Customer Reviews:
Did author not read the previous books?.......2007-04-25
While reading this book, I felt like the writer (which I heard is no longer Cecily von Ziegesar but a ghost writer now) had no clue about what had happened in the previous books. The characters' actions were very out-of-character. Serena is shocked to hear Nate tell Blair he loves her (which was not even the first time for that) and suddenly she has always been in love with Nate. Serena and Nate were not that into each other when they were together. To quote from Nothing Can Keep Us Together from Serena's point of view on page 216, "it had never been right, her and Nate being together. And it would be better be single this summer so she could focus on the film. At least now she wouldn't have to bother breaking with him. Not that they'd ever really been together." And now she's in love with him...yeah, right.
This book was a huge disappointment. I waited so eagerly for it, expecting it to be like the other books, only to be let down. Those who read the series will want to read the last two books but expect them to be awful in comparison to the previous ones and the characters to not act like themselves.
Another GREAT read.......2007-03-04
I've been reading the gossip girl series ever since they came out. The characters have no imperfections, and some have too many, but it's exactly what most teen girls crave. The books have a touch of girly girl, with a huge tocuh of sexuality, where most teen books dont go. But it makes you want to read more and more. Would i lie to you, the most recent book in the series, is so much different from all the other books, because it goes where none of them have gone before. Nate and Blair are finally happy and together, and now Serena has finally got what she deserves and is left stranded, litterally. It really turned the whole series in another direction. But it still keeps you wondering what nate is going to do with his life. I highly reccomend this series to anyone who wants quick entertaining books.
What happened?.......2007-02-18
Would I Lie To You is the 10th book of the highly popular young adult series Gossip Girl. I remember when the first book was released in 2002, and I was finishing my sophomore year in high school. I had no where to go for the summer, went to the bookstore to buy a few books to keep me entertained for the summer, and one of these books was Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar. Once I started reading it I was sucked into it ,and since then I have been buying every single book to keep up with the storyline. Being from NYC I am very familiar with many of the locations that the author mentions, so it's like I can imagine the characters in these places. However the last 2 books have been disappointing, especially this one. From what I've heard Ziegesar has hired a ghostwriter to finish writing the Gossip Girl series because she is too busy writing her newer series "The It Girl". I actually kind of believe this because the writing has changed, and Gossip Girl is not as witty as she used to be, plus the whole mystery of who Gossip Girl really is, is not such a big fuzz anymore, although we still don't know who she is. The main characters of this particular installment are Blair Waldorf, Serena van der Woodsen, Nate Archibald, Vanessa Abrams, Dan Humphrey, and Chuck Bass has a short appearance in this book. Jenny Humphrey (Dans younger Sister) does not appear in this book, but we get to read some of the extremely short letters she sends Dan from her summer vacation trip in Europe.
Reading about Vanessa and Dan was a total bore, most of the times I felt like skipping their chapters, not even the fact that Dan had all of a sudden gone gay amused me or had me in a state of OMG! What straight guy suddenly goes gay? And the fact that Vanessa (Dan's on and off girlfriend) took it well was just plain stupid. The Blair, Serena, and Nate storyline was the part that kept me semi-interested. After Nate tells Blair he loves her, and Serena overhears him, she decides she is in love with him too, even though in the past books she never showed signs of being in love with him. So she decides to write him a letter telling him how she really feels, and puts it inside the compartment of Nate's Car. Too bad Blair finds it before Nate does, reads it, rips it into pieces, and throws it out. I honestly think Serena really doesn't care about Blair, and unlike Blair who actually seems to have emotions, feelings, interests, dislikes , and whatnot, Serena doesn't seem to have any emotional depth. We just know she is the most perfect, flawless, female specimen (Well, physically because she's a lousy friend) to walk the planet earth. *gag* Its as if she were a robot. Overall this book was mediocre, and hopefully the author makes up for it in the next book.
