Customer Reviews:
Every medical student should get this book........2007-09-14
All major topics covered by the usmle step 1 are concisely and intelligently covered in this book. The figures are amazing and integrate concepts so that you are sure to get the big picture and the most important points from each chapter. I use this as my main textbook for my medical biochemistry course. After I get the concepts covered in this book, filling in the details from lectures or my required textbook, (Textbook of Biochemistry With Clinical Correlations, is easy. I am sure that it will make studying for step 1 easier too since, with the aid of this book, I have been able to focus on the big picture from day 1. Also, if there is no preview here on amazon, I think the book's website has sample chapters. [...].
Great reference!.......2007-09-13
This is an excellent resource for decoding those lectures delivered in a less than linear fashion. Well organized, excellent illustrations (cartoons) explain most concepts. Will save your hours of banging your head against the wall. It is saving my happy behind right now! Would not recommend for board review - too comprehensive - but do NOT go through biochem without this translator.
read for boards.......2007-05-25
i read this for the boards(step1). It is readable with nice tables and diagrams that compliment it. you may not have time to read it, but if you have time, pls read this book for step 1. You should also read it during course work, then when the step 1 comes along it should be easier to read. i wish i read it during course work, but i read it for my step 1 and i made a 229/95
The Newest and Best Edition.......2007-02-28
I have used all three of the editions of thisbook in my classes. By far the best review text, the addition of color illustrations adds greatly to the conciseness of the text. Color certainly helps me remember things a bit better, as I have a visual memory. A good study aid and USMLE prep book.
must have.......2007-02-01
if you take biochem, gotta have this book. by the way, biochem blows.

Rapid Review Series: the in-thing.......2007-08-07
I have heard so much about the RR series, and I decided to give it a try, and boy, was I impressed? Talk about how splendiferous this RR Biochemistry is. Also, I have heard so much about Goljan, Goljan, Goljan. So within 5 days or so of laying my hands on the RR Biochem, I ordered for the Pathology brother written by Goljan. They say the man sure knows how to tie Path, Biochem, etc together. I can't wait to get my hands on that as well. RR Biochem rocks, and I am now almost certain RR Path rocks more, if what I hear from reviews follows
Great Biochemistry Review for the Boards but not for class.......2007-03-31
If you are a MS1 I would suggest using Lippincott's Biochemistry. However, when it comes to the Boards this is the book you want as following Goljan's tradition of integration in not only includes relevant Biochm but also alot of Pathology. I would suggest to use this book for review alongside with the Rapid Review Pathology and Goljan's audio lectures.

Customer Reviews:
Too old.......2007-04-10
Buy the new one. The older version (Version 3) is far inferior to the new one (Version 4). Regardless neither version was extremely helpful or relative to my class, however they might come in handy when studying for boards (I am keeping my book till then).
Decent but Rapid Review is Better.......2007-03-31
This book is not bad but for Board review stick with Goljan and get the Rapid Review. For class there is not enough detail so I would stick with Lippincott's Biochemistry
Good Book.......2007-03-23
It's a good to help review before a test. Not very good for intro biochemistry (amino acids, protein structures, post-translational modification, etc). Has good clinical applications.
Great Book.......2007-01-04
This book is a must for any medical biochemistry class. I probably could have skipped all the required texts and just bought this.
Lippincott Biochemistry Checkerboard Review Book.......2006-08-15
The book gives a very clear and concise review of many topics while still hitting on the main points. There are many good diagrams and tables, and the questions at the end of each chapter are very good.

