Book Description
Sea otters are one of the most charismatic marine mammals. Capable of living their entire lives free of contact with land, they eat, sleep, and give birth at sea. Hunted relentlessly for centuries, these appealing creatures were brought back from the brink of extinction in the twentieth century: an achievement that is being championed as one of the great success stories in marine conservation. Glenn VanBlaricom traces the turbulent history of the species and discusses their fascinating behavior. World-class photographers capture the spirit of this most lovable animal.

Illustrated with the author's own photographs, Sea Otter Rescue is a fascinating first-hand account of the heroic measures taken to save the lives of hundreds of sea otters.

Great Book.......2002-04-08
I have to say that this is a great book that shows you the passion an author can have for what he or she is writing about(especially if the author explains his reasoning, feelings, and regrets about his book to you !*personally*!). Not to mention the information it gives you on otters and oils spills. It teaches you how bad it can be for a disaster of this monstrous preportion to occur and why you should do all in your power to stop it. It makes you sit there and wonder what you can do to help your environment!
Sea Otter Rescue.......2000-11-16
I thought "Sea Otter Rescue: The Aftermath of an Oil Spill" was a wonderful book with universal appeal. The photographs taken by the author Roland Smith were heartwarming and sometimes disturbing. "Sea Otter Rescue" is the story of the Exxon Valdez accident in Prince William Sound in Alaska and the superhuman effort to save the lives of the sea otters affected by the oil. The author, Roland Smith, was among the volunteers who rushed to Alaska to try to save these sweet animals. This is his story and the story of the others who took part in this effort. Great humanitarian story.

Marianne Riedman does an excellent job of portraying the playful sea otter in its habitat. She brings us up close and personal with one of the most beloved marine mammals. Through this book, one can discover much about the sea otter's history and behavior. I recomend that all sea otter lovers read it.

Lessons Learned in Baby Sea Otter
by Betty Tatham
Reviewed by RM McCall for The Best Book Bin
Baby Sea Otter is an exquisite non-fiction picture book exploring the life cycle of the Sea Otter. Children love to learn about animals and this book fills that bill. Each page walks you through the life cycle of the Sea Otter. I found myself saying, "Really? I didn't know that." I didn't know that the sea otter had pouches under its arms. Or, that they have the thickest fur of any animal on earth. Or, that the male otter will try to kidnap a baby for food ransom. Parents will enjoy reading this book to their little ones and the beautiful artwork will delight both parent and child. Ms. Tatham has taken real life facts and presented them in an exciting and interesting way. The baby sea otter faces many of the same things a child faces in life. The mother cares for the baby sea otter. She provides shelter and protection, until the baby grows big enough to fend for itself. As the baby grows, the days are filled with fun playing with the other pups and floating on a raft. But the tension builds when an eagle dives from the sky, thinking the baby sea otter would make a tasty evening meal. As the baby grows it ventures off on its own, but it soon realizes there are still things to learn, when it has a close encounter with a shark. At the age of three the young sea otter is ready to mate and the cycle starts all over again. This book is perfect for children 4-8 years old and for adults who enjoy the beauty of a good picture book and relish learning along with their children.

Including where to see them in the wild, Sea Otters is the most charming and complete book on the subject and features wonderful photographs -- as well as an enticing new cover.

Very strong factual depictions.......2001-02-08
I enjoyed this book for its factual & positive content regarding sea otters. If you are a lover of sea otter, Saving Sea Otters is probably a must. It's not fiction. It's not a compelling story per say, in terms of pure storytelling, but I found it very compelling to understand otters and the people who care for them. The photos are excellent. I'm glad I bought it but then again, I am an otter nut.
Saving Sea Otters.......2000-05-21
"Saving Sea Otters" by Elin kelsey is a book dealing mainly with the plight of the southern sea otter and its dwindling population. The cover shows a furry little sea otter wrapped in a kelp bed.The book shows the behind-the-scenes work that researchers, scientists, veterinarians, volunteers and friends of the sea otter do. There are wonderful, clear pictures throughout the book showing the interaction between the sea otters and the people who care for them. Many times the sea otters are hurt, injured or unable to care for themselves and that's when the caretakers step in to nurse them back to health. Most of the book takes place in the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and the waters of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. If one is interested in sea otters, I would definitely recommend this book. Thank you...Don Bieber

