Book Description
First published in 1903, The Call of the Wild is regarded as Jack London's masterpiece. Based on London's experiences as a gold prospector in the Canadian wilderness and his ideas about nature and the struggle for existence, The Call of the Wild is a tale about unbreakable spirit and the fight for survival in the frozen Alaskan Klondike.
Customer Reviews:
Classic book for kids.......2007-10-06
The story of the dog named Buck who is stolen from his owner's estate, sold into dog slavery as a sled dog in Alaska, and ultimately returns to his wild roots by joining a wolf pack. This is a classic tale that will appeal to boys of every age and a few dog loving girls. When you get tired of Harry Potter, pick this up. You won't regret it, then checkout White Fang which is also by Jack London.
If You Like Animals This Is The Book For You.......2007-03-06
This book is about a dog named Buck. He travels around the world with different musher's all trying to get to a gold mine on a land. Which people never come back once they go. This book is very good because they didn't talk during most of the book.
This book explained what happened when they were mushing and how they felt when they didn't get their way when they were done mushing. For me there wasn't enough action going around in the story. There were only certain parts in the story that were interesting. Like when Buck killed Indians because they killed his owner.
Another time was when Buck and a sleigh dog were forced to fight. Then in parts of the book I didn't understand some of the words. To me the author explained everything good enough to understand. This would be a good book for any body.
super duper.......2006-12-22
This book was mind envigorting and scintytilating. I enjoyed it much and I would would suggest this book for people who like nature and are looking for a good read. It was super duper.
call of the wild.......2006-12-22
Jack London has a very sophisticated style of writing. But the book is relatively predictable. the plot pulls you in and the book is hard to put down. Some of my favorites scenes are when Buck goes back to his primal instincts and sees the ape-man by the fire. The only negative feedback i have on this book is that Jack London is sort of racist agains Indians, the Yeehats are portrayed as the bad indians that killed everyone and then danced. But overall all i have is praise for the call of the wild.
A Great, Non-Stop Action Book!.......2006-12-15
In this book, The Call of the Wild, there is non-stop action keeping the reader always want to continue. This book is filled with action, adventure, terror, and drama. It is taken place in 1903 in the state of California and in Alaska in the region of Klondike. Jack London puts you in the mind of a dog which makes this book different and more unique than many others. This dog is the main character and his name is Buck. He is half St. Bernard and half Scottish sheperd. In the beginning of the book, Buck lives with a judge and his children in his California home. Buck is a good-natured dog who loves to be around people. One day, Buck is kidnapped and shipped to Alaska where he is trained as a sled dog. He has two masters who he has faith in. Their names are Francois and Perrault. They are both French Canadians and know the land very well but, Buck realizes the many troubles in the Alaska and meets his main enemy, Spitz. Spitz is a vicious and brute tempered dog. Buck first despises Spitz when he and a pack of wolves killed a well-mannered dog, but is weak so Spitz decided to kill him. Buck never forgets the gruesome moments of this. In the middle of the book, Francois and Perrault disappear and Buck has two new leaders of the slay. They are Hal and Charles. Another member of there crew is Mercedes who's is Charles wife and Hal's sister. Buck has absolutely no faith in them by their actions. Buck grows hungry and looses his temper. Buck and Spitz have a malicious dogfight. How will fight for the rest of their life? This book is one of the best books I have read because of how well Jack London puts you in the head of a dog and puts you through a torturous time. Read The Call of the Wild by Jack London.

Book Description
The illustrations for this series were created by Scott McKowen, who, with his wife Christina Poddubiuk, operates Punch & Judy Inc., a company specializing in design and illustration for theater and performing arts. Their projects often involve research into the visual aspects of historical settings and characters. Christina is a theater set and costume designer and contributed advice on the period clothing for the illustrations.
Scott created these drawings in scratchboard an engraving medium which evokes the look of popular art from the period of these stories. Scratchboard is an illustration board with a specifically prepared surface of hard white chalk. A thin layer of black ink is rolled over the surface, and lines are drawn by hand with a sharp knife by scraping through the ink layer to expose the white surface underneath. The finished drawings are then scanned and the color is added digitally.
Two of Jack London’s best-loved masterpieces, in their entirety. Call of the Wild tells a compelling tale of adventure during the Yukon Gold Rush, and fully captures the unquenchable spirit of Buck, a kidnapped dog trying to survive in the harshest of environments. Also set in Alaska, the powerful White Fang follows the often savage life of the magnificent title character, a mix of wolf and dog.