Customer Reviews:
Not A Standalone.......2005-08-23
My experience with this book was a positive one. Well as positive as studying for the boards can get anyway. This text is good for one thing, the overall picture and how the biochem of lipid, carb, and AA metabolism all fits together. This book IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT! a standalone. However, combine this book with Qbank and First Aide and you will be reasonably prepared for the biochem questions. PROS - fast read, good overall picture of biochemical metabolism CONS - expensive, weak on some subjects ie, heme synthesis and porphyrias. Overall this is a good study aide for Step 1.
In need of serious revision..........2005-06-22
I purchased several of the high yield and brs reviews for dental boards. As far as the high yield series goes, this one is by far the worst. Most of what is in this book is really basic info, like stuff you learned in Cell Biology as an undergraduate student. It may get you through the boards, but I really doubt this alone could help achieve a high score. Either save your twenty-five bucks and use your class notes, or buy another review text...cause this one sucks!
A caring man's advice: DON'T BUY IT.......2004-09-04
This book is as unethical as reviews ever come.....Unbelievably expensive 25 USD for its value. A lot of essential very high yield materials are NOT even mentioned. A lot of low yield irrelevant materials mentioned. I dont think the author had a clue what is important. If you wanna a great high yield, get the behavioral science or neuroanatomy high yields but NEVER waste your money on this insulting "review" book.BRS biochemistry is excellent alternative if you have the time or the back of lippincotts review(at the very end) I hope this was a helpful advice.
Good if you need quick quick coverage........2003-06-08
Nicely summed up by the reviewer below. If you need a very quick-and-dirty review, this is good. I take points off due to the lack of index and some weak sections. At this point, QBank leads me to believe that this book may not cover everything I needed to know.. but good for last minute stuff, especially if you hate Biochem like myself.
Good choice for USMLE.......1999-06-24
High Yield Biochemistry is the perfect book for a one or two day board review. It is easy reading without the complex charts and detail needed in the first year of medical school. The book does miss some major points. Vitamin overdoses are weak, as are some major disorders/deficiencies like Diabetes, G6pdh, Hbs/Hbc, and purine salvage.

Customer Reviews:
Great in midterm examinations.......2006-11-11
For undergraduate courses related to biochemistry, Schaum's Outline of Biochemistry is a vital course supply material for quizzes, midterms and also finals. The book contains a wide range of topics including amino acids and proteins, and hundreds of examples at the end of every chapter.
For Timesavers not Great for Bookshelves........2003-05-23
For Timesavers not Great for Bookshelves.
I used this book quite infrequently because of the too short and simple contents. I rather refer to a complete text and shorten them by my own.
Futhermore, this book is not great for bookshelves. It's a paperback!
Great Study Guide.......1999-12-15
I used this book while pursuing my B.S. in Biochemistry and it is the best study guide I ever used. It covers all of the primary topics in undergraduate biochemistry and gives pertinent examples without extraneous information. I highly recommend it as a study aid, especially for standardized tests.

Book Description
High-Yield Cell and Molecular Biology gives you more of what you need to prepare you for the USMLE Step 1! The information found in this text provides a strong understanding of introductory undergraduate cell and molecular biology which serves as a valuable review resource for the board exam. As part of the High-Yield Series, material is presented in a concise, uncluttered fashion. The sections cover information typically found in a second year molecular biology course such as chromosomal DNA, chromosome replication and DNA synthesis, molecular genetics, gene amplification, inherited diseases and molecular immunology. Well illustrated, this text provides students with a strong foundation to prepare them for more advanced work in cell and molecular biology. It also serves as a great source for course review.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad is a quick kill.......2007-03-31
To get the quick and fast H.Y. facts for the boards this is the one! Its shorter and to the point in comparison to BRS. Note this is not a good book for class only for the Boards
Very High Yield!.......2000-11-22
High yield cell and molecular biology is exactly what it says, and from the outset doesn't pretend to be anything else. "Lean efficient text" says the blurb, "Study guides with the barest essentials". These words certainly comforted me after reading the somewhat ominous title! The text is compact, with clear and helpful diagrams illustrating and clarifying the most difficult concepts in the book. The style is in fact very much the same as I might choose to write own revision notes, with chapters divided into sub-titles, and those into bullet points. Key words are emboldened, so it is possible to absorb a page by only scanning the bold type; useful if you are caught short when preparing for an exam and need the facts quickly! There is a smattering of clinical examples throughout, and descriptions of procedures such as PCR, which both help anchor your thoughts of the sometimes abstract nature of the subject. Being a molecular biology book it is biased toward genetics, and as this is a confusing area for many students (including me), this will help if your genetics lectures tend to sail several meters over your head. On the downside, the economic nature of the text and the no-frills nature of the diagrams mean that it is not a particularly colourful or engaging read in it's own right. This is also positive, meaning that it is easier to extract information quickly than would be possible from a more bulky text. It is clearly meant to be dipped into, rather than read cover-to-cover. Realistically though, who would read a textbook cover-to-cover? People who will benefit from this book will be pre-clinical medical students, those intercalating a BSc in clinical science or genetics, doctors requiring an up-to-date review, or other students of biomedical science. This should not be your only textbook on cellular biology and genetics, but will serve as the perfect revision tool when exams sidle up too close for comfort.

