"People step into the [Alaskan] landscape and vanish without a trace," writes wildlife guide Lynn Schooler in this ode to the wild beauty of the Alaskan coast, an unusual friendship, and a mysterious bear with fur the color of "burnished metal." Schooler spent a decade searching for the elusive blue (or glacier) bear with Michio Hoshino, Japan's preeminent wildlife photographer. Hoshino was a gentle genius who would sit still for hours, his face swelling from mosquito bites, for the perfect photograph, and who had the same patience and consideration for a bruised heart like Schooler's. Schooler had lost all ability to trust, scarred first by the scorn of classmates for his twisted body and finally by the brutal murder of the woman he loved. But as a guide--both for wildlife photographers and for readers of this evocative and gracefully composed memoir--Schooler richly reveals the place that sustains him. He makes remarkable connections between whales and the complex workings of old-growth forests, between glaciers dropping 100-foot columns of ice into waiting fjords, and the breathing of the planet. Ultimately, though, it is Hoshino's death by a bear that finally enables Schooler to make peace with humanity and death. A quiet, profound gem. --Lesley Reed

Book Description

With a body twisted by adolescent scoliosis and memories of the brutal death of a woman he loved, Lynn Schooler kept the world at arm's length, drifting through the wilds of Alaska as a commercial fisherman, outdoorsman, and wilderness guide. In 1990 Schooler met Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino and began a profound friendship forged by a love of adventure and cemented by their mutual obsession with finding the elusive glacier bear, an exceedingly rare creature, seldom seen and shrouded in legend. But it was only after Hoshino's tragic death from a bear attack that Schooler succeeded in photographing the animal -- and only then that he Was able to complete his journey and find new meaning in his own life.

Set amid the wild archipelagoes, glittering fjords, and dense primordial forests of Alaska's Glacier Coast, The Blue Bear is an unforgettable book that shines with purity and passion.

4 out of 5 stars Not all that great a bear tale but...........2007-04-02

The theme of this is really the author's life, both past and now as a small boat captain in Alaska's dramatically beautiful south coast. If you are passionate about bear stories this is not that great. Toting the Japanese film crew got old and his own entry into photography was tedious. Taken in total with the cultural history, the sea, forests, wildlife, and glaciers, and the author's own qwest it is worthwhile, but certainly not epic.

5 out of 5 stars A book to consider........2006-11-11

A slightly slow start, but please persevere, as this book has so much to offer. Set in Alaska, with glorious descriptions of this environment provided by Lynn during the search for the elusive blue bear. However, I believe the real story lies in Lynns life experience, his battle for a normal childhood, his relationship with his father, his yearning for true love, the pain of loss, and his almost self imposed exile in this heaven on earth.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2004-12-10

The Blue Bear is a fantastic read! If you are at all interested in Alaska, nature, wildlife or friendship I am certain you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book worth reading........2004-05-14

My only regret is that the book wasn't longer. Every page is full of descriptive prose and fascinating narrative. You will feel like you're there with the author, either on the boat, hiking in the wilderness, or examining the joys and sorrows of friendships gained and lost.
What a well-written book!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant writing reveals love of wilderness.......2004-03-11

Elegiac is the perfect word to describe both the cadence and direction of this book: somber, straightforward, yet filled with joy. We come to know both men -- the author and the late Michio Hoshino -- through dialogue and description that is utterly natural, yet weighted with meaning. Pivotal scenes are described so elegantly that you want to read them again and again to extract every nuance of mood. Small vignettes speak volumes, such as the visit of the two men to a village where hundreds of native women and children died by starvation due to a US government relocation program. Or the choice of the author to pilot the boat away from Hobart because he could not bear the sight of the ravaged hillsides.
The author's lightness of touch is captivating especially because it is paired with such a deep knowledge and love of the flora, fauna and weather of the region. Reading Blue Bear, you become effortlessly acquainted with the Alaskan coast, as though it is indeed home, and come to mourn its slow, relentless destruction. I look forward to Lynn Schooler's next book.

