Customer Reviews:
You'll want to try them all!.......2007-10-18
We are not expert hikers, but we got around fine using this guidebook. We knew we wanted to go hiking during our B&B weekend in the Hudson Valley, but wanted to try somewhere other than Mohonk Mountain (which is very nice, and covered in the book, but we've done it a few times). We took his suggestion and rode out to Stissing Mountain. It was so worth it! Between the directions in the book and help from our GPS, we were able to find the trailhead. Climbing to the top was a little intense, but we were rewarded with amazing views from the firetower, just as promised! We can't wait to go back for more hikes!

Customer Reviews:
Best Catskill hiking book out there.......2007-04-06
Very good variety of hikes from easy to rough! Used for some hikes already, and if very accurate. Replaced my older guide from about 1987.
Catskills are a great place to hike. Not that far from New York City, yet not crowded at all.
Cult classic.......2006-01-19
This book is devoid of BS and purple prose and some people will need more hand holding, for sure. this is a trail guide written for the more "advanced" hiking crowd--those who need TLC may be better off with a purfumey regional guide that tells you where all the good capuccino joints are. This is the best guide out there--and tho it has a little tweaking to do, it will be the cult classic for the next 20 years. Trust me. :)
Okay... could be more specific........2005-10-06
This is really not to bad of a book. The map is helpful especially when driving to locate trailheads!!. I've been up two of the trails and they were fairly correct on the distance and time required. I think the author could have been more specific in his directions as to how to use the book (ie whether the distances and times are one way or round trip). He seems like he is speaking to someone who has been in the region and not to someone like me who is used to the type of hiking on the west coast. I also needed the map to figure out what he was talking about most of the time. I wouldn't complain if there were a few pictures.
In summation... a solid effort but I've read better.
Excellent guide! .......2005-10-04
This is an excellent guide with a great selection of trails and a handy topographical map with all the details necessary for planning and guiding you through the area.
VERY USE FULL GUIDE.......2005-09-30
We visit Castkill Mountain more than ones and this guide have everything you need to planning your hikes in this region. The map, the sharp description of the trails and the recommendation are very use full for experts as for the beginners. Today we have other supports for the map like Tyvek............ may be next edition?

Hudson Valley, Saratoga Springs.......2007-03-23
Bought this first for Saratoga Springs where my daughter attends college. Best that I have found browsing booksellers. Not the greatest travel book but the best available. Best feature is that it is comprehensive for small towns and locations all the way up the Hudson. Quite valuable in looking for stores or eating places in Newburgh, Nanuet, and small towns off the NY Thruway. Indeed, I lost the first copy of the book I bought and purchased a replacement from Amazon.
Ranks among the best travel guides .......2006-11-13
This is a thoroughly enjoyable guide book. It was invaluable in helping us plan and enjoy our week in the Hudson Valley. It is so well written and the descriptions of restaurants, attractions and inns are so personal that it inspired us throughout our trip. We enjoyed our tour of the Hudson infinitely more because of the heartfelt enthusiasm that came through from the book's writer.

The story of a year among animals.......2005-02-23
The author details her life in the woods of upstate New York for a year, living with racoons, chipmunks, a dog, several cats, and some goats. In particular, the raising of two baby racoons is detailed, along with many descriptions of the personality of each animal. Zistel is an observant author, and clearly loves animals - which comes through in her warm, affectionate rememberances of the ones she shared her life with. This book was not quite as good as Good Companions by Zistel (which features some of the same animals), but certainly it's worthwhile if you're an animal lover looking for an interesting read. However, this is a true story, not a feel good one, so beware that some of the animals meet tragic ends - that said, however, there is no graphic violence to be concerned about. The story of Gretel, an orphaned raccoon who spent her entire life with the author, is particularly enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as it sounds.......2006-04-29
Instead of buying this book, I went to the library to check it out and after reading the other reviews, I was very disappointed. This book has little to do with "sanity saving" it's mostly just letters of unique situations written to the author of this book. He replies with common sense advice and even sometimes advice that "beats around the bush" (indirect advice). For the average healthy bride I recommend reading the book by the Knot (don't remember what it is called but it has "The Knot" in the title). I also got that at the library and it has absolutely everything! No need to get another book. It offers real "sanity saving" advice and some real life stories for all situations. But if I have to say something positive about the other book, it does have a cute cover... but thats about it.
