Best starter book I have found for the small cruiser........2007-06-05
I was moving up from just playing around on a lake in an old 18 ft deck boat, to purchase a 26 ft cabin cruiser for bay and ILW. Knowing there was a lot I needed to know to make this transition, I started reading books. This was the fourth book I bought, and the most useful by far. It clearly explained things I needed to know before making a boat purchase, and afterwards gave me the practical info I needed to stay out of trouble. It is no substitue for basic boating safety course material, but adds depth to the reasons behind the rules (and the likelyhood that the other guy is following them). For me, just its practical explainations of how boats handle in wind when docking was worth the price alone. By far the best book I have seen for someone buying a boat in the small cruiser (22 - 35 foot) range.
Too much technical, not enough practical information........2005-09-11
I am a beginner with a new (used) boat. I expected a book a "how to" book on getting started - a book for beginners with basic safety, operating, and mechanical information.
Though this book gives some great technical information about how boats float, the different types of hulls and drive mechanisms, how to handle some difficult docking and other situations, it is not a book for a novice.
If you're just getting started I would look elsewhere.
Getting Started in Powerboating.......2005-09-06
This book is very informative for the beginning boater. It expresses new concepts in terms the novice can understand. It covers all the basics and some advanced elements.
perfect book for power boating.......2005-08-22
If you love power boating, this book is for you!
An Excellent Classic Powerboating Book.......2004-04-13
An excellent book that gives you a basic understanding of hull types, engine types, boat opeartion, docking, anchoring, safety and more. I still refer to this book on a regular basis. It should be one of the books on your shelf if you are serious about being a good, safe Captain.

Great Arabic Learning Tool.......2007-01-10
The exercises in the book and on the CD's are good. It's packs in a lot of very useful information. Great resource/tool to learn the arabic language, both written and spoken!
Mastering Arabic.......2007-01-09
This is a language book. It contains 2 CDs that are very high sound quality which is necessary in order to understand exactly how the sounds in a foreign language very different from English should be spoken. It begins with learning the alphabet and continues to progress through words (vocabulary) and then to sentence structure. It then continues to familiar phrases useful to one who might be attempting to use their Arabic in a real life situation (like when traveling in the Middle East). This is not just a business travel "crutch" for emergencies; it seems much better than that. I have worked in several other books on Arabic and they all seem to leave something to be desired but this one (with its CDs) seems to pretty well overcome the other's shortcomings (so far). This is really a little too early to tell since it will be several years before its real benefits are known to me.
I am a typical Mid-west American with some interest in languages and I have studied Spanish, German, with some Hebrew and Russian exposure. I thought I would tackle Arabic because it is an entirely different language in structure and speech than any other language that I have studied. I am 68 also. This is an adventure.
There is also another book to complement this book that looks to be worthwhile. It is called Arabic - Verbs & Essentials of Grammar. It is written by the same authors and appears to be a nice complement to studying Arabic.
A job well done by Wightwick and Gaafar.......2006-11-10
"Mastering Arabic" is a bit of a misnomer, because this is more of an introductory book, but for anyone who has ever even started to learn another language, the format will be familiar. Basically, each chapter presents a concept, such as countries and nationalities or numbers, offers several different exercises to help one master it, ranging from reading handwriten Arabic to writing and answering simple descriptions and questions. Additionally, in each of the first few chapters, the authors present a few different letters and their forms. I began learning Arabic with a book specifically about this, so, the first few chapters of this book were a bit of a review, but the authors still kept it interesting. Also, for people new to Arabic, this book will help them learn the script without being overwhelmed as they go. Finally, the CDs that come with this book are a great asset. Learning a language is hard on its own, but it can be harder without any audible frame of reference. In each chapter, there are activities designed to fit with the CDs, and they help a lot. This is a high quality text and great for people new to Arabic, but, to be clear, it will not help you 'master' Arabic.
Very good job.......2006-09-05
Overall it's very good. I have only done just over a half of lessons.
From the textbooks I attempted it's probably the best.
This will give you some good basics, you won't "master" Arabic with it.
There's more positive than negative sides. It is a bit hard for someone who never taught himself a foreign language, especially non-European
and without any help from a native speaker/teacher.
CD's or cassetes are a must, you can't learn Arabic without learning hearing the sounds of it.
Negative sides:
1) Some handwritten exercises are confusing. Not enough focus is given to decipher the script.
You need a native speaker's/teacher's advice on that.
At least there should be a printed version for each handwritten version
2) As other reviewers mentioned, the transcription was abandoned too early on. It should be used throughout.
Some complex cases of how to read hamza over yaa' and waw in the middle of the word is not explained.
I also noticed some cases, when diacritics were used incorrectly, like fathatan is written over a letter preceding alif, not over alif itself.
3) The vocabulary is too small, all words used in text should be used in vocab. There should also be Arabic-English,
not just English-Arabic vocabulary.
4) Some discrepancies of recordings not matching the text ("What King did" chapter).

