Good guide book but difficult to read.......2007-03-13
This is a good guide book to hiking trails and other information regarding Great Basin National Park. I have some of Bruce Grubbs' other books and he does a good job of preparing you for the trails. While I think it is admirable that the book is printed on recycled paper, it might also be the reason I find it difficult to read. I don't know if different ink can be used when printing on recycled paper, but my 50 year-old eyes require more contrast between the printing and the paper.
Good intro for day hikers.......2007-01-13
I'm planning a backpacking trip to the park this year, and have been reading the pertinent guidebooks. This one is a good intro for the average National Park visitor looking to do some of the good day hikes or short backpacking trips.
This guide contains a basic introductory section on the area: Human and natural history, and some very basic and generalized backcountry hiking and camping tips. The hikes described here can be considered a 'best of' for day hikers and one night backpacking trips, and are relatively accessible from the main park entrance areas.
My main complaint is that there is no detailed overview map of the park, very poorly detailed maps of the hikes (which is an issue I have with most Falcon guides), and no coverage of the remote southern and western portions of the park.
Great Basin National Park is essentially a wilderness park, there are a few great hiking trails (such as those in this book) but the real wilderness opportunities are off-trail, cross country type hikes. For those interested in travelling the remote backcountry and alpine areas of the park, the out-of-print Kelsey guide is like gold. The USGS topo maps are essential for cross-country travel (the Earthwalk Press map being suitable for day hikes but annoyingly difficult to view topographic details due to the scale and coloration). Impeccable compass and land navigation skills are a must, as are Leave No Trace ethics and substantial wilderness experience. Water is often hard to find, rescue is days away, and even many of the designated trails are poorly marked and faint. Have fun!!
Hiking Nevada's Finest.......2005-12-29
Falcon hiking guides are usually fairly straightforward affairs. You get a route description and directions to the trailhead, and not a lot else. This compilation by Bruce Grubbs is a major exception. Full of natural history and geography this book will add to your appreciation of the region. It is also quite comprehensive, including every trail in this spectacular area and many more in the Mt. Moriah Wilderness north of the park.
Hikes in the book include the classics of the park, most notably the guided tour of Lehman Caves and the climb to the summit of Wheeler Peak, Nevada's highest at 13,061 feet. But using this guide will get you to many other nice destinations as well. Ancient Bristlecone Pines nearly 5000 years old can be found within the park as can several nice lake basins and archeological sites. My wife and I took several walks from this guide and are now planning another trip to Great Basin National Park. It is truly the best outdoor experience in Nevada and this is a good book to plan a vacation around.
Exploring Utah.......2000-07-13
Looks like interesting and informative book about Great Basin National Park. I will have to travel there when I'm finished with college and have vacation time

Highland Sage.......2004-07-26
Michael C. White's guide to the Nevada backcountry is absolutely excellent. Those looking for backcountry fishing opportunities will really appreciate the info provided in addition to the wealth of detailed insight White lends on backpacking routes. The topo map section is a huge plus! I have dozens of guide books on backpacking and this is one of the finest I have run across. Friends agree.
Good, but limited.......2004-02-07
The subtitle to this book should read "A TRAIL Hiking and TRAIL Backpacking Guide." If there's no official BLM, USFS, or Park Service trail to a peak, this book won't be much help. As an illustration, the section on the Charleston Peak Wilderness Area--probably the most visited in Nevada--includes a detailed description of the Mummy Spring TRAIL but nothing at all about what I found to be a well-marked use trail to the summit (the "Mummy's Tummy") of Mummy Mountain, probably the most geologically interesting of the area's peaks.
But that's more clarification than criticism. There is enough useful info, like Ranger Station phone numbers, relevant USGS topo map titles, and access mileages, to make the book worth having. Some of the mileages are off enough to confuse readers, and there are other inaccuracies (the appendix of the top 25 peaks in the state, for example--Why isn't 11,253' Mt. Silliman in the Rubies on this list?), but White's book is worth having along with John Hart's Hiking the Great Basin and the Sierra Club Desert Peaks Section's Peaks Guide.

