Why do some people remain alert and vigorous at an age when others are declining mentally and physically? Does their apparent advantage have a biological basis, and, if so, could this success be transferred to others predisposed to age more quickly? If this is achievable, does brain aging then become the last obstacle to an extension of our useful life span?

These are just some of the questions answered in this fascinating book by Lawrence Whalley, a researcher who specializes in the study of Alzheimer's disease. He relates that the brain may be able to compensate for its own aging since the loss of brain cells with age is not as extensive as once believed and that, if some surviving cells retain the capacity to replicate, there may be real prospects of reducing the worst effects of brain aging.

In surveying the prospects of slowing or even preventing the worst effects of aging, Whalley looks at the development of the brain and how this is influenced by environmental factors such as diet and stress, the biological and psychological mechanisms of brain injury and disease, and the range of possible treatments and preventative measures, including gene therapy, silicon-neuron implants, virtual reality, and "intelligent environments." Throughout the book he relates the known facts about brain aging, as well as our many preconceptions. Reexamining older scientific studies, the author is able to show that though much of what we take for granted about the mental processes of the older person is not simple, we may indeed be able to alleviate the effects of mental deterioration--if not now, then in the future.

This book is a companion to the atlas of the adult rat brain (Brain Maps: Structure of the Rat Brain, Elsevier, 1992), using a consistent approach to nomenclature and graphical representation.

The two goals of the approach used for the book, are to clarify the basic structural plan of the mammalian brain, and to generate computer graphics maps for summarizing related information, using the rat as a particular model. Included is also a discussion of how similar the development of rat and mouse brains may be, and thus how useful the maps may be as a guide to mouse brain development.

The heart of the book is, of course, the atlases of the brain at progressive stages of embryogenesis. Nine representative ages are used, from the simple neural plate stage, to a time just before birth. At each stage, enough levels are presented to illustrate the major known structural features, with additional supporting planes and photomicrographs.

The second component of the book discusses the classical approach to interpreting the gross structure of the developing brain, while a third component is more theoretical, and deals with methods to produce flattened maps or footprints of the central nervous system. Finally problems associated with identifying specific structures in the embryonic brain, and the many inconsistencies found in nomenclature associated with the developing and adult rat brain are presented.

I have been kayaking for about 8 years now and have amassed a small library of kayak books. This (an earlier edition actually) was my first and it has, in my opinion, not been surpassed. I heartily endorse this book for the new kayaker. I still occasionally will pull it off the shelf to get Mr. Washburnes take on some issue. I particularly like his "4 concentric rings of defense" conceptualization for not becoming a kayak fatality. In short: avoid trouble, if this fails, stay upright, if this fails, know how to get back in your boat, if this fails have the equipment at hand to signal for help. Of course, he goes into this in more detail than that. I found the information content of the book to be quite high. It has a good mix of safety content, skills content, equipment content, and information about different types of paddling environments and the types of skills that are particularly important for such environments. Also, he paints a good portrait of the mystique of kayaking. Several other intro sea kayak survey books that I have seen also seem quite adequate, but from personal experience I can certainly reccomend this one.

First to Eleanor--thank you thank you thank you! For giving me a handwriting style that will last centuries yet.

Ahem... Copperplate hand is beautiful, and instead of having to guess how to go about making it right from a one-page sample, you have a kind and considerate teacher walk you through a complete tutorial in a real-world classroom pace--with every intention of actually passing down this beautiful hand--warts and elegance--all--from her years of experience into your fingers. This text will be your guide to teaching future generations this beautiful hand. I am honored to have found this book and even more honored to have the chance to learn this hand from a true master. I hope you will find it, as I did, that her tone is considerate, experienced, and helpful every step of the way--she made _every_ _word_ _count_. She will never bore you.

At this moment I plan to work on this hand whenever I take notes. I have a Namiki/Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen, and although the default nib cannot vary stroke width through pressure--it's a hard nib--I have every intention of enjoying the styling of copperplate in my everyday writings. Like any others who have recently rediscovered the pleasure of writing a journal, I am using a fountain pen or a roller ball on a Moleskine brand notepad. There are many blogs and online write-ups helping you get into this fun activity. Check them out. But I realize I need a cursive hand to work on, otherwise my handwriting would remain illegible! But thanks to Ms. Winters--I am saved!

A beautiful work.......2006-07-23

I have a number of books on Copperplate. This is the most thorough, and produces the best results. Winters sweats the details, both in the letterforms (which all the books cover), but in the fine details of them, details of posture, help in choosing paper and ink (A real issue when trying to learn copperplate -- the right paper can make all the difference).

Absolutely, if you're trying to learn Copperplate, get a copy of Winters and read it. It will make all the difference.

The best Copperplate-hand book to be found out there so far.......2003-09-20

After studying calligraphy through workshops and lessons since 1989, I decided to add Copperplate to my repertoire. I found learning this style requires a whole new "think" on writing: different flexible pen nibs, pen angles, paper slant, stops, bold and hairline strokes, and of course incredible(albeit refined)embellishment. This book holds prime position in my library, is ink-stained and spotted, has pages unbound from overuse, and is the most perfect way to learn this hand as any I have ever seen. Every time I want to use Copperplate on a commission or project, I haul it out to have beside me, to remember all the little specifics that make Copperplate so beautiful. I love this book!

I was looking for a book to explain everything from soup to nuts. This is it. A little history, an equipment guide, and then into the basics. Advanced and commercial techniques are covered also. I highly recommend this book.

Has everything you need to get started. The person who inspired me to get this was highly credentialed in calligraphic art and she was satisfied and approving when I explained to her the contents. i have recently found out about Manuscript Products for calligraphy. They are far more superior then anything you can find in the States. they are made in england and the nibs are of the highest quality while being priced very economically. I was very happy to see they were the manufacture behind readers digest, so i knew before even looking at the book i had a superior product.

And it is superior, anyone who likes calligraphy will love this. it is NOT a truly basic, but anyone who is not familiar will have no problems working on the kit. It is a whole calligraphy set. not just making Prettily letters with a flat nib.

This is a great all-inclusive product. I gave it to my daughter-in-law for Christmas and she was really thrilled. The set came with everything she needed to learn techniques and actually use to create her own beautiful work. Easy and fun!.......2007-09-11

Being completely new to learning the Japanese language, I was very intimidated by having to learn not one, but TWO new "alphabets" (not to mention the kanji). I stumbled across this one in a bookstore, and after flipping through it, decided to try it out. The mnemonic devices in it seemed corny, and I found myself saying "oh, I'll never remember it THAT way"... yet I found myself using those same devices constantly, and they really did work! Lots of space to practice using the characters, and the flash cards included in the back made it very easy to quiz myself on reading them. Working through it daily, section by section, I've picked up the basics in under a week, and have moved onto practicing what I've learned. If you want to learn hiragana, this one makes it simple and fun. I'll definitely be picking up the katakana version as well!
