Book Description
A powerful predator, revealed here by an acclaimed nature photographer.
The polar bear is the largest terrestrial carnivore, uniquely adapted to thrive in the harsh environment of the Far North. In
The World of the Polar Bear, renowned nature photographer Norbert Rosing follows the polar bear through each season.
With its thorough and engaging text and spectacular photography, the book provides:
- A season-by-season account of the life of the polar bear, including feeding, mating, rearing of cubs and journeying from the ice
- An intimate look at the animals that share the polar bear's environment, including seals, arctic foxes, walruses and muskoxen
- A section on such northern sky phenomena as sun dogs and the northern lights
- Many anecdotes and insights about the polar bear -- at once a loving parent, a fierce predator and a natural jester.
In addition to the 175 truly remarkable color photographs, there are four spectacular gatefolds.
The World of the Polar Bear will appeal to any reader interested in natural history, animals, and the Arctic.
Polar bears are seriously threatened by global warming, and this book will attract considerable press attention.

Great book, amazing price.......2007-02-08
This is is a beautiful coffee tableThis is a beautiful coffee table book that is under-serviced by its photos online. The quality of the pictures, text and even the manufacturing are excellent. It makes for an amazing gift for anyone who appreciates Polar Bears, Nature or even art books in general.
Fab Bears.......2007-01-10
Anyone who appreciates photography and has a love for wildlife will want to buy this book. I ordered it right after my return from Churchill, Manitoba, where a lot of the pictures were taken. I had seen it while in Churchill at close to $50.00. It is absolutely fabulous, and I am extremely jealous of mine. It just makes me want to go back again and again to see those incredible creatures once more.
Beautiful Photos.......2006-12-28
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys wildlife or nature. The photos are amazing and there is just enough information about each picture. I've never seen more breathe taking pictures of polar bears and their habitat.

Simply a stunning book!!.......2002-01-26
I found Tom Mangelsen's gallery in Jackson a few months ago, and while I was there, I had a chance to see many of his just downright stunning images.
As an aspiring wildlife photographer, I truly appreciate the superb work of Tom Mangelsen. Also, while in his gallery, I had the chance to talk to as well as meet Mr. Mangelsen himself.
This book is just simply stunning. I cannot think of any other description. The many different images of the polar bear in its natural environment has to be seen to be appreciated.
What I like the most about this book over so many other "nature" books is that we get to see the many facets of the polar bears life, from the tender side with a mother and her babies, to the savage nature of these beautiful animals...not just some glossy expose that says nothing.
I would encourage anyone who loves nature photography, whether you are a "couch" photographer/explorer or are planning on a career in wildlife photography.
Heartily recommended!!!!
The best book of the best nature photographer.......2001-02-14
I discovered the work of Thomas Mangelson about ten years ago in Jackson, Wyoming, when I stumbled across a gallery devoted to his work. The most famous image there, the one of two grown polar bears "dancing," is on the cover of this book.
The book encapsulates all the artistry of this outstanding photographer. As difficult as it is to capture wildlife images, it's doubly so when you are photographing white animals against snow! Mangelson spends some four months a year in the Arctic, enlarging his huge repertoire of images. I can't begin to imagine the patience and meticulous attention to detail that is required to gather these pictures, but I'm glad Mangelson can!
I love the fact that this book shows the chronological sequence in the life of a bear family, and also that it doesn't have captions on each page. That allows you to follow the sequence of images undisturbed by human intrusion - you become a part of the life cycle, so to speak. Mangelson's work enables the viewer to see the bears as a complex family unit in addition to their usual portrayal as hardy predators. It cannot fail to move the viewer; this is a book to savor again and again.
I'm a huge fan of just about every image this photographer has ever published, and this book is, to me, the culmination of his work. I recommend it to everyone, bear fan or not!
Essential, wonderful personal story, captivating photos.......2000-05-02
This is an essential book for polar bear and nature photography lovers alike. There are over 250 photos of polar bears, and arctic wildlife captured in the beautiful frozen world they live in.
I found the photography truly captivating. The adorable bears are shown splashing in the water, dancing, taking afternoon naps & wandering through the snow. There is even one of the mother making friends with a sled dog.
I was deeply touched by the many images of the cubs snuggling close to their mother. I found the other wildlife photos featuring many foxes and birds equally impressive. The captions for all the images are in the back of the book.
Along with the pictures, there is a wonderful story of a year in the life of a mother polar bear & her 2 cubs. The author switches pleasingly between factual accounts of the arctic world, folklore, & the personal story of the bear family.
breathtaking, impressive photography of the arctic.......1998-12-30
Mangelsen has created an outstanding work of art that can be appreciated by polar bear lovers and nature lovers alike. The intentional ommission of captions until the end of the book allows the reader to view each photo as a work of art, absorbing the beauty and magic of each piece. It is an essential coffee table book for those intrigued and mystified by the polar bear, and strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys nature photography. A definite bargin in the world of nature photography books.
An absolutely stunning wildlife book.......1998-04-25
Polar Dance is in my opinion the most mind-blowing book on bears I have ever seen. I am an artist who works with faux fur, specializing in the creation of all species of bears. Polar Dance is the most treasured of all my wildlife books. The photographs of the ice bear taken so sensitively evokes my deepest emotions each time I turn the pages. I can almost feel the cold and snow out there on the Arctic. I reach for this book often for inspiration and even comfort. I never cease to be amazed at how beautifully Thomas Mangelsen has portrayed the "Tiger of the North". Certainly he has done justice to perhaps the most magnificent of God's creatures. Polar Dance is more than a book. It is a work of art.

