The second chapter, "Delineation of the Rhesus Monkey Cortex on the Basis of the Distribution of a Neurofilament Protein," consists of 64 fully labeled plates depicting an entire hemisphere. Bernard Darwin could easily have settled into a privileged life as a respected lawyer, one who also just happened to be the grandson of Charles Darwin. But his conventional upbringing didn't prevent him from choosing a different path, abandoning the relative security of the legal profession to follow his first and only passion--the game of golf. Bernard Darwin lived through, played in and wrote about the Golden Age of golf. Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Bob Jones, Glenna Collett, Joyce Wethered, Ben Hogan and beyond - he knew them all. He wrote about golf from the perspective of an accomplished player but all his stories are gems, whether about the immortals and the classic tournaments and matches or about the mere mortals who populate the game of golf. This is a wonderful selection of golf literature and I am indebted to Mr Darwin for creating it and to Mr Silverman for bringing it to us.

I've long heard about the wonderful golfing essays of Bernard Darwin, the grandson of Charles Darwin, but I've never been able to find a collection. I have now. This excellent anthology covers the breadth of Darwin's long and honored career. It is filled with writing to be savored, and how fortunate we golfers are that there exists prose of such quality, heart, intelligence and wit on the game we love so much. Whether he's profiling great golfers he saw play like Bobby Jones, Frances Ouimet, and Ben Hogan, touring courses like St. Andrews, offering a strategic tip, or just weighing in on the small, seemingly insignificant things we all think about over a round -- like why can't the group ahead move faster, or when is this string of good shots I've just hit going to end -- Darwin's words are moving, funny, lyrical and insightful. I'm thrilled someone's finally put a book like this together. i liked this book a lot but many people might not. it gave me a great sense of how people used to view this game. i love the history of golf and this book helped put the game of a hundred years ago in perspective.

Live hands is a dead book.......2005-10-10
The book promises more than it delivers. There is no real substance in it and the prose, which may have entertaining in England in the forties, is boring and frustrates one trying to get at the meat of the matter. It also seems to be a spin off of the "swing the clubhead with your hands" technique in Ernest Jones' Swing the Clubhead, which in contrast to this book, is both entertaining and instructive. By the way, the 1952 copyright edition of the Jones book is much better than the 1937 one.

This book was decent, and I learned several things I did not already know. I'm definitely glad I read it. Plus, it was a very quick read. But please note something that I did not before purchase: it was written over a decade ago, when computers were just becoming truly popular. It recommends you purchase an electric typewriter. So a few things are outdated, but it is a good book.

This book was just alright. I wasn't totally impressed with it. One thing I found out about books like this is the information becomes out dated very quickly.

I was disappointed in the lack of helpful pertintant information in this book. It seemed to be geared to someone(a child perhaps) that didn't know to "gather pencils and paper to write"

An Interesting Potential Market.......2004-01-16
Now here's something you may not have considered writing ... greeting card messages. Just pause to think for a moment how many cards there are in gift shops, newsagencies, department stores etc. Squillions of 'em ... and someone has to write all the verses in them! Why not you?
Patrisha Stauss has been doing this for a number of years and has written an informative little booklet that explains how to go about researching the market, contacting publishers and protecting your rights. She also emphasises the importance of taking a professional approach to your writing. After all, if you hope to support your brood of starving children or keep your spoilt furred, finned and feathered friends in the manner to which they have become accustomed, you need to adopt a business-like attitude.
Many of the tips Patrisha gives in her book Freelance Writing for Greeting Card Companies would apply to any type of writing, not just greeting cards. She gives a list of the basic equipment you need to set up as a professional writer and some of the ongoing costs associated. Things we tend to overlook like paper, ink cartridges, discs and then visits from your friendly, local 'puter doctor.
Because greeting card verses and messages are brief, you need to submit multiple ideas to publishers, so you really need to have a foolproof system to keep track of your submissions, and Patrisha has some practical ways you can do this in her book.

The book helped me to better understand what is expected of editors &/or greeting card companies. The material in the book was well organized. It helped me to get more organized within the realm of preparing my work for the market. This is a good business type book to get one started in pursuing a possible career in writing for greeting card companies. I found it to be very informative and recommend it to anyone who plans to be a freelance writer for greeting cards.
