Book Description
Written by TV naturalist Tony Soper with specially commissioned paintings by the grand-daughter of 'Scott of the Antarctic', this is a beautiful and informative guide.
Customer Reviews:
gorgeous illustrations, info. you won't find anywhere else.......2005-07-03
This has got to be the single best guide to Antarctica's unusual wildlife. Everything is covered here, from Gentoo Penguins to Crab-Eater Seals (which don't actually eat crabs). Beautiful illustrations make it easy to identify birds & other animals while your out on the ice. If you're going to the White Continent, you'll want to stash this little book in your daypack. This book was useful when my husband & I visited the Antarctic peninsula, which we chronicle in our DVD "T&T's Real Travels in Antarctica" (also available on amazon.com).
A handbook essential for any Antarctica-bound traveler.......2005-06-07
The price tag may seem steep for the fourth edition of this 144-page paperback - but where else are you going to find details on the wildlife of Antarctica, tailored as a take-along tote for the Antarctica-bound traveler? Color drawings by Dafila Scott accompany nature history descriptions of each creature and discussions of identification specific to Antarctica, from contending with visibility factors to seasonal identification features. Antarctica: A Guide To The Wildlife is a unique and strongly recommended "take-along" handbook essential for any Antarctica-bound traveler.
Great, portable guide.......2001-03-06
I bought this book in preparation for a trip 'South' in December 1999/January 2000 and it was an extremely useful guide to wildlife in general but especially good for penguin information. The drawings by an ancestor of Robert F. Scott's are lifelike, and engaging art as well. The brief summaries of natural and exploration history are accessible and informative. If you are looking for a portable guide to peninsular wildlife get the book--you won't regret it.
A good, portable guide to commonly seen Antarctic wildlife.......1998-02-14
If you are visiting the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands, this guide is a good field guide to identifying, and learning about, the most common Antarctic fauna you will experience, including birds, mammals and cetaceans. (It is not a comprehensive guide for htose desiring in depth information and identification of every species.) José Kirchner

Customer Reviews:
This dictionary gives the serious student a powerful tool........1999-12-07
The Oxford Russian-English Dictionary was my first real dictionary as a Russian Language student. Taking advice from a personal hunch I bought the book before I ever stepped into a university lesson in Russian about three and a half years ago. This dictionary has served me extremely well particularly in terms of translations excercises. I personally consider this dictionary to be a fabulous reference tool for anyone student or professor serious about the study of Russian with a focus on finding the most authoritative and accurate translation of over 80,000 words and/or phrases from Russian to English. Please consider purchasing this dictionary if you speak English as a native language and truly are serious about your studies of Russian. The only drawback to this dictionary comes from the fact that it forces the user to have a good sense of the meaning that he or she is after since it provides such a huge variety on certain translations from Russian to English which is quite understandable considering the difficulty in what many term {comparitive linguistics} i.e. (word to word) translation. I hope that anyone who wants to add to his or her vocabularly will consider purchasing this dictionary for I believe that it will help tremendously with this endeavor.
The best Russian dictionary on the market.......1998-11-12
Oxford is the standard. There is no better Russian-English dictionary available. Grammar forms are provided; examples and idioms are given. Appendices include abbreviations and geographical placenames.

Book Description
The first part of this book provides the basic vocabulary required to obtain a full history and perform thorough examinations. The second part contains twenty one case histories which cover a wide variety of emergencies commonly encountered by junior doctors and medical students. The questions asked by the doctor in each case are not exhaustive but are all pertinent to the management of the patient. The examination findings are displayed in a similar form to those written by British junior doctors in case notes and on casualty cards. Following each case history there are lists of differential diagnoses, vocabulary lists and lists of descriptive words in the form of "word collocates." The third and fourth parts of the book contain several types of work lists, all aimed at quickly enriching the readers vocabulary, and the fifth part contains medical abbreviations, also abbreviations for the U.K. medical Appendix to the book includes illustrations with names of parts of the body and main organs.
Customer Reviews:
Great handbook for a medical student, doctor or translator!.......2003-08-31
This is an unusual book - a dictionary and a phrasebook under the same cover. I found it very helpful when obtaining a full medical history and performing an exam of a patient. It has all the needed vocabulary; all the questions that are generally asked by a doctor.
The following part of the book has 21 history cases: from cardiac arrest to appendicitis, from chest pain to asthmatic attack in a child, to drug overdose, knee injury, etc. There are separate chapters with practical words related to operative surgery, medical administration, etc.
This book also includes a chapter with medical abbreviations, and examples of doctor's referral, discharge and some other letters commonly used by doctors.

This dictionary is a revised version of the same dictionary published in 1999. It contains about 24,000 terms, most of which concern the traditional medical science. Good reference source!.......2003-05-15
I own this dictionary and use it on a regular basis. It's a good reference book for doctors and nurses working in any medical office or facility, as well as for interpreters or translators assisting them or Russian speaking patients. It covers fundamental medical terminology - from anatomy and pharmacology, to virusology, cardiology, oncology and psychiatry. It's also helpful if you are looking for specific terms concerning microsurgery, laser technologies, genetics, computer-based diagnostics, etc. Its Russian title is "Bolshoi Russko-Angliiski Meditsinskii Slovar'". This dictionary is arranged in alphabethical order in Russian language. It's a good reference tool.
Customer Reviews:
It is the unique multilingual dictionary of Medical Plants.......2002-06-09
It is the unique multilingual dictionary of Medical Plants, in which one there are Russian equivalents (other dictionaries I did not find). The dictionary is very convenient by that if not know of Russian equivalent to English or on the contrary, always it is possible to use the Latin term.
Book Description
Superb examples of the ironworker's art — elaborately wrought designs for gates, fences, finials, banisters, window grilles, signs, marquees, cathedral screens, and a host of other architectural and decorative appointments, from Gothic style to Art Nouveau — meticulously rendered in fine black-and-white drawings reprinted from rare European and American books and periodicals.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference.......2005-10-01
This book is chock full of illustrations! It has gates, doors, door arches, stair railings, and fence sections. It runs the gamut from simple to very intricate designs. If you are a designer, this is a great resource. If you just appreciate design, you will enjoy browsing through it.
Very interesting reference.......2002-04-19
I enjoyed this very much. I wish there could have been more photographs, but that would have been a different book. This is almost exclusively line drawings.
Very helpful and informative. Warning: trying to duplicate these in decorative metal today is *expensive*. Architectural salvage might be more affordable than starting from scratch.
Beautiful Work.......2001-12-12
I have a different use for this book than perhaps the typical buyer. I bought it because I love adapting these iron designs into borders or patterns for my pen and ink drawings and paintings. Each page was such a delight when I discovered this book I bought it immediately. You need not use it as a home furnishings book. It works just as well as an inspiring art book.
Great for Designers.......2001-03-15
I've worked in the Ornamental Iron business for 3 years as a designer and business manager. I use this book more than any other for generating some fresh, usually more elaborate design ideas. There are a number of styles represented in the many drawings. If you are interested in seeing unique and interesting wrought iron designs you will not be disappointed.
A MANUAL FOR DESIGNING YOUR OWN "CASTLE".......2000-08-30
This is the most comprehensive collection of beautiful designs for gates, rails, fences, walls, pillars etc. From my personal opinion, there are some designs within the book that might be even more beautiful than the ones shown on the front cover. The various styles range from quite simple to very complex (flowery type). With over 400 designs, one is sure to find a few that matches his or her own tastes. A great book for homeowners and others. Probably some of these designs could even be used in graphics and other works apart from architecture.
