Incredible book.......2007-03-08

This book rocked my world the first time I read it. I was in high school, and its protrayal of decadence and broken innocence shocked me. The characters were incredibly realistic to me. The behavior of Khaster and Tayven throughout the entire book reminded me of somewhat similar situations between people in real life. A dissolute man who turns to night life for solace is a very sympathetic character to me. So too is the experienced man, who is forced into ruin by bad choices. However be aware, the decadence of the Magravands is protrayed strongly through the use of gay relationships. If a person is upset about such things, The Crown of Silence would perhaps not be the best read. As I said, I first read this a few years ago in high school, then ended up giving the hardback edition to someone else. Several months after that, I was struck with a longing to read this incredibly compelling work again. So I thought about getting another copy. I had already read the book at least a couple times, but I wanted to read it again so bad, I went ahead and bought it. I have read it several times since. It is a simply awesome book.

Amazing piece of Fantasy Literature..........2005-06-13

This is a great sequel to the first of this Trilogy. Constantine has a talent for painting the landscapes of Magravandias in your head with precision and detail. I really enjoyed how Constantine told the Story of Shane and tied it into the big picture. Excellent book go out and buy all three, its worth the money.

Uneven, with very good moments.......2004-02-26

This book is so frustrating -- there are moments that are really very good. It's a classic journey of self-discovery (individual and group) and Constantine is a good writer at the sentence level. But, as has been mentioned here, the plot and character development is very uneven. All in all, it feels like it needed another few hours of baking.

Choppy waters with petulant characters.......2004-01-08

I really wanted to like this book more. There were some good ideas but whenever it started to get interesting it would digress into petulant sulky inner dialogs or catty exchanges between the characters. It has a strong self-discovery theme but sadly that seems wasted as the characters never really seem to evolve, only switch who is their new best-friend.

Constantine's writing flows beautifully and there are some wonderful images but any connection I felt to the characters was tenuous at best. By the end of the book the only character I cared to know more about was the indirect antagonist, Valraven Palindrake, and even he comes off as the bad boy in the clique that everyone either secretly loves or openly loves to hate.

If you are into soap operas then you may find some enjoyment in the characters and story but for my taste everyone was just a bit of a drama queen.

Ther eis one word for it - "BAD".......2003-01-24

This book was simply bad. It is disappointing after the first book. Crown of Silence is laborious , tiresome and drags on for ever. I don't think the author had any clarity about the story at this point. I wish I had read the reviews before I started reading the book. Crown of Silence was not essential to the story and could have been skipped.

Tibetan Simpson here.......2000-03-06

This book is less entartaining than his other ones, but in fact it is not intended as a substitute, but as a complement for the other ones. We havefor instance the poetic description of skinhead bully and the clash in the pub, a typical Simpson story, multiplicity of climbing, and the complete study of Simpson's face and the consequences of using his mimics. Apart from these Simpsonites, the book itself is a treatise on Tibet, once a peaceful, free country - the Roof of the World. Read that and understand what you did not want to know. It would be fun to read this book before or after seeing "Seven Years in Tibet".

Enough with the death already.......1998-09-14

Simpson's climbing adventures continues. This book gave me a little bit of deja vu. Simpson philosophizes about senseless violence when almost getting into a barroom fight. This is a rehash of a similar violent brawl that occurs in "This Game of Ghosts." Simpson reanalyzes why people are prone to violence yet again. Simpson gives an account of a climb of Cho Oyo in Tibet. He philosophizes constantly about his decision to climb in repressed Tibet. This book is more a account of Simpson's feelings about climbing Cho Oyo then a story of actual mountaineering. It seems to me that Simpson said what he had to say in his second novel and this book just retells it in a slightly different context. The second part of this book deals with a trip Simpson takes to Peru. Yet again he philosophizes about violence, cruelty and seemingly senseless death and focuses less on the actual climbing. Some of these chapters have odd topics and I'm not sure what he was trying to say, although I found them interesting. Some of the dialogue between characters seem fictional. He gets into deep conversations with other climbers about politics etc and uses words I don't think a climber in a typical situation would use. Unless he was tape recording these conversations, I don't think all the quotes used were warranted. He's also not as witty as his previous book. I recommend that you stop reading his stuff after his second book which I think is really quite good.

Great adventures and also disqueting.......1998-07-13

Simpson continues his climbing adventures but delves a little deeper into his own conscience this time, reflecting on his decision to climb Cho Oyu with the brutality of the Chinese in Tibet uppermost on his mind; and from the summit of Peru's Huascaran, looks down on the barrenness of the once bustling 18,000-strong town of Yungay, devastated by the earthquake-induced landslide of May 1970. This is a more hypocrisy-accepting Simpson, and for this and his own new awareness of the plight of Tibet, well worth the read.

I do believe this book speaks of all the possibilities in life, the questions asked about fate and destiny, the young mind trying to understand the world and the soul searching for the meaning of life. Brief yet informative.......2004-07-08

When I was first told that this book was required for my college English class, I thought that because of the title, the cover, and the spiral binding, this book would be another one of those dull textbooks. I definitely thought wrong. Inside this book, you will discover a world of information along with color photographs, real life examples of how writing is important, and the most up-to-date MLA information including proper citation methods, proper essay formats, proper punctuation, and proper syntax. Now that I am out of that first semester of English, I still view this book as valuable reference material due to it's comprehensive information on today's modern writing techniques. If you enjoy both reading and writing, I would strongly encourage you to purchase this book.

We received the book on a Saturday and read it cover to cover that evening! My husband laughed so hard that the couch shook! As we moved from page to page we chuckled, smiled , and laughed til tears came ....Leigh Rubin is a comic genius!. There are many levels to his insighful, powerful cartoons. The various levels of humor make his books appealing to every person...and also make the books fun to read over and over again. We see different aspects of the 'joke' with each reading..making the purchase a real bargain ! I encourage you to try this one ...and then expand your "Rubes" library...we certainly have ! :)
