Book Description
This classic book is accepted internationally as the standard treatment of the mechanical properties of biological fluids, solids, tissues and organs. It is used widely as both a reference and textbook in this rapidly-growing field. Biomechanics presents a general outline of the discipline, with applications to bioengineering, physiology, medicine and surgery. The second edition reflects the broad advances that have been made in this field during the past decade, and adds numerous new topics. References have been brought up to date, and the widely-praised emphasis on formulating and solving problems has been strengthened with numerous new problems. This book begins with a unique historical introduction to the field of biomechanics, followed by a vital chapter which relates the definitions and vocabulary of applied mechanics to biological tissues. These tools are then used to treat in detail the mechanical properties of blood, including blood cells and vessels. The remaining chapters discuss the viscoelastic properties of biological fluids and solids, as well as the mechanics of muscle, bone and connective tissue.

The Bible.......2007-02-10
Professor Fung is considered the father of bioengineering and founder of biomechanics.
Winner of Timoshenko and Poiseulle medals he's an Engineer that started to study physiology when his mother was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1957.
I am trained as a Medical Doctor and Molecular Biologist but being the son of a Professor of Civil Engineering made me understand the importance that structural engineering has in Medicine and Biology.
Now I am interested in nuclear matrix and lamins(as they are connected to aging phenomena) so I am training myself in Biomechanics, and I found that this book is the strating point.
I recommend this book to all Structural Engineers,Biomedical Engineers, MDs and Cellular and Molecular Biologists that want to understand this field.
A Masterpiece in Biomechanics!.......2002-12-02
What I would say is not a comprehensive review of what the great book talks, but just telling you a truth: if you have engineering and mathamatics background and wanna combine your background to do research in physiology, Fung's book is absolutely a must-buy. This book is profound, but it is actually rooted in nearly all fields of biomechanics research.
It is a conclusion for biomechanics research till 1980's; also this book is a truly great reference for all current researchers who are interested in biomedical research in point of view of a mathamatician and engineer.
Simply the Best.......2000-06-16
Fung takes a continuum mechanics approach to the principles that underly the human body. All of the ideas in the text are backed up with solid research and easy to understand equations, as well as text descriptions. Fung is also responsible for researching many of the ideas of biomechanics, and so, the text takes on a personal view not found in other books. All in all, the best book out there for introductory biomechanics, but one that you will use for the rest of your life.

Book Description
Entering its third edition, the bestselling Handbook of Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields is a definitive reference for researching bioeffects of static, low-, and high-frequency fields. It presents a well-rounded perspective on the biological effects of electromagnetic (EM) fields, authored by active contributors to the field with a wide variety of interests and backgrounds, approaches, and interpretations. The Handbook incorporates up-to-date data, results, and discussions-many based on studies performed since the 1995 publication of the previous edition-into two cohesive volumes. The first focuses on bioengineering and biophysical aspects, including molecular-level mechanisms. It contains new material describing the physics, engineering, and chemistry aspects of electromagnetic fields to explain their interactions with biological systems. The second concentrates on biological and medical aspects, including physiological effects, medical applications, and exposure standards. It examines some of the latest applications EM fields, particularly for medical treatment and diagnostics. Improved cross-referencing across both volumes facilitates the association of interrelated concepts. The Handbook of Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, Third Edition forms a comprehensive, yet accessible source leading to a greater knowledge of electromagnetic hazards, potential applications of EM fields, and a better understanding of biological processes.

Updated and Expanded Third Edition.......2007-01-07
While the human body (and of course animal bodies) are biological in nature, they have a strong electrical contant in the way that nerves pass messages and the way that the brain thinks. It is only lately, however, that the interaction between electromagnetic fields and the body's own electromagnetic activities have begun to be studied from a rigorous standpoint.
Now in its third edition, this two volume set reflects the latest research in the field. It is an exhaustive look into the field with articles from a wide collection of researchers currently working in the field. Virtually all of the articles reflect research that has been done in the years since the last edition was published in 1995.
While this includes such subjects as the use of cell phones and living under high voltage transmission lines, it also includes the use of EM fields in medical treatments, exposure limits, physiological effects and more. This book continues to be the definitive book on the subject.

