was still reading. Moir immerses you in the world of the condor with his eloquent writing and keen sense of story. Some of the most interesting sections are his first-person accounts of his adventures with recovery team biologists.

Moir also links the condor's plight to the Sixth Extinction--the planet-wide loss of species that threatens our environment--and argues that saving the condor offers hope in saving other endangered species.

"Return of the Condor" is a beautifully written book... a page turner that anyone can enjoy.

Book Description

Here is the riveting tale of Gerald Durrell's adventures and misadventures in the enchanted forests of Madagascar, in search of the elusive Aye-aye.

Once thought to be extinct, the Aye-aye, the beast with the magic finger, still lurks, though in fast dwindling numbers, in the forests of Madagascar. Durrell's mission to help save this strange creature turns into a madcap journey in which you will meet not only the enigmatic Aye-aye, but the catlike Fosa, the Flat-tailed tortoise, the Gentle lemurs of Lac Alaotra, and the Malagasy chameleons, among others. Truly nothing escapes Durrell's sharp eye, whether he is describing the great zoma (market), the village dances, the treacherous bridges and river crossings, the strange foods and stranger music, or the vagaries of local officialdom.

As the San Francisco Chronicle noted, "It is impossible for Gerald Durrell to write anything that is less than exuberant, eccentric, and amusing." And in his account of this "rescue mission", Durrell is, quite simply, at his superb best.

4 out of 5 stars durrell continues.......2006-10-29

This book is another interesting as well as entertaining product from Gerald Durrell, drawing on his lifetime as a collector and conservator of endangered and unusual wildlife. Well worth reading - several times!

5 out of 5 stars Aye-aye!.......2003-12-08

With a career spanning decades and continents, and with a gift for writing witty and articulate accounts of his animal-catching adventures in so many different times & places, it seems predictable that the originality and enthusiasm which Gerald Durrell offers should vary from story to story or from book to book. And they do; some volumes are ecstatically joyous and quite fast-paced, while a few stories drag a bit or feature rather sarcastic caricatures of certain persons. Overall, however, I find Durrell's writing some of the most amusing and informative stuff that I've encountered in the last year. Therefore I have bought a copy of every Gerald Durrell title that I've located. It's quality stuff that I intend to keep long-term and reccomend to friends. "The AyeAye and I" is no exception, and I am pleased to have a hardcover edition. Thanks, Amazon!

2 out of 5 stars Durrell has gotten old and it shows.......2003-11-20

I have always admired Gerald Durrell as a writer; his zoological/ecological achievements, while very noteworthy, have not been so important to me when reading his books.
From this standpoint, 'Aye-aye and I' was a great disappointment; the sparkling humor of 'Three Tickets to Adventure' and especially 'My Family and Other Animals' has all but disappeared. The author has gotten old and bitter and it really shows throughout the book. He keeps complaining about the degrading ecological state of Madagascar, his own health and other issues, and while his environmental concerns are undoubtedly valid, it makes the book a somewhat depressing read.
Now if you have actual interest in lemurs, Madagascar or Durrell's scientific work, by all means go ahead and by this book. However, if you are looking for something entertaining, skip it and get some of his older works instead.

4 out of 5 stars loquacious lemurs make good.......2002-08-24

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, being already more than sold on the value proposition presented by lemurs of all shapes and sizes. I'm convinced that the lemur is destined to become the most popular primate of the millenium, and this book should be at the top of the charts for those wishing to catch the rising tide of lemur fanatics. The San Francisco Zoo's new Lipman Family Lemur Forest exhibit presents two of only twelve Aye-ayes in the United States, and having visited it recently I now plan to return next weekend to apply the newfound in-depth Aye-aye background I've gleaned from my reading of this book. Moreover, lemurs are but the tip of the iceberg here! Rife with hilarious descriptions of Giant Jumping rats, tortoises, and grubs of all shapes and sizes, Durrell's personal tone, dry wit, and entertaining presentation kept me amused and reading until the wee hours of the morn. I'll be seeking out more of his works, and would happily recommend this to anyone with an interest in lemurs, obscure regions of the world, travel, conservation, the Aye-aye, and furry or reptilian critters, period.

5 out of 5 stars Aye-ayes are wonderful!.......2001-01-09

This book was absolutely fabulous. As a college student interested in someday studying aye-ayes in the forests of Madagascar, reading this book was sheer pleasure. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested at all in lemurs, Madagascar, or simply in animal anecdotes or conservation.