For Anyone Who Dreams of The Perfect Wedding.......2005-09-23
Wedding Sanity Savers is the perfect antidote to the highs and lows of planning a wedding -- no more worries, be happy! Wedding Sanity Savers anticipates for you any and all situations that may arise and gracefully takes you through solutions with common sense, practical advice that allievates anxiety, makes you smile, and teaches you how to get the most joy out of your wedding day. I recommend Dr Atkins book to brides, grooms, parents of the bride, siblings of the bride and groom, grandparents, bridesmaids, bestmen, ushers, and clergy. In fact, anyone involved in planning or participating in a wedding can benefit from the sound advice of Dr. Dale Atkins.
Wedding Sanity Savers.......2005-08-09
"Wedding Sanity Savers" is a must read for anybody who is planning a wedding or needs an engagement or shower gift. I've read it and am recommending it all new brides who need to get through everything from pre-wedding jitters to dealing with divorced parents, money and those testy bridesmaids. In fact, last week I saw Dr. Atkins, one of the co-authors, on the Today show talking about in-laws. I wish this book had been around when I was getting married!
Best Wedding Book Out There.......2005-07-29
This book should be required reading for anyone involved in a wedding - brides, grooms, parents, wedding parties - just everyone! Hearing others' stories and the expert advice that Dr. Atkins has for them is beyond helpful. After reading the book, which is a page-turner by the way, I feel like I'm equipped to handle any wedding situation that comes my way. If you know a stressed out bride - overnight her a copy ASAP!
Planning a wedding can be fun!.......2005-07-19
Before you even think about planning a wedding you MUST READ this book. Not only does it address all the uncomfortable questions/issues, it also brings to light the ones you didn't even know to ask.
It takes the ZILLA out of being a BRIDE . . . and it makes the perfect gift for friends when they get engaged!
Dr. Dale and Ms. Gilbar - THANK YOU compiling such a helpful manual.

When Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Gilbert Shelton, and other Bay Area misfits first started producing "underground" comics in the '60s, they were considered to be highly innovative in their use of frank sexual themes. However, some 10 to 15 years before they commenced their explicit, often offensive cartoons, another genre of pornographic graphics was dying out, the so-called "Tijuana Bibles" (or sometimes "Cuban Bibles," "French Bibles," etc.). Simon & Schuster has released a collection of these antique obscenities that often featured famous political, show business, or cartoon figures having more fun than mainstream censors would have allowed. The introduction, by comic book apologist and New Yorker comics editor Art Spiegelman, is an amusing and sarcastic look at the history of this lost medium, with some interesting reflections on the genre, noting that "Though there are bound to be those who will loudly declaim that the Tijuana Bibles demean women, I think it important to note that they demean everyone ... it's what cartoons do best." While the reprinted comic strips are often amusing in being laughingly bad, the historical essays and asides by editor Bob Adelman provide fascinating historical context. A sociology of mid-century sexual mores and the love/hate relationship that Americans have with their celebrities is evinced by the combination of reprint and commentary.
Book Description
ABOVEGROUND FOR THE FIRST TIME!
As wry and raunchy as the subject it celebrates, this inspired volume introduces a new generation to the Tijuana Bibles, underground comic art form the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s devoted to making sexual mockery of every sacred cow in the pasture. Folk art with a subversive edge, the Bibles are unveiled here with a hundred life-size reproductions.
