This book made me want to go out and free dolphins!..........2002-12-02

Wow, this book is great! All I have to say is, if you are the kind of person who doesn't care if their tuna fish is Dolphin Safe, you might not care enough about dolphins to read the whole book. But if you care about your fellow animals, this is a good book to read. I went out and immediately started freeing dolphins. I have freed only 4 so far, but that was not my fault as my dolphin-freeing career was cut short when one of the buggers bit me in the leg and I had to retire from my Project.

And another thing. Disney makes all these movies about whales, whales, whales. Free Willy. Free Willy 2. Free Willy 33 1/3. Well, don't THEY care about freeing dolphins? NO! Why? Because they're all about making money! And studies show that young kids would rather cuddle a plush killer whale than a plush dolphin! It's the merchandising.

Anyway, after reading this review you should be ready to buy my^D^D the book and free some dolphins. After all, fish are people too!

EXCITING STORY, FREE WILLY WITH A DOLPHIN.......2001-05-02

The author, former trainer for dolphins starring on the much beloved Flipper tv series, details his struggle with big industry while he tries to return dolphins to the wild. There is a big trial in which the author loses a sizable civil fine for his liberation activities. He still has a let's get on with life joie de vivre about him. O'Barry's life is the stuff of drama and he's a modern day David in the eternal struggle with Goliath, in this case the captivity industry.

This book has a lot in it, I am an absolute beginner but I like where Goddard is coming from. This book and his other are the best I have come across so far. If you like where his head is at you will enjoy and get a lot out of them, I have.

Goddard Puts Me On Edge.......2002-01-07

Wayne Goddard is probably one of the top 10 hand-made knife makers in the United States. This book, however, was a somewhat disappointing rehash of his BLADE magazine articles of past years. There are sections of the book which are repeated verbatim on more than one page, and the disjointed collection of old articles is somewhat difficult to follow at times. On the other hand, the information that is presented clearly is very useful if the reader is interested solely in blade forging, as the stock removal method is almost entirely dismissed. Included is an excellent dissertation on the chemestry of steel.

A wealth of information for bladesmiths.......2000-10-09

There is a lot of detailed information in this book, most of which are from ABS master smith Goddard's regular Q&A column from Blade magazine. As a bladesmith for more than 30 years, Goddard explains the theory and practice of his craft clearly and simply. The section on what happens to steel during hardening (quenching) and tempering is especially well done which plain old knife enthusiasts (non-metallurgists) will appreciate.

For the beginning or intermediate bladesmiths, this book is worth every dollar for the value of the information alone. For inspiration, there are a number of colour plates in the book to display Goddard's lovingly-crafted knives. Well written, easy-to-understand, plenty of photographs, and overall, a great pleasure to read. Just wish it was better organized.

Review of Wayne's new book, "The Wonder of Knifemaking".......2000-06-16

This is the Second book a knifemaker should buy. If you are new to knifemaking, you would be better served by reading "How to make Knives" by Loveless and Barney, or one of the other how to books. If you have already made a knife or two, Wayne's book is for you. It answers many questions that will come up when you continue to make knives and sharpen your skills. Wayne also answers many questions from his popular series in Blade Magazine adding quite a bit of detail for a through presentation.

All of the techniques, materials and processes are complete and more importantly up to date. Wayne covers the Crucible partical metallurgy steels (CPM) and steels that are currently in vogue such as BG-42 and ATS-34 as well as old standbys like 5160, 52100, O-1, and D-2 (to name a few).

While not a reference book, "The Wonder of Knifemaking" could easily serve a knifemaker in that capacity. If I could only have one knifemaking book (believe me, I have them all; even the little paperback from Atlanta Cutlery and Bob Engnath's Catalog, God bless him) it would be "The Wonder of Knifemaking" by Wayne Goddard.

I rated this book 4 Stars because the organization could have been a little better. There is so MUCH information in so many places in such a short span. Ok...Ok, I'm writing a critical review here and this is the only thing I can fault. I just didn't want this piece to read like a commercial from the Wayne Goddard Fan Club. If you are a knifemaker, buy this book.

In Summary, I think Wayne just wanted to get everything he has discovered, learned, or worked-out in his 20++ years of knifemaking onto paper for everyone to have; that's the kind of guy he is. Oh boy did he do an excellent job.

Loaded, Compact, and Readable.......2007-09-28

I bought this dictionary for a recent trip to rural France where few people speak English. This dictionary is very portable and the font type is very readable. It was small enough to carry in a purse or a waist pack. It is divided into two parts: French-English and English-French. I found it very helpful in deciphering road signs, menus, touring sites, brochures, and conversations. I consulted it daily. It contained most of the words that I wanted to translate either in English or French. Now back home, I use it regularly instead of my big French dictionary when reading French news and magazines. It has additional information about basic verb conjugations and a list of conjugations of common verbs. I highly recommend it.

