Book Description
This title presents the systematization and description of accumulated knowledge on oceanic fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas. The main fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland and Barents Seas are part of the climatic North Polar Frontal Zone (NPFZ). The work is based on numerous observational data, collected by the authors during special sea experiments directed at the investigation of physical processes and phenomena inside certain parts of the NPFZ and in the northern part of the Bering Sea, on archive data of the USSR Hydrometeocenter and other research institutions, as well as on a wide scientific literature published in Russian and Western editions.
The book contains general information on the oceanic fronts of the Subarctic Seas, brief history of their investigation, state of the knowledge, as well as detailed description of the thermohaline structure of all frontal zones in the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas and of neighboring fronts of Arctic and coastal origin. Special attention is given to the study of the multifrontal character of the NPFZ and of peculiarities of its internal structure at different locations, to the description of diverse oceanic features observed in the NPFZ, as well as to some characteristics of the horizontal and vertical fine structure of hydrophysical fields in the NPFZ. The main features of the northern Bering Sea's summer ecohydrodynamics are investigated with the help of three-dimensional direct and inverse models.

Book Description
This book gives a concise account of the physiology and form of the fish circulatory system. The emphasis is primarily on function, but details of structure have been included. Following a revision of ideas on hemodynamics, attention is focused on the heart as the primary pump in the fish circulatory system. The fine structure and the electrical and ionic events of cardiac myocytes are described and the major events of the cardiac cycle are outlined. The structure of the peripheral vessels then follow and attention is devoted to the circulation in certain special areas such as the gills, the renal portal system, and the secondary blood system. There are also chapters devoted to the blood and the hemopoetic tissues and an account is given of the different types of retial systems that concentrate oxygen or heat in various parts of the body. Following a description of the autonomic nervous system, the circulatory responses to exercise and hypoxia are described. The book concludes with a discussion on the circulation of hagfish and how it illuminates our understanding of the functional and structural evolution of the circulatory system.

Book Description
The book entitled How Golf Clubs Really Work and How to Optimize Their Design, is the first book published that focuses on the golf club and the way that golfers can utilize their specific clubs to achieve better shot control, leading to lower scores for all golfers. The book is the end result of a 10-year, full-time dedicated research effort for co-authors Frank D. Werner and Richard C. Grieg. Both have advanced degrees in aerospace engineering and together have over 90 patents.
The authors have discussed many issues relevant to the game of golf and analyzed the way that different factors play a part in shot making. Chapters are included on optimal face curvature (bulge and roll may be extinct), shaft length and head weight to maximize distance, and the effects of wind drag on club head speed (less than you would expect). In addition, the authors have developed new aiming and shot control techniques that could allow golfers to have better control, hit more fairways and greens, and lower their scores.
The book will provide useful insights for a broad spectrum of golfers from touring pros and teaching professionals to struggling beginners and serious golfers looking to shave a few strokes off their game. By providing an analysis of all that happens from impact until the ball stops, the authors have de-mystified one of the world's greatest games.
Customer Reviews:
Out of date and poor scientific methods.......2003-06-11
Golf club components have changed considerably since this book was published. Many of the conclusions are arrived at through small sample testing (three different lengths of ideal shafts and concluding one of them is ideal) and are inaccurate for today's components. I would recommend anything by Dave Pelz or Tom Wishon rather than this book.
Finally, facts over opinion........2001-09-14
This is a terrific book for those who have been searching for truth about golf clubs. The authors have developed a mathematical model of the golf club and have used computers to analyze innumerable combinations of head speed, center or gravity, club loft, club length, etc. They have come up with an analysis of what is important and what doesn't matter in golf club design. Here's what works for a driver: long (46 inches), low center of gravity, huge club face, unique bulge and roll, and very stiff light shaft. All the other stuff is of no importance, so forget about it. Outstanding.
