Book Description
Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water! The second astonishing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA book from Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart is about to pop up everywhere.
While dinosaurs patrolled the lands, massive prehistoric sharks, giant scorpions, and colossal squid cruised the ancient oceans - most with just one thing in mind: eat or be eaten. In this companion volume to the best-selling ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS, pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart explore the prehistoric underwater world, where monsters like megalodon ruled the waves.
Full of captivating facts and more than 35 breathtaking pop-ups, this incredible volume is sure to astonish and amaze everyone from budding marine biologists to confirmed landlubbers. After all, if prehistoric coelacanths and crocodiles are still around, what else might be lurking in today's largely unexplored oceans?

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and other Sea Monsters.......2007-10-03
Absolutely gorgeous and intriguing pop-ups. Good information about the sharks and sea monsters. I love all things by Robert Sabuda. Good for kids 4 and older.
Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters.......2007-08-25
This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!
Excellent pop up book, reading is complicated.......2007-08-16
Cool book. Reading is over the age category of my daughters, but they simply enjoy the pop ups.
Absolutely amazing!!!.......2007-08-13
This book is unbelievable! The attention to detail is fantastic. Absolute value for money and a must for any child who is as taken with sharks dinosaurs as my son is.
Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters.......2007-08-12
Robert Sabuda always does a fantastic job and this is just another example of an exciting, educational pop-up book.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book, so funny!.......2007-09-24
My daughter is 2 and loves this book along will all of Sandra Boynton's other books. She can't get enough of them. You will laugh so hard when you read them all. She has a wonderful since of humor and the books are very easy to read. My daughter has many of them memorized already, so do my husband and I from reading them over and over. This book along with her other ones are a must have.
Birthday Monsters.......2007-06-18
My son loves all of Sandra Boynton books...it is a great Birthday book for a boy or a girl!!! I always keep a copy on hand for birthday parties that are short notice!!!
One of the best of Boynton.......2006-12-28
Once our family got hooked on Boynton we had to have all of them. This is one of my favorites and the one that my 2 year old and 4 year old ask to have read to them just about every day. I think we love this one just because it's so much like birthdays at our house.
It's fast pace is great for toddlers and preschoolers. Boynton books are generally great to start out with as early as possible, but even if you don't pick up your first one until your child is a preschooler they can be great for learning to read. They're very quick to memorize.
Wonderful Book!.......2006-08-29
I bought this book for my daughter's 2nd birthday and she absolutely loves it. She can "read" the book word-for-word as I turn the pages because we've read it so often!! Sandra Boynton is a fantastic author. We have a bunch of her books and they are definitely my daughter's favorites (and mine too).
Just funny........2006-07-07
It is a funny, an entertaining book. Story and pictures are very cute.

Definitely best price.......2007-04-02
No idea how it was done, but I got it 75% less price with amazon that with any other vendor, perfect condition, my son loved it, he just goes literally everywhere with them.
Complete covers everything.......2007-03-22
These books cover everything from scientific names to places. It is heavey on bigfoots from around the world and overlaps some on them but all in all a good read if your into the science part of cryptozoology. There are stories in the book about sightings but this is not a pure sightings book it is more about cataloging the cryptids.
Phenomenal 2 Volume Set!.......2004-10-17
Finally! A long overdue authoritative encyclopedia of cryptozoology! This set is awesome! There is so much information here that it'll take a veeery long time to digest it all.
I do have several suggestions though:
1) More photos and illustrations (especially photos and stills from film footage which are discussed, but not shown).
2) Dustjackets. The covers are gorgeous, but how long will they remain so without dustjackets? And at this price, you'd think the publisher could afford it. Which brings me to...
3) The price is outrageous. How can the publisher make any money by limiting it's buyers to libraries, rich people and fools like me? $60 sure, even $75, but $185? Jeez! And even though I paid WAY less than that for my set, it still almost killed by bank account.
Even so, I'm glad I bought it and wouldn't be without it.
A Very Intersting Ecylcopedia.......2004-10-16
I accidently stumbled upon this item while looking for anything on the Paranormal. The Book seemed very intersting and I bought it. The Price was a Killer, but it was worth it. It is set in 2 voulumes which is more like an Encyclopedia, but in the Final Sections of Volume Two mainly is Reference to all the New Species discovered in the 20th Century. Also in the real Final pages, are all Lakes that supposedly have Monsters in them like Lake Erie or Lake Champlain. I would recommend this Book for Reference, but not for reading from Start because like I said, it is more like an Encyclopedia than a Non Fiction Novel.
A collection of animals reported to exist at some point.......2004-09-25
This two-volume set is a basic layman's guide to the weird, wonderful world of unknown animals. These are animals whose existence has not been proven at this time. While the idea that there may be animals, including some very large ones, living in the world and we have no proof of their existence might be strange to some people it was during my lifetime that gorillas and rhinoceroses were removed from the category of fables.
For each entry the editors provide information on its physical description, behavior, distribution, possible explanations, significant sightings, and sources. This is a non-judgmental review of the reports from around the world presented in a typical encyclopedic style. Although it contains primarily creatures reported to exist but not proven it also includes some animals like the Dodo bird, which were known to exist and are believed extinct. But, because there have been occasional reported sightings in recent years these animals are included.
ABC-CLIO, Inc. published some of the best educational materials of this type on the market today. As always Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology is a high quality reference work written at a high-school level and so is accessible to everyone. Mysterious Creatures is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in this area and a recommended purchase for libraries.