Excellent.......2007-08-20
This book in conjunction with the more "technical" Writing Arabic by T.F. Mitchell, is awesome for learning to write and read the ruq3a script used in Arabic handwriting. The reason I haven't given it the full 5 stars is that it doesn't have extensive handwriting examples for recognition practice, but if used in conjunction with Writing Arabic by T.F. Mitchell this is solved, as there is quite a few handwritten examples at the end of the latter. Writing Arabic by T.F. Mitchell is indeed very costly, $60, but shop around, I got mine almost new for $20.
Just what I wanted.......2006-10-02
I've been studying Arabic for a little while now and although I know the alphabet and can read what's printed in my textbooks, I still have a lot of trouble making out handwriting and caligraphy. This simple book is exactly what I was looking for. It takes you through each of the letters showing their typewritten form as well as their handwritten counterparts in all their variations. It has visual instructions to help practice making the letters and practical advice about the easiest way to make the letter form. It also works through the various ways to combine the letter forms as well as that thing where the letters all stack up. It has exercises to help you practice reading handwritting as you learn the new forms with real handwriting examples. I can't read the handwriting examples at the end of the book yet, but am confident I'll be able to when I work through the book. I'm very glad to have this book.
Quick guide to deciphering mysterious handwriting.......2006-02-08
Many of us just want to learn the Arabic writing system well enough to recognize names, read identity cards, make out signs/placards, and use our electronic dictionaries on occasion. There are many excellent short guides to the Arabic writing system, but they focus on naskh printed style, not the ruq'a cursive handwriting. Trying to just guess the handwriting from a basic knowledge of the printed form is almost impossible, as the differences are significant and at times surprising. "Mastering Arabic Script" is just the ticket. Especially highly recommended for training military police, screeners and interrogators. ["A Dictionary of Muslim Names," by Salahuddin Ahmed is also strongly recommended for the same audience.]
116 pages of well-organized material contrasting the easily read printed form with the initially hard to recognize handwritten equivalent. Step-by-step workbook style guides to learning to write in the proper sequences. Almost pocket-sized, so you can keep it handy. Too bad a fold-up double-sided plastic laminated summary card could not have been included.
A few more pages with an extended master passage handwritten in several different hands would have been worthwhile. The exercises including photos of commercial signs are excellent. The authors left us motivated and wanting more.
The frustration of not being able to read those demonstration placards and signs we see in short news slips and news photos every single day quickly becomes a thing of the past. [Well, almost. Nothing is quite that easy in the Middle East.]

Very good book.......2005-06-22
This book is a nice companion book for someone learning Arabic and it explains some basic Arabic grammar an a way that is easy to understand, and the lay out of this small book is nice. I also like the cover. I use it when I tutor If you are looking for an all-encompassing grammar book, this is not it, but it is a very good start for someone to have decent grammar. It covers many bases.

Need a review but not bad compared to other Arabic textbooks.......2006-10-03
I only give it 3 stars because of its flaws but I find this book the only one, which is usable to an extent if you learn Modern Standard Arabic on your own.
Considerations for a review:
Needs an Arabic-English dictionary.
English-Arabic dictionary should include all the words used in the text, it's a common practice with language textbooks, otherwise it is the actual exercise. The author says, you need to get a dictionary but the words should be supplied, anyway.
Romanisation is stopped too early. At least, the vocabulary should have it.
Since the hand-written Arabic is not the focus of this book, the hand-written exercise should provide a guide on what is written. I think, the author is not aware of the difficulty of deciphering hand-written Arabic by a European learner.
The ads and newspaper article exercises are also a waste of time, lots of guessing, not learning.
I have experience in learning foreign languages, including Chinese and Japanese but Arabic seems much more difficult, since it's much harder to look up words dictionary and finding the right form of that word or using a form to get the dictionary form, the diglossia and varieties of Arabic, so it would be good to make more explanations to exercises, so that learners don't struggle but concentrate on learning. So grammar notes could have more romanisation and translation as well so that a learner could focus on the grammar, not on reading or looking up words.