Book Description
Every once in a while a book comes along that combines both art and research so completely, so intuitively, that it becomes a classic, offering the reader not only a wealth of information, but an escape into the life of the subject covered. Polar Bears is such a book.
Here, you will learn from one of the world's leading polar bear experts, Ian Stirling, how the polar bear evolved and adapted to its world of snow and ice. You will follow the life of the polar bear from its birth in a snowy den in the middle of winter through its fascinating methods of hunting seals on the sea ice, its seasonal migrations, and its passage into old age. And you will learn about the impact of man on the survival of this magnificent animal.
Renowned wildlife photographer Dan Guravich's spectacular visual commentary captures the playfulness and the majestic beauty of the polar bear. Over 150 color photographs portray the animals as the powerful predators they are. You will see the scars of battle, and you will see the tenderness between a mother and her cubs. In all, you will experience a truly fitting tribute to one of the most beautiful creatures in the world--the very spirit of Arctic living.
"Few men other than the Inuit themselves have had as intimate an acquaintance with polar bears as Ian Stirling and Dan Guravich. The combination of Stirling's scholarly research and Guravich's incomparable photographs are a superb celebration of these glamorous 'Lords of the Arctic.'" --Roger Tory Peterson
"Here fascinating, accurate science is interwoven in an icy matrix with humanly rich Inuit lore. The result is the best available book on polar bears." --Stephen Herrero
"Nowhere before have we seen photos that capture polar bears in such a diverse range of situations and poses. . . . Stirling beguiles us with fascinating facts." --Northwest Explorer
"Of all the books on polar bears that I have seen, this is certainly the finest." --Beaver
Ian Stirling is Senior Research Scientist with the Canadian Wildlife Service, Edmonton, and Adjunct Professor of Zoology, University of Alberta, Edmonton. For over fourteen years he has supervised the Canadian Wildlife Service Polar Bear Project. Photographer Dan Guravich was widely known for his many articles and books on nature and wildlife.

