Lavish and informative.......1999-06-11
"Canada: The Land and Its People" is a lavish and informative volume.
Pierre Berton examines Canda's past through the stories of twenty-five diverse historical characters.
Berton also presents the country's vast and often stunning geography through the lenses of over thirty Canadian photographers.
Just a few of the excellent pictures/stories include a modern diesel-powered train making its way through a Rocky Mountain stretch of track that was first envisioned by 19th-century railway pathfinder, Walter Mosberly; the East Block of the Parliament Buildings, where Prime Minister John A. MacDonald (a "likeable rogue") had his office in the 1870s; and the rustic though beautiful Yukon cabin of poet Robert Service.
There are over 125 color and b/w photos and illustrations in this mammoth work.

The author's unrivaled experience in long-distance cruising has commanded an enormous following of dedicated readers and his sensible, practical approach to sound seamanship has great appeal to those wishing to learn and improve the art of safe cruising.
Cruising Under Sail combines Hiscock's classic books, Cruising Under Sail and Voyaging Under Sail. The sailor's companion........2004-03-01
Hiscock's classic text on long distance cruising has been the bible of long distance sailors for two or three generations now. What it lacks in the latest gadgets it makes up for with decades of experience and knowledge of the subject. The safety at sea section alone is worth the price. Chapters include ropes and rope work, masts and sails (cruising sails, not racing sails), accommodations and living on board, passages and navigation. Unless you already have a decade of long distance sailing behind you this is a valuable book.
the original bible of cruising.......1999-10-01
This book still is valuable for sailors. The technical information is dated, but the prudent, workmanlike approach to the whole business of sailing around the world is timeless. The ocean hasn't changed much in 30 years.
If you want one book on cruising, this is it.......1998-07-08
While some of the information is a bit dated (no GPS, for instance)there is good, solid, readable stuff here, everything from sleeping bags to celestial navigation, recipes to emergency repairs. Hiscock had real hands on, been there experience, circumnavigating (with his wife Susan) several times.
Far too many cruising books are of the "Oh, cut loose and have fun" type which can be more than a little dangerous. Collections of carefree cruising stories and anecdotes. Cruising Under Sail something else, serious, proven stuff that Hiscock has collected from among the most successful cruising sailors.
The best book ever on cruising.......1998-01-04
This book is particularly suited to the owner of a cruising yacht .The range of information within the pages is complete i.e. ; if you knew what was contained in this book you would know a lot about sailing and cruising. It covers topics such as :Hull , Rig & Rigging,Sails, Seamanship and Navigation etc. I have an origional First edition(1950),and I read it on a regular basis and I still consider it my favourite book on sailing. The plates and illustrations are beautiful.
Book Description
Modern Cruising Under Sail is a book for today's cruisers, people who like to think for themselves and eschew one-size-fits-all solutions in favor of making their own decisions. Following in the wake of his highly acclaimed Modern Seamanship, Don Dodds provides all the knowledge you'll need to become a successful cruiser, including:
-Selecting and equipping the boat
-Basic sailing techniques
-Using equipment and reading charts
-Managing finances
-The importance of good planning
-And more!

