It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn't ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There's no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic.

By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach's we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on.

We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have.

The Sugar Solution reminds us that by taking care of ourselves each day we not only reduce the risk of countless life threatening diseases but we also increase our energy levels and abilities to cope with day to day stress. I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.

This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.

I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.

I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.

Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

Rise Above is Gwen Shamblin's follow-up to her million-selling, spiritually based weight loss book, The Weigh Down Diet. I have this book and read the first three chapters before I put it down. Mrs. Shamblin's doctrinal beliefs do not mirror mainstream Christian thinking. She has an agenda she is pushing, but it's not about weight loss. I encourage readers to check out Christian reviews about her weight loss program and her church. It is really scary stuff. If your goal is to lose weight and to experience a closer walk with God, The Dieter's Prayer Book by Heather Harpham Kopp can be used with any healthy-eating weight loss program.

First I will say that Gwen Shamblin is giving us the truth about how to lose weight and win our battle with food. She has correctly diagnosed that food has become a God-substitute in our culture. She tells us truly that we are a greedy and self-indulgent people. If you follow her guidance about tuning in to your God-given hunger and fullness mechanism, and obeying God's signals for eating, you will lose weight. You will overcome temptation as you trust God more and consciously think about what you are doing in the realm of God's will concerning over indulgence.

However, if you are an 'orthodox' Christian, you will be challenged by some of Gwen's teachings, and will find them disturbing. If you believe that God is triune, and that Jesus is the Son of God and God the Son, prepare to be challenged. Gwen takes Scripture out of context, or uses only her very narrow interpretation of certain 'proof texts' for her agenda. Her understanding of Church history is limited at best, and is sometimes very wrong. She can come across as judgmental and mean.

If you are a very strong in your faith, you may be annoyed at some teachings, but you can still benefit from this program. Keep your focus on the Exodus metaphor, and Gwen's teachings about God's design for your hunger mechanism and how to cooperate with it. Stay attuned to learning more about how God works in your life, especially in the things you never thought about before (like your relationship to food). You will lose weight, and can gain a closer relationship with God. You may have to ignore a lot of bad theology, but Gwen's teaching on overindulgence as idolatry is very good.

I am appalled at some of the negative comments this book has received since it is indeed a life changing source of information. Her book was written with poise and a deep love for our Lord and Savior. Not only will you learn how to break free from strongholds, but you will learn how to have an awesome love affair with the 1 true GOD. So please rescue yourself from the clutches of the enemy and begin to live anew. Thankyou Mrs. Shamblin for your wonderful insight.

Started to attend the new Change series one month ago and felt something was definately missing in her message about how God viewed me about my sin of over eating.I had bought her books the Weighdown diet and Rise Above.Many scriptures to back all her claims but where is the scriptures on Grace? Aren't we saved by Grace through faith,it's a gift from God,not of works so no one can boast? Well that's all she does boast how only her Remnant Fellowship and like minded people will be saved from God's wrath.My bible tells me God has not appoint us to wrath! That's why Christ came in the first place.Why does she looks at the speck in her brothers eye when all along she has a log in her eye?I know if I were to die today even overweight I would go to heaven because I am In Christ.And don't tell me it's cheap Grace.Grace isn't cheap Christ paid the price so we can be saved.These books are full to the brim of Pharisee legalism just Beware.Believe me I sent alot of money on the series and the Holy Spirit is the one who showed me the error in these teachings along with other ex-Remnamt members and Weighdown members (you can find out that this teaching is a cult on the internet),who were either kicked out and never spoken to again or made to be ridiculed in front of the whole Remnant church.I threw away ALL of my books related to Gwen Shamblin.Some claim that there's fruit in people lives and it's changed them.Well there's fruit in other cults too and some day they will be tested by fire (holy spirit) and I believe all her works will be burned up as chaff!

My daughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. We found a lot of information on the web for this condition. I ordered this book and it was more informative than anything we found on the Celiac Disease web sights. The book is very informative and written so that the average person can understand what is being said about the disease and its complications. My daughter says that every one diagnosed with Celiac Disease or even a wheat intolerance HAS to read this book. It is that good.

Dana's books have been an invaluable resource to us and she's been at it again with this book! She is always SPOT ON when it comes to the ins and outs of Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet! I bought this book for a recently diagnosed friend but read it first myself. Then I bought another copy for our home because I love being able to have straight forward books like this as a resource when talking to my kids' teachers about Celiac Disease.

