Comprehensive but lacking in organization.......2006-01-10

Wilderness Press hit a high mark with their Sierra North and Sierra South books. This comprehenisve guide to the Lake Tahoe Sierra is to be commended for being very comprehensive, containing 112 hikes that touch on all corners of the Tahoe area. The descriptions sparkle much more than than the typical dry text in these sort of guides as well.

Unfortunately the book could stand to improve its layout and maps, especially the all-important master map pages that clue you in to where hikes are located. Also, the individual trail maps are often nowhere near the text for the trip. Hopefully a future edition will improve upon the book's layout.

Indispensable.......2003-11-01

This book was one of the first that my wife and I bought upon coming to California in 1980. It has since fallen into at least ten pieces from overuse. This new version is also excellent.

There is a level of detail throughout that we appreciate, providing an interesting, experienced viewpoint and guide. We also like the way the different regions are highlighted. Sometimes we just head off to one of the regions and find a trail that looks interesting.

Best Tahoe area hiking guide.......1999-01-21

The fourth edition of this book is a vast improvement on the initial release (3 editions ago). If you are looking for a complete trail guide to the Tahoe Basin, this is the one you want.

A great grammar - n.b. a few errors.......2006-11-19

This is a grammar most deserving of its title. It is truly comprehensive in every sense of the word. The grammar is explained along lines that a Westerner with even a pinch of grammatical knowledge can understand.

It is probably a good idea that the examples of erroneous grammar are included, complete with an asterisk to indicate that it is an error. However, I can't help feeling that they'll remain in my memory and I won't be able to tell the difference between a sentence that's been hailed as a grammatically correct example and one that is incorrect. I can't really think of any alternatives to the way the authors have done this though.

It would be great if there were just a few exercises at the end of each chapter, complete with an answer key. That really wouldn't add all that much to the total page count of the book, but would greatly add to its overall usefulness. After all, most of us who actually buy/read this book are students of Chinese who need all the exercises we can get - aren't we?

Lastly, here are a few errors I found in this book:

On page 46, section 2.14 should be cross referenced to chapter 7.

I'm not sure whether this is actually a mistake or not, but hai2shi0 (or) is explained in section 23.4. But there's no reference made to huo4zhe3 at all, which is exceedingly relevant.

In the index, on page 417 xiang3 points to a non-existent 8.1.6. It should be 18.1.6 (page 284).

Wonderful Chinese Grammar Book.......2006-08-14

This is a fantastic book, recommended only for serious learners of Chinese. This is a book you can use during your whole life of learning Chinese. The only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating is the author is so pedantic. The author should use language to speak to real people, not other linguists. However, this is a wonderful, very technical book. I still need a more simpler book on Chinese grammar, but do not regret having this book.

this book is really comprehensive...goes into alot of details and examples....good for those who plan to fine tune their chinese...not good for those who are beginners.

A cheaper alternative.......2005-04-27

I was looking for a Chinese reference book that explained complements and the verb aspect system. My Chinese instructor recommended _A Chinese Grammar for Foreigners_. Most likely, you will find it used (as it is sold to foreigners living in China) at around $20. The book provides examples of sentences in simplified Chinese and English. The layout is not the most ideal, but it provides a systematic approach to understanding the language.

Reads like a medical book.......2004-07-13

I just received this book and gave up reading it after the first few pages. It's definately a reference book but seems to be a thorough reference book. There are many linguistic terms that the reader will also need a dictionary. This makes the book a bit hard to read. It's more for advanced students. I've been studying Chinese for a year and wanted something a bit easier to read without too much detail. I'm going to return this one and try Basic Chinese : A Grammar and Workbook by the same author.

Very Well Organized and Documented Concepts.......2006-03-06

This book is very well written, but is pretty heavy on the linguistic terminology. Nevertheless, I found it quite profound on how all the grammatical concepts are organized and documented. Some of the concepts are even applicable to Mandarin (Putonghua), which makes this great for contrast and comparison to that language. I have yet to find any book that organizes and quantifies grammatical structures in Mandarin; This is ironic considering the instruction of Cantonese seems dissmissed in mainland.

The only one thing that I can fault this book, is the lack of Chinese characters. It uses Yale romanization system to document the concepts, which in and of itself is not bad, but one needs the written Chinese characters in order to understand how a single character can fulfill many grammatical roles. Despite this, this book is invaluable supplement for anyone serious about learning Cantonese.

A comphrensive guide of Cantonese.......2002-04-10

This is a comphrensive guide of Cantonese and well-organized. Authors tried to use the method of analyzing English in writing this book. So I do think that it is good for those who have basic knowledge about English grammar.

The book is also user-friendly. There are many examples which are very up-today. Moreover, the grammar in focus is on bold in the examples that help reader understanding the grammatical point easily.

I should say the book will be better if Chinese characters are provided

This is a good way of learning Chinese, using patterns, and it uses the Yale romanization. It does not contain any characters though.

More than you will ever want to know . . ........2000-05-10

This grammar is well written and comprehensive. It is heavy on linguistic terminology, but the language is altogether descriptive. While primarily beneficial to advanced learners, intermediate Cantonese students could find this helpful as well. Matthews also succeeds in lightening up a deep subject with interesting and fun examples. He also helps readers connect with the meanings of the words and phrases by giving both direct translations and the equivalent meaning side-by-side in these examples. The book is the modern definitive work on the Cantonese language. It teaches a complex subject and is complex itself. I recommend the book for anyone interested in understanding the mechanics of Cantonese, or for anyone wanting to find comparisons with Mandarin.

Excellent book for advanced students.......2000-02-25

Cantonese is traditionally a spoken language, but these days a language must have a standard written grammatical structure in order to survive. Ruth Heller's "Snowflakes" is the best book I've ever had!.......1999-05-12

I first found this book at a yard sale. The original edition goes by a different title, but the illustrations are identical. I am a telemarketer putting myself through school as an art major, and for me this book has kept me sane! I highly recommend it for anyone who has to sit for long periods of time, as the act of coloring her beautiful designs is both soothing and exciting. Definitely a five star book!

My daughter is 12 years old and was never really interested in coloring books, but she picked this book up at a recent book fair an she can't put it down!! She likes to draw and be creative, and this Stained Glass design book allows her to be creative with the wonderful designs. The vellum paper that the designs are printed on gives each page a realistic appearance of glass. It is a great book and I would highly recommend it!!!