The book of would i lie to you.......2007-01-16
My daughter loves these books of gossip girl's. She's 16 and has ever one of them.
An irresistable installment in the Gossip Girl series.......2007-01-06
In WOULD I LIE TO YOU, most of the Gossip Girl crew moves to the Hamptons for the last summer before college. While not the best novel in the series, fans will still enjoy keeping up with Blair, Serena, Nate, Vanessa and Dan.
A few differences from previous installments are notable. Gossip Girl herself has gone from funny to flirty. Serena is changing a bit and finds herself competing with Blair in new ways, which may damage their friendship permanently. Dan struggles with sexual identity, which will be a huge surprise for readers of the series. And the language has become stronger in this book, with inclusions of the four-letter word.
Still, there is plenty of fun in this tenth volume. Serena and Blair start by being muses to a hotshot designer at his house in the Hamptons only to find that he has also installed two foreign copycats of them. They are like cheap versions of the series stars, with knockoffs and dyed hair. Serena and Blair trick them into going naked, crashing parties and more, as they emphasize who is original and who is not.
In the meantime, Nate spots the naked girls from his Hampton house next door and starts to wonder why he ever left Blair. His summer of work at Coach's house turns dangerous when Mrs. Coach tries to engage him in an affair. Nate does what he does best, which is to run from anything confrontational. But will Blair run with him?
Dan is impressed with a new co-worker at the Strand who wants to start a literary Salon. But there is very little literature being discussed at the event. People are pairing up instead for a makeout session, and Dan is surprised when his male co-worker kisses him. Is he experimenting? Is he really gay? What is going on?
Vanessa heads for the Hamptons as a nanny, but soon ends up as the new muse for the fashion designer instead. That is, until she gets fired. Vanessa usually ends up on her feet, but this time she finds herself back in Jenny's old room next to Dan's, trying to figure this one out.
Serena and Blair run away together with Nate. As they get ready to head off into the sunset (literally), they make one last stop for Serena's 18th birthday party. It is a night of reveling and revelation all the way around with soul-baring confessions. Readers are left hanging with some big questions. Will Nate still be able to go to Yale now that he dissed Coach's summer job? Will he and Blair be together? Will Serena's confession drive her and Blair apart forever this time?
The same questions continue to pop up even as the Gossip Girl crew grows and tries to change. Even if WOULD I LIE TO YOU isn't as strong as others in the series, there is something irresistible about these characters and the mistakes they keep making. Readers will be waiting to see what happens when the gang goes to college.

Are you ready to go Dutch?.......2005-06-03
Are you ready to go to the Netherlands where bicycal riding, canal site seeing, and tulips are done almost all year long? Do you want to know the real story? Know what's happening with Cicily's family. Join me into a world where the Netherlands are the best place to be!
Melanie Gets Better and Better.......2005-03-15
The sequel to The Diary of Melanie Martin is just as charming and rings with the same truthful voice, as Melanie records the ups and downs of a vacation in Holland with her family and best friend. Melanie is reading the Diary of Anne Frank on this trip, and this historic diary lends a thoughtful note to Melanie's own diary, which includes dealing with the threat of the cancer which has infected her best friend's mom. With the heroine's observations as witty as ever, Melanie Martin Goes Dutch will delight young readers as they experience both van Gogh paintings and topless beaches through Melanie's eyes.
Melanie Martin Goes Dutch: A real "that's just like..." book.......2004-09-14
When you open this book, you will find yourself peeking into the private diary of Melanie Martin, a ten year old girl living in New York with her mom, dad and Matt the Bratt (aka little brother!). Her mom is an art teacher who teaches her kids to appreciate art, and she loves when they do, even if its only because it includes naked people or blood scenes!
The story starts when summer vacation has just got out, and our girl Mel is getting bored. She and her mom do puzzles. It is one utterly boring day when Melanie's mom gets a phone call telling her that she's got the grant (for her teaching) and they're going to Amster Amster Dam Dam Dam!
