Book Description
Insect movement is a subject area that has seen many advances in the past 20 years, due to the advent of metapopulation theory, the development of new techniques in molecular biology and genetics and the widespread availability of computers able to cope with more realistic spacial models. There have also been many advances in our knowledge of flight-related physiology and behavior, and dramatic developments in new techniques for studying movement, such as harmonic radar. This book is based on the main papers presented at the Royal Entomological Society's 20th Symposium on this topic, held in September 1999.
Customer Reviews:
Technical. Fascinating stories, great backgrounds.......2002-02-01
This fascinating collection of technical papers present background and original research in the areas of flight physiology, resource finding, migration, dispersal, genetics, and range changes. Depending upon your background, or desire to grapple with the details, some of the papers are quite technical; such as the math behind Britton et al. discussion of deterministic metapopulation models, or chemistry behind proline use in Goldsworthy and Joyce.
The papers cover a variety of taxonomic classes. I was intrigued by Hardie et al description of odour plumes "as cooked spaghetti pouring out of a chimney" .. when describing, for example, fruit fly orienting to an odor source. Dingle's description of wing polymorphism of the soapberry bug was a fascinating exploration of selection of phenotypes. Franks description of self organization of army ant swarm raids was a pure joy.
The technology ranged from Srygley and Oliveira tracking butterflies by boat in Panama, to Riley and Osborne's use of harmonic radar to track foraging bumblebees. Also impressive was Drake et al description of network of data gathering light traps, insect monitoring radar, and GIS habitat assessment, to track locust movement in Australia. Overall a good technical collection.

One of baseball's more enduring classics and earliest memoirs, Christy Mathewson's primer, first published in 1912, has also become one of the game's foremost anthropologies. Mathewson was one of baseball's first immortals: he was a star on the field, winning 373 games between 1900 and 1916--all but one as a Giant; an educated gentleman off the field; and a legitimate war hero who died from the effects of being gassed in World War I. Pitching in a Pinch passes on Mathewson's substantial knowledge of the game in general, and the intricacies of the mound in particular. The book's continuing delight and value rests in Mathewson's facility for capturing--from the inside--the game's ethos in the early 20th century, and the generous combination of anecdote and insight with which he shares it.
Book Description
Christy Mathewson (1880–1925) was the greatest baseball pitcher of his day, a hero with appeal reaching beyond sports. A college-educated player from Pennsylvania farm country, he restored respectability to a game tarnished by the rowdies who had dominated baseball in the 1890s.
Pitching in a Pinch, originally published in 1912, is an insider’s account blending anecdote, biography, instruction, and social history. It celebrates baseball as it was played in the first decade of the twentieth century by famous contemporaries like Honus Wagner and Rube Marquand, managers like John McGraw and Connie Mack, and many others. Always sensitive to psychology as well as technique, Mathewson describes the “dangerous batters” he faced, the “peculiarities” of big-league pitchers, the “good and bad” of coaching, umpiring, sign-stealing, base-running, spring training, and the importance of superstition to athletes. Matty, as he was called, makes the reader feel that tense moment when a player in a pinch must use his head.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely amazing reading.......2002-03-24
What an amazing read. It makes you realize that not much has changed since Mathewson once ruled the roost on the pitching mound. The things he say, the wisdom of experience he imparts sounds so fresh, so immediately relevant to the game as it is played today that it might as well have been written yesterday.
Particularly impressive is the idea that there are pitchers who are fabulous when there are no runners on base, but once the pinch is on (hence the title of the book) they become tentative shrinking violets. The pinch, Mathewson writes, is the true test of a pitcher's character. How right he is, in this true baseball classic. A must read for all who love the game.
mom, baseball and apple pie.......2000-05-10
Reading a book like Pitching in the Pinch will stir an earnest yearning in my heart. It is Christy Mathewsons ghostwritten account of his career in major league baseball. It is a classic work of baseball writing. Mathewson was a 373 game winner in his career and had a lot of great thoughts on the game. He shares insight into John McGraws management skill and he delves into the psychology of the game. You can learn a lot about Americas past-time before Babe Ruth revolutionized the game. This is a highly entertaining and educational book.
Great inside view of how baseball used to be........1997-06-10
If you want to have an insider's view of how the world of baseball was in the early part of the century, this is the book for you. Mathewson takes us there in all its glory. Well done

