Book Description

From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our planet.

Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are "shield bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself — like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.

Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity — an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever.

5 out of 5 stars Love Pop-Up Books.......2007-10-14

This pop-up book was the best! It had everything. I gave it to my Nephew for Christmas and he hates anything that isn't a video game, but really did enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-10-13

I got these for my grandkids & dinosaur lovers. They were a big hit with the kids. Their faces just lit up as they saw how the pages opened up with more & more information & pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, fun and educational!.......2007-10-10

Bought this on a whim for my 4 1/2 year old son. He loves it! There are so many pop-up dinousaurs. The verbiage is a little too scientific for his age group, but he loves hearing it anyhow. We like to read the section on meat-eaters over and over again. It's fun to look at, and is very educational. I learned a thing or two about dinosaurs myself.

5 out of 5 stars so cool.......2007-10-10

I still can't get over that I got this awesome book for only 6 dollars. It was so worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Domosaur PopUp Book.......2007-09-29

This book was absolutely amazing. The detail of each and every dinosaur was just phenomenal. I purchased several for Christmas presents. My 5yo grandson is soo crazy for anything dinosaur. I know it will make a big impression on him if no one else. Recommend child shoukld use this book with some adult supervision due to the intricate popups. The price was good too.

"How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"

Every sleepy little dinosaur will recognize the tricks of the trade in these bedtime shenanigans. The chuckle factor is sky-high here, with giant, full-page pictures of cleverly identified Tyrannosaurus rexes, triceratopses, and Pteranodons. A variety of human mothers and fathers trying to put their dinosaur children to bed will bring the point home that the story may have something to do with human kid behavior as well. This good-natured nighttime book is sure to be a winner (even though it might inspire a few noisy dinosaur antics), especially as it's written by Jane Yolen, prolific Caldecott Medalist author of Owl Moon. Yolen and Mark Teague have teamed up to create a fun, silly, playful read-aloud. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

What if a dinosaur catches the flu?Does he whimper and whine between each "At-choo"?Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?Does he fling his medicine out of the door? Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best. As in their first dinosaur book, Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and hilarious pictures.

I love everything about this book. My 10 month old will sit through this book and just look at all the beautiful colors and laugh at the silly things the dinosaur does.

5 out of 5 stars Charming story, Captivating illustrations, Good message.......2007-08-15

Open the book to discover an enormous Tyrannosaurus Rex on a ridiculously small bed with his human father telling him it's time for bed. Each whimsical illustration tells the story of dinosaurs preparing for bed and asks if they pout, stomp their feet or cry at bedtime. In the end we learn that dinosaurs don't put up a stink, but instead give big hugs and kisses before going to bed. The illustrations are fun and the story is sweet with a great message subtly telling children the right way to go to bed. (It's perfect for any parent who has ever tried to put a stubborn child to sleep!)

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-07-21

My daughter loves this book. Mark Teague illustrates this book fantastically. The dinosaurs have so much emotion in their faces you can read your own childs face in each dinosaur. We have read this so much my little 3 year old memorized it. This is an absolutely amazing book and would be great to add to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect goodnight book!.......2007-06-02

I have 3 year old twins and they love this book so much that they know all the words by heart, and it is fun to act out what is said on each page, we read several stories before bed, and this is their favorite one.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-05-03

My girls and I love this book! It is the perfect rhyming book with ample opportunities to add life to it while you read. My girls love to stomp their feet on the floor, and we all stop when we get to "does a dinosaur" and real loud all three of us ROAR and they get such a kick out of that. They also like to show me the Mama and the Daddy at different points. We also have the clean up book and that is equally as good. And the illustrations are fantastic. A HUGE fan of this author/illustrator and I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Book Description

It's winter, and Wolf, Torak's beloved pack-brother, has been captured by an unknown foe. In a desperate bid to rescue him, Torak and Renn must brave the frozen wilderness of the Far North.

As they battle for survival amid howling blizzards and the ever-present menace of the great white bear, their friendship is tested to the breaking point, and Torak is forced to get closer to his enemies than ever before. . . .