To the lady who's doctor told her to not worry about separate toaster's... he doesn't understand the AUTOIMMUNE implications of Celiac Disease if he's telling you not to worry about cross contamination. ANY amount of gluten can be dangerous to a Celiac, symptoms or not! We lost a family member to intestinal lymphoma because of her carelessness with the diet.

I am a recently diagnosed Celiac, so I am starting at square one.

This is a very informative, easy-to-read book that covers a lot of general questions. I even tried one of the recipes (gluten-free quiche) and found it to be very good.

I do think that the author is a little over the top about contamination, etc. I asked my Dr (who has a Celiac child) about using separate toasters, etc and her response was, "Some people have way too much time on their hands."
Once I got beyond the paranoia I am finding this book to be a very practical help

"Feast Without Yeast" was necessary for me since not only do I have CRS but am also extremely allergic to yeast. However, because I was sick for three years before doctors realized what was wrong, my body (or my mind) learned to dislike 'new' foods in fear of becoming ill.

This book is fantastic if you're not a picky eater, or if you don't like eating the same dozen items over and over again. I appreciated the depth in which the author discussed the reason he write this book, and am glad it's on my shelf for reference!

I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me. I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings. I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

This guide is so chock full of great information and useable recipes for the yeast free needy. More and more people are finding serious allergies to yeast, wheat, and milk, the very foods we find challenging to avoid. Lots of wonderful recipes to try also.

Because if you DON'T know anything about Candida, you would not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the "avoid" foods that are mentioned in this book.

I've seen some bad reviews of this book, but those people must not have needed it as badly as I did. I found this book after working through my chronic yeast infection for a year.
The authors make it relatively easy to start eliminating problem foods from your diet, working your way through the process as far as needed. I happen to be one of the 'bad' cases. I can't even eat everything on the strictest level-- #4.
The recipes are 'real', things that somebody with problems could eat. Almost all the recipes are uncomplicated (only a few being detailed), many very easy, and straightforward. Many could be considered 'fast food' if you have a crockpot or can handle leftovers remade. Many recipes help you understand how much of certain fresh herbs to use, too.
This book is valuable for those who are serious about this topic. I appreciate it very much.

This book taught me a lot about my metabolism. It made me aware of mistakes I was making by how I ate and what I ate. My body just naturally shed 20 pounds over the last year or so by applying what I learned from the book. Once my metabolism returned to a healthier state, the weight was shed naturally. I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is diabetic.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of Schwarzbein and have been following it with good results. So, since I enjoy reading, I was very interested in reading book 2. Even for someone who enjoys reading it took a lot of willpower to get through the whole 500 page book without quitting. The first half is a great deal of technical information that is boring and extremely repetitive. (The whole book could have been condensed into 150 pages easily.) The second half of the book is about the plan itself. It was very discouraging to be following one way from her original book and then she changes a lot in the second book. Like maybe she wasn't right after all. So, to sum it up it ends up leaving you wondering whether she knows what she is talking about or not. The good news is I think that the general way of eating is great, but I have a hard time with being fully convinced in view of her changes (regarding saturated fats, amounts of grams, now having to weight proteins, etc.). I hope this helps.

2 out of 5 stars Tunnel Vision to the Hormones.......2007-07-26

With this book, Dr Schwarzbein has shown just how severe her tunnel vision is on the hormones and the endocrine system. There are falsities throughout the entire book because she completely ignores peer-reviewed research in any area that is not directly involved in the endocrine system.

For instance, she lists ADD/ADHD as a lifestyle disorder that's a result of low serotonin. I'm a young adult/adult Learning Disabilities Specialist with a background in neuropsychology. According to the peer reviewed research that has been available for over a decade, ADD/ADHD is a genetic disorder for which researchers have found several alleles that, when switched on, create the disorder. Newer research has shown that the brains of people with ADD/ADHD have as much as 15% less gray matter in specific areas in the right hemisphere that have to do with focus and attention, and this discrepancy has been imaged via MRI. And research has shown for over 3 decades that all of this leads to a decreased level of dopamine, not serotonin. Some people with ADD/ADHD do have decreased levels of serotonin but not all.