The best small English/French dictionary out there A+.......2007-02-01

I'm a college professor, and I both use this dictionary myself and highly encourage my students to buy it.

It is absolutely the BEST small French-English dictionary I've found, and has many features of larger dictionaries at a reasonable cost (it's also much longer lasting than plain paper back dictionaries, of which I"ve seen many ratty copies--missing 1/2 of the "a" section-- in my career). While some smaller dictionaries offer not much more than one-word definitions for terms (which lead to many mistranslations), Langenscheidt's offers numerous contextual examples that help students choose the correct word, and also shows many idiomatic expressions.

An A+!

(Note: Langenscheidt's offers many sizes of dictionaries. This review applies only to the one list-priced at $13 .95. Some of the smaller versions are as incomplete as other dictionaries).

Special Note: This is a new updated French/English English/French dictionary released in 2005. Previously the last update was in 1980 so be sure if you're shopping around to get the new version vs. the old version.

The best French/English dictionary I have ever owned........2007-03-13

This dictionary is the best French/English dictionary I have ever owned (I own 6 of them right now)! It is very user friendly and the size makes it very portable. Whether you're studying French for the first time or you just need to look up a word every now and then, this is the dictionary for you!

Used or New - buy this.......2006-01-22

I had the opportunity to be a foreign exchange student in France from 1991-1992 and thankfully found this before I left. Not only is this a great dictionary but logistically you can actually take it with you. Many translation dictionaries are so big that taking with you while on vacation, a business trip or any other reason would not be possible because of it's size and weight but this fit into the pocket of my coat. It's a little too big to fit into the back pocket of your jeans but it's size is still small.

The only complaint I had about it was the fact that there seemed to be some words left out. What I found after a while, however, was the words that were left out were relatively new words (words that started as slang but became part of the language). You have to keep in mind that this version of the French-English, English-French dictionary was released in 1980. There is a new version that was released in 2005 that I would recommend over this one if you want to have the most up to date version. This particular version will have 99% of the words you come across and as of today you can buy this used for under $1)

Overall this is a wonderful dictionary and one that I personally used extensively during my year and France and now use it again while trying to teach my daughters to speak french (the memory fades a bit after 13 years!)

Best Little French dictionary around.......2000-10-25

I lost my Langenscheidt's French pocket dictionary the last day of a month's tour of Le Midi and I was devastated. Besides the compact size and solid construction, the French idioms and useful phrases are quite complete and easy to find as variants under the main roots. The chart of irregular verbs is very helpful. The type face is easy to read. When you open the book, it stays open. The use of a so-called universally recognized pronunciation chart is the only weakness. Most users of this book are not attuned to such symbols. It would be much more helpful if the words were spelled out phonetically.

The best pocket french-english dict........1999-11-21

I've had this dictionary since high school and am still using it in University. It's great! The book cover IS different, plasticky. I've recently lost my copy and am now using a friend's Larousse French-English dictionary, it is not the same at all, the definitions are not as helpful, and it's bigger in size! go figure! So I guess I'll be buying a new copy now!

Substantial while being concise and easiest to flip through.......1999-08-23

Easier to use than the Larouse -- it just feels better. Whether it is the flex binding or the quality of the paper, you just get to the words sooner in the Langensheidt. The text is so complete that there is very little guilt in not going to the Unabridged Dictionaries, which are too ponderous to be consulted with ease.

Lagenscheidt's Pocket French Dictionary.......1999-12-03

I went to Moorea & Tahiti, French Polynesia on business in October-November 1999. I learned French in high school and college, but I forgot how to coordinate my French verbs with noun usage. I used Langenscheidt's French Dictionary because of the infrequent conversational French living in the U.S.A.

Lagenscheidt's French Dictionary allowed me to refresh my memory and revive the French language I learned early in my life. I was able to use the dictionary and converse with the Tahitians easily and without difficulty. I received compliments on my French language from the Tahitians-they thought I was born in Moorea!

The dictionary fits in my small purse and the book cover is easy to wipe clean, if you spill a drink on it. Tahitians I know living in Moorea think Langenscheidt's book should be sold in Moorea and Papeete, Tahiti for all tourists visiting the Society Archipelagos.

I highly recommend this dictionary to travelers traveling to French Polynesia or France. Important Note! Just remember, in French Polynesia, everyone addresses each other with "Tu" rather than "Vous" like in Paris, France.

So, please look up all the verbs that addresses using "Tu" by looking in the back of the book for "Tu" & the verb configuration for "Tu" on the chart. It's so easy to use and the dictionary is not complicated to understand. I used my dictionary everyday and I earned the respect of the Tahitians!