How golf clubs work, in great detail.......2000-09-19
Werner and Greig have written an excellent book on club design that is suprisingly practical. Each chapter is short and readable. The subject matter is directly applicable to playing golf. Golfers who have read Pelz and Hogan will enjoy the combination of analysis and golfing tips. The graphs and technical information can be difficult to interpert, but aren't essential to understanding the key points.

Unforgivably sloppy........2007-02-15
Even if it were only the spelling errors and typos, I would say that this book is unforgivably sloppy; when writing a reference, especially one detailing trivia, it is essential that one proofreads carefully. One should not have typos such as "The designer of the TWA airpost" (rather than airport) being Eero Saarinen; the "probably pioneer" (rather than probability pioneer) being Blaise Pascal; a Japanese gangster being a Yasuka (rather than a Yakuza, I think); the Aztec god being Quetzaquadl (rather than Quetzalcoatl, unless that's an acceptable alternate spelling or a more recent transliteration of the spelling than I learned, which I suppose is possible); Kim Dae Jung did not win the "Noble" peace prize, but the Nobel; the Korean War Armistice Site is Panmunjon, not Panmunjom; the long wooden Swiss horn is an Alpenhorn, not an Alpinhorn; J.P. Morgan was a banking magnate, not a banking magnet; Lauasia was a "Northern" supercontinent, not a "Nouthern" one; Gneiss is "coarse" grain rock, not "course"; the author of "The Last Days of Pompeii" is Edward Bulwer-Lytton, not Edward Buliver-Litton; the Indians of Southern Florida are the Seminoles, not the Semiloles; Dave Barry is (was) the columnist for the Miami Herald, not Dave Berry; it is, shall we say, somewhat sloppy to say of James Knox Polk that "He was a ran on the platform of 'Manifest Destiny'..."; to say of Theodore Roosevelt that "he was the first president to travel outside the USA during his presidency to dedicate the Panama Canal" leads to the question, "did other presidents travel outside the USA during their presidencies for purposes OTHER than dedicating the Panama Canal?"; the ending year of Victoria's reign (1901) is left out of the table, although it is deducible by the fact that that is the year listed as the beginning of the reign of her successor; Eleanor of Aquitaine was "The Crusader Queen", not "The Cursader Queen"; Oberon is the king of the fairies, not the king of the faireis; the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984 was Walter Mondale, not Walter Monday; Marberry vs. Madison was declared unconstitutional, not "declaired" unconstitutional; the Territory bought from Mexico was the Gadsden Purchase, not the Gadsden Purchas; the Montana Freemen is a Militia, not a Malitia (although I'm sure their opponents consider the "mal" prefix appropriate); the 20th century Secretary of State from Maine was Edmund Muskie, not Edwin; the nickname of the sports teams from Wake Forest University is the Demon Deacons, not the Deamon Decons; the Senator from Texas is Phil Gramm, not Phil Grahm; Amelia Earhart was a pilot, not a pilor (whatever that may be); "Swashbucklers" is one word, not two (Swash Bucklers); Mount McKinley's native name is Denali, not Danili; the Battle of Leyte Gulf is "The largest sea battle in history; off the coast of the Philippines" NOT "The largest sea battle in history of the coast of the Philippines"; but the biggest error I found, the most truly unforgivable because it was unarguably an error of fact and not a typo or misspelling or grammatical error (as though those errors in a reference book were acceptable) was the identification of Alan Alda as "the Same Time Next Year & Catch-22 actor"; Alan Alda DID appear in "Same Time Next Year", but the Alan in Catch-22 was Alan ARKIN". Alan Alda did NOT appear in Catch-22, not even in a minor role.
Some may claim that this is picking nits, but how can you trust the information in a reference book that is so sloppily edited and proofread? It's ridiculous.
Decent , not great.......2006-12-05
Every Jeopardy winner wants to cash in , and by and large this is a decent volume, but there are too many errors that I caught for it to be truly reliable. I wouldn't use a question from it without checking one other source. Clearly not all of these were carefully checked.
