Possibly the worst book on varanid lizards ever written........1999-10-12
Aside from the beautiful photography (most of which is mislabled), this book has to be the worst treatment of varanid and helodermid lizards ever written. The author has done little more than regurgitate outdated facts. It seems like the rest he just made up. The taxonomy is a joke, as is the rest of the book.
Probably the poorest book on this subject in print........1999-03-13
This book was probably written more to capitalize on the popularity of monitors than to contribute anything either current or accurate. Illustrations are mislabeled, poor drawings, or misleading. Text and taxonomy are seriously out of date.

Book Description
Unique among lizards, the monitors are in some ways more like birds and mammals than like their smaller and less-active relatives. Their size and behavior have long made them objects of fascination and myth wherever they are found. The Komodo Dragon, the world's largest lizard, is a central tourist attraction in Indonesia. The author provides information on the anatomical and physiological traits that have made the varanids such successful and spectacular animals. He deals with their ecology and behavior in detail and includes a description, range map, diet, conservation status, and life history notes for each species along with almost 200 references on varanid lizards. General guidelines for captive care are included. The book contains essential information for the professional herpetologist, dedicated pet owner, and reptile enthusiast.

Originally published by King and Green!.......2000-01-14
This book is a knock-off of the much more reasonably priced book by King and Green called "Goanna"-- down to chapter sequence, subheadings, and even poor but recognizable copies of illustrations. The taxonomy is poorly done, but the color photos are pretty good.
The Best written monitor reference I have seen........1996-08-02
DeLisle presents an outstanding, comprehensive book on
Varanids that includes keys, range maps, and detailed natural
history information for each species. Tables show preferred
optimal temperature zones and detailed dietary information
for each species.
Book Description
Australia is home to a rich and unique fauna, but few Australian animals are as intriguing as the monitor lizard. Their abundance and bold behavior have made them a familiar favorite with generations of Australian bush walkers, campers, and even picnickers. In an easy-to-read style,Monitors covers the fascinating natural history of these ancient animals, which includes the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon. This book is an update of the successful 1993 Australian Natural History Series title, Goanna. Since the publication of the first edition, many major studies have been undertaken on Australian, Asian, and African species of monitors (goannas) and much fascinating new information regarding varanid lizards has emerged. For instance, research on Varanus albigularis has revealed that they can count, while work on Varanus salvator shows that they swim in the ocean when not searching for food. These findings plus other new information in areas as diverse as taxonomy, diet, breeding behavior, and energetics have been incorporated into this text. Two new additions are a chapter on parasites of varanids and a section on foraging strategy.

Nice!!!.......2007-05-12
This book introduice in a very simple way the biology of varanid. This study is mainly focus on australian species but biologist can do the link with others species from Asia or Africa. I recommand this book at everybody who have biological basis as student, herpetologist, teacher,...
good, but not great.......2006-07-21
focuses almost exclusively on V. rosenbergi studies and little else on other species of varanus. has some good general data on preferred temperature ranges, metabolic rates, and other data related to scientific studies of varanids but misses the mark that most people who purchase these books are herpetoculturists/hobbyists. They want to know data on all species related to diet, humidity, habitat, etc to create a functional environment for their kept species. for that, i give it 3 stars out of 5. it misses the mark for hobbyists.
Great resource on varanids.......2004-07-22
I will state right now that this book is not, IMHO, an easy read, or a particularly fluid read.
However, it is very informative, containing much information about the natural habits and ecology of varanid lizards. My main complaint is that the book seems to use V. rosenbergi as it's archetypal varanid; there are some 9 sub genera and several dozen species, and I wish that more attention had been payed to the some of the other varanids. However, this is still one of the few good monitor books that's actually in print, and is worth your read weather you're an academic herpetologist or a keeper (or for that matter if you are thinking about keeping a monitor). It provides insights that are sorely lacking in most other (in print) books, espically in regards to the thermal biology, water useage, and the diet of these lizards. It's easily worth your effort to read it.
The discussions about taxonomy are also great, and informative in regards to how gene sequencing is being used to establish relationships and derivations between species.

Outdated.......2006-05-14
Stick to the other more up-to-date books on the market such as Australian Goannas by Matt Vincent & Steve Wilson and Monitor Lizards by Daniel Bennet.
The photos are nothing new and the line drawings are terrible.
Book Description
It’s been a half century since Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing made the first ascent of Everest. Their success capped a thirty-year struggle that cost more than a dozen lives—and touched off a new era in the history of the mountain. The past fifty years have seen Everest become an even greater magnet for adventurers—both foolish and heroic. Some of the world’s best climbers have carved out incredibly dangerous new routes on the peak, and many have died trying. Meanwhile, hundreds of nonclimbers have taken on Everest, with mixed results. This history has created an entire literature in itself—a story of triumph and tragedy of epic proportions. Whether it’s Peter Boardman on being forced to leave a friend to die near the summit, Stephen Venables on spending a night out near the summit—an experience only a handful of men have survived—or Chris Bonington on the death of Boardman and Joe Tasker on the Northeast Ridge, almost every great climbing writer has tackled some aspect of the mountain, and Epics on Everest includes their best work.

