A hit!.......2007-09-23
This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.
Our Daughter Loves this Music.......2007-08-16
Our 17-month old always asks for Ella the Elephant music. She's completely entertained by it. My only complaint is that the book has minimal use, as there's not much to point out for an entire song on two pages.
Great quality fun jazz for all ages........2007-06-27
Our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter played 'Ella Elephant Scats...' over and over for the week she was with us. We ALL enjoyed it every time.
16 month old loves this book.......2007-01-15
Do not know if it is the rhyming in the beginning of the book or the beautiful breakout colors but my 16 month old loves this book.
An intelligent book for babies! .......2006-12-22
I was so impressed by this book! I happened across it a few months ago and had to buy it. since my son is still quite young (6 mos.) we havent really played the CD much, but whenever I bring the book out he grins so big! He loves the sounds and pictures! I come from a family of jazz lovers, so this is right up our alley! I can't wait to get the whole series.

Elephants!.......2006-08-20
My son -loves- elephants so it would be hard for this book to be a miss. The illustrations are beautiful.
Wonderful!.......2006-08-10
We have been reading this story to our 2 year old daughter since she was 2 months old and it's still her favorite book. She now recites the words as I flip through the pages - this book has definitely left an impression. Additionally, the pictures are colorful and fun! It's such a sweet story about the fun a mother and child have together, and the special bond the two share. I'm sure your little one will love this story just as much as mine does!
Favorite Bedtime book.......2006-07-28
My 2 year old and I read this every night. It is a wonderful book and we look forward to it every night.
"My Mama's love surrounds me always".......2006-07-12
Toddlers and Preschoolers will identify with the little elephant and how he enjoys the mom's company through the different activities of the day. It's a good book to reflect on the blessing of families. Good bedtime story. Beautiful illustrations.
A Beautiful Book - Words and Pictures.......2003-06-14
My son is almost 2 and this is one of his favorite books (and mine too!). The words are put together so eloquently and the amazingly beautiful illustrations make it the complete package.
The book really captures the love between a mother and her child.

Customer Reviews:
Great for a "chosen" adopted or foster child.......2007-04-22
This was a favorite in my home with my young (bio) daughter. When my husband and I became foster parents I read it to my foster daughter and used it to reinforce the idea that we "chose" her.
She loved to hear the process that we went through to be able to have her live with us. She understood that we would choose her "everytime"!
Blessing your child!!!.......2003-02-05
This is a wonderful little book for children and adults alike, and it focuses on giving the blessing to children, much as Trent has written in other books, but this one is focused on the children, and what impact that can have on them.
The story follows Norbert and the fact that no one wanted to sit with him on the way to school. And his way to school is exciting - they all go on a rollercoaster. Now that's what I call creativity. Judy Love has done some marvelous illustrations, and you just want to jump on this rollercoaster with all the others.
A great tool in the hands of parents and caregivers to give the blessing to children.
Wonderful!!!!!.......1999-05-11
I volunteered to read at an elementary school at a Read in and the class consisted of 2nd,3rd, and 4th graders- The teacher loved the story and the kids absolutely enjoyed it. I'm ordering 2 copies-1 for my 7 yr. old and the other copy I'm going to donate to the class.
It is our childýs favorite book........1999-01-19
"I'd Choose You" is a great book to help a child gain self-expectance. It has colorful illustration of animals that are used to help a child understand the five elements of the blessing: spoken words, meaningful touch, attaching high value to someone, picturing a wonderful future and genuine commitment