Can't trust this.......2006-12-03
This book purports to offer information necessary to do well on game shows such as Jeopardy!, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and so on. So of all things, such a source must be RELIABLE. This book is not reliable at all. It is fraught with so many errors that it's really not worth buying. Apparently Mr. Ferrill couldn't find anyone willing to edit his book. I could enumerate the errors that I found after carefully looking through the text, but I don't see what that would accomplish. Others have listed some errors that they found from quickly skimming it. That should tell you something.
Great reference, especially for game shows!.......2006-08-08
I used this book to help me prepare for appearances on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and "The Weakest Link" and also to study for the "Jeopardy!" exam (which I passed). One of my questions on "The Weakest Link" was even something I had specifically seen in the book the night before the taping! I have since used the book as a handy reference numerous times.
I would perhaps ruefully suggest the addition of a certain piece of (in my opinion, obscure) information that was my downfall on "Millionaire" - that the lead singer of The Sugarcubes was Bjork. For the record, the "Millionaire" audience didn't know that either.
I highly recommend this book and am grateful to the author for his work in painstakingly cataloging so many facts.
Great concept... poor execution........2006-04-24
I bought the book to prepare (cram, really) with about three weeks' lead time for my Jeopardy appearance. I can't say enough about the value of a reference like this when you have limited time. My friend and I used it over lunch and flipped through different categories each day. In turn, the things we went over gave us a springboard to look into other sources.
Remember, too, that if you're on a game show you most likely won't get questions so cut-and-dried as they appear in the book. ("Here's a fact; here's its location or date.") If you're studying with someone else, have them make up questions that use the info from the book.
The most helpful parts of the book involved frequently recalled figures and events of countries or eras. If you're asked about a Norwegian composer, you'll most likely answer, "Grieg." The author focuses on this level of information so that you know no more and no less than what you'll need in this situation.
But what good is easily accessible information if it's just plain WRONG? Other reviewers have noted the errors they found; for me, it came when he listed the director of Sunset Boulevard as Cecil B. DeMille... and then listed it correctly (Billy Wilder) on the very next page. And the director of Scarface: Jonathan Demme? Please. These are bush league facts that many non-trivia-geeks could recall at a moment's notice. Unacceptable.
I also noted some slightly odd choices for lists of "notables." Maybe it's just my perspective, but in some cases I'd never heard of a particular film or book that the author listed as a major work.
It's not expensive, so I'd recommend the purchase. However, keep your skepticism handy.
Customer Reviews:
For the compulsive test taker...........2002-05-03
I'm sorry, but I just simply love this book. Maybe it is because I am a compulsive test taker. Maybe it is because I get so little chance in this society to demonstrate what I know. Perhaps it is some minor validation that graduating from high school and college with honors wasn't a "fluke." Then again, perhaps it is merely because I scored in the "excellent" category on it's battery of tests. In any case, I highly recommend it to any closet "cognoscentes" out there.
The tests cover a comprehensive range of subjects: American History; World History; Civics; Geography; Art and Architecture; Music, Myth and Religion; Quotes, Phrases and Aphorisms; American Literature; World Literature; Life Science; Physical Science; Technology; Mathematics and Economics; and Current Events. Don't worry, everyone has at least one "blind spot"- the other tests even it out.
Come to think of it, I know why I love this book- it is because I know that none of the bosses that I've ever had could even manage to score a "fair"....
A great find.......2000-08-08
I was looking in the library for a book that would keep me intelligent between school semesters, and when I found this book, I was greatly pleased. After I brought it home, my father also discovered in and entirly enjoyed taking each of the 14 tests. I not only kept my brain fresh, I learned some too!

book review.......2007-02-17
This book is full of vintage-like bird illustrations and is just wonderful for collage and other projects!
Great Collection.......2000-05-04
Bird clips are from Victorian sources. Some kitsch - birds dressed like people - others quite good. Like the other Dover CD-ROMS, you can pull the images off the disk without installing them on your HD.