4 out of 5 stars Great training aid.......2007-03-12

We have researched many different potty training aids and this is one character that doesn't use baby talk to help motivate your child and is educational. My daughter talks about being like some of the characters in this book and we have found it to be very useful. The video is a great addition to this as it puts the book in visual form and then adds a couple of other topics like hygiene and going to bed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-07

This is a great book and goes along with the movie. Excellent potty training tools.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Effective Book for Toilet Training.......2004-11-30

Both of my children love seeing the familiar characters from "Bear In The Big Blue House" in book form, but I believe this book works as well for kids who don't watch the show. The gentle way Bear, along with Luna, the Moon, deals with everyone's fears and anxieties on this subject seems to speak to the heart of children's fears about making this transition. This book was a great help in finally training my 3 1/2- year old who had developed a mental block on the entire subject. It gently reassures and addresses exactly the right things. We've seen the toilet training episode several times, and they love it, but the book gives you the option of taking it into the bathroom and reading it while your future toileteer is trying to make the leap from diapers to big kid. I would also read it to them before we started in the morning as well. My kids asked for this book over and over again, and it's still a favorite. Kids will love this book even after they are fully trained. In addition to being a very useful tool, it is highly entertaining. I can't say enough good things about this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2003-04-23

I bought this based on the above reviews but I found it's not that great if you don't watch TV and know these characters. My two year old who was just starting with potty training was very bored with the book. It seems to go on and on. Perhaps it is for older kids than my two year old.

4 out of 5 stars A solid, but not excellent, choice.......2003-01-07

Our son is just beginning the process of toilet training. This book brings forward familiar characters. The pictures are colorful, the word choice is good and the story is good for youngsters. It gets a bit long, but my son stays with it.

I always prefer books that are board pages and not paper so we can let him have the book for his own parousal without supervision. I see this as the only drawback on what is becoming a favorite for my son.

5 out of 5 stars Thank god for Amazon.......2006-08-02

It is impossible to purchase any of the books from the Bear in the Big Blue House in Australia. My son was extremely happy when he opened his package and found the book. He loves lifting the flaps to discover whats underneath them.

4 out of 5 stars Bear wins again!.......2006-02-22

My son is just in LOVE with Bear...and anything to do with him. He is 14 months old and this is the perfect book for him. Lots of little flaps to open and look under, a short story to keep his attention and of course, bright, colorful photos of Bear and his friends! If your child loves Bear, they will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2005-09-16

My nephew's two year old daughter and eleven month old son absolutely love Bear and his friends. This book enchants them as much as the Bear DVDS they have.

4 out of 5 stars very nice.......2004-10-22

Okay, if your child loves Bear in the big blue house, like mine does, you can't go wrong with this book.
It is cute, entertaining and will keep the little bear fan happy for a while.
The colors are bright and the entire book is nice, truly a lot of things to see and to point out and hey you can start telling your own story with items you see in the book. Ask your child questions about the items and what bear or Ojo would do with them.
BUT...the flaps are really small. I had to wear them in for my little girl. They stick to the pages very tightly and are hard to open or see at first. Like everything else. A couple of times used and it all works much better. But for the eager reade/listener it is a bit frustriating at first.

I also find the story a bit short, but hey it is bear.. he rocks and we love him no matter what.

Enjoy it, it is a nice book

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - AND Durable TOO.......2003-04-11

I don't usually do reviews, but this book has survived for 3.5 yrs now which is unusual for the "lift the flap books". I have 16 mo twins and my little girl twin likes these kinds of books but finds them to be the "lift and rip and tear" books. Not so with this book - the flaps have actually survived her curiosity and destructiveness! And of course, we all love Bear, Tutter and his friends. A worthwhile purchase for your kids library.

5 out of 5 stars An Indiana Children's Classic.......2006-09-17

The Bears of Blue River is a book I can heartily recommend parents to buy and read to their children. This book, about the many pioneer outdoors experiences of young Balser in the 1820's, is a great way to introduce youngsters to life in a simpler, yet challenging time. My children are captivated as they hang on every word of Balser's bear hunting exploits in the forests of the then-young State of Indiana. My Mother, who is 91 years of age, purchased the book for my young son, and wrote in the forward "Your Grandpa Wayne liked these stories when he was a boy". Eighty-five years later, his 12 year old and 4 year old grandsons are equally enthusiastic. Don't miss this one for your sons!

5 out of 5 stars Bears of Blue River - Favorite Book.......2006-08-30

In 1953 I started first-grade in southern Indiana. My teacher, Pearl Monroe, read Charles Major's 1900 Bears of Blue River to us. She, also, read it to my father in a one-room school house. It was my favorite book. There was one sad part in the book where Mrs. Monroe always cried. She would have an older student finish the chapter. In about 1980, I read it to my kindergarten age son. I also cried when the Polly died in an explosion that killed the dreaded Fire Bear. About five years ago, in a used book store in Colorado. I read it to my father who was in his 80's. Together we enjoyed the memories it brought back. This year I started teaching fourth-grade at the Odessa Christian School here in Odessa, TX - having just retired after 21 years with the pubilc schools. I just finished reading this marvelous adventure story to my class. They all acclaimed that it was the best book they ever heard read. I highly recommend this book and the sequel, Uncle Tom Andy Bill. Donald Potter

What a great book! My husband enjoyed the book when he was a boy. We shared it with our children. They loved it,too! Great adventures.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2005-02-17

I am an elementary teacher in southern Indiana. I have read the Bears of Blue River to my students almost every year I have taught, which means I have read it to students for over 30 years. The only exception being that the teacher who had the class the previous year, had already read it. My students have always loved it. Many of them would check the book out of the library to read after I had read it to the class. Some of my former students remind me how much they loved that book. It is truly an enjoyable book, not only for kids, but for adults as well.