Book Description
Elephant-headed and big-bellied, mischievous and sweet, the god Ganesh is one of the most familiar faces in the world. But why does he have the head of an elephant? Set in the Himalayas in a time of gods and goddesses, Elephant Prince tells the story of a remarkable bond between a mother and her son, a remorseful god, a generous elephant and the boy who became Ganesh. Belgin K. Wedman's jewel-toned illustrations, reminiscent of classical Indian miniatures, complement this poetic story of one of the most beloved gods of all.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful match of authenticity & contemporary sensibility.......2005-06-19
I have been searching for children's books that present the Hindu gods and goddesses and this is by far the best of all that I have found. This is a beautiful book that matches authenticity with contemporary sensibilities. My four year old appreciates this one as much as I do. I have found that with many books retelling stories from Hindu texts, the story is often presented in a way that is inaccessible to young children. Here the story has been retold beautifully. In this version, it is not Shiva who cuts off Ganesh's head but Shani's gaze that turns the head to ashes. While this is not the most popular version, and may be a disappointment to some, it is 'authentic' and the source is cited. I think this makes the story a better read for my young daughter. Additionally, I really like the way that Parvati is presented as a goddess, a princess and "also just a girl." Beyond the story, the art is wonderful. Take one of your best children's books and imagine how it would look with a Hindu flare and that is what you will get here. The art is engaging and the images are detailed enough to keep a child's eye but not overly complicated. The authenticity of the presentation is very respectful. I would highly recommend this book as an introduction to one of the children's favourite Hindu gods, Ganesh, and as an excellent children's book for anyone interested in plurality and multiculturalism. I hope that the authors will collaborate again for more tales of the gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon.
Stunning watercolor artwork with gold leaf highlights.......2005-04-11
Elephant Prince: The Story Of Ganesh will serve to entertainingly introduce the elephant headed Hindu god to young readers ages 4 to 8. Belgin K. Wedman's superb illustrations are a perfect story-telling showcase to talented children's author Amy Novesky's story set in the Himalayas during a time of gods and goddesses. Elephant Prince does not recount the commonest version of Ganesh's origin, in which Parvati creates a child from earth and her husband Shiva is so surprised by the stranger he cuts the boy's head off; instead, Elephant Prince draws upon a classic Indian text entitled "Brahma Vaivarta Purana" to present a version in which Parvati wishes for a child and to her delight has her wish granted, yet tragedy strikes when the god Shani (Saturn) accidentally destroys the child's head, for whatever powerful Shani gazes upon is instantly obliterated. The merciful god Vishnu brings the boy back to life with the aid of a wise old elephant, who chooses to sacrifice himself so that the child may be restored. And so Ganesh lives again with the head of an elephant, and becomes skilled at writing down stories. The elephant will live forever, and Ganesh lives and is loved by all - especially his mother. The stunning watercolor artwork with gold leaf highlights was deliberately created in style of the Kangra school of painting, developed in India during the 16th century. Highly recommended.

In this delightful companion book to Caterpillar Spring, Butterfly Summer, a cute baby elephant shares his admiration for his mom's specialty talents - using her trunk (a colorful cloth-covered spring that runs through the pages) to reach up high, to play hide-and-seek with him, to give him a quick shower, and to cuddle and kiss him at goodnight.
Customer Reviews:
Surprising!.......2006-01-04
When I opened this book, I wasn't expecting to see a big cloth trunk inside--and neither was my 11-month-old son, who was instantly delighted.
The illustrations in Mama Loves Me are nice--I'm partial to blue elephants, so I was bound to like these happy characters. The text tells about things that the mother and baby elephant do together. Although these activities (like playing with lemurs) aren't things that most children have experienced, many readers will be able to relate to the warmth of the parent/child relationship. The specificity the author uses in description of the elephants' activities makes the story more interesting.
There isn't much of a plot to this book, but I don't know how much plot a person can expect of a board book. Mama Loves Me is a feel-good story with an interesting format.

Really sweet book!.......2005-02-28
This is a really sweet book. My 22-month-old loves it. It is written in the style of 1,2, buckle my shoe, and some of the text is a little bit awkward if you're thinking of that while reading, but it didn't seem to bother my daughter. Overall this is a great book that I enjoy reading to my little one. Nice illustrations and sweet text (I love you all the way up to ten and back down again).

ASIN: 1598582623 |
Book Description
TRAGIC DEATH. WILD AFRICA. NEW LOVE. HAUNTING PAST. Fleeing from the deaths of her husband and sons, Julie Brooks finds herself in the wilds of Africa, hoping to leave her painful past in California. Managing a luxury safari lodge soon fills her life and mind as she falls in love with the rugged natural beauty of Amboseli, a game park in Kenya. Life would be close to perfect were it not for her troubling nightmares. Intrigued by her beauty and spirit, Marc Witmann seeks to unravel the mystery that so tightly surrounds Julie. However, his brazen advances and constant inquiries only irritate and alienate her. Undeterred, Marc persists in his attempt to understand and help this troubled woman. With time, Julie reluctantly begins to accept the fact that he shares her love of Africa and slowly Marc opens her eyes to the unspoken language of this wild land. Nevertheless, a wounded woman is not always willing to share her past, no matter how charming or persistent the inquirer. And regardless of their plans, they must realize that Africa has a will of its own. Christy Carroll Rehmann is a mother of five and lives with her husband in Tennessee. She has traveled extensively throughout her life, but Kenya has and always will hold a special place in her heart. She hopes that this book will give you a glimpse into the soul of this extraordinary land.