Soul Eater is a haunting story of loyalty and loss, a chilling portrayal of the nature of evil, and the next step in the perilous journey that began with Wolf Brother and Spirit Walker.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #3: Soul Eater (Chronicles of Ancient Darkness)
This series if wonderful. My son and I started reading this together as a school project. We have purchased all three books and enjoy the time together reading. This is a book that keeps me interested as well as keeping him interested and reading!

5 out of 5 stars Chronicles of Ancient Darkness.......2007-07-09

I purchased this book for my son who is 13 years old and has never been interested in reading books. I homeschool my son and I purchased the first book in this series "Wolf Brother" for him to read for school. What a GREAT FIND! He loved the book and asked for the next two in the series. My daughter and I have read the series also. We can't wait for book #4 to come out. This series has very high energy, lots of action and it is an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars In the great forests of ancient times, Torak and his friend, Renn, once again hunt........2007-06-05

In the great forests of ancient times, Torak and his friend, Renn, once again hunt. With them is the giant wolf dog who is never far from Torak's side. Everything seems normal to them until Torak comes across the feather of the fierce eagle owl, which is a bad omen. Though Torak throws it away, the hunt is spoiled when a giant eagle owl swoops from the tree tops and scares their prey away. Then, unexpectedly, Wolf darts away as if in pursuit of new prey. Though they try to follow, he easily out-distances them.

After some debate they decide to continue their hunt for Wolf and not go back to their Raven tribe. Little do they know what this decision will mean as they struggle deeper and deeper into uncharted, frozen lands. This is the beginning of the end for Torak and Renn.

In the meantime, Wolf has fallen into a trap set by the dreaded Soul Eaters; he has been beaten, drugged and caged. The Soul Eaters are in the process of gathering the fiercest animal hunters to sacrifice. It is the strength of these hunters that will help make the Soul Eaters the strongest tribe. They are power hungry, evil and reek of rotting flesh as they move forward with their evil plan.

Without the help of the White Fox Clan, Torak and Renn might have perished. When attacked by the winter bear, it is Fox Clan member Inuktiluk who helps them and takes them to the frozen river so they can attempt to cross into the dangerous unknown. But even in their worst dreams, they have no idea how horrible it will be when at last they find the beloved animal.

...The tip of Wolf's bushy silver tail was matted with dried blood: but it wasn't that which turned [Torak] ill with fear. It was the slimy greenish-black flesh which showed through in patches. Flesh which stank of rottenness.

"It's the blackening sickness," said Renn. "It's poisoning him. The worms of sickness are eating him up from inside."

Once again, Michelle Paver has created a magical world in which good and evil are constantly at war. Torak and Renn are more fully realized as their characters mature and endure harrowing experiences. Paver's writing is fluid and strong, capturing the language, landscape and personalities of this ancient time. Readers of the first two installments of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series will be thrilled with this story --- probably the most powerful book yet.

4 out of 5 stars A considerable improvement........2007-04-20

I enjoyed Wolf Brother but hated Spirit Walker and I was weary that this entry in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series was going to be just as meandering and slow. Fortunately it's not and it's just as good as the first book.

Wolf is kidnapped by the evil Soul Eaters so Torak and Renn must chase after them into The Far North to rescue him. Their chase brings them to the Eye of the Viper, a cave deep, deep in a mountain where the Soul Eaters have made their lair and intend to sacrifice 9 hunters to unleash demon hoardes under their control upon the world.

The mythology is getting a tad out of hand though. I don't know whether these forest people simply don't understand science and physics and mistake everything for fate, miracles and magic or if it's just their ancient point of view trying to make sense of it. That complaint aside, it's a good book that you'll not want to put down until you've finished it. It's way more fast moving than Spirit Walker and brings the COAD series back on track.

5 out of 5 stars Great series........2007-04-07

It was a cool book. I like how it took place on a icy snowy mountain. Can't wait for the fourth book to come out!! This from the mouth of an adventurous 10 year old boy.

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaurs are great!.......2007-09-28

This has fast become my son's favorite book! He asks for it all the time and is also learning good manners too!

5 out of 5 stars My grandkids.......2007-08-23

I bought this book for my grandson, (2), but my grand-daughter, (4), also loves it. The book is in a series and since my grandson loves it so much I am buying more of the series. I like it because he can't rip it up and the pictures are so clear that we can use it for educational purposes and they don't even know it.