Focussed and authoritative.......2007-09-28
There are probably many sailing people out there who will have a hard time with this book. There are many "beliefs" in sailing that owe their rigidity to a combination of the sailor's legendary stubornness and the wish that follows from it to believe what seems obvious to the eye. Dodds takes apart many of these misconceptions -- about boat design, motivations for cruising, attitudes towards safety and the environment -- and puts forward alternative views that are based as much on a dispassionate observation of his fellow cruisers as on a good technical understanding of how a boat actually responds to the physical forces of water and wind.
Two of the biggest "undeniable truths" about boat design that Dodds deals with, for example, are the belief that heavy displacement hulls are always more stable than lighter hulls, and that full keels will track better that fin keels and so make a "better" boat as a result. Dodds methodically dispels these and other misconceptions that have built up over decades of traditional and wishful thinking. Some people may think he is "too technical" or "full of himself", but this would not be a fair and patient assessment. Most of the time I think he gets the physics just right and presents just enough of it to make solid points about what actually happens on the water. There will always be those who want to argue that their pet belief is sacred but this book is intended to be read with an open mind, not to mention with at least a basic understanding of statics and dynamics.
Dodds backs up much of his analysis not only with adequate references but also with a great deal of experience of cruising and a sharp eye for what is really going on in the physical world. He seems to know his fellow sailors very well and sees where they all too quickly delude themselves into thinking what they want to rather than what reality is spelling out.
This book touches on every conceivable aspect of cruising, from the reasons to go, to how to pay for a boat and trip, to how to choose a boat, what hull, rig, and stove might be the best, and what might happen to you out on the water if you are not prepared both mentally and physically. Some of his warnings are sobering, as they probably should be given the investment of time, money, and personal invovlement that cruising can require.
He takes into consideration all popular options in every area of his analysis and gives his opinion on what might work best for cruising, as opposed to day-sailing or racing. He compares dozens of boats based on well-explained technical specifications, and overall gives such good practical advice that, even if you disagree with him on his technical conclusions for whatever reasons, you will feel more that adequately informed about what cruising is really like and how you can make it safer and more enjoyable.
One of my favourite parts are the chapters on the Galley and Interior Space, where he discusses the merits of various stove fuel and the benefits of solar-powered refrigeration, as well as how best to store charts and clothing. This is someone who has obviously had to solve the many day-to-day challenges of living on a boat for years.
This book is highly recommended for -- as they say -- both the beginner and the experienced individual, and in either case one who is open-minded and realistic about the challenges of taking to open water for months or years at a time.
Well worth the money and the time.......2001-08-14
Dodds is pretty opinionated about most things; he always seems to have a strong view (it must be nice never to be uncertain about anything), but he packs a lot into his book. And of course the reader can always make up his/her own mind.
I found the book enjoyable and thought-provoking as Dodds often challenges the "conventional wisdom".
I'm very much in the dreaming and planning stages of going cruising, so still have a lot to learn. When someone gives me a new slant on things, as Dodds has, I appreciate it.
I'd recommend the book to anyone who is interested in extended cruising. You'll read arguments both for and against, and then a range of advice on what and how to do it.
One topic not often covered well in other books is the big questioni of what it costs, which models work best for funding your boat and cruise etc. Dodds doesn't shy away from these areas either.
Overall, a very good read and highly recommended.
Libertarian gives rave review........2001-08-10
I knew I liked this book after reading the first few pages. It is quite different from similar products I've purchased. I found it refreshing, practical, and useful. I smiled a lot while reading it and feel much more comfortable planning my own escape. I feel it is much more honest than the rest. The humor in this book is not just an ambient lament, it conveys the seriousness of the material presented and sends it home in a most refreshing way. It provides the material provided with a staying power that is unique. This book says what few books will. I learned a lot. I'm not a writer- I am a book consumer, and will leave the writing and my money with Don Dodds. Thanks Don, good work.
Informative and Hard Hitting.......1999-03-22
I found the book provide considerable information about cruising that is not found elsewhere. Most books are written by people who glorify the experience of cruising. The author has ignored the old adage, if the truth conflicts with the legend print the legend. This book tells it like it is. Some of what is said will upset the starry eyed skippers with there eyes firmly fixed on the horizon. Some of what is said also conflicts with conventional thinking. Where conflict occurs the points are well supported and offers another side of the issue. I found chapters 2 and 3 very informative. Also the chapters on selecting the boat and rig have considerable information presented in a clear easily understood form. The later chapters are worth the price of the book alone. The author has a relaxed style that works for people who like to read, very similar to his other book "Modern Seamanship." It is not a picture book, but I found the illustrations adequate.
Some instructive material, but short on insight.......1999-01-16
Modern Cruising Under Sail sets out to "realistically present the facts about cruising." Unfortunately, the book comes across as a pedantic exercise by a self-styled sailing scientist that is a lot like a trip to a sushi restaurant - no matter how much you eat, you still come away feeling empty. My main complaint about this book is that it is under illustrated and has only 24, often poorly selected photographs in the book's 384 pages. As a result, the book suffers heavily from its inability to communicate the intended points. Another minor issue is the book's layout which is double-spaced and utilizes a serifed font that I found tiring to read. I got the impression from the spacing that the author was trying to pad the length of this book just as a college student might a term paper.
Much of the early part of the book is wasted on discussions about the scientific method and what constitutes valid conclusions. The book is nicely referenced with respect to other sailing books and publications as well as various conclusions borrowed from other writers. Compared to Steve and Linda Dashew's "World Cruising Encyclopedia" which I feel is the best book available on the subject of cruising, Modern Cruising Under Sail is short on insights and does little to enlighten one about sailing or sailboats.
I did like the discussions about the various ratios that are used to predict boat performance and stability and there were some nice graphs in this section. The section on rigging was somewhat informative as well, but all in all, the book delivered less than it promised.

Customer Reviews:
Great little book.......2007-06-21
This book is written in clear, understandable English and no technical jargon. Where terms need definition or explanation, they're kept simple and concise. Where appropriate, simple examples are given.
If you want to have a better understanding of bonds, the bond market and how the bond market works, this is the book!
Good Introduction to Bonds.......2006-05-14
I found this book an easy read and quite informative for someone who is not well versed in bonds. I had often considered bonds to be a part of my portfolio but I didn't know enough about them to make an intelligent decision. This book helped me decide how best to purchase bonds (mutual funds, closed-end investment companies, individual bonds) and what things to consider. I highly recommend the book for someone thinking about adding bonds to their investment portfolio
Well written and a valuable addition to your library.......2005-08-04
I have read a few books in the David Scott's Guides series and find them to be very well written, with understandable terminology and examples. He's a very good teacher and doesn't assume you know all the jargon of investing. In this book he builds a solid foundation for what the various kinds of bonds are, why they are issued, how to value them, etc. All your questions are answered clearly and he includes several Web sites to visit to get more information. Buy it, keep it handy, and enjoy the overlooked (by me, anyway) world of investing in bonds.
Understandable.......2004-12-29
A good overview of bonds. I have been dabbling in stocks for several years but avoided bonds because I really didn't understand them. This book provides a concise and easy-to-understand description of bond investments. Even better, it is one of the least expensive books available.
David Scott's Guide to Investing in Bonds.......2004-08-18
A super easy to read book, that provides all the details necessary in unterstanding how to purchase the different types of bonds available on the market. The book gives a clear and easy guide, for the investor, to follow in determining the bonds appropriate for their portfolio. It outlines the risks and opportunites -- with special attention of how inflation and interest rate changes can impact on bond value. Higly recommend that this book be thoroughly read before purchasing your first bond and then reviewed each time a follow up purchase is to be made. A fighter pilot has a check list to be review before each flight. This book is the check list for the bond buyer.