Customer Reviews:
Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Synonyms = Useful. It doesn't matter what color the cover is, or what edition it is really, as long as you have a big enough version to get enough words into it.
The ability to look up a word and find something similar, or even something opposite, is really very handy.
A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE.......2007-04-30
I've been operating with a 1974 Webster New World Thesaurus for over a year now. It was purchased at a garage sale I think and the more I needed it the less I wanted to rely on it. It didn't contain nearly the amount of words I KNEW exisited and I couldn't figure out how this book could call itself a Thesaurus when it didn't even have words like ABATE, ABACK, ABET, JEER, COMMISERATE, just to name a few. I actually did a little jump when I finally recieved my Super Thesaurus in the mail and have used it nearly everyday since. It's a blessing and the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I am afraid of the spine cracking allowing pages to become loose and the print is rather tiny (small, diminutive, little, wee, puny, miniture, minute, miniscule, lilliputian, dwarf, pygmy, pint-sized, pocket-sized, teeny, itsy-bitsy, microscopic, infinitesimal) but I''m so excited to have an actual THESAURUS that I just dont care. It's worth the buy people. I PROMISE!
Super Thesaurus?.......2006-08-10
The content is good and it's easy to look up words, however this advantage is lost because the print is too small and the spine breaks immediately with normal use and the pages fall out. I'm not happy with this purchase.
Where's Roget.......2006-06-15
This is just another of many alphabetical thesauruses. The reverse dictionary is a joke. There are reverse dictionary entries (WORD FIND) against a small fraction of words. If you want to look up something you have to guess the word it will be under eg if you need to find out "spontaneous abortion" is called "miscarriage" you need to guess to look under "pregnancy". If you want to find "anorexia nervosa" from "dieting to the point of emaciation" you need to guess it will be under "neurosis". You would do better with one of the better crossword dictionaries.
When the title started with Roget's I expected something taking you from general words to specific words as Roget does, as Glazier in Word Menu does and as is done in WordNet, a free program by Princeton University available on the web. If Roget was still around he would sue. Then to add Superthesaurus makes you really expect something out of the ordinary. The quotations are a waste of time. I have "The Synonym Finder" by Rodale and it has many more synonyms and is a better book.
This book starts with a misleading title and then adds in quotations for some words and WORD FIND for others. It seems to be trying to do many things without any real notion of what it is trying to achieve. It may well be a good book for professional writers but for the average user I would give it a miss. I might not have bought it myself if I was able to view the sample pages. Since Amazon changed to its new "look inside" format my browser closes with a message to send details of the fault to Microsoft.
Have gone online for all my references but this one! .......2005-01-28
First of all, let me reiterate that I love words. I enjoy using thesauri and dictionaries to look up words. For many years, I had several dictionaries and thesauri on my shelf. Recently, I have found several online sources for dictionaries, but have not been able to replace my Super Thesaurus.
The book is organized cleanly. Information is easy to find and read.
"Super Thesaurus" would make a great gift for a beginning writer in grade school or a college bound freshmen. I would highly recommend this book for word lovers of all ages.

A must-have for both native and non-native speakers........2004-07-05
Regardless of what you're writing, you will write it better with the aid of this Thesaurus. If you are a non-native speaker of English like me, and you want to expand your vocabulary, buy this book... or alternatively some other Roget's Thesaurus. One of the best things in this book is the fact that you will find what you're looking for very fast.
The original and still the best.......2001-08-23
Roget was born in England of French parentage and made the development of an English Language Thesaurus his life's work. He gained little recognition in his own lifetime but the results of his endeavours have been diligently embellished and supplemented by generations of academics so that now, when we need another word for the one in our mind, when we are seeking a word but it won't come to mind, when we want to put together that "catch phrase" that will bring our customers running to our door, we reach instinctively for Roget's Thesaurus. They're even a standard part of the kit for most Word Processing programs.
Organized both by subject matter and alphabetically, my Thesaurus is a pleasure to dive into. If I have one problem with it, it's that, having found the word I want, I keep reaing for the pure joy of the language. It's my firm belief that Roget has help keep the English language a rich, multi-cultural language that is understood worldwide.

Book Description
When writers need a synonym for a word, they look in a thesaurus. But what if they need a synonym for a phrase, such as "flower arrangement" or "budget deficit" or "sports arena" or "crowning achievement"? Well, now there's a reference that gives them that information as well!
This one-of-a-kind reference offers 10,000 multi-word entries and multi-word synonyms to help writers and students avoid repetitions and cliches and make their writing more precise. It can also be used for Internet searches, in which a key phrase may not pull all the desired information. Synonymous phrases help the searcher find more information with less effort.
* Includes more than 10,000 multi-word entries organized alphabetically in a traditional thesaurus format
* Many entries also feature lists of examples
Customer Reviews:
Roget's Thesaurus of Phrases.......2006-02-25
I think it needed a little better cross-referencing capabilities. I had a specific word I was working with and needed phrases to go with that word. You can't look up most single words. There is no listing.
book sale review.......2005-09-06
This item was in even better condition than advertised and was mailed in a very timely fashion.
Interesting resource, limited value.......2004-10-23
If you're looking for something to peruse on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and you're a lover of words, this is a terrific book. But as other reviewers have noted, it has limited usage value.
This isn't likely to help you improve your writing, but it is likely to help you enjoy language.
Very Useful, But a Bit Clumsy.......2004-01-04
Have you ever been writing and desperately needed another idea for a two-word or longer phrase? Have you consulted your thesaurus and found nothing that matched? If so, this clever thesaurus of phrases is for you.
Some of the thesaurus phrases are fairly technical or formal; for example, Einstein's Theory of Relativity can also be described as the "principle of equivalence" and Darwin's natural selection can be called the "law of the jungle." However, most of the phrases are more colloquial in nature; for example, look up "down-and-out" and you'll find clever substitutes, such as "in the poorhouse" and "on the skids." In addition, a short "phrase maker" section is included at the end of the thesaurus, which provides words that can be paired together. For example, look up "information" and the phrase maker suggests "confidential" or "classified" as modifiers.
This thesaurus is likely to be useful for most any writer, whether your writing is creative or more technical. The only debit is that phrases are not cross-listed, so "in the poorhouse" is not an entry; one has to divine the correct listing for the book to be useful. This problem, however, is a minor inconvenience compared to the likely use writers of all sorts will derive. Highly recommended.
Excellent Resource, Great for Unclogging the Brain.......2003-10-12
I can pick this book up and thumb through it and literally unplog any bloch which is threatening to clog up my writing process. Gratefully, resource books such as this come along which speak to my "wanting to be only the most organized, beautifully spoen" indifividual.
As a writer, it helps me narrow down and focus the word selection when I am frequently getting tangled up in the words and prases when it oulc be said so easily.
Some of the phrases I enjoyed and was surprised to find: "The Bird" meaning "the finger".... and Method acting meaning "character acting, play acting, playacting."
In the back there is a secontion called "Phrase Maker" which is really very cool. I suggest you spend some time there: after all you may be able to think up something brand new, something you might never have thought of before.