The Physics of Pulsatile Flow.......2002-02-24
This is a well-written book by an expert in the field of biomathmatics and cardiovascular dynamics. I am impressed by the self-contained contents of the book and the flow of thoughts. The book introduces the fundamental physical principles and fluid mechanics before embarking on the subjects of steady flow in tubes and pulsatile flow in rigid and elastic tubes. The author leads the readers smoothly into the interesting regimes of vascular tree structures and their optimization, and the wave propagation and reflection phenomena. The relevant end-of-chapter problems are good additional sources to recapture the intended message from the text, as well as learning about other applications. Students and professionals in math, science, engineering and cardiovascular dynamics will find this text a good addition to their reading list.

A work of art, a classic, February 11, 2002.......2002-02-20
Professor Zamir's new book is an exceptionally strong, beautiful and persuasive treatise on the physics of flow through tubes and tree-shaped paths, in steady and unsteady flow. This work is fundamental physics. The mathematical treatment is authoritative and very accessible. The concepts apply not only to blood circulation, for which most of the empirical data are carefully documented, but also to other tree-shaped flows, from physiology and geophysics to optimized piping networks in mechanical and civil engineering.
This book has many strong features, all packed into a concise (no nonsense) and very well illustrated format. The issue of whether blood flow is newtonian or viscoelastic is explained from first principles: each model is valid under specific circumstances, which are identified. Very strong is the treatment of pulsatile flows through elastic tubes. Such flows consist of waves that propagate through the circulatory system, and large numbers of waves that are reflected by flow obstacles (e.g., bifurcations).
Important is that in pulsatile flow through a tree structure, the many wave reflections help the flow. They maximize the overall flow access from the heart to the entire body. This conclusion of "optimization" of flow structure is important in physics and biology in general.
Detailed measurements of the architecture of the arterial tree are condensed in this book. Graphic summaries of this architecture (e.g., Fig. 6.8.5) are so well done that they will become textbook material in the near future.
In sum, this is a masterful and inspiring book on the most important class of flows in physics, biology and engineering-flows with purpose. The structure of such flows is optimized in space and in time.
A very informative book.......2002-01-08
As a researcher with expertise in electrical engineering and specialization in the fields of digital signal and image processing "The Physics of Pulsatile Flow" was a big help in quickly understanding the basics of pulsatile flow in general. In particular, I needed to model the wall velocity of blood vessels as a function of the velocity of a viscous fluid pumped through that vessel and found a good first approach for solving this problem in chapter 5 called "pulsatile flow in an elastic tube". The references given throughout the book are also valuable to gain further insights.
I liked most that after a few minutes (or hours depending on your mathematical level of understanding) of reading, the basic principles and their solution became very clear. As we all know it is easy enough to write complicated things in a complicated manner - much more challenging is the task of using clear and easy to understand formulations. This has been masterly accomplished here by Professor Zamir and I congratulate him on this informative and instructive book. Furthermore, Dr. Zamir very quickly answered my email about a specific question of mine that was still remaining after reading the book. I really appreciated that!
An excellent book for moving boundary problems & blood flow.......2001-07-20
The Physics of Pulsatile Flow is a great introduction to the area of biofluid mechanics. Especially to those who have to solve moving boundary value problems in blood flow. It is extremely well writen so even a beginer will be able to understand fully every concept. It begins with the basic concepts & equations of fluid mechanics(Navier - Stokes, chapters 1-2)it goes on with Poiseuille flow (chapter 3), Pulsatile flowin a Rigid tube (chapter 4) and the most important chapters "Pulsatile flow in an elastic tube" (chapter 5) and "Wave reflections" (chapter 6) which has to do with waves in arterial trees. The book also presents the approach of the solution of blood flow in a rigid tube with an elliptic cross section. I didn't regreted the money I paid for it. It centerly worth it's price.