Customer Reviews:
Awful.......2007-03-10
What a waste of paper. I bought this book because I was on the verge of failing my first exam. This book was useless and failed to provide basic information on terminology you need to know to even pass biochem. I have so many issues with this book, it would take me until the end of time to list them. Save your money and buy another book.
Not helpful for college level biochemistry.......2007-02-25
I was hoping for a supplemental to my undergrad biochem course. This book breezes over topics a little too quickly. I thought the enzyme kinetics chapter could have been more detailed. I wouldn't recommend this for college students, might be good for people generally interested in biochemistry without any of the details.
Brief overview.......2007-01-13
Very concise and great for a brief overview, but not much detail for important topics.
Excellent outline and overview.......2004-03-21
This little review and outline packs a lot of information into only about 130 pages. This means it makes for fairly dense reading given the technical level but it's obviously intended for the biochem or serious student. The book consists of 15 chapters ranging from 5 to 20 pages in length, depending on the subject. Key concepts or facts are emphasized and often highlighted in dark gray boxes throughout the text, and some chapters include solved problems. A sampling of the chapter titles includes Proteins; Lipids and Membranes; Enzyme Catalysis and Kinetics; Carhohydrate Metabolism; the Citric Acid Cycle; Nitrogen Metabolism; and Gene Expression and Protein Synthesis.
There are about 100 illustrations ranging from graphs and tables to the usual molecular structures and also diagrams of more complex molelcular reactions that require several steps or mechanisms such as the elongation step of polypeptide synthesis, the metabolic pathways of beta oxidation, as well as illustrations of longer ones requiring many steps, like the citric acid cycle, the role of amino transferases and glutamate dehydrogenase in nitrogen metabolism, the urea cycle and metabolism, and others.
Overall this is a useful little book that is one of the most concise and informative presentations of the most important concepts in biochemistry that I've seen, and at only nine bucks the price is right too.

Awesome.......2007-07-26
Every MRS book this author publishes is awesome. This book is no exception. It's definitely not a detailed or comprehensive review. But it sure tied everything together for me, fast.
Best review if you know biochemistry.......2006-04-30
Best one-day review book. 99 pages only!!!!But you need to have a good background in biochemistry. Clinical section is amazing and full as well as "infirmary section" on vitamins and hormones.
Do not read this book if you don't know the ropes of biochemistry.
Want to systematize your knowledge of biochemistry - read it!
good 1 day review.......2005-05-30
If you use this book as your primary text for a biochem course maybe you should look in to the biochemistry for dummies series. On the other hand if you have 24-48 hrs to review all of medical biochemistry and enjoy creative memory aids then by all means drop the $20 and get this book. The biochemistry land map is cool.
Barely helpful !.......2005-03-02
The author of this book failed to simplify clinical biochemistry and to make it ridiculously simple as the title claims. He used a children's approach for learning by utilizing cute names and funny drawings as a mnemonic tool. However, his apporach didn't succeed too well, and made the book ridiculous but not simple. I give this book poor ratings on clarity, style, and substance. It is also too expensive for what it offers. It is NOT worth every penny!!!
good quick review.......2002-11-03
Easily memorizable, great map of pathways, another winner from the ridiculously simple crew!

well orgainized summary.......2007-06-17
I am a first year med student with only a little previous knowledge of chemistry and therefore was a little daunted by the prospect of biochemistry. I found Salway's book allayed a lot of my fears. the reason I found it so helpful was that the format of highlighting each path and discussing the key substrates and enzymes helped focus me in on what was important. I found this a great adjunct to my main biochem text and would highly recommend this book.