I really enjoyed this book. I originally bought it for research on a project but i was soon reading it for my own enjoyment. Polar bears are my favorite animal and this book gave me some amazing information and beautiful pictures. I would definately recommend this book to anyone.
Good book; ignorant reviewer!.......2005-08-20
This is probably one of the best book available on these amazing, intelligent, beautiful creatures. Don't believe most of what you read or hear about bears because they are not the killers that people have made them out to be. The reviewer "Howard Tuttleman' is an idiot! How you coud claim to know anything about these amazing creatures and then make a comment about the weapons and tools that it would take to bag one is beyond me. Just read "Polar Bears: Living with the White Bear" to better understand how peaceful and safe these animals are. Howard I wish someone would 'bag' you and I get so tired of stupid people like you even opening their ignorant mouth. I've spent alot of time observing brown bears and researching them so I have to deal with all the hype and myth surrounding brown bears as well. I've stood feet away from numerous brown bears and have never had a problem. It's all about knowing how to talk "bear". It also helps if you're actually more intelligent than the bear and as people like Howard have proven that isn't very common these days. Howard go back in your cave and keep you uneducated opinions to yourself. Stop the agressive ignorance!
Fascinated by Polar-Bears........2005-06-30
Hello there. I haven't posted in a little while. Been kind of busy at my forum called "Tuttle-Talk" on my website, and some other things like taxidermy strangely enough. I'm being sooooooo good at home so maybe my Dad will let me go on the camping trip to Canada this weekend. I HAVE to go with them.
So...Polar-Bears. I am fascinated by these fearsome creatures. I can't really relate to wild animals that are not found on my own continent, because there is just no chance that I would ever encounter one. Polar-Bears on the other hand can be found in Alaska and Canada. I live on the same continent as those places. I've even heard that there is an enormous display of real-live ones at the Detroit Zoo.
I cannot stop thinking about how hard it would be to take one down in a fight, and what tools or weapons you would need to bag one. Judging by what I have learned from this book, Polar-Bears are much bigger than I had originally thought. It's not the kind of creature you could take on hand-to-hand.
I would love to be able to go on an expedition to track one and hunt it down. I've been thinking so much about this. I'm even having dreams about it. How fantastic would that be to have one mounted and displayed, knowing that it was YOU who captured it? In my dream it was.....Incredible.
In conclusion I just wanted to say that this book provided a lot of great info and amazing pictures of the majestic yet fearsome Polar-Bear. I'm trying really hard to get ungrounded so I can go with my family to Canada for this 4th of July weekend. I have heard that there are Polar-Bears in Canada. Knowing what I now know, you must be ready at all times in case of a Polar-Bear attack. I am simply preparing for the worst, nothing more.
So just as a completely random question, do you guys happen to know anything about Polar-Bears? For those of you who follow my amazon.com reviews, you probably already know that I've been studying them JUST as a side-hobby. I am fascinated by them. Do you know what areas of the continent they can be found, by chance? Has anyone been to the display at the Detroit Zoo that features Polar-Bears? It's crazy, I was just having a thought-dream about how it would be to get into a fight with one. Heh heh. I don't know. Call me paranoid, but I was just wondering what kind of weapons or devices you could use to protect yourself from an attack by one? Let me know your thoughts. It's just a completely random obsession that I've had lately.
On another note, I asked previously about getting ahold of some smoke-bombs and bottle-rockets. Do you guys know if they sell these kind of things in Canada? What about roman-candles, or even those big exploding M-80s. I heard that those are a quarter stick of dynamite? Is this true? Is it like if you tape 4 of them together it's JUST like a stick of dynamite? Just my wild curiosity. I mean, 4th of July IS coming up soon, after all. It's just what people do on 4th of July. And man, those big fire-works in Detroit every year. Aren't those something? I wonder how they get ahold of those ones that shoot huge fire-balls. Do they make them in Detroit? I wonder where they make them. Heh, just for fun, if you guys happen to know maybe you could let me know. And what would happen if instead of shooting up in the air, you could shoot it straight-ahead? Not AT anything of course. I'm just thinking about putting on a great display for my family and Lyle (who is going to the camping trip too!)
Well, I'll try to post before the weekend to let you guys know if I'm going on the camping trip or not. Later.

Spectacular.......2007-04-07
I brought this book to the Antarctic peninsula with me, only to find a copy already aboard ship. It was still worth carrying.
Yes, good photos, but much better for the information. Details on identifying all sorts of animals, including the territories they can be found in at various times of the year, changes in appearance during the year and even a rather comical phonetic approximation of the sounds they might make.
I bought a lot of books in my year prep for this trip. This was one of the best. Must owning for anyone going south of 50 degrees.
Very Well Designed and Informative.......2006-07-01
Lot of great pictures and very informative articles. This book will definitely be with my camara and computer during my trip to Antarctica.
Fine book beautifully produced!.......2005-01-01
Anyone who has read my other reviews will know that I don't give stars easily but I can find no reason even to deduct a single star from this book. Whether you have been, are going or just want to dream of going this is the book for you. As its title indicates, its prime purpose is to describe the wildlife, and it gives top billing to the birds - all in a level of detail which should satisfy the most demanding birder, but which the average interested amateur naturalist should also find interesting. The authors have sensibly provided a fine set of plates rather than relying on photos as the main identification aid. There are however many good photos as well - this use of both "media" is, as far as my experience goes, unusual in bird books which tend to opt for one or the other when in fact each has its advantages and disadvantages. The section on marine mammals is of a similar quality. Another section comprehensively describes each of the regions (including Sub-Antarctic islands all the way up to Tristan) with information which makes the book useful as a "travel guide" for planning and accompanying a trip (though it is really too fine a book to get damaged in use!). In addition there are good (if relatively short) sections on geology, climate, history, botany etc etc - in fact on just about any relevant subject you could think of. Indeed if you could only have 1 book on the Antarctic this is a very good candidate - and at a very good price!