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing Story of The Bears of Blue River.......2003-12-02

The Bears of Blue River was written by Charles Major a native of Indiana. The story takes place in the early nineteenth century in rural Indiana. Indiana was just a baby state during the time of the story.
The characters of this story are very significant. Balser Brent and his wife moved their family including three children, Little Balser, a younger brother Jim and a one year old sister, to Indiana. The family moved from North Carolina. When they moved to Indiana the family purchased 80 acres of land. The land was located on the east bank of the Big Blue River.
Little Balser is the main character of the book. He was a very brave young man. He was brave because he always had encounters with bears and wildlife. One day Little Balsers mother told him to go fishing and take his fathers gun incase he ran into some bears. As he was on his way back home with the fish he had caught, he ran into a bear. It was standing in front of Balser. Balser fed the bear one of the fish and then Balser shot the bear with his father's gun.
Little Balser had a big dream to own his own gun someday. Balser helped a young couple to escape to be married. The couple wanted to repay Balser, but they didn't know how. So they asked Balser if there was something they could bring him. Balser told them he really wanted his own gun. A few weeks later the couple brought Balser back his very own gun from Indianapolis.
There are many other exciting adventures with Balser. One significant part is when Balser and his father found two cubs in a cave close to Conns Creek. They had killed the momma and papa bears, so Balser took the cubs home to raise. Balser named the cubs Tom and Jerry. This is significant because the statue on the north end of the circle in Shelbyville, Indiana is Balser holding up the two cubs. Every summer Shelbyville holds a celebration "The Bears of Blue River." The celebration consists of a parade and entertainment to remember Shelbyville, Indiana and how it once was in the past

Book Description

"A bluebear has twenty-seven lives. I shall recount thirteen and half of them in this book but keep quiet about the rest..." says the narrator of Walter Moer's epic adventure. "...Mine is a tale of mortal danger and eternal love, of hair's breadth, last minute escapes."

Welcome to the fantastic and wondrous world of Zamonia, populated by all manners of extraodinary characters and created by author and illustrator Walter Moers. It's a land of imaginative lunacy and supreme adventure, wicked satire and epic fantasy, all mixed together, turned on its head, and lavishly illustrated.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great, Even for Adults!.......2007-09-26

Even though this book is marketed towards children, I still found it a great read. The ideas were not cliched or uninteresting, everything Moers thinks up has such a feel of originality. One of the best things about this book was the pictures, it's amazing that he's a self-taught artist.

Overall, a few of the chapters were on the slow side, but most of the book will have you flipping the pages eagerly to find out what happens to Bluebear in his various adventures. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-08-13

This is one of the greatest adventure stories ever. It is a riot and Moers' illustrations had me laughing out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Need some campfire stories? Read this!.......2007-08-07

This beautifully written book is for adults. But I found I could easily retell the stories to my kids around the campfire. Incredibly inventive and clever.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-07-24

This is a unique and funny book it starts out with a bang and you never will see whats around the corner. Each one of the chapters is in a diffrent part of the made up country from moutins to boats and forests. Each one of the chapters is a diffrent one of his lives. So i would recomand this book.

5 out of 5 stars Night is knowledge!.......2007-05-24

If Norman Juster had written "The Hobbit," it might have turned out something like "The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear."

It's also the best description of Walter Moers' debut novel, which is probably the best children's book ever written for adults. Set on the mythical continent of Zamonia, Moers sketches out hundreds of strange creatures and surreal adventures, all written in wryly colourful prose.

Bluebear was found floating in a walnut shell, raised by peg-legged hook-handed Minipirates, taught by the talking waves, and kept as entertainment by gruesome hobgoblins. But when he ends up on a giant carnivorous island disguised as a gourmet's paradise, Bluebear is rescued by Deus X. Machina, a Reptilian Rescuer who later brings him to the Nocturnal Academy, run by the seven-brained Professor Abdullah Nightingale.