Book Description
This book describes the physical microenvironment of living organisms. It presents a simplified discussion of heat and mass transfer models and applies them to exchange processes between organisms and their surroundings. Emphasis is placed on teaching the student how to calculate actual transfer rates, rather than just studying the principles involved. Numerous examples are provided to illustrate many of the principles, and problems are included at the end of each chapter to help the student develop skills in using the equations and to gain an understanding of modern environmental biophysics. The book is an engineering approach to environmental biology.
Customer Reviews:
A dense book for a complex topic.......2005-10-03
Campbell is thorough in his approach to biophysical analysis of multiple environmental scenarios. As a text book, it is fairly dense and provides hints on how to solve specific problems throughout the text. However, finding those hints is sometimes fairly tricky. The equations presented are the latest version of the equations, but some may produce skewed answers in extreme condtions. Living in interior Alaska, some of Campbell's formulas and tables just don't cut it for winter and high-latitude conditions. All in all a solid book though, despite it's initial density and sometimes insufficient clarity.
excellent and unique update in the subject.......2000-06-28
This text is an excellent companion for anybody dealing with transfers of energy and water in the biosphere, particularly at the plant-canopy level. Badly needed since the only comparable textbook is Monteith & Unsworth - a little outdated and more physically based than this one, which is more bio-oriented and includes current remote sensing use. Excellent reference, and well organized course textbook. There are some mistakes but I know of a second edition appearing this year which will correct them.

Book Description
In these essays Heinz von Foerster discusses some of the fundamental principles that govern how we know the world and how we process the information from which we derive that knowledge. Included are path- breaking articles concerning the principles of computation in neural nets (1967), the definition of self-organizing systems (1960), the nature of cognition (1970), as well as recent expansions on these themes (e.g. "How recursive is communication," 1993). Working with Norbert Wiener, Warren McCullough, and others in the 1960s and 1970s, von Foerster was one of the founders of the science of cybernetics, which has had profound effects both on modern systems theory and on the philosophy of cognition. At the Biological Computer Laboratory at the University of Illinois he produced the first parallel computers and contributed to many other developments in the theory of computation and cognition.

Dance Imagery for Technique and Performance

Book Description
Written by a physicist with professional dance training, Physics and the Art of Dance explains how dancers can achieve better, safer performances through an understanding of physics in motion. Using simple, non-technical terms, Kenneth Laws combines his knowledge of both physics and dance to describe how the laws of gravity, momentum, and energy affect dancing bodies. The book explores the natural laws that govern the subtleties of balance, the techniques of leaps and pirouettes, and the impressive lifts and turns executed by ballet partners. Finally, Laws offers insight into two current discussions in the dance world--the effect of body size on ballet technique, and the relationship between science and the art of dance. Beautiful, original stop-action photographs by Martha Swope, along with clear diagrams, illustrate the concepts described in the text. Plus, an intriguing "puzzler" at the beginning of each chapter provides an engaging entree into the topics presented. For those who want a more advanced understanding of the physics, extensive appendices are provided. This new book combines the best features of Laws's widely acclaimed The Physics of Dance and Physics, Dance, and the Pas de Deux by Laws and Cynthia Harvey. Its expert application of the basic principles of physics to the art of dance will be an invaluable resource for dancers and dance instructors and will open a new level of appreciation for lovers of the form. It will also appeal to physicists who seek to include the arts in their scientific pursuits.
Customer Reviews:
Sara Michelle .......2006-05-30
I am a teenaged ballet student. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It helped me in my study of ballet in so many ways: understanding, balancing, executing movements, creating the illusions, improving my technique, and on and on. I love how the book is written, because it is easy to understand even if you are not a Physicist (but it also has Scientific material and some pages with the math and physics illustrated in equations, etc., as well). The chapters engage you with a question or puzzle that you have to solve. This makes you want to hurry up to get to the end of each chapter to see if your guesses were correct. You will learn how to create the illusion of floating in your grand jetes. You will learn how dancers suspend their movement that receives a 'gasp' from the audience that happens whenever something is held beyond what seems possible or expected. It is a book I needed in order to get beyond my limits as a dancer.
As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need........2005-11-21
The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

