The Cougar Almanac.......2006-03-22
I was not only disappointed with this book, I was surprised by the propaganda type nature of its content. While well written, the known facts about the animals were skewed or omitted, replaced, instead by the author's decidedly biased opinions. I was further disheartened by the lack of any of the definitive biological works on these great cats in the works cited. He pulls some information from the work of Hornocker, but fails to include findings that don't fit the authors point of view. While taking the books published date into account,it still failed to offer findings of recent studies on the cats. I purchased this book in hopes of using it in a college paper and found it fell short of current facts, instead relying on personal point of view that is too subjective to include in any biological paper that is concerned with the truth. My biggest fear is that someone reading this book will mistake it for a completely factual work. Furthermore, his obvious dislike of hunters and his degrading belief that it is based on lower moral standards is enough to repel most open minded readers. It might be considered low morals to not print the facts that he claims do not exist.
Informative but preachy.......2004-12-29
This book is a survey of the cougar's natural history, including its habitat, distribution and behavior. The material is interesting, well written, and informative, and the book's many photos (some in color) are excellent. Unfortunately, the author's analysis of mankind's relationship to the cougar is a formulaic, cliche-ridden sermon that reprises an ever popular eco-myth. His essential premise -- yawn, we've heard this before -- is that Native Americans lived in reverential harmony with cougars until Europeans arrived to despoil the Americas. As a result, cougars - and other wildlife - have been pushed to the brink of extinction, and so right-thinking people must "bring cougars back" by resisting their ignorant neighbors' hysterical demands for cougar extermination. If you are an eco-religionist, you may enjoy hearing this familiar sermon preached again. But if you are searching for facts and an objective analysis of a more complex reality, then this book falls short. For example, although the author cites the research of Maurice Hornocker (perhaps the world's foremost cougar biologist), he fails to mention that Hornocker has said, "There are probably more lions in North America now than when Columbus hit our shores..." This hardly supports the author's "brink of extinction" hysteria. Similarly, the author's "blame-it-on-the-europeans" story-line fails to acknowledge that John Muir - a Scot who immigrated from Europe to America as a boy - launched the modern environmental movement by writing wilderness-advocacy books that were hugely popular with his Victorian audience. Nor does the author mention that broad public support for the preservation of wilderness existed by the mid-19th century (think of Thoreau, who reminded us that "In wildness is the preservation of the world"). So the actual facts regarding Europeans' impact on North American wildlife (and of America's attitude toward wilderness) is both more positive and more complex than the author's simplistic, stereotyped claims admit. A special problem with this book is its analysis of cougar attacks, which promotes a misleading and potentially dangerous theme. The author states that it is "contrary to the cat's nature" for cougars to attack people - a claim which must seem truly bizarre to cougar victims. And although the author grudgingly concedes that attacks have occurred (and are apparently increasing in frequency), he minimizes them by noting that many of the attacking lions may have been too sick to hunt for their "normal prey". Or they were females who were only protecting their young. But while the author attempts to validate these views by referencing the research of Paul Beier (another distinguished cougar biologist), he fails to mention that the data actually show that a large fraction of attacks are made by healthy, unprovoked cougars who clearly regard humans as prey. And although Beier's data record a few attacks by female lions with cubs, they do not show that the attacks were meant to protect the cubs. As a result of such flaws, this book is a distinctly mixed bag. It contains many interesting facts, but the author's analysis of them is often simplistic, and so his conclusions are sometimes mistaken. Let the reader beware!
Everything you wanted to know about cougars.......2001-01-17
This is a wonderful book! I've always been interested in cougars and now that they are showing up in my state where they haven't been spotted for a hundred years, I find the cats even more intriguing. Mr. Busch has written a great book and good pictures too!
short but sweet.......2000-09-06
Although this almanac is a bit on the short side, it is packed with information on the cougar, including a lot of information not found elsewhere. The photos are good, and the maps are fine, but it is the colorful writing that caught my eye on this one. Many almanacs are dry dry dry. This is one is not and should be purchased by anyone who loves the big cats.

buy a copy of harley shaw's "soul among lions" and you will have a better understanding of the puma's role in the west

It is in these stats, and thousands more, that the mysteries of the game begin to reveal themselves.

Baseball Encyclopedia.......2004-05-25
Are you an avid baseball enthusiast. Do you have every available statistic at the tip of your tongue? If so, this book is for you. It consists of a plethora of baseball statistics from 1871
onward to the present day. Key statistics pertaining to starting pitchers, saves, stolen bases, Hall of Famers and hometown heroes are listed in this encyclopedia for ease of reference.
This work would be very helpful for a class project on the subject of baseball. It is a solid value for the price charged.
First of its kind... but now out of date.......2002-12-08
Historically, this was the first book that attempted to compile statistical data for all-time players so the MacMillan Encyclopedia will always have its place. Today, other volumes (Total Baseball, STATS All-Time Major League Handbook, www.baseball-reference.com) are better resources. Acknowlegde that this book was important 20 years ago, but buy a different book today.
As good as a reference work can get.......2001-07-15
Given that _no_ book of baseball statistics can possibly be without errors (or controversies!), this book surpasses all its competition. My most recent edition of this is the eighth edition (complete through the 1989 season). I wanted to buy the latest version, but given that this copy only goes through 1995 (and the supplement through 1996), you can imagine my disappointment. Nevertheless...
This book is remarkable, especially for the scope of what it attempts. Most baseball references only have lifetime records and statistics for the American and National Leagues. This book has complete statistics for all _six_ major leagues throughout history, team lineups, standings, and season records for each of those leagues, managers' records, every trade made in baseball, every postseason series, every All Star game, a National Association register, and an admirable (albeit understandably incomplete) register of Negro League players.
Finally, I can think of only one reason a baseball fan might be disappointed with The Baseball Encyclopedia. As a book of statistics, this is a reference work, and not a collection of colorful stories. There are scores of great baseball books out there to enjoy. However, one of the great joys of baseball is that whether you're looking at this year's stars or those from the 19th century, statistics can paint a very vivid picture of anyone. The Baseball Encyclopedia displays that picture better than any other work. Reading about Babe Ruth's mighty swing is one thing, but seeing the numbers in black and white is staggering.
Especially when you realize he had 94 pitching wins as well. Whew!