Book Description
Art students with special interest in comic strips, graphic novels, and computer games graphics will find a wealth of instruction and inspiration in this new volume. A widely recognized artist in these media shows how to draw and paint fantastic beasts from literature and legend, double-headed sea monsters and serpents, satyrs, centaurs, dragons, and demons. The first step in illustrating such beasts comes with understanding basic anatomical forms of animals in nature, and then learning how to distort these shapes. Author Kev Walker also instructs on rendering reptilian skin, scales, and fur. Equally important, he offers grounding in the principles of perspective and scale, enabling students to create believable beasts that are as huge as skyscrapers or small enough to hide under a bed. Students will also find detailed information and advice on drawing techniques, watercolor and acrylic coloring techniques, and composing illustrations on their computers. This book features an extensive glossary and more than 200 color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginers to intermediate.......2007-07-24
Unlike other books I bought this one is not only showing you finish artwork, but it shows you how to do it with clear instructions. There's a lot of creatures also to get inspiration. The techniques demonstrated goes from traditional to digital.
very good less comic strip style book.......2007-05-07
I really enjoy this book for its more professional, polished, artwork. (For some reason there is a stigma among booksellers and teachers that all dragon and fairy how to books have to be for children and young adults. This is definitely not the case.) Not all the creatures are perfect and not all the creatures are favorites of mine but overall this is a nice book for the more advanced artist, or even a nice coffe table book for those just intrested in the subject.
Little Bill.......2007-01-04
Really Kool! I loved the art work. It was a little beyond my immature status for drawing pics but if I continue to practice I'll get better.
Whoever created these drawings has a gift for fantasy.
Very nice!.......2005-12-14
I've looked through this book several times while browsing various bookstores. Over and over I've found myself marveling at the wonderful artwork that lines the book. For me, I must say it's an excellent book for drawing fantasy beasts, painting them as well. I'm yet to get the book, but I've looked at it enough times to know how good it is. Personally, it's one of my favorite "How-to-Draw" books.
Enjoyable and Instructive.......2005-10-20
I bought the Drawing & Painting Fantasy Beasts and the Fantasy Figures books for our high school library. The kids really enjoy them and so do I. I just signed on to see what else might be in this series and to order more copies. While these books may not appeal to everyone (not enough step-by-step for true beginners), the layout and abundance of good pictures and ideas will grab most readers and artists.