But when he reaches the end of his education, Nightingale sends Bluebear onto a strange series of adventures -- he falls into a Dimensional Hiatus, is almost eaten by the Spiderwitch, travels through a Bollogg brain, gets swept up in an aging tornado, chases mirages with the Muggs, and finally becomes a Congladiator (lying/storytelling competitor) in Atlantis. But after a match gone bad, Bluebear must flee Atlantis -- and is abducted by the Moloch, a monstrous ship run by the most insidious substance in Zamonia...

Walter Moers should get some kind of award for cramming as many fantastical, bizarre creatures into one book -- carpet dimensions, tiny cyclops, hairy imps, metallic rock-eaters, killer sugar-skeletons, antlered dogs, and headless giants all turn up, and that's only the start. It's a good thing Bluebear gets an encyclopedia in his brain (from Nightingale), or else we would never keep them all straight.

And Moers brings this to life with writing that is straight-faced, detailed, colourful, but still slightly arch ("It should be explained that in the 2364th Dimension music is played on instruments made of milk"), and full of bustling cities and sandy deserts. There's even a city that flies to another planet. But the whimsical plot pulls itself together in his last few-and-a-half lives, where hints and subplots from his previous lives come together -- and we finally find out Bluebear's destiny.

Bluebear himself is a likable guy, as well as very adaptable -- and somehow no matter what bizarre things he does, he's always just as likable. The supporting characters are wildly numerous, but a few stand out -- Fredda, the Alpine Imp who writes bad poetry, a gelatinous prince 2364th Dimension, the grumpy Mac, and the gloriously eccentric Professor Nightingale.

Except for its length, you'd think "The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear" was a kids' book, with its whimsical drawings and colorfully imaginative little world. But it's full of humor, solid writing and bizarre twists -- definitely a good read.

Book Description

With a body twisted by adolescent scoliosis and memories of the brutal death of a woman he loved, Lynn Schooler kept the world at arm's length, drifting through the wilds of Alaska as a commercial fisherman, outdoorsman, and wilderness guide. In 1990, Schooler met Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino, and began a profound friendship cemented by a shared love of adventure and a passionate quest to find the elusive glacier bear, an exceedingly rare creature, seldom seen and shrouded in legend. But only after Hoshino's tragic death from a bear attack does Schooler succeed in photographing the animal -- completing a remarkable journey that ultimately brings new meaning to his life.

The Blue Bear is an unforgettable book. Set amid the wild archipelagoes, deep glittering fjords, and dense primordial forests of Alaska's Glacier Coast, it is rich with the lyric sensibility and stunning prose of such nature classics as Barry Lopez's Arctic Dreams and Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED this book!!.......2007-06-29

This book was probably the best book I have read in a long long time. It takes a LOT for me to say "I couldn't put it down" but I COULDN'T!!! It was written so well and so compellingly interesting, it was over before I knew it, and I wanted more. I do hope that Lynn Schooler writes again about ANYTHING ALASKA. A terrific find.

4 out of 5 stars Friendship & Tragedy.......2007-04-17

I have been reading a lot of non-fiction Northern Frontier/Alaskan books and this was one of the better ones. A great read about a new friendship developing over something that was so rare and elusive. And yet such a sad and tragic end... Highly recommended. It's more about friendship than just that blue bear...

5 out of 5 stars A Warm but Tragic Story.......2007-03-06

"The Blue Bear" by Lynn Schooler is a story of friends, of nature in all its raw and open forms, and of the possibilities of healing. The subject of this book -- just as photographer Michio Hoshino is quoted as saying about a Japanese documentary on him -- is actually Alaska itself. I enjoyed reading of the various journeys, both emotional and physical, that the author makes in his life, with the splendor of Alaska always providing a visual backdrop to the twists and turns in the plot.

It was good that the author chose a more humble approach to his narrative as opposed to, for example, arrogantly listing all his conquests of the natural world, as we see in much of nature-related writings these days.

I have to say, though, that after getting to know Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino better through the pages of this book, it was a bit difficult getting through the chapter in which he is literally taken away us. Of course, here in Japan, Hoshino is still considered something of a legend and his work lives on. Still, it was nice to be able to go behind the legend of a great photographer and human being, through such a gifted storyteller as author Schooler. A warm but tragic story that will leave you feeling much fuller inside than before.