They barely get this news before it is discovered that Cecily's mom (Cecily is Melanie's best friend) has got breast cancer.
Mel's mom invites Cecily on the trip and Melanie is overjoyed!
They all leave together for Amsterdam. They all expirience lots of adventures including lost luggage, a topless beach, LOTS of museums and a HUGE argument.
Mel thinks Cecily is getting way too much attention so they silently fight.
Will the fight turn this best-friend bliss into a bummer summer?
Read and find out!
Melanie Martin Goes Dutch is a great book that plenty of kids can empathize with - even grown-ups too!
I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I have, including Carol Weston's other fantastic books!
3 cheers, two thumbs up, plus five WHOLE stars as well!
My summer vacation with a Dutch Touch.......2004-06-27
Wishing you could take a trip this summer? The title of this book just makes me smile. Melanie's mother has a grant to study Van Gogh in Amsterdam for the summer and the whole family gets to go along. Melanie's diary of their trip is a fun read. Travel disasters such as lost luggage, an annoying little brother, and a fight with her best friend are not what she imagined her vacation would be like. Melanie is reading Anne Frank: the diary of a young girl. As events unfold on their trip Melanie finds herself empathizing with Anne. Her visit to the Secret Annex is very poignant.
I loved "hearing" the Dutch phrases (complete with pronunciation,)smelling the food and seeing the sights through the eyes of a character who is the same age I was when I lived there. This is a very funny book. The presence of Anne in the background of the story gives the story a sweetness beyond the humor.
Melanie Martin is the Best!.......2004-02-21
This is the best book ever! It taught me a lot about Holland, and I learned a LOT of dutch. Now I can speak a little of a different language!

Book Description
A heart-warming and inspiring, true tale about the meeting of a creature of the land and a creature of the sea, of falling in love, and ultimately, having to say good-bye. It is also the story of a very special place, where an ordinary day can turn into an extraordinary adventure.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful story!.......2006-12-01
Nan Lincoln's real-life story of finding a young seal is both heart-warming and informative; interspersing a history and background of Mount Desert Island amongst the story of Cecily. A very intersting and all-around wonderful book.
What if you had a seal on your sofa? A real seal!.......2004-06-03
Nan Lincoln's story of the summer she spent raising (with the permission of the authorities) an abandoned seal pup is the most endearing story I think I've ever read. Her tale of her struggles to get it to eat, swimming with it, riding around with a seal in the car, carting Cecily to the shore in a wheel barrow, then, finally, successfully integrating it back into nature is destined to be a classic. Ms. Lincoln has a wonderfully readable prose style and the story is absolutely unique. I can't imagine anyone not being delighted with it. A friend called it "a little jewel."
This is not a children's book, although it contains both photographs and sketches of her amazing experience and will be enjoyed by all ages. The youngest children won't be interested in her bits of history about Mount Desert Island, I suspect. Mom or Dad can skip those parts when reading out loud.
This should be a movie. Where's Michael Eisner when we need him
The Summer of Cecily_ the best book of the summer!!!.......2004-05-28
You're on a beach- the tide is coming in- you see an abandoned seal pup halfway under a rock. What would you do? When Nan Lincoln sees the pup on the beach in the early summer of 1976 she feels like she should adopt it, six hours later she decided to and she did. She named the pup Cecily. She keeps Cecily for the summer and finds ways to make her life as similar as it would be to the life of other pups. Cecily has an attitude that is expressed by Nan (in English not seal language) and is very funny to read about. In the first chapter however Nan mostly writes about the setting and her family which is also explained in chapter 2. Soon the book heats up and she finds Cecily and you are brought along on the ride of your life as you go through the summer with Cecily, Nan, and Nan's family. Each chapter brings a new laugh to the scene.