Another instance where she completely ignores the research is when it comes to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), which she all but dismisses out of hand. Research to date has shown that there is a genetic tendency towards CFS, that it is a central nervous system disorder that can have disasterous effects (a woman in England died from it summer of 2006 and the autopsy showed her spinal cord, brain stem and areas in the brain to be highly inflammed), that the majority of people who have this CNS disorder have smaller than average adrenal glands (imaged with CT and MRI), which may make it impossible for them to absorb all of the daily stressors that come our way, and that onset almost always occurs after a significant trauma (death of a loved one, accident, severe illness, etc). According to some leading researchers in the field, CFS is akin to an electrical overload hitting the circuit breaker box in your house and shutting down all the systems. It hits the hypothalamus in the brain, which controls all the systems in the body, and they all drop low. Lifestyle doesn't do that, folks. Something far more intense is required to create such a destructive onset.

Less well known but highly important research in the field of immunotoxicology has shown in the last 5-10 years that what a pregnant woman is exposed to in the last trimester of pregnancy can damage a fetus' immune system making it difficult at best for the child's immune system to mature once it is born. If an individual goes through life with an immature immune system, that person is unable to mount an adequate immune defense against disease, their immune system often doesn't know the difference between an external invader and their own tissue so they develop auto-immune disorders, and their immune system may be on such high rev that they're hypersensitive to much in their environment, hence multiple chemical sensitivities, allergies and asthma. In fact, the data is so overwhelming that the EPA and FDA are currently developing new guidelines for drug and chemical testing that would address prenatal exposure.

While I find that Dr. Schwarzbein's message to balance out the diet and eat whole foods as opposed to processed foods to be the standard message at this time (think Dr Hyman's book Ultrametabolism) and probably the most prudent form of diet to follow, much of the information she presents in her book is out and out false and needs to be seriously challenged.

Her principle is excellent, the program is fantastic, however, if you are not familiar with her system...read her book called "The Program" as your first read. It reads easiest and is the most understandable and will be a great foundational block to her other books.

Ive gotten about half way through this book and really doubt if I can finish it. I learned way more just reading articles off the internet about the CO2 to O2 ratio and the importence of keeping CO2 in your system. To me this is a non-sensical book good for anyone that has no real breathing issues...I strongly recommend finding something else to read.

Our breath is the only thing that is with us from beginning to end...the breath is who and what we are...the breath is interconnected with Spirit and every time we breathe in and every time we breathe out, we are breathing in and out the One Creative Power that creates all of life out of Itself...

The breath does not judge. The breath does not condemn. It is the breath's job to sustain us at all times. I dare you to sit and breathe deeply for one hour. I betcha can't do it. If all of us decided to just spend one hour breathing deeply in and breathing deeply out, this world would be transformed in a day...it really would...because deep breathing calms us, centers us, awakens those parts of us that we have stuffed, repressed, or have just wanted to forget.

I've gotten to about 26 minutes of deep breathing and I cried like a baby. I had such stirring memories - future as well as past - as to what life could truly be about. Just like the book says, when we free our breath, we free our life.

That shallow little nose and mouth breath we do is not breathing, just like those Chicken McNuggets and that extra large coke is not sustenance. We need to spend time nourishing our bodies, our minds, our hearts, and our souls in ways that replenish us and awaken us to the beauty that just sits and waits for us to finally notice...

I found this book helpful for stress relief, more conscious breathing and better sleep. It's well organized and easy to absorb. Aside from the practical applications it lays out, the book also offers good insights on why we don't breathe properly and the negative effect poor breathing can have on the body and on overall health. I highly recommend it.

I have so many things to say about this I would like to use bullet points. I will cover what it has done for me, add some comments on the book itself and then make a couple of final notes.

Notes about what using Egoscue's method has done in my life:

* I have been using this and Pete Egoscue's other book "Pain Free" for a year and a half now. I am a female in my early 30's. I have sent a copy of this book to all the women close to me because it has helped me so much.

* I have a very severe case of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and had constant pain throughout my body. I tested only two pressure points short for Fybromyalgia. As I became more ill my overall physical health declined severely. I couldn't even stand to do dishes for long, let alone cook or exercise or many of the things I am now become able to do.

* Within the first two weeks of doing the e-cises (only about 30 min a day) I stopped getting night sweats and the pervasive, all-over body pain went away. I still had a lot of joint pain and realized I was very badly out of alignment (when standing comfortably my right foot was turned out and further forward than my left by 6 inches - no kidding!).

* Over the last year and a half I have become less chemically sensitive, I don't get dizzy as often, my stamina has improved (I had gotten so I couldn't handle even handle flying on an airplane). For years I had a yellow tint to my skin (my doctor thought it was normal), but this has now disappeared, my liver enzymes were mildly elevated, but are now normal.

* I haven't had ANY pain from my herniated disk for over a year now!