Call of the Wild Revisited.......2006-08-30
Picked up this book while in Alaska and throughly enjoyed it....as with most men, had read it or heard of it as a boy, but put it aside or didn't remember it...Surprisingly good, especially while in Alaska, but one doesn't have to be in Alaska to appreciate and enjoy this book. Yes, it's about a dog, but it's also about life, relationshships, and attitudes. Good book well worth reading. LIke most classics, we tend to appreciate them more as we grow older than when we first read them. Thus it is with this book.
Call Of The Wild Review.......2005-03-15
This is a compelling tale of a dog named Buck taken from his home and used to find gold. Sometimes there could be a funny moment but most of the time you can see the cruel abuse people give to dogs and other animals. Buck is a true survivor and he makes it through that perilous journey. You should read this book and you will be at the edge of your seat all through it. A lot of deaths happen in this story so if you really do not like animal abuse I wouldn't recommend it to you. I can't tell you the whole story because I don't want to give you away one detail that might spoil the end or any other good things that happen. Read it and you'll find out how a dog named Buck survived!
The Gory Truth of Call of the Wild.......2004-02-26
I highly recrecommend Call of the Wild to Sick minded people who do nothing but sit around all day playing bloody gore war games rated M. There is a bloody graphic death every chapter! YAY! OH! And who could forget the gory fight scences? Eptic blood battles with the moral being winners kill and loosers show mercy! What an important life lesson! And the PAIN!! How can life go on without PAIN? Broken bones, body slashes, club beatings, and, best of all, freezing to death!!! Ah, What a life! In conclusion, I prefer MY games rated E for everyone.
White Fang.......2004-01-24
This book was a very good book. I would suggest to those of you who like books about Nature. The book is about a young wolf who is beaten several different times and it is because of his heritage that he survives. I don't want to ruin the ending for you but the book is a complete 180 degree turn from the movie. The ending is totally different than the movie. White Fang has many learning experiences that help him get to where he was. Once again I just want to say that it is a great book and i want to suggest to people who enjoy books about nature.
wilderness.......2003-04-24
both of these books are good. both have an animal as a main star. L has a way of describing how you adjust to the wild and how it influence you. you simply have to adjust to survive. in Call of the wild, the wilderness really grow on you. in White fang the real wilderness seem to be something inside creatures, breaking down the barrier between creature and nature (sort of).
Customer Reviews:
Buck realizes his potential.......2005-06-30
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential.
Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild.
This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild.
A rocking book review.......2005-06-09
The Call of the Wild
By: Jack London
A book review
If you like stories about sled dogs driving people to Alaska, then you would probably want to read this book. The people were going to Alaska because they wanted to find gold. Along the way there were challenges and adventures.
First Buck, a St. Bernard-Scotch Shepard, was kidnapped from his cozy home in California and taken to the frozen north in Alaska. When he was in Alaska he became a sled dog. Next, Buck had many battles with different dogs. Buck made himself a lead dog.
I like this book The Call of the Wild because it had many action scenes. The reason why I like the action scenes there were fights and adventures. Another reason I like this book because I learned about many types of dogs. I learned that dogs can pull sleds. I also learned that dogs can have fights. The last thing I liked about the book was that the author wrote captions under the illustrations. I liked that because it tells you what is happening.
In conclusion, I would recommend this book because it is a great action/adventure book about a St. Bernard-Scotch Shepard named Buck. This book is also great because I like dogs and they are my favorite pets. If you enjoy reading about dogs then you will love this book as well.