Nan has a unique writing style that is very descriptive and specific. She has written a very unique book that would be perfect for a 4th Grade read-aloud or an independent reading book for other grades as well as 4th Grade. Her writing style is also sometimes straying to short sub-topics of the story to help you understand other parts of the story. All in all I would give this book 5 star rating.

The delightful tale of an abandoned seal pup's six week adventure into our human world.
Book Description
The first illustrated history of women surfers, Girl in the Curl captures an important and overlooked part of the sport's past in gorgeous color photos. From rising Australian star Layne Beachley to two-time world champion Lisa Anderson, many of today's hottest surfers are women. But female surfers have been integral to the sport from the beginning. Author Andrea Gabbard explores 100 years of women in surfing, offering portraits of famous wave-riders and anecdotes of surf culture.
Customer Reviews:
Girl in the Curl ý A Century of Women in Surfing.......2000-12-12
"There have probably been hundreds of books written about surfing, but not one...has been written about women in the sport. Until now, 'Girl In The Curl - a Century of Women in Surfing' by Andrea Gabbard, finally fills the substantial void.
'I could have gone on and on and on,' Gabbard says of her experience writing 'Girl In The Curl,' which begins with a note on the ancient Hawaiian legend of Pele learning to surf, and takes us through the early days at the Makaha International contests, to the 'Gidget' phenomenon, to the birth of the pro circuit, and on through the `90s, when surf culture was changed forever by a clothing company (Roxy), a new magazine (in your hands), a surf shop (Water Girl) and a battalion of courageous women like Izzy 'Surf Diva' Tihanyi who dare live there surfing dreams. Along the way we meet Marge Calhoun (in a rare interview), Linda Benson, Lynne Boyer, Frieda Zamba and others who give historical context to all the rising stars on the WCT today.
The book is graced by the likes of Rell Sunn, whom Gabbard never met but of whom a poignant tribute is included, by Robin 'Zeuf' Janiszeufski. Like Rell, Zeuf was diagnosed with breast cancer. She communicates the thing all surfers know, certainly Rell: 'Surfing removes the need to close my eyes and seek the voice inside.'
Gabbard, author of 'No Mountain Too High: A Triumph over Breast Cancer' (1998), 'Da Bull: Life over the edge' (1990) and others, began writing this book just a year ago at the urging of her publisher, the feminist Seal Press....'I got back in the water when I began writing this book.'
Much of her research was culled from sources like Wahine, 'tons of old surfer mags,' and the vast collection of surf memorabilia amassed by Randy Hild at Roxy/Quicksilver. Along the continuum of women's surfing, 'Girl in the Curl' is an historical moment in itself. It arrives in bookstores around Thanksgiving. --Elizabeth Glazner, Wahine Magazine
Girl in the Curl: A Century of Women in Surfing.......2000-12-12
"'Despite the organization of a pro tour and the advent offinancial sponsors, professional women surfers have always suffered afate similar to that of other female athletes, pursuing their sportwith far less promotion, prize money, and media coverage.' -Fromthe Intro
While the above statement is inescapably true, I mustadmit I was a little worried that Girl in the Curl was going to be nomore than a feminist tirade on the unfair nature of sexism insurfing-a worthy argument, to be sure, but a battle that needs tobe fought in the water and on the beach, not in a coffee-table book.Fortunately, author Andrea Gabbard understands that a history ofwomen's surfing deserves more than a hundred pages of pettywhining.
The introductory timeline chronicling the major milestonesof women's surfing could give a few folks (men and women alike) a bitof a shock as to the sweeping presence of the Y chromosome in thewater. It ain't just Gidget to Lisa Andersen, dude. While it'sfairly widely known that the first Australian surfer was a woman(Isobel Letham, 1915), not many are aware that Marge Calhoun won theMakaha International Surfing Championships in 1958 or Margo (Godfrey)Oberg won her first world title at age 15. Rich stuff, even for thenon-history-philes.