Book Description
This delightful story of a Nootka boy, his explorations in nature, and the sea otter who saves his life, is now available in paperback!
In this contemporary tale, Jason discovers the return of the sea otter to his West Coast village. One day, while fishing in his dugout canoe, Jason sees a dark furry head with black eyes and a grey whiskery muzzle bobbing among the weeds. Fascinated, he spends many hours with his canoe tied to the kelp bed, watching the sea otter. One day Jason leans too far over in his canoe and falls into the water. The canoe has come loose from where he tied it and, and a strong current is carrying it away from him. But something prevents the canoe from drifting away.
In an entertaining way, Jason and the Sea Otter teaches children the importance of learning about and being in nature, and the respect that nature's wild creatures deserve. Paul Montpellier's full-colour illustrations have been described as "wonderfully clear and detailed, capturing both closeness to nature and a sense of continuity of native tradition."
Book Description
inda Greenlaw, the New York Times bestselling author of The Lobster Chronicles and The Hungry Ocean, brings us a riveting and uproarious collection of tales of fishing and adventure at sea.
Download Description
In ALL FISHERMEN ARE LIARS, Linda meets up with her best friend and fellow fisherman Alden Leeman for lunch and a drink at the Drydock in Portland just before Christmas. The surly captain of her first fishing expedition, Alden has seen his share of mishaps and adventures while at sea. When Linda shares memories of navigating her ship through one of the worst storms she's ever seen, Alden quickly follows up with his own tale of terror and survival while other fishermen sit on the periphery attentively listening before jumping in with stories of their own. The stories will focus on such things as the most eccentric crew member, the funniest episode, the biggest fish, and the wildest story. The characters will drift in and out with the rounds of drinks with tales of their own dramatic moments, increasing in pitch and decreasing in believeability as alcohol is consumed. ALL FISHERMEN ARE LIARS are brand new stories of adventure, but it's also what readers have come to love and expect from Greenlaw —luminous descriptions and edge-of-the seat excitement.

Swapping tales over a pint and a chowder.......2007-07-27
After two books of no-nonsense stories about life at sea, first as a swordboat captain and next as a lobsterman, Linda Greenlaw kicks back at a Portland, Maine, watering hole with a few fellow salts to swap yarns. And, while the title clearly states that "all fishermen are liars," these brine-encrusted adventures are all purportedly true -- if perhaps a bit stretched. Bracketing the stories themselves are Linda's efforts to convince a dear friend and mentor to consider full or partial retirement or risk a lonely death at sea. The text is also brimming with Linda's thoughtful musings about life, love and family, much of which she weaves into a series of fisherman's metaphors.
Linda's book is populated, as usual, by an assortment of characters, most of whom would be equally fun to meet over a pint and chowder. Foremost among them are Alden, Linda's flawed but faithful friend, and George and Tommy, two ne'er-do-wells who have been thoroughly shredded by Linda to the extent I'm surprised they consented to join the bar crowd for her book jacket photo, much less be identified by name. But the meat of "Liars" is the collection of sea stories, some harrowing, some funny, some sad, some inspiring. Linda Greenlaw has a gift for bringing her narrative to life.

Not bad but not in the same league as "The Hungry Ocean".......2007-05-12
Linda appears to be running short of material in this book.
Some good stories.......2006-03-22
This is a fun book for those of who like to sit around and swap sea and fish stories. It has a lot of interest and a very "easy read". Linda also gives you a feel for the "community of North Atlatnic fishermen" that participate in this often very unforgiving and dangerous profession. This book is clearly the best of her books that I have read.
Marine science, diving adventure, boat regulations and management and more blend with riveting adventure tales.......2005-11-04
If it's a salty yarn you hunger for, you can't go wrong with swordfishing boat captain Linda Greenlaw's latest adventure All Fishermen Are Liars: True Adventures At Sea. Her sea stories are true and involve both death-defying and some funny challenges of professional sailors - from surviving a shipwreck by swimming 10 hours in a hurricane to using rock music as a tuna lure. Marine science, diving adventure, boat regulations and management and more blend with riveting adventure tales.
A Readable Introduction to an Unfamiliar World.......2005-03-20
In her latest book author and fisherman Linda Greenlaw introduces readers to the salty denizens of the Dry Dock Bar in Portland, Maine. Greenlaw's lunch date there with her mentor and friend of 25 years, Alden Leeman, provides the framework for the series of stories she shares with readers--the very stories, or so the author alleges (though the book's title may give one pause)--that she and Alden and hangers on at their table swapped that day at the Dry Dock over a very extended luncheon.
The stories Greenlaw includes in the book are a mixed bunch--rough seas and unlikely survivals, noisome deck hands and shiv-wielding mates, a refrigerated dead guy. Many of the stories are stirring; the rest are at least good reads. Greenlaw writes nicely, and her characterization of her friend Alden--for whom her affection is palpable--is well done: "I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and waited for Alden to think about what he might like to drink. I knew that he would eventually order a rum and Coke, but he did not know this. He never did."
It is not necessary to know anything whatever about fishing or sailing to enjoy All Fishermen are Liars. Nautical types will surely want to view their world through Greenlaw's lens, but landlubbers like myself will appreciate the author's readable introduction to an unfamiliar world. She and her gang of mendacious fishing buddies make for good company for the book's duration.

