Book Description
A professional naturalist's incredible, personal portrait of America's largest and most pristine wilderness in the lower 48 states: the Northern Continental Divide ecosystem in Montana, Alberta, and British Columbia. This vast area includes two national parks in two countries (Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes in Canada), three designated wilderness areas including the famous Bob Marshall Wilderness. This book describes the area's geology, wildlife, plant life, and crucial environmental issues with over 150 stunning photographs. A great gift!

Crown of the Continent text!.......2006-11-11
Without a doubt, the finest piece of nature captured not only in stunning photographs (many by Ralph himself) however the text is a must read to capture the true escense of Ralph and his skills and talents as a naturalist.
Reading this book feels like your are walking right next to Ralph as he treks the widerness of Montana describing the surroundings through his eyes and knowledge that he possesses. No stone, plant, feather, or animal is left unturned. Well written! Fantastic reading!
A portrait of landscapes and seasons.......2005-05-06

Crown Of The Continent is a portrait of landscapes and seasons, flora and fauna, captured in stunningly beautiful photography enhanced with an informed and informative text. Never a better way to see the Crown as it is - awesome.......2005-02-10
This book literally brings alive the great natural resources of the Crown of the Continent. Author Ralph Waldt brings his passionate love of and commitment to the preservation and perpetuation of this unique and wonderful area. When you read his book, the experiences come alive and you can literally feel that you are by Ralph's side, "tramping" the wild places, seeing the environment with a richness born of personal involvement, a touching and tasting of the natural beauty and diversity of the Crown. If you have any interest level in being more a part of nature, this will help you realize your ambition, and propel you to new heights of engagement with the earth.
Captures the essence of the Rockies.......2005-02-10
I live in Montana. Ralph Waldt expressed what it's like to live here and walk those trails and see the animals much better than I ever could. Oh, and his photos are just awesome.
A feast for the eyes and the heart of the nature lover.......2005-02-06
This book contains some of the most beautiful pictures of the northern Rocky Mountains that I have seen. The author becomes your own personal guide as he takes you on a virtual tour of some of the most breathtaking scenes of the area. In the writing he shares the different facets of the landscape, animals, and character of each area. With its exquisite photography, Crown of the Continent is a highly recommended nature book and a real pleasure just to sit down and browse through.
Book Description
Here are 330 trail-tested, hunter-proven tips from people who know elk hunting -- members of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Customer Reviews:
Good collection of tips.......2005-10-15
This is a good book to sit and peruse when you have idle moments, the "tips" are all only about a paragraph long. These tips are time-tested bits of advice from experienced elk hunters regarding such practical issues as clothing, gear, handling the meat, etc. They may not all be applicable to your situation, but if you find just one tidbit that makes your hunt easier, safer, or more enjoyable, it's worth the price of the book.
Good for its purpose.......2003-11-15
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to elk hunting, this isn't it! On the other hand, if you just want to spend some time looking through the thoughts and ideas of other elk hunters, buy this book.
Yes, some of the suggestions are contradictory. That's because this is a compilation of ideas from many different people. Ask three different hunters the best way to take an elk and you'll probably get five different answers! And all five of them are in this book.
For me, this is the perfect "bathroom book." You know, the one you can pick up and glance through when you've got nothing else to do. You don't have to start at the beginning and read through to the end. Open it to any page and see what another hunter has to say.
Especially considering the very reasonable price, I definitely recommend this book.
Marginal.......2003-01-07
Many of the tips in this book may be O.K for a begining hunter, but anyone who has spent very much time in the field, will not find many new ideas. I suppose any new idea may be helpful, but I was disappointed to only find a few.
Tips and Tactics Only Average.......2002-01-14
Elk Hunting Secrets offers more conflicting anecdotes than helpful suggestions. The stories and tips, while often amusing, seemed to conflict with each other more often than not and as such could leave the curious but unexperienced elk hunter scratching his head. My recommendation is: if you are an experienced elk hunter, you will find the stories and tips interesting, funny, and maybe from time to time, helpful. For the price, its not a bad little book. For the inexperienced hunter, look elsewhere before turning to this book. You may end up being more confused than enlightened.
One afterthought - the tips for camp and horse care were for the most part very good. If you are the leader or host of a yearly elk camp, this book may have something for you.
Somewhat less than 330 tips.......2000-07-09
When the title says tips that is exactly what it means, this is a compendium of blurbs about elk hunting that range from one liners to several paragraphs. While this book has some interesting and useful information a lot of it is not detailed enough, and there is a lot of tongue in cheek for a book that is supposed to be serious. A little more editing to remove the filler would have been useful. For the price, its not too bad, but if you expect integrated information on elk hunting spend the extra money for one of the more in-depth books.
Book Description
Don't just step past those animal signs on the trail. Those are scats and tracks and they have a story to tell. In Scats and Tracks of the Rocky Mountains, Dr. Jim Halfpenny, a nationally renowned tracker, teaches you how to decipher these messages. Was that footprint left by a fox, a mountain lion, or a wolf? Was that pile of droppings deposited by a moose, a mouse, or a marten? This book can help you determine which mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians have passed your way and might be nearby. The book includes written descriptions and illustrations of the scats, tracks, and gait patterns of 70 Rocky Mountain species, an identification key, and a glossary of tracking terms. For a deeper understanding of the woods and wilderness, Scats and Tracks will prove indispensable.
Download Description
Wonder no more about those tracks in the mud or that poop on the path. With this packable guide, identification in the field is easy. Featured are the tracks, scats, and signs of 70 different species including wolf, ferret, grizzly bear, as well as birds, frogs and salamanders. Scales for scat diameter and footprint size are included along the edge of each descriptive page. Plus, for accurate measurements, there's a ruler on the back cover.