With The Headless Bust, Edmund Gravel and the Bahum Bug from Gorey's "Dispirited and Distasteful" Christmas tale, The Haunted Tea-Cosy, have returned to usher in the New Year. The story, told in verse, takes up just after Edmund's riotous party. He and the Bug are whisked off to a faraway village for another round of strange and vaguely eerie encounters. Fans of Gorey's distinctive ink drawings, tending toward the well-dressed and slightly mad, will not be disappointed--they make for an engrossing book with or without the accompanying deliciously odd text. ("Reversing at a tango tea/ In Snogg's Casino-not-on-Sea/ L-- tripped and cried, 'I am afraid/ They tampered with the marmalade.'") There is also plenty to be had for aficionados of the mysterious little rituals, mentioned nonchalantly, that seem so logical to the inhabitants of Gorey's bizarre world--the Bandage Folder's Ball being a head-cocking highlight. The Headless Bust is perfect for a winter's read by the fireplace, just before drifting off into fruitcake-induced dreams. --Ali Davis
Book Description
As we wander off with Edward Gorey into the next millennium our reasons for being here are far from clear. Nevertheless, the master craftsmen is at his best . . Customer Reviews:
Dark humor and delightful drawings.......2007-03-29
If you enjoy Edward Gorey's work, you'll enjoy this. Both drawings and text have been crafted with exquisite precision and wit.
Not for the weak of heart.......2004-01-17
The following facts should be made clear immediately. There is not, in spite of the title, a single bust in this book (to say nothing of headlessness). There is not even, I might go so far as to say, much of a plot. But what there is lives in superb Gorey glory. The best way to approach this book is to consider it a sequel to Gorey's "The Haunted Tea-Cosy" (which actually did include a cosy of spectral proportions). Our heroes, Mr. Edmund Gravel and the Bahhumbug have finished saying goodbye to the last of their guests for the evening. Ah, but a creature soon comes to spirit our protagonists, "from place to place, where there is shame, also disgrace". The story uses such delightful and little heard words as "druthers" and "aubergine" while telling the lightly lamentable tales of a host of people. Each situation is privy to a little four line poem in the style of a-b-a-b. The subtitle of this book was "A Melancholy Meditation on the False Millennium" and by the book's end both the Bahhumbug and Mr. Gravel sit, drink their tea, and think about the new Millennium (looks of horror clearly plastered on their faces). This being one of Gorey's later works, we can't criticize it too severely. Mr. Gorey had a style all his own and there is a plot here, buried as it may be. If you're partial to Fellini-esque tales of woe, you will like this book. If not, best that you pick up a copy of something entirely different (like "Betsy-Tacy" or "Goodnight Moon") and leave this book to those who would enjoy it better.
vintage gorey, but not for starters.......2001-09-09
If you're unacquainted with Gorey, don't start with this - start with Amphigorey. But if you've already got the EG bug, here's another must for the library. This sequel of sorts (in as much as anything can truly be linked to anything else by EG), is a delight that will get you snickering everytime you put marmalade on your aubergine.
A Gorey Sequel.......2000-08-01
In this sequel to "The Haunted Tea Cozy," the Bahhum Bug returns to Edmund Gravel and takes him on another journey to ponder over the fates and destinies of others. Upon their return to Gravel's home they calmly await the millennium. After all, will another day make a difference in the lives they just saw?
Edward Gorey (1925-2000) RIP.......2000-06-12
Edward Gorey died in the Hyannisport Hospital on April 18, 2000 from heart failure. On April 23, 2000, Charles Osgood on "Sunday Morning" (CBS) aired a final interview with Gorey and gave a short memorial to him. Gorey final interest featured finials, and his final stuffed creation was the figbash. Gorey's first work was THE UNSTRUNG HARP (1953) and THE HEADLESS BUST (1999) appears to be his terminal one unless he has left some manuscripts for posthumous publication. Let's hope that he did. He's gone, but he is now draped with the robe immortality and on his way to take his place in the Pantheon of Literature next to Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll. A fitting poem for his mausoleum would be one by Walter Hamilton: "I never had a piece of toast, Particularly long and wide, But fell upon the sanded floor, And always on the buttered side."
