The Physics of Pulsatile Flow.......2002-02-24
This is a well-written book by an expert in the field of biomathmatics and cardiovascular dynamics. I am impressed by the self-contained contents of the book and the flow of thoughts. The book introduces the fundamental physical principles and fluid mechanics before embarking on the subjects of steady flow in tubes and pulsatile flow in rigid and elastic tubes. The author leads the readers smoothly into the interesting regimes of vascular tree structures and their optimization, and the wave propagation and reflection phenomena. The relevant end-of-chapter problems are good additional sources to recapture the intended message from the text, as well as learning about other applications. Students and professionals in math, science, engineering and cardiovascular dynamics will find this text a good addition to their reading list.

A work of art, a classic, February 11, 2002.......2002-02-20
Professor Zamir's new book is an exceptionally strong, beautiful and persuasive treatise on the physics of flow through tubes and tree-shaped paths, in steady and unsteady flow. This work is fundamental physics. The mathematical treatment is authoritative and very accessible. The concepts apply not only to blood circulation, for which most of the empirical data are carefully documented, but also to other tree-shaped flows, from physiology and geophysics to optimized piping networks in mechanical and civil engineering.
This book has many strong features, all packed into a concise (no nonsense) and very well illustrated format. The issue of whether blood flow is newtonian or viscoelastic is explained from first principles: each model is valid under specific circumstances, which are identified. Very strong is the treatment of pulsatile flows through elastic tubes. Such flows consist of waves that propagate through the circulatory system, and large numbers of waves that are reflected by flow obstacles (e.g., bifurcations).
Important is that in pulsatile flow through a tree structure, the many wave reflections help the flow. They maximize the overall flow access from the heart to the entire body. This conclusion of "optimization" of flow structure is important in physics and biology in general.
Detailed measurements of the architecture of the arterial tree are condensed in this book. Graphic summaries of this architecture (e.g., Fig. 6.8.5) are so well done that they will become textbook material in the near future.
In sum, this is a masterful and inspiring book on the most important class of flows in physics, biology and engineering-flows with purpose. The structure of such flows is optimized in space and in time.
A very informative book.......2002-01-08
As a researcher with expertise in electrical engineering and specialization in the fields of digital signal and image processing "The Physics of Pulsatile Flow" was a big help in quickly understanding the basics of pulsatile flow in general. In particular, I needed to model the wall velocity of blood vessels as a function of the velocity of a viscous fluid pumped through that vessel and found a good first approach for solving this problem in chapter 5 called "pulsatile flow in an elastic tube". The references given throughout the book are also valuable to gain further insights.
I liked most that after a few minutes (or hours depending on your mathematical level of understanding) of reading, the basic principles and their solution became very clear. As we all know it is easy enough to write complicated things in a complicated manner - much more challenging is the task of using clear and easy to understand formulations. This has been masterly accomplished here by Professor Zamir and I congratulate him on this informative and instructive book. Furthermore, Dr. Zamir very quickly answered my email about a specific question of mine that was still remaining after reading the book. I really appreciated that!
An excellent book for moving boundary problems & blood flow.......2001-07-20
The Physics of Pulsatile Flow is a great introduction to the area of biofluid mechanics. Especially to those who have to solve moving boundary value problems in blood flow. It is extremely well writen so even a beginer will be able to understand fully every concept. It begins with the basic concepts & equations of fluid mechanics(Navier - Stokes, chapters 1-2)it goes on with Poiseuille flow (chapter 3), Pulsatile flowin a Rigid tube (chapter 4) and the most important chapters "Pulsatile flow in an elastic tube" (chapter 5) and "Wave reflections" (chapter 6) which has to do with waves in arterial trees. The book also presents the approach of the solution of blood flow in a rigid tube with an elliptic cross section. I didn't regreted the money I paid for it. It centerly worth it's price.