Customer Reviews:
Not so hot.......2004-07-19
One reviewer correctly compared these to the "dirty pictures" most people saw in junior high school. This is an accurate description. Most of this stuff is not that funny or particularly erotic. In fact, it gets dull pretty fast. The cartoons with Amos & Andy, Laurel & Hardy, Hitler, and Mahatma Gandhi (that one must be seen to be believed), and a minstrel-like Joe Louis are interesting largely for historical reasons. But the takeoffs (no pun intended) on Betty Boop, Lil Abner, Popeye, etc. are surprisingly flat, considering the unexplored comic possibilities (though the Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck segment is good for a few laughs). Be warned though, some of this stuff (especially in the last chapter) is really gross even by modern standards, so proceed with caution. Overall, it's more of a curiousity piece more than anything else.
Tijuana Bibles (Wr. by Bob Adelman).......2002-05-20
From the 1930's through the 1950's, small eight page underground comics were distributed all over the United States. They were crudely drawn, even more crudely written, and usually involved popular icons of the day engaged in sexual acts, accompanied with some very blue humor in the form of dirty jokes and puns.
These were called Tijuana Bibles, and also known as Eight-Pagers, Two-by-Fours, Gray-Backs, Bluesies, Jo-Jo Books, Tillie-and-Mac Books, Jiggs-and-Maggie Books, and F**k Books, this according to introduction writer Art Spiegelman.
Author Bob Adelman has collected dozens of these rare bits of cartoon history and republished them here, adding a commentary by Richard Merkin, and putting these into a quasi-historical and sociological context.
Ever wonder what Popeye looked like while having sex? What about Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse talking dirty while going at it? What did Cary Grant and Alger Hiss look like during gay love? All of this and more are here.
This book does a better job of reprinting the Tijuana Bibles than anything, but reading a bunch of them in a row gets very tedious. The introduction warns against this, as well. The drawings are often very crude, and the humor is very old, since their prime era was in the 1930's. Also, all but a few of the artists were anonymous, and the printings were not done in the exotic locales of Havana, Tijuana, or London (as the little booklets claimed), but probably in some basement with a mob type watching over the production.
This is not just a book of dirty pictures, but a very interesting look at what the author calls early sex education. While body parts are rather exaggerated, young men could look at these in the days before government and school sponsored sex ed and have a vague idea of what to do.
If you have any of these dirty little books around, then hold on to them, they are rare. If you have this overview of the history of Tijuana Bibles around, keep it away from the kids, unless they are curious about the sex life of Dick Tracy or Dagwood Bumstead. I recommend this thin book to anyone who claims to be a fan of underground comics, or erotic art and cartoons.
Of archival interest.......2000-12-29
...Interesting academically, perhaps, or as a cultural artifact, but if you're a fan of erotic cartoons and are after genuine wit or bawdy humor, try something closer in time to the present, such as Dark Horse Comic's new edition of "Little Annie Fanny: Vol. 1." These cartoons are mostly like the scribbles you passed around in grade school, and their erotic impact is lost, nearly a century later.
Crude, but educational and great fun!.......2000-02-24
I quite agree with the 6/10/99 customer review from Melbourne, Australia. This interestingly packaged (and heavily illustrated) collection will alternately amuse and offend most everyone. While some of the art is decent (or even good), much of it is crude but somehow apropos to the subject. The packaging is very good, and the book's price is a bargain for what you get. I'm 50 and didn't even know these "Tijuana Bibles" existed until I stumbled across this book. Very educational as well as entertaining. I first bought a copy last summer and enjoyed it so much I bought another for a friend, who enjoyed it as much as I did.
Lewd and crude, but very funny!.......1999-06-11
This collection of satiric and pornographic cartoons will alternately amuse and offend people everywhere. Nothing and no-one is sacred. Some of the strips are beautifully drawn and funny, some are crude and downright witless and others (note the strips believed to be those of Wesley Morse) are both witty and erotic. If nothing else, this collection serves as a potent reminder that sex, in all its permutations and manifestations, has been around for a lot longer than some people care to admit!