* You don't have to be in pain to benefit. For years I tried to do handstands, but never go good at it. Presently I can do them with complete ease. I never realized that it wasn't my arm strength that was lacking (I had really strong arms), but rather, shoulder strength and alignment.

* I've had a limp ever since I was 11 when I cut the tendon to my large toe. I can now proudly say that the limp is completely gone. :) I also don't lose my balance all the time when I walk like I used to.

* Almost best of all is that I had sleep maintenance insomnia, which has greatly improved. I used to wake on average once an hour every hour throughout the night. Now I wake perhaps once every three. This is continuing to improve.

* Most importantly, I had stopped being able to sweat years ago. I would simply overheat. After a year of doing e-cises I started sweating again!! Once I started sweating I found I can tolerate being around chemicals more (perfumes and such), I don't get as swollen, and I recovered from exposures faster.

Nothing else I tried really helped my MCS, but this has made all the difference in the world. I'm not sure I would have recovered to this point without it. The improvement in my quality of life has been worth every minute of it!

Notes about the book itself:

* This sort of thing is very difficult to teach from a book. I've found using "menus" from each of his books to be very useful.

* Some things you have to figure out for yourself. I started on my age group's restoration e-cises in this book and my knee pain got worse. That is when I figured out that Egoscue was really serious when he said that if you have pain in a specific joint that using the "Pain Free" book first to target it was best. I did the knee exercises in that book for about a couple months and then was able to return to the menus in this book without difficulty and found it much easier.

* I love the format of this book. It starts with infancy and how even babies and children can get inadequate movement. I found its detail in how we became "out of alignment" to be most useful and it really inspired me to get back into alignment.

* He also gives a restoration menu for each age group and a maintenance menu for when that one because really easy.

* For those who want to go further than the maintenance menu, he gives a strength menu and a strength menu with weights if you are interested in using them.

* He has a menu for people who are seriously ill and need "slow changes".

* He also includes menus for prepregnancy/1st trimester, second trimester menu, third trimester menu, and post pregnancy.

* The Supine Groin Stretch Does take a long time - but only at first. The first day it took me an hour each leg for the groin muscles to relax. The second day it was about 50 minutes each. The third day it took about a half an hour each leg. But within two weeks it only took a few minutes each leg and now, still, it only takes me about two minutes a leg.

* If you have a lot of problems in many joints or very severe joint pain I suggest starting with Egoscue's "Pain Free" book, but if you don't have many problems or don't have much pain then I would recommend this one.

A couple final notes:

The e-cises really must be done everyday to see the benefit. When I skip day, two or especially three I start getting pain back, not as bad as when I first started this, but I start losing ground. When I am consistent I see progress daily. My closest friends all use this and they keep coming back to me and saying how well it works to get rid of their pain and how much better they feel afterwards.

My husband is a professor in a medical school, not only does he use Egoscue's exercises from his "Pain Free" book, he recommends these two books to people regularly.

The Golden Rule states to do unto others what you would have them do unto you. That message was meant for good things, to treat others well in the hopes you'd be treated well in return. Unfortunately, too many people have used this as a license to treat others poorly just because they've been treated poorly themselves.

The Golden Rule is based on Matthew 7:12, where Jesus says that, in short, you should treat others the way you want to be treated.

The point of Bevere's book is offense and how to deal with it. The message is to forgive because the Bible is quite clear that if we don't forgive others, God won't forgive us. After all, fair is fair, and God is always fair and is the embodiment of that. It isn't about how wrong we've been treated or how justified we are to be mad at or upset with someone else. Judgment and justice belong to Christ alone so who are we to mete it out? It's simply not our place and by holding grudges and not forgiving someone, we are passing judgment on them by withholding our love and forgiveness from them.

Bevere hits the message home with a hard smack, as he's so good at. His writing style is simple and clear, but very poignant, frequently reminding the reader of what the Bible says about offense and forgiveness without pulling any punches.

This book is a true gem and a must for the serious Christian's bookshelf. It is also important reading for the non-Christian because, as it is with truth, truth is universal and applies to everyone.

This book is important. It is life-changing because it is based on a Word that can divide joints and marrow, and soul and spirit.

Forgiveness is important, vital to the Christian life, but this book does not give an accurate picture of the forgiveness taught by Jesus.

The premise of the book, stated in the first few pages, is this: Jesus forgives everyone, so we must forgive everyone.

Except that Jesus does not forgive everyone. Unlike love, forgiveness is conditional. He OFFERS forgiveness to everyone, but only gives it to those who have repented of their sin.