Feedback Control of Dynamic Systems (5th Edition)
ASIN: 047124547X |
Book Description
A unique, accessible guide to the application of engineering methods to biological systems.
Presenting for the first time a practical, design-oriented, interdisciplinary approach to transport phenomena involving biological systems, Biological Process Engineering emphasizes the common aspects of the three main transport processes-fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer. In clear and simple terms, it explores the relevance of these processes to broadly defined biological systems such as the growth of microbes in bioreactors, the leaching of pollutants into groundwater, and the chemistry of food manufacturing. Reaching well beyond standard applications in medicine and the environment to areas of biotechnology, aquaculture, agriculture, and food processing, this book promotes analogical thinking that will lead to creative solutions. While keeping the mathematics to a minimum, it explains principles of effective system modeling and demonstrates a wide variety of problem-solving techniques. Readers will find:
* Systems diagrams comparing and contrasting different transport processes
* Biological examples for all types of systems, including metabolic pathways, locomotion, reproduction, responses to thermal conditions, and more
* Numerous design charts and procedures
* An extensive collection of tables of parameter values, not found in any other text.
An ideal undergraduate text for biological engineering students taking courses in transport processes, Biological Process Engineering is also an excellent reference for practicing engineers. It introduces the reader to diverse biological phenomena, serves as a stepping-stone to more theoretical topics, and provides important insights into the fast-growing arena of biological engineering.

Customer Reviews:
An Expert's Opinion.......2001-09-14
"I consider it to be the best presentation of principles of flow cytometry. The text is clearly written, the figures are well chosen." -- Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz, Brander Cancer Research Institute, New York Medical College
a necessary primer in flow-cytometry.......1997-04-26
A core book designed mainly for the nonspecialist, "Flow Cytometry: First Principles" is addressing in ten chapters the essential issues in flow-cytometry, from flow machines to reagents, techniques and their applications in fundamental research and clinical settings.
The first chapters conveys us as back as the beginning of the century, when the concept of flow-cytometry germinated. Light microscopy, cell counters and ink jet technology are standing at the grounds of flow-cytometry and their merging paved the way toward the modern, "black box", flow cytometers.
However, "beyond the black box", the instrumentation and the technical aspects are comprehensively described in several chapters.
a discussion on data acquisition and analysis is provided, along with the most used cell staining procedures, fluorochromes, lenses, mirrors and lasers. A widespread application in flow-cytometry is cell labelling, particularly leukocyte subpopulations identification with monoclonal antibodies binding cell surface specific markers.
Although lymphocytes are the prototype, methods presented here -dot-plot, histogram, quadrant analysis and gating are applicable to many
other cell types , including bacteria or algae.
With the advent of some "state of the art" machines, DNA and chromosome analyses become feasible by flow-cytometry. It is foreseeable that molecular biology on flow-cytometer will not stop
to cell cycle, ploidy and apoptosis investigation, but even chromosomal translocations or point mutations would be detectable with enough precision for diagnosis.
Beside fundamental research applications, flow-cytometry is now an indispensable technique in the clinical laboratory, too. Oncology,
immunology, hematology and pathology are fields where flow diagnosis has sometimes the last word to say. Cross-match analysis and HLA
phenotyping can now rapidly be performed by flow-cytometry, with usefulness in organ and bone-marrow transplantation.
The final chapter is intended to present the flow-cytometry of the future, as seen in 1992, with an emphasis on the functional assays which are gaining now an increasing interest. However, a
precedent, "out of the stream" chapter is preparing us on what this future could look alike. It approaches some of the border-line pplications, in fields where flow-cytometry is becoming a current tool of research. These are microbiology -prokaryotic DNA and drug resistance determination-, ecology -aquatic environment, plankton, algae-, developmental biology or the functional studies -Ca2+influx.
The book is highly recommended for flow-cytometry and sorting beginners, but it is an equally pleasant lecture for people working
in many life sciences fields, eager to find out how flow-cytometry is shaping current biological research.