I'm awaiting the next edition. I believe (hope) they're waiting for the last Century to "offically" end (Rumor) before the next edition. FYI: the first day of the 21st Century is 1/1/2001.

I have used this tome as my bible for years. I have run into former baseball players who swear they were players for a major league team but are not listed. I still have not figured out how often it is revised.

Oxford Take Off In Italian.......2007-02-01
The package includes a 248 page paperback book, 5 CDs, and a smaller book with extra vocabulary. The book covers basic grammar well,enough to make oneself understood in the language. Each of 14 chapters has dialogues to illustrate grammatical points, vocabulary lists, and quizzes,and also a continuous story of 2 young people (Un amico di troppo, a friend too many!)that runs all through the book. At the end of the book, there are answers to the quizzes, and a summary of the grammar taught earlier. Most helpful are the CDs in which native Italian speakers go over the same material as in each chapter, in a well coordinated way. I found hearing proper pronunciation and seeing the same words written was a big advantage. Chapters cover useful information on family, numbers, finding the way, traveling, eating out, booking a hotel or apartment, health problems, pharmacies, shopping,etc. The grammar covers, for example, past perfect and imperfect, present, future and conditional tenses but not the subjunctive.
Compared to the other Italian do-it-yourself tutorials I have tried, it was my favorite. DK 15-minute Italian illustrated book with CDs is good but has little grammar, seems more for people wanting a brief introduction to the language. Hugo Italian in 3 months is of similar depth to the Oxford book, but I preferred the layout of the latter. A first year college book, Prego! by Lazzarino et al, is much more detailed for the serious student; a teacher is needed as the answers to the quizzes are not given. Italian with Michel Thomas has good CDs, but had no accompanying text, a drawback.
I can strongly recommend the Oxford Take Off In Italian book for those who want more than a vacation phrase book but do not need as much as a college textbook.

I believe the book is now out of print, but if you're lucky you might be able to pick it up at a comic book shop which is where I got mine. This book is FANTASTIC!!! Definitely one of the best fantasy art books out there. Great colors, excellent depictions of Dawn - the fiery redhead with one eye showing *grins* and some of the most imaginative and creative art pieces you'll ever see!
Even the backgrounds are incredibly detailed, with everything from dragons to architecture to detailed walls and textures. He really sets the mood in every piece he does.
Excellent work of art. Absolutely excellent.
Joe breathes life into his art.......2003-10-18
The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner is essential to any JML collector, but also an awesome item for anyone who appreciates the beauty of art. The softcover edition of this collection makes it affordable to the big fans with small bank accounts. Looking through the eyes of Joe, one will see a woman as a work of art or poetry and not a piece of meat. The colors are vibrant, the details are lucid, and the annotations throughout truly give insight into the mind of the artist, who he is, how he feels, and what inspires him.
Edited by JML and Eva Hopkins, with special thanks to Zeke Feldhaus, The Art of Joseph Michael Linsner is cleverly divided into sections. It begins with a nice introduction by Richard Kane Ferguson, then proceeds to a fabulous story by JML about the first artbook he bought which reveals how his taste for art began when he was just a boy. After that, we see exquisite images of Dawn, Death, and Dark Ivory along with many others (women, men, and vampires, oh my!) throughout the Love, Hate, Heaven and Hell sections. Then we move on to About the Art, comments by JML (about art, of course) which include images from the creation of the Dawn: Three Tiers #1 cover from its birth/sketch stage to the gorgeous finished painting. And of course, no collection of art would be complete without an About the Artist segment (with pictures). But wait, that's not all, there is also a two-page spread with photographs of Dawn Lookalikes from DragonCon, some Dawn collectors items, and a few other odd and end pictures. This definitely adds a personal touch to the entire thing. Well, if you've read this far, you must be interested, so what are waiting for? Get your copy today.

More that just a detailed, beautiful look into one of America's leading illustrators, this is an insightful prose into the mind of that artist. Here is the successor of the great artists of the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Done in a style that is very today, and very much his own.
An amazingly well produced book, with quality throughout. From the paper, the binding, to the wonderful reproductions, everything is top notch. This is an art book you would expect to pay two to three times more for.
I feel this is a chance to glimpse into tomorrows major gallery artist, before he explodes on the scene. Live a little dangerously and venture into some unknown areas. ENJOY!

This book is a great addition to any Joseph Michael Linsner's works. Wether you are a long time fan from back to the Cry for Dawn days, or more recently Return of the Goddesss this is the book to get!!!!!