5 out of 5 stars "Michio, where the hell are you,now that we've finally found the bear.".......2005-08-21

I had this book recommended to me by a friend who has a deep interest in bears ,has travelled widely and seen and watched many up close in their natural habitat;including in Alaska. She has shown me photos of standing only a few feet from wild Grizzly bears.I could hardly believe it, when she told me how approachable they were for experts and the pictures convinced me.Not to say, that I wouldn't keep my distance and give them utmost respect. When she told me this was an excellent book, and that I would enjoy it,I knew I was in for a great read.In other words, since it impressed her so much,it was sure to be good.
I read a lot of "Nature" books and spend an awful lot of time outdoors birding and am very familiar with the enjoyment and spirituality one gets from that wonderous combination of people, animals, landscape, sounds and silence, weather and atmosphere, and all that is encompassed when one partakes in a relationship with nature.
The excitement one gets when finding something new or just observing something seen before, is undescribable; but Schooler does as good a job of it as any nature writer that I have come across. He writes from the soul and great love he gets from living.Yes,this book is about the Blue Bear,Alaska and his friend and soulmate Michio, along with many other things, but what he really is writing about is the great enjoyment life is if one really learns to appreciate it.From this book you should learn that it is not only in Alaska that such enjoyment can be found. It is in the desert looking at sunsets, cactii and Roadrunners,in the forest searching out a Barred Owl,on the ocean watching a Tropicbird, sitting at a campsite when a Moose appears,or watching and trying to identify up to 20 different species of Gulls around Niagara Falls in the winter when it is wet windy and bitterly cold;or any of the millions of things the Creator has provided.
I'd like to quote a few things that demonstrate the excellence of the author's writing skills:
"Everything always gets what it needs."
"Home is not always a door at the end of a sidewalk.
Sometimes it is a broader place that holds the shape of the
sky,the water we drink, and the food that becomes the minerals
of our bones,Sometimes it is the sum of our experiences and
memories, and sometimes it is wherever we happen to be-if
we are with the right companion."
"As a photographer,,"Michio taught me how to 'look' with
my eyes-- but as a friend, how to 'see' with my heart."
An excellent read for anyone who enjoys life, and a great eyeopener for anyone who thinks life is boring.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome writing.......2005-01-07

An amazing story coupled with great writing makes for a great read. I've traveled to Alaska and the Pacific Northwest three times and have never read a book that does a better job of summing up the power and beauty of the region. Lynn Schooler adds such personal touches that I feel I was there with him and Michio. His feelings about nature, glaciers, and the grand scheme of life and death remind me of the book 'Freedom is the Highest Good' by Tim Hammell

"Bear Loves Bedtime!" is a short but sweet "Bear in the Big Blue House" board-book that's all about bedtime. It features full-page pictures and a sentence-a-page in which Bear talks about what he and the kids in the Big Blue House love about bedtime. That includes taking a bath, teeth-brushing and putting on pajamas.

This simple, soft board-book is targeted towards younger fans of the series, but any fan will probably enjoy it.

Book Description

The Easter egg hunt at the Big Blue House has begun! Ojo, Tutter, Pip, and Pop fill their baskets with beautiful eggs, but poor Treelo can't find any at all. Readers can lift the flaps to help Treelo find a very special egg -- and a wonderful Easter surprise!

4 out of 5 stars Easter in Woodland Valley.......2006-12-04

It's Easter-time for Bear and his friends in the Big Blue House. What better way to celebrate than with a fun egg hunt? The kids first help Bear to decorate the eggs. Then, Bear hides them all over to hunt down. Things don't seem to be so fun for Treelo, though --- he can't find any eggs.

More fun with our friends from "Bear." This is one of the more recent "Bear," books, one of the last few published before the book releases all but went dark. If you or your kids enjoy the program, don't pass this one by.

3 out of 5 stars Indestructable.......2005-11-25

We bought this book simply because our teething son was eating through all the board books we had. This book cover has a soft, laminated sort of cover that our son could chew on and not destroy. As for learning his letters...the book only goes through about 5 +/- letters in the alphabet, so it is pretty pointless.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing "scratch & Sniff".......2001-07-28

Don't bother buying this book if you are looking for a scratch & sniff book. The smells are so faint, they are almost non-existent. Additionally, the "scratch & sniff" area is very, very small, and difficult for toddler to find, let alone scratch. Very, very disappointed. Story was poorly written also. If you want scratch and sniff books, stick to the DK line (ie, "scratch and sniff party", etc..)

5 out of 5 stars Smells like a good book!.......2000-03-28

We were thrilled when we found a copy of What's that Smell? for our daughter for Christmas.

Bear's famous line "What's that smell?" is very popular around our house so this book was a quick hit. The lift up flaps entertain our toddler and she loves to sniff her book.

Her very favorite part is the last flap, under it is a small mirror and she laughs out loud every time she lifts it and sees herself.

I am sure What's that Smell will be a big hit in your house too!