Book Description
Scientists, theologians, and philosophers have all sought to answer the questions of why we are here and where we are going. Finding this natural basis of life has proved elusive, but in the eloquent and creative Into the Cool, Eric D. Schneider and Dorion Sagan look for answers in a surprising place: the second law of thermodynamics. This second law refers to energy's inevitable tendency to change from being concentrated in one place to becoming spread out over time. In this scientific tour de force, Schneider and Sagan show how the second law is behind evolution, ecology, economics, and even life's origin.
Working from the precept that "nature abhors a gradient," Into the Cool details how complex systems emerge, enlarge, and reproduce in a world tending toward disorder. From hurricanes here to life on other worlds, from human evolution to the systems humans have created, this pervasive pull toward equilibrium governs life at its molecular base and at its peak in the elaborate structures of living complex systems. Schneider and Sagan organize their argument in a highly accessible manner, moving from descriptions of the basic physics behind energy flow to the organization of complex systems to the role of energy in life to the final section, which applies their concept of energy flow to politics, economics, and even human health.
A book that needs to be grappled with by all those who wonder at the organizing principles of existence, Into the Cool will appeal to both humanists and scientists. If Charles Darwin shook the world by showing the common ancestry of all life, so Into the Cool has a similar power to disturb—and delight—by showing the common roots in energy flow of all complex, organized, and naturally functioning systems.
“Whether one is considering the difference between heat and cold or between inflated prices and market values, Schneider and Sagan argue, we can apply insights from thermodynamics and entropy to understand how systems tend toward equilibrium. The result is an impressive work that ranges across disciplinary boundaries and draws from disparate literatures without blinking.”—Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-06-12
This book is excellent and should be read for those Physicochemical Professors that believe second law can not be taught without calculus. Thermodynamics is a subject demistified in this book.
Superb Science and Art.......2006-11-02
This is one of the few recent books that I am buying for friends. Schneider and (Dorion) Sagan do a marvelous job of explicating the most significant concepts behind non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Their explanation makes the subject both accessible and meaningful - an artful and rare accomplishment. And, as I am finding out, their message is enlightening for even friends with science degrees!
It has been stressed for years how the "entropy law" foretells and mandates a relentless downward spiral towards equilibrium (oblivion). Now read about the other side of the story - how the ongoing evolution of complexity gets its "sustenance" from its ability to destroy energy gradients and thus entropy becomes the essential engine and ally in the evolution of our universe and self-analytical life.
You are a GRS too!.......2006-05-24
After reading the book I added a prefix to my name, GRS - gradient reducing system. Indeed, I am a GRS with around 4 bn year history and helping nature reduce the gradient between 5800K Sun and 2.7K outer space.
If you read Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, and are wondering why the gene has got to be "selfish", then you must read this book. Its simple, when there is a gradient, nature detests it and finds a way of removing the gradient in most efficient way.
Also, this book gives insights into Ecology and how each species(including us) depends on many other species. It gives a feeling that the eastern concept of one's relationship with the whole universe, is indeed true to some extent in some sense. It also lets us understand why we need to save the rain forests at any cost, if we are indeed looking at long term survival.
Some examples for how nature tries to abolish gradient are exhilarating. After reading this book I got a feeling that Second law of thermodynamics replaces "God".
The rise of complexity in open system with energy flow, information flow is neatly explained using non-equilibrium thermodynamics(NET). Understanding the rise of life at the most fundamental level yet is so thrilling. Some mathematics would have helped but since the book is meant for a layman too, its understandable.
Very impressive effort.......2006-04-11
Works of scientific significance tend to fall into one of two categories: those that present new material, and those that reconfigure existing material into something that is new by virtue of its originality of insight. "Into the Cool" falls decisively into the second category, and Eric Schneider and Dorion Sagan have created a book that is as much concerned with philosophy of science as it is about science. The book seamlessly presents the historical and philosophical evolution of a fundamental principle (the second law of thermodynamics as applied to open systems) and develops the implications of the principle in a staggeringly wide range of contexts. In doing so, the authors have avoided the gratuitous descent into the intentionally obscure that mars so much of "popular" scientific writing, and have given us a work that is engaging, lucid and supremely approachable. Their approach risks repetition of material, and the book is not immune to that criticism. In the book's finest moments, however, the authors are able to exploit that repetition by presenting their material in a variety of contexts that collectively support the validity of their argument. In the section on economics, for example (economics in a work on thermodynamics!), the authors make a persuasive case for viewing markets as organically derived from, rather than merely analogical to, the implications of the second law. The authors' treatment of this argument requires less in the way of philosophical gymnastics than might be imagined, and their exposition makes the unfolding of the logic seem almost inevitable. Because of the richness of the material, this is a work that demands more than one reading. Fortunately, the warmth and sincerity of the writing make this book a joy, rather than the heavy going that might easily have otherwise resulted. Highly recommended.
a journey of energetic enthusiasm.......2006-04-11
if you are a reader who enjoys a book that brings together information from many different fields of science to assemble them in support of a more general idea then 'into the cool' is a book you.
ultimately this is not a book about science but a story of our micro and macro world for which the formulas and the math and the science are yet undeveloped. however, the thought experiments, analogous and philosophical, are well within the reach of a curious mind out for a scientific reward.
schneider and sagan take you on a journey of energetic enthusiasm during which, at some point, you will find yourself no longer looking in on an idea for having become the very idea yourself.

