Brother Bear gets into a box. Papa Bear turns the box upside down, takes it outside, and puts it on a truck. The simple art and rhyming text make this a perfect choice for teaching spatial concepts.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Beginning Readers!.......2007-04-14
This delightful classic makes a great first book for the child who is ready to read to him/herself. Its rhythmic rhymes and colorful pictures provide plenty to keep the young reader from losing interest from beginning to end. Its also an excellent book to read to very young children. You may hear them reciting the catchy rhymes to themselves. This is a book well worth buying!
Wonderful beginner book!.......2007-01-08
This is one my son's favorite books. We started reading it to him when he was about six months old. Now, he's two years old and still absolutely loves it - when we read to him and when he "reads" to us.
Like all Berenstain's beginning books, this book is a wonderful vocabulary lesson. Our son has clearly expressed his understanding of "inside," "outside," "upside down," etc. for the last six months. When our friends and family comment on his impressive comprehension we always say, "It's thanks to the Berenstains."
A bore..........2006-07-06
My 10-month old babies have no interest in this book, and they love board books!
TIMELESS.......2005-10-14
I read this book to my boys 30+ years ago, and am just thrilled to be buying it for a new grandson. I had no idea it was still available new. It is so cute and kids absolutely love it.
Read this book to your child with a big cardboard box.......2005-05-09
This book has become one of the favourites of my 18-month old boy. After having read this book to him a number of times, his grandma brought out a cardboard box large enough to for my boy to fit in comfortably. He can now go inside the box and come out of the box and be very proud of himself!

Customer Reviews:
one of my favorite books about adjectives.......2007-04-19
Every time the English-as-a-second-language textbook gives a lesson on adjectives, I use this book as a supplement. The kids enjoy it and find it amusing.
Great Kids' Classic.......2007-02-17
Old Hat New Hat was one of my kids' favourite books and now my grandson loves it too. Perfect for the just learning to speak or read age-group. Simple and funny as well.
Old Hat, New Hat.......2007-01-10
I purchased this delightful book as a Christmas gift for my two-year-old grandson as my daughter had checked it out from the public library and he loved it. He was thrilled to receive his very own copy and has it memorized. It is a classic and also delighted my children.
=D!.......2006-12-11
This book is really cute. How a bear wants a new hat but cant find one. So the store clerk comes out with a whole bunch of hat's, but the bear doesn't like them. Then the bear ends up picking his old hat.
My childhood favorite... and my daughter's, too!.......2006-07-30
When I was searching for new books for my 18m old daughter, I came across this favorite from my childhood.
When Berenstein bear decides to trade his "old hat" for a "new hat" he tries many different styles (too big, too small, too flat, too tall). Turns out, his old hat is just right! It's still one of the cutest books ever written.
Sometimes, my daughter could care less about books I like, but she chooses this one time and time again.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Illustration.......2006-07-08
This is, quite simply, a beautiful book. The simple one-word, per page format works well with little ones who do not sit for long.
great toddler book.......2006-03-01
my 2 yr old daughter shows signs of reading readiness, and this book allows her to be "successful" in her "reading". it is simple enough to allow her to memorize and follow the very simple words on each page with her finger....and the picture on each page allows her to look at the picture then recall the phrase, so in my opinion it really helps the child move toward reading text. short, cute and purposeful.

Book Description
In these beautifully illustrated original books, kids learn about opposites and numbers by spinning the shape in the center of each page to match the art to the story line. The intriguing action of manipulating the shapes to discover two different scenes on each page helps young children learn as they play.
Kids will love repeating the lively rhyme Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around. For added fun, they can turn the spinner on each page to change the picture and learn about opposites.

Customer Reviews:
A daily bedtime story.......2004-09-15
At 2 1/2 years old, my daughter loved the library hardback so much, I bought it for her. Now my son of 20 months loves to hear it every night. I believe the bold primary colors really appeal to toddlers, and the pictures are not too busy as in some children's books. The opposites are educational and the ending endearing.
Great illustrations!.......2002-02-07
My 3 year old daughter (who is a big panda fan!)loves this book. The illustrations are beautiful - so bright and vivid. It teaches about opposites, how Panda Big and Panda Small are different. But in the end they have something important in common. I definitely recommend this one!!
This is a favorite at our house.......2000-09-19
I really like the way this book reads. My daughter loves it. We read this book often and we talk about the other animals in the book, what the differences are in the Big Panda and the Little Panda and how we are similar to them. The illustrations are also wonderful! I think any active mind would get a kick out of this book.
Colorful.......2000-05-31
This book has very colorful illustrations and delightfully teaches toddlers about opposites. My daughter loves to hear it over and over.