Loved it! Couldn't put it down.......2007-08-23
I was given this book as a gift. Picked it up one day, and couldn't put it down. Loved the fact that the chapters are short and beckon you to go to the next to see what happens. As I read this book, I visualized it as if I was watching a movie. It has great feeling, appeal, is emotionally moving. I had to put it down before the end, afraid of what might happen to the characters. Anticipation was one of the factors that kept me reading. You want to get involved, and you wished and hoped for Julie all the way till the end. Left me wanting Christi's second book. This book is classy, no trash, a definite re-read. Hope you will love it as much as I did. I would love to see it as a movie.
Amazing African Adventure Experience.......2007-08-02
This book makes you feel like you're in Africa and experiencing everything that happens in the book! There is a cool trailer at http://youtube.com/watch?v=z7GcAhRMd1c check it out.
Everyone should read this book!!.......2007-02-09
This is a great book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. It is very well written and the plot is very exciting. I want to travel to Africa after reading Amboseli Wimbo!! I can't wait for the next book by Christy Carroll.
A must read!.......2007-01-23
I loved this book and couldn't put it down! Christy Carroll is a great writer. I fell in love with the characters and learned so much about beautiful Kenya. I was sorry when the book ended and I look forward to Carroll's next book.
A real treasure! Read it again and again!.......2007-01-18
What a great novel! I don't have a whole lot of time for pleasure reading any more (I'm a med student), but I could NOT put this book down! Carroll really puts you into the mind of Julie (the main character), who will instantly win your heart. Whether you have travled or not, you begin to love Africa as much as she does. The plot is fast-paced, and keeps you guessing and wondering and reading!! I love Jane Austen's works, and I think that Carroll is able to touch on the intellectual interplay between the two sexes just as Austen did so well, and she also stays away from the trashy romance scenes as Austen tactfully did. Amboseli Wimbo is a good, clean, enjoyable read. You will re-read this book!!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Book Description
For millennia, people all over the world have revered, adored, and exploited elephants. In Thailand, a pregnant woman ducks under an elephant's belly in hopes of having an easy delivery; a tycoon builds an elephant-shaped skyscraper; and pirate loggers feed amphetamines to their elephants to make them haul back-breaking loads. In India, milling worshippers dance with gilded tuskers at ecstatic temple festivals. From the steppes of Siberia to America's prairies, scientists have proposed restoring lost ecosystems by reintroducing the elephants and mammoths that once ruled them. And generation after generation of readers have delighted in Babar, Horton, and Dumbo. In a kaleidoscopic account rich in historic lore, surprising science, and exotic adventure, Eric Scigliano traces an age-old, extraordinary relationship between species and shows how it still haunts and inspires us today. He explains how elephants may have been "nursemaids" to human evolution and how they have shaped history, art, religion, and popular culture as no other animals have. He joins a grueling chase after crop-raiding rogues in Sri Lanka and probes the bitter battles over the roles of elephants in zoos and circuses, revealing the enduring ecological importance and mythic fascination of these endangered giants.
Customer Reviews:
Strip away the journalistic fluff and its a good book.......2002-12-11
Scigliano makes no bones about the fact this book is more about Asian elephants than their popular big-eared African counterparts. Tragically, this must have meant with the dearth of literature on Asian elephants, the first half was his own compilation - and it was written in that exasperating journalistic style of starting in the middle, dribbling to the end and then abruptly bouncing to the beginning and drifting back to the starting point. This meant reading about 20 pages before realising that actually, some interesting stuff had been said.
Fortunately, the 2nd half of the book picked up as it focused more on the modern day treatment of elephants, which I suspect there is a lot more information already compiled. So, around the time we begin to learn about the history of elephants in circuses in America, the book suddenly takes a quantum leap in readibility and was thoroughly enjoyable until the end. In all due fairness, Scigliano really tries to present a fair view, but in the end, you just can't. The fact of the matter is, humans are mistreating elephants (and any giant wild mammal for that matter!) and many people appear to blind to it - delibrately. I felt in the end, Scigliano had made up for the awful rambling start and successfully turned me into a raging environmentalist - albeit, I am now more concerned for the plight of ALL wild mammals as ALL are threatened from habitat destruction by mankind!