A good idea, but overly equation-oriented.......2004-10-13
This book represents a noble attempt to put together biological and medical applications for introductory physics courses. This is not just a good idea but really a necessity now that many students in these classes are pre-medical (at least in the US). Certainly it represents an excellent source of problem material for those who want to create an intro physics course that has relevance to future doctors and biologists.
Unfortunately, most of the examples are "set-ups" in which a biological system is used as a wrapper for an equation the students are expected to have memorized. For example, when discussing gravity, the book has a problem on a diving hawk (hawks dive by essentially going into free-fall), in which the students are expected to use (1/2) a t-squared, but for which the students are not expected to estimate the effects of air resistance or assess the realism of the physical situation. I.e., the book contains standard plug-and-chug physics problems in biomedical clothing.
It would be nice to see a book that helps students to learn, on their own, how to identify the relevant physics in a biomedical situation. I can't fault this book overly, since there are essentially no examples of what I am looking for, in either the physics or the bio textbook worlds, save for Steven Vogel's outstanding Biomechanics book (highly recommended).
Well structured book.......2003-10-27
This book has a good content structure for anyone who want to study biomedical applications of physics. For biophysics and first year medical students, this book used in conjunction with a standard calculus or algebra physics book, will be a big help on a better understanding and application of Physics.

Read the book, now what do I do with the info?.......2006-09-12
This book has information about the sacred Solfeggio tones. These were supposedly ancient, at least from the time of the Jews. They were hidden and/or suppressed by the Catholic church. The author tells us about the frequencies of these tones and what they are supposed to mean. But what do you do with this stuff?
The book is not really a solid reference so you are unlikely to need to read it twice. There really aren't any exercises here so? So we get to know that the author is an expert on this stuff but what about the rest of us? There is no place to go and nothing to study outside of what is written here. That does not satisfy someone looking for more that just some facts on paper. Ok, he does mention the work of Dr. Emoto to make use feel good about loving ourselves. But beyond that not much else to work with here.
My advice, get the CD on the Solfeggio tones themselves. If you are involved in any type of alternative (energy) healing then save up some money and get a set of tuning forks made to this frequency. Then you can find out what they can do.
WOW! to Horowitz's Walk on Water.......2006-07-05
Walk on Water is a book that is packed with some of the most amazing and wonderful truths of all time. It explains the science behind the power of thoughts, words, prayer, music, and water (yes, water), and galvanizes the reader to really watch what they think and say (and drink).
Most people innately understand that negative thoughts will affect things negatively and positive thoughts will affect things positively, but Dr. Horowitz gives a very sound and clear explanation of why and how that is so in this book. You will learn that when you say a heartfelt "I love you," or "Have a great day" to someone, it really does affect their mind, body, and life in a positive way.
For those of you that have been on the receiving end of a physician's negative diagnosis and experienced the immediate fearful impact on your heart or have a child that has been labeled dyslexic, this book will set you free from those negative labels.
From the tiniest part of a strand of DNA to an atom whirling in the outer reaches of the universe, there is an intelligent, loving design that has humankind's best interests at heart - Walk on Water beautifully and clearly proves this and encourages its readers to take full advantage of these great truths available to them.
Walk on Water.......2006-07-04
This is a must read for anyone who is searching for concept on how life works it begins with oneself
A remarkable guide to the constructive fundamentals of life.......2006-06-09
Walk On Water by Leonard G. Horowitz is a remarkable guide to the constructive fundamentals of life. Offering readers an informative perspective on such issues as the "Perfect Circle of Sound" and how the Creator is using it to promote healing for the self in loving service; proof of a "Love frequency" and how to use it; evidence that DNA microscopically mirrors the double helix wave form of the cosmos; the "Miracle frequency" for manifesting matter, and so much more, Walk On Water knowledgeably compiles a complete and thorough explanation of the many phenomenal intricacies of life, and also addresses the profoundly simple meaning of life for optimal and active living. Walk On Water is very highly recommended for anyone searching for a comprehensive and complete guide to the holistic perception of life, love, divinity, the universe.