excellent resource for teachers and students.......2007-03-27
I purchased these books to use in an outdoor field workshop for science teachers in Colorado. The books are great and the teachers really appreciated them.
A Small Jewel.......2002-12-30
This small field guide supposedly covers from Colorado/Utah north to the Canadian border, but many of the animals illustrated also range into the Pacific Northwest, western Canada and California, so this book is useful for most of western North America. There are two pages for each of the 70 mammals, birds and reptile/amphibians. Every animal has a small-scale range map, overall sketch, sketch of its droppings, large sketch of forward and rear footprints and a sketch of the pattern left by several footprints. I found the latter especially useful since many times the individual tracks are not too clear, especially in sand or dry snow, but the track pattern provides a positive identification. This lightweight, pocket-sized format makes it convenient to carry. Highly recommended for hikers, campers and nature buffs.

Scats & Tracks of the Rocky Mountains.......2000-10-05
Winner of a 1999 National Outdoor Book Award, this small guide contains a wealth of information.
As an environmental educator who has been teaching tracking classes for over 15 years, this is the book I now use for all of my classes. Page for page, "Scats and Tracks" is the most useful and useable resource for track identification in the field that I have found.
Packed with information that is useful to both the novice and the more experienced tracker, "Scats and Tracks" is the easiest of the various guides for beginners to use, yet contains enough information to remain relevant as one's skills improve.
The quality of its contents make the book an invaluable resource; its size, format, and organization make it easy to understand and use effectively. If you're going to buy just one of the many books now available on track identification, "Scats and Tracks" should be the one!
excellent fo beginners.......2000-02-26
This pocket sized guide helps the reader identify the scats and tracks of 70 of the more commonly encountered animals of the rockies. It gives good informative descriptions for the first time tracker.

A Truly Beautiful Book.......2002-10-05
This book captures the beauty and spirit of Colorado. Mr. Keen has a rare talent that allows him to transport us to places of extreme beauty through his artistry. An added bonus to this book is the companion cd where he shares his expertise with his readers. If you want to experience Colorado, pick up this book, sit back and enjoy.
Wonderful Majestic Views.......2002-08-28
As a longtime resident of Colorado I have loved looking through the photos of the many places I've hiked and visited over the years. The pictures of the mountains are awesome. When I am citybound, I just pick up the book for a reminder of how wonderful Colorado is. The crispness and color in the book make these photos belive you are right there, standing in the very space the photo was taken. You don't have to live here either to enjoy this book. Many of my out of state relatives love it! Highly recommended!
Best gift/coffee table book on the CO Rocky Mountains!!!.......2002-08-28
I own this great book on the Colorado Rocky Mountains! Every page shows breathtaking pictures in the Colorado Rockies... from quiet streams and meadow wildflowers to the towering aspens and "purple mountains majesty". The best gift/coffee table book that I've seen in a long time and certainly the best of the Colorado books. We were able to see this book and a display of a dozen or more of Jim Keens panagraphic images at Denver International Airport in early 2002. The 3 x 8 foot enlargements were awesome! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good book to buy as a gift --- and you'll enjoy it so much you'll buy one for yourself as well.