Hiking Great Basin National Park
ASIN: 0960582487 |
Book Description
This is a climbing and hiking guide to the Great Basin National Park, located in extreme eastern Nevada near the Utah line. This national park covers the south half of the Snake Range, which includes Wheeler Peak, the most dominating summit in the Great Basin. The other main attraction in the park is Lehman Caves, formerly a national monument. Also included is the northern half of the Snake Range, with it's highest peak called Mt. Moriah, at 3673 meters. The book has 47 different hikes or climbs.
Wheeler Peak is a real gem! It has a small perpetual snow field nestled in its north facing cirque basin and a rather huge rock glacier, the remains of a real ice glacier from the late Pleistocene Epoch. In this same cirque basin is one of many stands of bristlecone pines in the area. In this particular stand, once stood the oldest living organism on earth, a bristlecone pine estimated to have been 4900 years old (it was cut down in the early 1960's in the name of science). There are many other stands of these trees in the park and in the Snake Range.
Besides the climbing section with 47 hikes, there are also chapters on Lehman Caves, the Bristlecone Pines, History of Mining in the Snake Range, and geology of the area.

A comprehensive and informative book.......2005-12-24
I'm planning a trip out to the park this fall for some hiking and climbing, and I'm glad I got my hands on this guide. The route descriptions are mostly hikes or easy scrambles up to the peaks and through the bristlecone groves. The book's got a good deal background info and history on the park, detailed route descriptions with variations, gear recommendations, amenities and park regulations all packed into a convenient and light book. The maps are simple but useful for getting a good overview of the terrain, basically drawings showing the lines of the ridges, trails, roads, bristlecone groves and glaciers. For good maps stick with the USGS 7.5 minute quads. Most route descriptions also include black and white pictures of the route from a good vantage point.
A couple words of warning: distances and elevations are all metric, and some of the info, particularly on amentities, may be somewhat outdated, having been printed in 1988.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, though less user-friendly than alternatives.......2007-08-20
The main two books I read when studying the Maya script were this one and Michael Coe's "Reading the Maya Glyphs." Ultimately, I preferred this one because it is more in-depth and scholarly, but I did miss the exercises and easy-to-look-up tables that the Coe has. The Coe is also slightly better illustrated (or, at least, more flashily illustrated, which is admittedly not the same thing). Either book can add greatly to your appreciation of monuments at sites such as Palenque and their museums, and ideally I would recommend purchasing both books.
I'm somewhat conflicted about this next issue. The Coe book delves further into some more cutting-edge grammatical theories such as morphosyllables and syllabic disharmony (don't worry, both are explained well). These theories are fascinating, and are barely discussed by Montgomery in the book on this page. HOWEVER, there is far less scholarly support behind these controversial ideas, and in many ways I think Coe makes them seem more accepted than they are. Montgomery's conservatism is probably more academically honest.
It's very difficult to recommend one over the other because they both have their strengths and weaknesses. It may be overly general, but if you're looking for a more sophisticated and deep understanding of Maya script, the book on this page is probably better. If you want a more practical study (including exercises to test your comprehension), go with the Coe--just remember that scholars are less certain about some of his claims than it may seem.
I never got it!.......2007-03-09
Sorry, I never got the book, so I would not know what to say about it.
How to read Maya.......2003-05-08
In short, it is a book for those interested on learning how to read Mayan Hieroglyphs. It gives you a step by step approache and good examples, taking you to some final exercises that will help to start by yourself.
AWESOME!!.......2002-09-03
This will become known as one of the standards. It is a masterpiece in its format and its presentation. Mr. Montgomery did a fine job in methodically (a compliment) going through the material and explaining the nuances of "hieroglyphs." I highly recommend the book.
review of Mayan hieroglyphs guide.......2002-04-08
Excellent book. I have a degree in cultural anthropology and started studying the Maya thirty years ago. Finally, we have a clear, precise explanation of how to approach and gain understanding of the glyphs with excellent background history and perspective. Although I am now an attorney, I still study Mayan culture and archaeology and find the book extremely interesting, approachable and a great pleasure to read. The facts that are added to give background do indeed, provide a well-rounded understanding of the evolution of the cracking of the code. I can't praise it enough. I waited a long time for a book like this!