Book Description
“Dogzilla rises from a volcano to break up the First Annual Mousopolis Barbecue Cook-Off, and scatter the Big Cheese’s troops with her fearsome doggy breath--but the threat of a bath sends her scurrying back to her mountain. Illustrations are painted in bright acrylics around cleverly trimmed and placed photographs of Pilkey’s pet mice, cat, and corgi, for a wonderfully silly look, appropriately accompanied by a pun-laden text.”--School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
hilarious.......2007-10-04
I bought this book for my eight year old along with KatKong and she loves the illustrations and word play. I could hear her laughing from downstairs! In Dogzilla, Pilkey recreates the Godzilla I knew and loved as a child by replacing the fictional creature with a common pet dog. The story is especially funny as a read aloud.
I love hearing those giggles from my preschooler.......2007-06-13
My son adores this book, and I must admit that I find it to be rather clever too! He can't stop laughing when we read it, and he entertains us by quoting the funnier sections to us. The book is clever for children and adults. It is a fabulous parody of Godzilla, which adults can appreciate. Plus there are puns and adult humor interspersed with the generally level of child silliness. Fun, fun, fun!
Rampaging Dog!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-30
This is a sweet book. Especially when puppies come out of the volcano. It's pretty funny when Dogzilla eats the mice furniture and that's just the appetizer. She eats the whole store! Check out the funny ratings in the beginning of the book.
Funny a few times.......2006-04-25
Dogzilla has interesting illustrations and a long series of jokes, funny at different ages. My 2-year old likes most of it, except the bits with no dog in them (note that although she is dog-crazed, other books do not have to have a dog on every page; she likes good text, too). I found it funny the first few times, but it doesn't hold up to the number of readings she requires to digest a book. We tire of it and hide it before she is done with it.
one of the best kids books in a long time.......2006-02-05
"Dogzilla" is hillarious to say the least. We discovered this book quite by accident while waiting for an appointment. We read this book five times before our name was called and laughed until the tears were streaming down our cheeks. I had to write down the information before leaving because we had to get our own copy. Well thanks to grandparents and amazon we've laughed our way through this book several more times. Even sent it to school with my four year old to share with his class and they laughed their way through it too. well worth the money as it will quickly become a treasured favorite for the whole family. most definitely five stars.

The best book ever!.......2007-09-26
This book is a great book for kids who like monsters, because it's about a monster who tries to take over the sea and land with a whole lot of floods.
I really like this book and I think you would too.
First Grader's Review.......2007-06-11