Customer Reviews:
Older even than the date implies.......2005-06-12
This book has some excellent information, but it also has whole chunks that are completely out of date and were probably out of date when the 1997 second editions was pubished.
To begin with the kind of "computer consultant" that the book is primarily focused on is the contract mainframe programmer. Even in 1997 that was not the dominant form of consulting, as she suggests it is. Also take into account that one of her favorite resources to recommend is CompuServe. For those of you under 35, that was the thing that AOL put out of business by being easier to use (though not better.)
In fact most of the information in the book is gathered from CompuServe and it's members. Ruhl actually bemoans this new upstart "the internet" because it isn't as good as the bulletin boards people are used to, since it's all static pages, after all.
Not that there aren't great pieces of information in here. It would just be nice to do a soft cover third edition that's about a third less pages. Just include the "timeless" stuff about dealing with clients and not the stuff about how you could earn as much as $35K as a consultant.
I enjoyed the book, and it's extremely well written, but the fact that it's so out of date and sold only in a $20 hard cover edition left a bad taste in my mouth.
A must read for a computer consultant.......2003-11-05
I bought this book in 1998 before I started consulting. Thanks to this book, I avoided the traps of bad contracts from middle agency without having to experience it myself. A few of my colleagues that were 'inspired' by the possibility of having good contract that I had, also managed to negotiate better subsequent contracts.
Okay, but she has a better one out........2003-04-25
This book is good for a general understanting of the consulting field. And I do recommend it, but if you are serious about consulting/contracting, you should supplement with two other books: "Janet Ruhl's Answers for Computer Contractors: How to Get the Highest Rates and the Fairest Deals from Consulting Firms, Agencies, and Clients" and if you are just starting in the programming field and want to learn exactly what you need to do and do it fast, then read: "The Secret Path to Contract Programming Riches..." Good luck to your career! ;)
Great introduction to consulting........2003-03-26
This book provides a thorough overview of the computer consulting industry and a good sense of the day-to-day business tasks associated with maintaining a consulting career.
If you are an absolute rookie in the computer field and have little idea of the consulting options available to you, your perspective may widen a bit and you might find yourself having more questions than you did before you started reading this book, which is a good thing. So, you will probably want to supplement your research a bit more once you have narrowed down your consulting career choices.
But, if you are already in the computer field, this book has about all the information you will need to base a career-changing decision on. There are plenty of resources listed to help further your knowledge on the consulting field. If you have the time, you might want to take a look at the author's subsequent book, "Janet Ruhl's Answers for Computer Contractors", which can be a very good supplement to this book.
~ Michael Nigohosian, author - "The Secret Path to Contract Programming Riches"
Truly A Mixed Bag.......2001-08-18
This book certainly has its pluses and minuses. The fact that it was published in 1997 makes it somewhat obsolete in some critical areas. None the less there is some solid advice given by the author.
The first chapter defiens the many types of consultants fairly well. However, it does fail to mention much about the Networking Engineer, whcih is a critical part of today's busienss environment. The Meet The Consultants section is fairly user friendly. Earning potential is key but again you must interpret this in terms of 1997 dollars which is more inflated now.
Also critical discussions regarding health insurance and marketing are explored here. Some good advice is given here at the beginning. A little bit overdone in other spots as a person exploring the industry will become overwhelmed. So many of these aspects are situational. The brokering part is presented in such a dry format that its hard to read after 30-40 pages.
The glossary might be of help for those who want to explore more information. However, a new version is definitely in order to bring this book current.

Customer Reviews:
This book is GREAT!.......2004-10-29
This book is wonderful! Like all the other let's draw manga books, "All About Fighting" covers everything within its topic and much more. This book has every fighting style from fistfights to virtual reality battles. My favorite part of this book is the character design part, which shows tricks to designing characters, and also shows different kinds of characters and their traits.
Some things included in this book are, costumes and uniforms involved in fighting, various poses involved in different fighting styles, a mini weapons encyclopedia, and short mangas (comics) with almost every fighting style to help interpret the use(s) of the style. Overall, "Let's Draw Manga: All About Fighting" is an excellent source of reference and inspiration.
I think this book is a must buy for artists who want to pursue a job in manga making or if you just want to learn to draw a totally awesome fight scene. It substitutes having to take lessons from a teacher (even though I highly doubt you'll find one), and when it comes to what you can to do with this book, the possibilities are practically limitless! I would recommend this book to anyone who would be willing to listen.
A Valuable Information Resource!.......2004-10-23
This is an excellent book that has a wealth of detail, drawings, and information related to various kinds of combat in manga. There are sections on unarmed combat, armed combat, uniforms and costume design (as it relates to combat), supernatural (ala DBZ) combat, monster combat, robot combat, and even animal combat!
There are a number of short 2-6 page manga that illustrate various points, and are decent examples of composition. Where this book really shines, though, is in the "Weaponless Fighting" and "Weapon Fighting" sections. There are a wide variety of techniques from various styles of fighting presented, and each section also includes a brief guide to designing characters for action manga.
The book's only shortcoming is that it rarely shows more than one or two views of a particular attack type, but given the scope of the book, that's understandable.
I highly recommend that beginning to advanced artists interested in the manga style acquire this book. For beginners it gives good information on techniques and tricks, and for advanced artists it provides a wealth of reference material.