Don't Put this One Down!.......2004-03-07
This is one of the most exciting books on the subject of mountain climbing I have ever read. Adrenaline on full!
A thoughtful collection from a variety of viewpoints........2003-04-19
Not just "there I was in a whiteout" stories, although those are in there. The sixteen pieces represent attempts on Everest back to the Twenties when Mallory disappeared. They are in chronological order, which is helpful because many of the writers refer to past history in their work. All but three are excerpts, but as always, carefully chosen so that you enter and exit the work without feeling confused. There are selections about the early exploration of Everest and then a detailed third-person account of the first ascent in 1953. Geoff Tabin writes about the dynamics of an expedition and the labor that goes into making even an unseccessful assualt on the mountain. Willis puts an interesting spin on the idea of "survival" by including two interesting accounts - one explaining why the previously strong bond between Messner and Habeler didn't "survive" after their 1978 triumph without oxygen, and a first person account by Maria Coffey, who after losing Joe Tasker to the mountain traveled ther with Peter Boardman's widow to find closure for her own "survival". And there are the epics: Venables' near fatal overnight bivouac on the mountain, Anatoli Boukreev's rebuttal of "Into Thin Air", which cast him in a poor light, an account from Lene Gammelgaard, a less-known participant who nearly died that brutal night in 1996, and my favorite - an emotional yet self-effacing first-person story of that same disaster by Michael Groom, one of the guides, who reflects not only on his own near-death, but the helplessness of a guide who could not save his clients: it was he (among others) who walked away from Beck Weathers and left him for dead. So all in all a great read on many aspects of Everests history, and if mountaineering gets your blood going, don't overlook the earlier series volumes"Epic", "High", and "Climb", all packed with riveting tales of death and survival from mountains around the world.

Some of the most exciting and harrowing mountaineering events ever chronicled are collected in Epic. From Jon Krakauer's solo ascent of Devil's Thumb in Alaska to John Climaco's account of being threatened by a homicidal Pakistani army officer in the Himalayas, these are stories of survival in nature's most inhospitable places.
Book Description
Epic is a mountaineering term that evokes a sense of treacherous disaster — the climb that went wrong; fighting blinding snowstorms and horrific avalanches; days spent tentbound, running low on food, water, and oxygen; surviving broken bones and shattered spirits. Editor Clint Willis has gathered the most exciting climbing literature of the modern age into one cliff-hanging volume with 15 memorable accounts of legend-making expeditions to the world’s most famous peaks, often in the world’s worst possible conditions. Authors include Jon Krakauer, Greg Child, David Roberts, Alfred Lansing, and others.
Customer Reviews:
Epic, delivers the goods.......2002-04-24
This book is essentially a compilation of short stories from books written by world class mountaineers. Anyone who is well read in this genre will immediately recognize these short stories from the books they were taken. The stories are exceptionally well written and edited. Some are epic survival tales and others document the never ending string of tragedies that befall many mountaineering expeditions. The format works well even though the stories are in no particular time sequence. I highly recommend this book, and many of the other books from which the stories have been excerpted. Pick some of your favorite short stories from this book and follow up with the complete tomes. You will not be disappointed.
Good Collection - Worth Reading.......2001-09-17
This book is a collection of short stories about some very very very dificult climbings in the most dangerous places(mountains) under the most terrible conditions.
Among the stories are some classics like: The West Ridge-Everest(1.st ascent - Hornbein & Unsoeld); Annapurna(1.st ascent - Herzog version); k2 The Savage Mountain(The Schoening belay - by Bates and Houston); McKinley winter's ascent(by Art Davidson).
The book provides a good taste of the dificulties a climber must surpass in order to succed(survive), the only downpoint is that some stories just missed a more tradicional ending, basicaly because in the end you don't know what happened to the climbers, you can only assume they survive.
Good for the armchair adventurer.......2000-09-13
Willis' compilations include well-chosen "high points" from selected mountaineering books. Serious climbing-book readers will already have most of the books, but those who just want to get to the solo bivouac scene in which our hero freezes all his toes after losing his partners to an avalanche will find Epic a good buy.
HIGH TENSION.......2000-09-08
This audio book took me six hours down the road to Mobile without pain. It was so riveting that time disappeared. These are stories of men's struggles to climb the highest mountains in the world, complicated by sheer ice, blinding storms, lack of oxygen, and extreme cold. These authors are the actual climbers so that we are able to understand them as their emotions rollercoaster from elation at the start to deepest despair as they contemplate not only not being able to summit but their very possible end on the mountain. For those who can live vicariously it is the limit.
Oustanding collection.......2000-01-10
Clint Willis has created a fascinating series of books with Epic, Climb, High, Wild, Ice, Rough Water, and The War. Each of these volumes presents the best literature about their respective subjects in a powerful cohesive manner. These books are a quick read, but intricate and spellbinding. I have given many of them to friends and family as gifts.