2 out of 5 stars Fun book but badly translated.......2007-07-12

I bought this book so my father who is Peruvian would have a Spanish book to share with my son. Unfortunately, he says that the translation is terrible. So, being a good Papa, he just makes up the story according to the pictures. My son doesn't mind because he so loves the dinos and their mischievous behavior.
I'm disappointed because I thought I'd be able to read it to him and work on my own Spanish which I won't be doing since it's not a good translation.
I got a second opinion from a Spanish-speaking friend and she agrees that the translation is not very good.

5 out of 5 stars A DINO HIT.......2007-02-15

My three yr old grandson loves this book and he is currently very
fascinated by Dinosaurs. It gets the message across about a clean
room and at the same time it is laugh out loud funny. The clever
illustrations are a winner too. You won't go wrong with this fun
book! Thanks Amazon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book as taught us a lot!.......2007-07-13

I bought a bunch of books for my 4 year old son when I learned he was teasing the other kids at his preschool. This was one of them. He loves this book, and I notice that he has gotten so much better playing with other children since we started reading this book.

It has been so effective that I simply say "Jimmy, is that how you be a good friend?" when I feel he is being unkind, and he will answer me, using "good friend" examples from the book, and immediately change his behavior. He also tells other children how they can be "good Friends" too.

Unfortunatley, as he nears the age of being a "tattle tale", he is very quick to point out when other children aren't being "good friends" and tells them "You need to read Mommy's book." LOL

I highly recommend to any parent.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Kids.......2007-02-22

I enjoyed the book. It will help my students become better friends with personal ideas and reasons.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-01-10

Reinforces the criteria and requirements that kids need to know to be a "GOOD" friend in easy to understand examples.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......2007-01-04

I bought this book to find out how to help my 10 year old with some basic friendship issues. This book was VERY basic and geared for a younger child, but I feel that it is a great book for any parent. My daughter read it also and said that she thought it was very helpful, but a little too "kiddy" for her taste.

5 out of 5 stars Kid's Review.......2006-10-19

I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend. It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.

Book Description

What if a dinosaur's friends come to play? Does he mope, does he pout if he can't get his way? Does he hide all his dump trucks, refusing to share? Does he throw his friends' coloring books up in the air? Time and time again, children are told to "play nice." This brilliantly illustrated board book is packed with rhymes that will teach children how. Mark Teague's laugh-aloud illustrations, along with Jane Yolen's playful text, will show children that "playing nice" can be easy and fun. Perfect for parents to read aloud with their children, this book is as humorous as it is instructive.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-11

This book was a great continuation of all the dinosaur books in this series. My 3yr. old daughter just loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Great!.......2007-09-11

I saw this book in Kohl's department store and my kids leafed through it while I hunted for backpacks & shoes. Books were not on the list that day, so we left it behind, but after seeing it in my son's Scolastic catalog, I think I'll order it from Amazon! Love anything that teaches positive manners and reinforces my instruction.

5 out of 5 stars a must own for any child.......2007-08-12

My 16 month old daughter loves having us read this book to her over and over and over again, she never gets sick of it, love how it has all the different names of the types of dinosaurs too (even though we don't know how to say some of them!). Can't wait to get all the other "how do dinosaurs" books for her!

5 out of 5 stars A HUGE hit!.......2007-07-15

My 2 year old loves books and when I asked the children's librarian for some suggestions for my dinosaur lover she suggeted all of Jane Yolen's dinosaur books. My son adores this one. I like it since it has a wonderful message about sharing with friends and we are working on that skill. We read it over and over and I am now going to have to purchase it to keep at home. The board book is a great size since we can take it in the car or in the diaper bag.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!.......2007-05-12

These Dinosaur books are great for both boys and girls. I brought this book (and two other Jane Yolen Dinosaur books) into my sons pre-school
class and they all begged me to read more...These books are great and they teach lessons in a very funny way.