Provides a special focus on elephant/human relationships.......2002-08-08
People have adored and used elephants for hundreds of years: this provides a special focus on these elephant/human relationships, explaining how elephants may have contributed to human evolution and how the elephant's image continues to inspire popular culture. Add scientific facts about elephants and details on the author's own travels to view them and you have an intriguing, wellrounded blend of insights.
Elephants, but Mostly Humans and Elephants.......2002-07-10
Elephants are special. I bet you know someone who collects elephant sculptures and pictures. (If not, perhaps you know a Republican.) Elephants are the number one attraction in the circus, something that circus managers realize very well. Pandas might be a bigger draw at zoos, but they are really hard to get, while there are plenty of zoo elephants. Many people worship Ganesha the elephant god, and others have a soft spot for Horton or Babar. They are big, which always impresses humans; but we are not equally impressed by, say, giraffes. Despite their size, elephants are relentlessly cute; they are obviously intelligent and active, and those trunks do impish and clever things. They are social beings among themselves, and they do form important bonds with humans; though it is an exaggeration that they never forget, they do have capacity to remember those who treated them well and ill, for a long time. It is the bonds with humans that Eric Scigliano treats in _Love, War, and Circuses: The Age-Old Relationship Between Elephants and Humans_ (Houghton Mifflin), a book that well captures the awe, delight, and sorrow we hold for the pachyderms among us.
Scigliano confesses himself addicted to "elephalia," and the evidence is all here. He has traveled to distant lands, and to zoos and circuses to learn about the captive version. Scigliano's book winds up being an amiable miscellany of elephant lore. There is the Bangkok developer who built a skyscraper in the shape of a deco cartoon of an elephant. There are other smaller elephant buildings as novelty architecture in, say, Coney Island. There has been a ballet for elephants, the Circus Polka, and before you think that this was some seedy novelty act, the choreography was by George Balanchine, and the music by Igor Stravinsky. It ran for a season in 1942. Elephants in Kenya dig deep caves to get to the salt. Others dig wells, which benefit all the animals around. But elephants have not generally fared well at the hands of the humans who ostensibly adore them. Thai elephants, for instance, are worked illegally on protected reserves, and because the furtive work has to be done with speed, it is literally done with speed; the elephants are tanked up on amphetamines to work all through the night (whereas a three to five hour period is considered the maximum safe working day). Circuses and zoos may try to treat elephants humanely, and perhaps are better at it than they used to be, but some of the horror stories here are truly disheartening. The big beasts need plenty of room, and simply cannot get it in captivity; and there are fewer wilds for them to return to, as farming takes over their lands.
There are good conservation programs in elephant homelands, and Scigliano makes the case that the efforts now going to breed and raise elephants in captivity would be better directed to indigenous conservation. There are other things we could do, but it will take the humans to get involved and do them. This may be a book about elephants, but it is also specifically about humans who supposedly care about them. Scigliano's book tackles all aspects of this puzzling relationship. "Each inquiry into the elephant-human tangle leads to paradox, even after thousands of years of undomesticated domestic partnership. While we prop up our civilizations, literatures, and faiths upon its broad back, the animal remains untamed, and in many ways unknown." His valuable book can help us understand how important elephants have been to us, and how impoverished the world will be if they are not given the room they need.

Book Description
A little elephant has a very important question-"WHAT COLOR IS LOVE?" All the animals in the jungle try to help him-maybe it's blue, maybe it's pink... but he isn't quite happy with the answer until he comes back to his mother, who gives him the best answer of all: It is all the colors of the rainbow all around you. Nothing else matters when it's love that you've found.

Perfect for preschool.......2004-02-27
A little elephant roams the jungle asking what color is love, and the brightly colored animals all around him try to answer, but no one can until he returns to his mother. A sweet story, perfect for my just-turned-three nephew, who takes great pride in showing off his new-found knowledge of colors. The illustrations are bold and bright, the story soothing--good for bedtime.