What follows is essentially a series ofwell-written and relevant profiles on women who've made majorcontributions to the sport. It's put together more like an organicherstory told by the participants than a consecutive series of eventswritten by some third-party narrator up in the sky. From MargeCalhoun to Rell Sunn to Joyce Hoffman to Pam Burridge to LayneBeachley and the rest of the 21st century pros, it's obvious Gabbardhas done her homework.
Each woman profiled has a slightly differenttake on what it means to be a woman surfer, and while some may have alittle bitterness about lack of exposure or unfair financialcompensation, the whole picture is bigger than its parts and if Girlin the Curl is accurate-which I suspect it is-it's worth a hellof a lot more than a thousand words." --Marcus Sanders...
Girl in the Curl: A Century of Women in Surfing.......2000-12-12
"Girl in the Curl is the book we have all been waiting for-whether we know it yet or not. Never before has such a comprehensive history of the women who have impacted surfing been put together.
Gabbard, the author of the Greg Noll biography, Da Bull, weaves together the women of surfing through insightful interviews of those who have shaped the sport. Starting with the ancient Hawaiian waterwomen, continuing through the likes of Marge Calhoun, Gidget, Mary Setterholm, Frieda Zamba, Lisa Anderson, Layne Beachley, Sofia Mulanovich, and Kirstin Quizon, I think one would be hard pressed to find a woman surfer who has made an impact on the sport of surfing not mentioned.
Girl in the Curl is organized in a series of short, easy to read chapters that explain the hardships and brilliance of each woman. Gabbard does not shy away from the dark side of women's surfing. She presents the chilling inequality of prize money and sponsorship. "The total prize money for the men's 2000 World Championship Tour is $2.1 million; for women, it's just under $500,000." The book does not turn into a man-bashing why aren't things better book. Gabbard simply presents the truths of all aspects of the sport as told by the athletes themselves. Gabbard also does a wonderful job of presenting unusual facts, such as mentioning Pam Burridge recorded a hit single in 1984 called "Summertime all Round the World." The highlight of the book, and very well surfing itself, is the chapter on Rell Sun. Rell's life is celebrated through her wonderful accomplishments for women, children, and surfing.
From the timeline at the start of the book, to the brief biographies of the professional surfers, and those surfers making a career in the industry, to the glossary and index of resources, I can't think of anything the book is missing. I have been wishing someone would write this book for years-I am thrilled my wish has been fulfilled!
Girl in the Curl is a beautifully written and illustrated book of women's surfing. Photographs are mainly the work of Jim Russi and are no doubt some of the best women's shots available today. This book will not only inspire the reader, but also fill wahines everywhere with pride. Women surfers who did not have the advantage of being there for the events of the past century will finally be able to learn of and feel what has happened, and further appreciate their mothers, grandmothers, and sisters of the sea. I would recommend every surfer buy this book and read it again and again. Girl in the Curl is the centurybook of women's surfing. I know I will keep this book with me at all times in hopes of having it signed by all the heroes of women's surfing." --Sunshine Makarow, Editor of Girls Surf Life Magazine
DUDE!!.......2000-12-02
I grew up on the beaches of Southern California. How I envied the surfersÑtheir freedom, their agility, their inherent rebellion. But just as "people on Ôludes should not drive," chicks did not surf. "Girl in the Curl," Andrea GabbardÕs stunning pictorial documentation of a century of women in surfing, proves that is BUNK. In glorious Technicolor, Gabbard displays women surfers as ballsy as their male counterparts. In addition to the gorgeous photosÑjust put-Ôem-on-your-wall-and-sigh gorgeousÑGabbard can really write! Her essays are short and compelling, taking us from the dawn of womenÕs surfing (ancient Hawaiian waterwomen) to present-day champions. Along the way, she lets you in on interesting little-known-ers. If you didnÕt know that Pam Burridge recorded a hit single in 1984, you need this book. If like me, you didnÕt even know who Pam Burridge was, you REALLY need this book.