Red-Wagon says:
My daughter came home with this book from the school library. I was very disturbed by it, but couldn't put my finger on why that might be. I immediately searched it out on Amazon to see what others have written so that perhaps I can determine what it was that bothered me so much. 'Ian5281 "GES"' hit the nail on the head when he said the book "sends a strong message that one's beliefs in concepts supported by facts are best abandoned for more popular and immediately rewarding beliefs". I spend a lot of time trying to help my daughter analyze facts and think for herself. This book merely teaches her to act like a sheep and join the crowd. The value in this book is in the discussion that we will be having.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-08-15

My son, Nicholas, is 4 years old. Nicholas is the light of my world, my universe, and he loves books. With that out of the way, Nicholas is also autistic. I have found though, that there is no way to go wrong if I get him a Mo Willems book. I got him Edwina this past year for Christmas, and he sleeps with it, he tries to tell you the story, and he loves to have it read to him. Something about Willems's books completely captures him, and since I tend to enjoy them as well, it provides us something to do together. Try it, you'll probably like it.

2 out of 5 stars Prepare your child for a lifetime of faith and belief in popular, but incorrect ideas with this book.......2007-04-13

It took a couple of reads through this book with my children before I was moved to write this review. The book is indeed very cute, and the kids enjoy it.
This book sends a strong message that one's beliefs in concepts supported by facts are best abandoned for more popular and immediately rewarding beliefs. Reginald Von Hoobie Doobie knows that dinosaurs are extinct, and tries to tell the whole town, who prefer to trash his leaflets, and revel in their mistaken belief that dinosaurs are real. He then is shown abandoning his convictions, ignoring the scientific evidence, so that he too can have cookies and be happy.

I don't' think I want to teach my children that it's proper to ignore the facts, and hold a belief that though easier and by far more fun, is false.

I present one of many possible examples that demonstrate the danger in the corrupted thought process this book supports. Currently a change in the global climate is said to be occurring that could dramatically affect humanity in the coming generations. Part of society chooses to ignore the evidence for their immediate reward, and get their cookie in the form of high emission SUVs. Part of society understands that some difficult sacrifices must be made for the greater and larger good, and are trying very hard to sell that unpopular view with no cookies.

There is an abundance of great children's books out there. We have several other books by this author that are wonderful. (The pigeon series is fantastic!) But this book is one cookie that I recommend you NOT feed your child.

Book Description

How does a dinosaur eat all his food?Does he burp, does he belch, or make noises quite rude?Does he pick at his cereal, throw down his cup, hoping to make someone else pick it up? Just like kids, dinosaurs have a difficult time learning to behave at the table. However, with a little help from Mom and Dad, these young dinosaurs eat all before them with smiles and goodwill. As in their previous books, Yolen and Teague capture children's rambunctious natures with playful read-aloud verse and wonderfully amusing pictures.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top of the list.......2007-09-10

When I read this to my son, I act out what they're talking about on each page. He finds this to be quite humorous, and this has propelled this book to the top of his favorites list. (He's 21 months)

5 out of 5 stars Great illustrations!.......2007-08-27

My two and a half year old is really into dinosaurs. My mother bought him this book and he loves it. The only problem is after I turn each page he says, "Mommy, what is that dinosaurs name?" It is interesting that scientists named these creatures such long and hard to pronounce names. But he learns and so do I. The illustrations are wonderful. If your child really enjoys the illustrations then I would stay away from the board books because the dinosaur pictures are much smaller so you don't get the full impact of the pictures as in the hardcover books. The advantages of the board books however, are that your child does not rip the pages and they are easy to transport for road trips. So no matter the format, if your child is into dinosaurs, they will really enjoy this book series and so will you.

4 out of 5 stars How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?.......2007-07-14

How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food? blends a child's curiosity and interest in dinosaurs and the parental desire to teach table manners. The story starts out showing colourful illustrations of various types of dinosaurs as they are in the act of eating in ill-mannered ways. The caption below asks if the dinosaur ate this way. For instance, "does he bubble his milk?" At the end of the story, the child gets an answer that dinosaurs always ate with the best of manners.

Though definitely not realistic in it's depiction of how dinosaurs really ate, this book is fun. It also allows parents to reinforce table manners in a new less openly nagging way. This book also includes a cute little mini rendition of the same story for kids to carry in their pocket or to read along with.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, a hit.......2007-07-03

The dinosaur series is a hit with our family. This one is good to remind them about manners and being polite to others at the table. The one I got came with a mini book too so I can take it to restaurants for added emphasis.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for children.......2007-05-17