Heartwarming and Wonderful!.......2000-09-12
Although I did not see the television documentary on these two little darlings, I nevertheless loved the book. Although they are now big bears, the story of little Klondike and Snow's early years is interesting, educational and touching. Abandoned by their mother as cubs, the two bears were raised by humans. This book clearly illustrates the love and devotion of the Denver Zoo towards the cubs' care and development. Klondike and Snow are now thriving at Sea World's Wild Arctic exhibit, were they have plenty of living space and attention!
This book is wonderful for any animal lover and people interested in animal/human interaction.
A Teacher's Review of "Klondike and Snow".......2000-06-21
Anyone who was fascinated by the PBS program on these two polar bears will enjoy this book. It tells the story of their early years before being transfered to the Florida zoo. The photos are amazing! I've used this book as a resource with K-6th graders, and all ages have loved it. The text under the photos is very small and in blue, making it difficult to read, but the main text is fine, and otherwise the book is wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in these two very special bears.

A Graphic, but Good Overview.......2005-09-24
The first photograph of the book is of mother and cub polar bears eating a bloody meal. The book continues to follow a polar bear as it attempts to make a seal, a walrus, and a whale a meal. Animal lovers who don't like to see animals being eaten will not enjoy this book. But it is an interesting look at polar bears, who are a predatory animal. The photographs are vivid and large. Not all of them have bloody meals shown. I thought that the photos of the polar bear cubs were adorable. Apparently, they are about the size of a soft drink can when born! One of the coolest features of the book is the "Looking Back" section at the end, where readers are invited to look more closely at the photographs throughout the book to examine details and learn more facts about polar bears. The glossary defines words that seem obvious, even to young readers. But overall, I think this book could work well with a second or third grade science student--especially boys.
Book Description
Research scientists camped at the desolate McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica studying the local lakes and streams are one day surprised to find a young Weddell seal in their midst. Tired and hungry, and perhaps lured by the smell of the group’s cheeseburger dinner, the young male is a long way from his natural habitat on the sea ice of McMurdo Sound. Bound by the Antarctic Conservation Act, the scientists know they cannot provide it with sustenance, but instead contact seal scientists who, after some thought, decide they can provide assistance so the seal can return to the sea ice. The seal gets the ride of its life back to its natural habitat, and the scientists name one of their newly found streams to commemorate their unlikely campmate. This is published in cooperation with the Long-Term Ecological Research Network, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

charming, informative Antarctic adventure story.......2007-09-09
This book is a great introduction for 8-12 year-olds to environmental science in one of the coolest spots on Earth - Antarctica's Dry Valleys. Great artwork from real kids and the illustrations are beautiful. Clear information, and a story about compassion and cooperation. I recommend it for third through fifth grade classroom teachers, middle school science teachers, families and kids who love animals.
Kids Love It.......2006-12-11
This book is great for kids. It is an interesting book that combines elementary school level science and the adventure of a seal lost in Antarctica. One of the great features is the kids art on the side of each page that come from all over the world. The kids really liked looking at the differences between the artwork from England, New Zealand, and the US on the same topic. Also, it is nice that there are some links online where the kids can watch live footage of the seal. It is a really great way to get kids interested in learning about science. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a christmas present for young kids. I have already bought five copies.

How to Hide a Polar Bear & other mammals.......2006-03-11
Animals in the wildlife blend in with their environment. How to hide a Polar Bear shows the young reader how an animal's color helps it blend in with their natural surroundings. There are sloths, rabbits, and others inside the pages of this well simply illustrated paperback.
This book has an easy to read style and the simple illustrations help the young reader see the difference between an animal in the open and an animal that is blending in with its environment. It's pinkish cover set it apart from the other books on my desk and drew my attention to it. Perhaps a book for early elemntary children.