"The Call of the Wild" book review
A book that influenced my life greatly is "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London. This book is about a lovable husky named Buck who is snatched away from his master and is transported to Alaska where he has to learn to become a sled dog as means of survival. He then experiences a life as a sled dog for a number of different masters, some cruel and some kind. But deep inside he yearns to be free. He finally escapes as he " heeds the call of the wild."
This book was influential to me because it was such a heartbreaking story of how the dog was treated and how he finally overcame it to be wild and free in the end. When I first saw the book I was thinking, ` great, another boring book to sit through', but as soon as I got into reading it I just couldn't put it down(and I know everyone is always saying that they can't put it down but just beat with me here people). After I read it I read it twice more and I always felt kind of sad in the end. What this book taught me about myself is that I really do kind of enjoy reading and books like this one are the kinds you just want to read over and over again.

The Call Of The Wild.......2005-04-12
The Call of the Wild by Jack London; Masterworks: Chicago, 1995.
ISBN# 1-561563706
BY Mike Hendrix
Do you want to hear what Buck goes through? The Call of the Wild is a fiction book by Jack London. The theme in The Call of the Wild is "no one is going to do it for you; you have to do it on your own".
The Call of the Wild is a book about a sled dog, Buck, who was bought, sold, bought again, and then trained and finally sold once more. Buck learns a lot as the book goes on. Some of the things he learns are how to work in a pack and how to eat fast so he can gain energy. Also, Buck learns how to pull over 1000 pounds all by himself.
The Call of the Wild is a captivating book about a dog, Buck, learning to survive in the wild. Buck survives by learning to do everything himself. When Buck is in the wild he has to be strong to survive. My favorite quote from the book is when Francisco says "Dat Buck two devil, I know for sure one day he get mad enough he chew Spitz up and spit heem on de snow." I liked this quote because it shows how tough Buck is.
Jack London was from San Francisco, California. He started writing when he was 21 years old. I can connect to this book in many ways, mainly because I have two dogs. They show similar traits to Buck. For instance, my dogs fight over territory and bones.
I would recommend this book to any one who likes dogs and also to people who like adventures. I recommend The Call of the Wild because it is an adventurous book about dogs.
Call of the Wild.......2005-03-16
The name of the book I read was The Call of the Wild. The call of the wild is in first person.
Jack London used many writing styles. Jack London used large words.
The characters used slang and dialect. The author's word choice does affect the reader. Jack London does not write dialogue convincingly. I think the author chose his words carefully.
The theme of one of the books comes from a wolf that lives in the woods. The wolf goes through many obstacles. In my life I went through many obstacles I feel a personnel connection. This author is well known for writing. I would recommend this book to 9th graders. I don't think this book is for 8th graders. This book did not have an affect on me. I thought that the book was very adventurous. There was alot of traveling and fighting.

The Call of the Wild
By Cody Dale
It was about a dog named Buck living with his master Judge Miller. He had a good home. But was kid napped by a bad man who sold him to a dog sled team. Buck has to learn to survive the extremely cold weather and the other savage dogs. The leader of the dogs is a mean strong dog. Buck beats the dog in a fight and becomes lead dog. But then he is sold to become a mail carrier he does the best he can. But then he is sold to two bad people who don't know the first thing about taking care of dogs. Then he gets away from them and finds a good master. They become friends. But then his master is killed by savages so Buck meets up with a pack of wolves and finally answers the call wild.
This is a great book because it was a lot of action I would recommend this book to a friend.

He ran the neighborhood and later as head of a wolf pack.......2007-01-29
Bucks life starts out in Santa Clara Valley but he was neither a housedog nor a kennel dog. His father was a Saint Bernard and his mother was a Scotch Shepherd dog. At one point in the book Buck's change is compared to his Scotch Shepherd side sort of fading away. Later his actions mirror and even dominate those of the wolves around him.
The book is about Buck and his transition and response to the wild land he finds and the "wild" that may have always been in him. We are told that the "dominant primordial beast was strong in Buck."
A series of events took him to Alaska where many big dogs with strong muscles found work. His strong attachment and genuine love for his master ends with no master and he seems to have become what had called him all along.
We really do see through Bucks eyes. Even so it isn't just his transformation that we feel but get our own taste of what the "wild" is.
The book is one that you will want to read in one sitting. It is hard to put down. It is a good book for friends who may not really like to read and likewise is a unique experience in a point of view for those that do