Forgiveness in the church is to work the same way. If someone who claims to be a Christian is in sin, (overlooking the small stuff) we are to confront that person in love. If they repent, then forgiveness is to be offered immediately and their offense is to be completely wiped off the books. If we can't forgive properly after someone has properly repented, then we are in sin and have our own idols to confront.

If however, the offending party does not confess their sin and clean up the mess they made (the biblical description of repentance found in Numbers 5:5-6), other Christians are not supposed to just forgive him and move on. Matthew 18 teaches that they are to confront him again in a larger group, then again by the local body as a whole, and then if they still will not make things right, they are to be turned out of the body. Those in the body are to continue to go to him and encourage him to clean things up and return, but Christians are not to be in good standing in the body of Christ when they will not repent of their sin. (1 Cor 5) Period.

This is an important process for weeding out the tares. If someone claims to be a Christian, but refuses to be held accountable after repeatedly being confronted lovingly from scripture, then he just might not actually be a Christian.

This book, based on the idea that all sin is to be forgiven and that Christians should just 'let go' of things that offend God, regardless of how rebellious the offending person is or how high up in ministry they are, is not biblical. God hates sin. He wants it addressed in His church. He says that those who don't address it frankly, share in the guilt of it (Leviticus 19:17) . This book not only teaches Christians to turn a blind eye to sin, it will lead to rampant abuse in the church where it is practiced.

Neither does it distinguish forgiveness and fellowship. If someone has sinned against us, and been turned out of the body for not repenting, then it is time for us who are offended to "forgive from the heart" (Matt 18:35), but that does not mean that fellowship is restored. It is not.

Bevere even goes as far as to give examples from his life and his ministry, where he failed to confront sin in others, even another pastor who was sinning against not just him but several people in the church, and presents them as if he was doing a good thing by not addressing the problem. He seems to feel that because it all worked out in the end, that what he did was right. Except that he was failing his God and his congregation by failing to act biblically in these situations. And how do we know that it all worked out in the end for the other people that were victims of the sinning pastor?

Further, this book calls God a sinner. One of the other premises of the book is that if you are offended, you are in sin. Jesus trashed the temple courts because He was offended that God's House was being turned into a place for profiteers. If the teachings of this book are true, then Jesus was in sin.

Not to mention that God spent pretty much the whole Old Testament being offended at the behavior of almost everyone. Anger and Jealousy are among the attributes of God. Taking Bevere's theology to its logical consequence, God Himself is in serious and habitual sin and is in need of repentance.

Forgiveness is important, but it needs to be placed in context. The theological holes in this book are big enough to drive a truck through, and there are a lot more than I have mentioned here. My brother in law gave me a copy and I returned it to him with notes on every other page bringing his attention to the problems it has. I urge Christians reading this book to get out your Bible and read the passages I have noted here.

Books like this high light the importance of having a discerning mind and running all "Christian" books through the screen of inerrant scripture. ALL of scripture.

These audio cd's are fantastic. I listen to them in the car and find myself wishing for traffic (so the ride lasts longer). I definately look at my health differently. It has really inspired me to take control of my families health and nutrition.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first round of listening to this very informative and educational lecture series and I'm still learning more every time I repeat the series. It is a wealth of information and Dr. Hyman spells things out in both medical and layman terms, providing plenty of real life examples to give the information perspective. This is a series that anyone with an open mind and desire to improve their health will benefit from.

I can't get enough of Dr. Hyman. I loved Ultraprevention, Ultrametabolism and now the Five Forces of Wellness. I tried the elimination diet he recommends and feel fantastic.

I dicovered I have a problem with digesting gluten. I feel so much better after elminating gluten from my diet. My kids are now gluten-free and are doing better in so many ways. I believe gluten should not be allowed in our food supply.

After listening to Dr. Hyman, I discovered my Thyroid levels were actually undesirable. The lab was using old information so my physician assumed my thyroid was fine. The ideal range for your TSH is between 1 & 2. Celiac Disease ( a gluten intolerance) can lead to thyroid problems. If I had eliminated gluten sooner, I probably wouldn't have a thyroid problem now.

This is an amazing book because it includes design considerations that are European and American. Northern Europe has a definite view of the aging population that is very different than that of Americans. Much more focused on wellness, physical activity, landscape as part of healing, maximizing the aging process. This book also includes American facilities that are more focused on creating a HOME for elders. Wonderful photos too. Comment made that senior residences are designed for the daughters (those who make the decision) rather than for the residents. This gives you ideas on how to change that issue... for the positive. Very good resource book.