Customer Reviews:
Not for kids..........2007-06-17
This book is only so-so as a drawing book, whether for beginners or more advanced artists. The pictures are weird, and not aesthetically pleasing, even for monsters. However, this is definitely not a book for kids. The pictures are frightening enough to give kids nightmares. Think horror. Not a very useful book.
Pink?.......2007-05-09
I ordered the library editions of this book for my grandson and another little boy and I was surprised that a "draw your own monster" book would come with a pink cover! I was also a little disappointed in the array of superheroes, but I'm sure copyright restrictions made it necessary to exclude Superman, Spiderman, Batman and so on. This is a case where actually seeing the book before purchasing would have been a help. Vona Van Cleef
Great book!.......2006-01-26
I can't draw very well, so I bought this book to improve my drawing. This is a Great book for beginners! Gives you an idea how to start off and how it should looked finished! Awesome book as a "get started guide type". And After you got the idea of how to start to draw the monsters you can create your own. Perfect idea for kids that love to draw!
Great basic drawing book for the young AND young-at-heart........1997-02-22
Lee Ames does another excellent job, as he does with his entire "Draw 50" series. His step-by-step format is easy to use and quite rewarding as well. Ames is the only drawing artist that simplifies the drawings so that anyone can follow and become adept at drawing intriguing figures. This particular edition contains a great variety of characters to draw and will be on and off any doodler's bookshelf for years
Book Description
Following the hugely successful Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Prehistoric Beasts, DK dives into the past to swim with prehistoric reptiles and mammals in Chased by Sea Monsters. Exploring the underwater world where he "encounters" amazing creatures, Nigel Marven presents a unique record of a lost world never revealed before now.
Customer Reviews:
So Realistic, It's Scary!.......2007-08-02
I bought this book for my teenage son who has autism. He asked for this book. It's great! It coinsides with a program with the same name that has been shown on Discovery Channel. The book is a perfect companion to the program. It has awesome descriptions and "photos" of the prehistoric animals. It clarifies when each animal lived, and what the world looked like at that time. The fact that Nigel Marvin "went back in time" to study these monsters was awesome! Anyone who loves prehistoric animals has to have this book in their collection!
Look's Good.......2007-01-10
I bought the book and it's on the shelf right now waiting to be read. I have already seen the program and it was excellent. I'm sure the book will be aswell. I bought the book because I saw the program and it made me want to buy the book. I at least recomend buying the film. My brother has read the book though and he said he really liked it. I think it would be a good idea to buy the book and see what it's like for yourself.
Chased By Sea Monsters!.......2006-07-06
Face-to-face with sharks that can bite whales in half? Swim with armor-plated fish so powerful that they can bite through chain mail? Dive into the midst of a feeding frenzy? Do all this and live to write about it?
This is the premise behind "Chased By Sea Monsters", the companion book to the Discovery Channel program. The series featured intrepid zoologist/time-traveler Nigel Marven swimming in the seven most deadly seas of the prehistoric age and encountering some of the most dangerous (and not-so-dangerous) sea monsters of those eras, such as the Jurassic and Devonian. Some of the creatures that Nigel encounters are the marine crocodile, the pack hunting mosasaur, the may-not-be extinct megalodon shark and the whale-eating prehistoric whale the basilosaurus.
The book is a word-for-word print version of the program though it also features a few more facts about some of the creatures. The book does not go into a lot of biological detail about the creatures but you do get a good feel for how they interacted and what they ate (or what ate them), and what climate conditions were like. The book does provide brief summaries of the creatures, giving the era they lived in, length, what they ate and the like.
If you would like to be "Chased By Sea Monsters" and get more of a feel for the marine reptiles of the dinosaur age, this is the book to have.
Sea Monsters.......2006-06-14
This is a great book to go with a great documentary. It talks of top seven predators that lived in the oceans of the past in seven different time periods, like the massive squid-like Cameroceras (which would have made modern squid squirm helplessly), the bone-crushing Dunkleosteus (which makes piranhas seem like minnows), the largest ichthyosaur ever -- Cymbospondylus (which luckily feeds mostly on fish), the biggest carnivore ever -- Liopleurodon (of which the only protection availiable is a chemical detterant, if humans were to venture into such waters), the pack-hunting Tylosaurus (which could have eaten a Tyrannosaurus), the most vicious whale ever -- Basilosaurus (compare to modern baleen whales) and the eighteen meter shark -- Charcharodon (which would make it's modern cousin the great white shark look like a mere goldfish). There is one flaw, however. The two authors of this book have varying tones of writing. One writes it in an encyclopaedic way, while the other writes as if it is a story. (Like the Walking With Dinosaurs and Walking With Beasts books). Both do have a sense of humor which shows in their infoboxes on how to survive in the waters of the time period in question, as well as the hazards there.
Ichthysoaurs, mosasaurs and plesiosaurs, oh my!.......2006-01-14
Written as a companion to the BBC television documentary series, this beautiful book takes the reader on an illustrated journey thru the prehistoric oceans. The book highlights seven different time periods (in seven different chapters) in the Earth's past, and shows the sea creatures living at those times; emphasizing those with the biggest jaws and their respective prey.
In each chapter, the book examines the physiology, anatomy, habitat, and probably lifestyle of the top predators. Each chapter also shows what is happening on land at that same time, and consistently shows that the predators on land were really no match in terms of size or scariness with respect to their marine counterparts. Covered monsters include reptiles such as mosasaurs, aquatic carniverous birds such as hesperonis, sharks like megaladon, and mammals such as the king of whales; basilosaurus. Each chapter also shows how the earth's continents were positioned at that time, along with the state of the global climate.
The book is beautifully illustrated, with color pictures drawn to look like underwater photographs of the actual creatures as if they were still alive. The intro chapter also gives a timeline of life on the planet, and explains how life evolved from sea to land, and often times back to the sea again. Overall, a great book; though it is missing several things that prevent me from giving it 5 out of 5 stars. First, throughout the text various sea creatures are named without any accompanying figures. Second, the term "sea monsters" implies animals at the very top of the food pyramid. Unfortunately, this book fails to "flesh out" the rest of the food pyramid. Each chapter should have included one large illustration of a food pyramid, with illustrations and names of the various organims at each step in the pyramid. Third, outside of one chapter, the book emphasizes creatures living and hunting in the shallows, or the top layer of the ocean. It would be nice if the book also examined more creatures living closer to the ocean bottom, such as deep-sea fish. Last, there should be a concluding chapter to sum everything up. This chapter should also include a large picture of the modern Earth, and highlight where fossils of the different "sea monsters" have been found. Even with these drawbacks, the book is still wonderful, and is great reading for kids, teenagers and adults.

Great to engage kids--even boys!.......2003-11-01
I first read these books to children when I was babysitting, many moons ago. Children absolutely love them! The colors and pop ups are visually stimulating. The stories are easy for children to follow, and anticipate! Little boys in particular like the stories, and in my experience they are the first books they choose.