Playing in the woods one day, Giant Baby Bear finds a very small... something. "I'm lost," cries the Very Small. "I want my mommy!" Intrigued and sympathetic, the gentle bear decides to take the tiny furry critter home to share his mommy. The Bear family welcomes him, feeding him dinner (one whole pea, five whole crumbs of bread, and one whole spoonful of milk), giving him a bath (in the soap dish), and creating a miniature playground out of matchboxes, cardboard tubes, hairbrushes, and pencils. This is all well and good, but the Very Small still misses his mommy and daddy. His cause seems hopeless, until Giant Baby Bear sneezes a giant sneeze, and sends Very Small flying out of the cave and over the treetops, right back to the very same spot in the woods where he had gotten lost. And guess who's there waiting for him!
This cozy tale of kindness and the unique pleasures of home will warm the cockles of Very Smalls and Very Bigs everywhere. Debi Gliori's Very Small is vaguely, pleasantly reminiscent of Maurice Sendak's Wild Things (Where the Wild Things Are), and her large and small perspectives will appeal to those readers who can identify with being little in a great big world. This marvelous and prolific author-illustrator team also created the bestselling Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
When Giant Baby Bear finds a very small . . . something . . . lost in the woods, he wants to comfort his tiny new friend. So he brings the Very Small home to share his very large mommy and daddy, his favorite oversize toys, and all of his other special big things. The Very Small has fun, but when bedtime comes he longs for his very own little bed.
In the spirit of their previous bestselling collaboration, Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, Joyce Dunbar and Debi Gliori deliver another warm and loving book sure to capture hearts-both big and small--everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Very BIG Hit at Our House.......2002-02-14
The illustrations and text of this book are wonderful. We read this at bedtime very regularly. It is a story about a tiny creature who is cared for by a bigger bear and his family until he finds himself back safely snuggled in his own bed. -- My three year old son finds the play on size just enchanting. He really attends to the story, picks up on the subtleties of the illustrations, and always gives a heartfelt chuckle at the end of the book.-- I guess he knows firsthand just what it is like to be littler than most things, but bigger than some! Great intro to a discussion about the different sizes that all things can come in.
Big Hugs for The Very Small.......2000-11-08
This wonderfully, warm and touching book chronicles Giant Baby Bear's discovery of a Very Small while walking in the forest. Giant Baby Bear offers to share his Mommy and Daddy with the lost Very Small. He even builds a playground for the Very Small using things from his room. The Very Small eats with Giant Baby Bear and bathes in the soap dish. Finally, Giant Baby Bear and the Very Small settle down to sleep. Although, the Very Small is sad and misses his family, it appears he has found a family to share with Giant Baby Bear. Suddenly, Giant Baby Bear sneezes sending the Very Small tumbling and flying safely back to his parents. The Very Small's parents tuck him into bed with his own baby bear who is very, very small. This is a charmingly tender book of sharing and friendship. The illustrations are watercolors with deep vibrant colors. The bears have sweet, loving faces and the Very Small is adorably elfish. The layout of the text when the Very Small is sneezed back to his parents is in a downward arch and adds to the feeling of flying through the story. This fine bedtime book reinforces the value of family and encourages bedtime hugs and cuddles.
The Very Small.......2000-10-12
Delightful! It was a wonderful story about sharing everything that Baby Big Bear had with the Very Small that he just found. Very Small was lost and Baby Big Bear tried to make him feel better by sharing with him. A great way to illustrate compassion to your child. The illustration was beautifully done with appealing colors and an adorable Very Small. My three-year-old and I enjoy it over and over.
Deb Manitowoc, WI
Book Description

The three-word text is perfect for reading aloud to babieswho often ask to be picked "Up!" and will relate to a little girl's love for her comfort object. Preschoolers will be thrilled to be able to read the book themselves. The art tells the story of a child as she wakes her bear, comes down the stairs, tosses the bear up in the air, and catches it as it comes down. How will this resourceful little one solve her problem when her bear becomes stuck in the branches of a tree? Sit down and open the book up to find out!
Customer Reviews:
Great Teaching Tool.......2001-09-11
I have really enjoyed reading Up Bear, Down Bear with my child. The illustrations are wonderful. I would recomend it to all my friends. It has helped build my daughters self esteem because she can read this book and it is not to difficult. It is a great beginner book.
Book Description
Do you know what Bear loves about night and day, up and down, and big and small? They're all opposites!
Customer Reviews:
Bear Loves Opposites and You / Your Kids Will Too!.......2006-10-23
This instructive "Bear in the Big Blue House" book is based loosely on the television episode "As Different as Day and Night." In this story, Bear is exploring opposites. There are all sorts of opposites to explore --- black and white, indoors and outdoors, big and small / tall and short and even clean and dirty (Pip and Pop covered in brightly colored paint and then in the bath.)
The colors on this are wonderful and charming. Each and every page is fully illustrated and the text is simple enough for the youngest readers. Another winner for "Bear in the Big Blue House" fans.
This is a Super-Chubby board-book and easy to hold on to. I bet this is probably one of those books that wouldn't even get damaged if it was taken into the bath, not that I would try it.
This has become a regular part of preparing for bed.......2000-06-02
I've just started incorporating a night time read into my eight month old son's bed-time routine and Bear is a big part of this. He loves the bright colours, the warm characters (he waves to Bear and Tutter on the cover every night), and I love the scope the pictures give me to make my own additions to a story.
This is a great series of books. I know I'm buying more of them!

Customer Reviews:
I loved this book .......2007-09-26
I loved this book, my son enjoyed that he could read most of it by him self.
Interesting.......2002-11-30
This book is a pretty good book for kids. It shows how some things fit and how they don't. The book shows how big things go with big things and little things go with little things.
great book for early readers.......2000-03-25
Excellent early reader for young children. There are only a few simple words frequently repeated in rhyme (which young kids love). Helps young children feel a sense of mastery when they can read a "whole" book. Probably best suited for the 3-6 year old range.