Book Description
This large-format high-quality photography book depicts the beauty of the Rocky Mountain landscape from New Mexico to the Yukon. Scenic photographs maximize the detail and tonality range. Dramatic landscape photographs depict Rocky Mountain vistas reflected in alpine lakes and backcountry rivers. There are also accent photographs of the wildlife found in these alpine regions.
The text presents an overview of the topography of the Rockies and the natural history of the mountain environment, including the three major regions:
The Southern Rockies (New Mexico, Colorado) highlighting Rocky Mountain National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Snowmass Wilderness, San Juan Range and Sangre de Cristo Range
The Central Rockies (Wyoming, Montana, Idaho) highlighting Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Medicine Bow Range
The Northern Rockies (Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon) highlighting Waterton Lakes, Banff, Jasper, Revelstoke and Yoho National Parks, the Columbia River Valley and Kananaskis Park.
Customer Reviews:
A+ -- wonderful color photos of mountains, water & wildlife.......2005-09-09
This remarkable book represents the state of the art of printing color photographs in books, and at a very reasonable price.
I see a lot of pretty nature-photo books. They're almost always OK, but seldom memorable. This one's a keeper.
Check it out.
Happy reading--
Pete Tillman
Excellent book for my collection.......2001-01-14
For my liking, there is an excess of reflected images in this book even though the photography is excellent and sharp. I love the shots of the wildlife, however I would have enjoyed seeing more of the abundant flora of the region. Even with the minor shortcomings I can honestly say that this book deserves an excellent 5 star rating. With the help from OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY magazine I am a huge fan of several well known nature photographers-- John Shaw, Nevada Wier and Art Wolfe just to name a few. After buying this book and taking in all the photographs I can say that Tim Fitzharris is quickly joining that group!
review response.......2000-09-01
Can the reviewer above (Linda Wimberley) count? Of the 70 landscape photos depicted, 7 or 10% are from the Grand Tetons, arguably the most beautiful park in the Rockies. Glacier is represented by 2 photos not one.
Missing a few things.......2000-08-02
This has some great pictures of the Grand Tetons. And only one of Glacier National Park. There are many wildlife pictures and some of the canadian rockies. Generally it's a great picture book of the Grand Tetons.

Once remote but now among the fastest-growing regions in the country, the five Rocky Mountain states--Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming--contain 22 of the nation's more than 300 wildlife refuges that are open to the public. Some, such as Idaho's Camas National Wildlife Refuge, protect endangered habitat (in this case, the wetlands of the Snake River). Others, such as the 18,000-acre National Bison Refuge west of Missoula, Montana, and the National Elk Refuge near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, are devoted (but not limited to) single species that were once at the brink of extinction. Naturalist John Grassy tours each of the refuges in this well-written guidebook, offering notes on the animals and plants found within them and suggesting walking and driving itineraries for visitors. --Gregory McNamee
Customer Reviews:
Brief and to the Point.......2003-06-04
This guidebook will help you to find each of the National Wildlife Refuges operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, in the Rocky Mountain states. There are a 3-4 pages for each refuge, focusing on its history, directions to get there, opportunities for driving, walking, and bicycling in the refuge, and a discussion of major wildlife species protected by each refuge, as well as some of the political issues surrounding certain refuges. I had hoped for some general information on Rocky Mountain wildlife; the book was not at all helpful for that, and had very few pictures or photgraphs of wildlife, but it did alert me to a refuge along the route of my upcoming vacation. So without the book I would have missed an opportunity for some spectacular wildlife viewing with only a 27-mile detour. The book accomplishes its purpose very well; I gave it only three stars because that purpose is very limited.