ASIN: 1423527240 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A918393. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The military is increasingly reliant on communication networks for day-to-day tasks as well as large-scale military operations. Tactical communications networks are growing progressively more complex as the amount of information required on the battlefield increases. Communication planners require more advanced tools to perform and manage signal-planning activities. This work examines the use of 3D visualizations to assist in tactical signal planning. These visualizations are developed using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), Extensible 3D (X3D) graphics, and Distributed Information Simulation (DIS) for network connectivity. These visualizations and the connectivity provide signal planners the ability to generate 3D scenarios quickly identifying problems such as frequency interference, connectivity problems, and marginal-coverage areas. Network connectivity also provides a collaborative planning environment for geographically dispersed units. The NATO Global Hub Land C2 Information Exchange Data Model (LC2IEDM) is a semantic model designed for information passing between systems. This work also examines LC2IEDM for its ability to represent tactical communication plans and facilitate the autogeneration of 3D scenarios.

Application of Maneuver-Based Control In Variable Autonomy Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A116314. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The rise in the capability and lethality of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) historically has been paralleled by an increase in the complexity of the command and control of these systems. This trend has continued with the command and control of the current fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles such as the Predator and Global Hawk. The control of these vehicles falls on the extremes on the manual vs autonomous spectrum. As the missions tasked to these vehicles increase in complexity and lethality, operators will increasingly require the ability to tailor the amount of control exercised over the vehicle. Maneuver Based Control (MBC) offers the potential to give future UCAV operators the ability to vary the autonomy of the vehicle against the amount of control they exercise over UCAV systems. The objective of this research is to validate the concept of Maneuver Based Control (MBC). This is accomplished under the umbrella of a conceptual UCAV mission. Particular attention is paid to the ability of this control scheme to increase operator situational awareness while decreasing the overall operator workload and required piloting skill. In addition, the ability to MBC to ensure effective control integrity over the vehicle is examined; ensuring that what vehicle does in response to a user's input is not divorced from the flight characteristics of vehicle.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A118923. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Current events and fiscal constraints have focused DoD planners' attention on reducing logistics costs and improving efficiency while maintaining effective combat operations support. Military leaders are seeking private industry best practices to help achieve these goals. Two commercially successful business practices that may help the DoD achieve its goals are cross-docking and Activity-Based Costing. Cross-docking is a commercially proven approach to material distribution through a distribution center that can help reduce inventories, speed material flows, and cut related logistics activity costs. However, the DoD is faced with the challenge of costing current and potential logistics processes with an antiquated costing structure. Military planners may be able to use Activity-Based Costing to answer this costing challenge and help them decide whether or not to invest in cross-docking technologies. This thesis is a proposed framework for constructing a tool that may provide managers performance and cost measurements of current military distribution center operations, and estimate expected performance and cost changes as a result of incorporating high technology cross-docking methodologies. The tool incorporates computer simulation modeling to measure the time performance, and a proposed Activity-Based Costing model to measure available versus used capacities, and costs, of existing and potential distribution processes and activities. The use of simulation for costing of activities and product cost allocation is an unexplored area of Activity-Based Costing in the literature.

Product Description
This is a ARMY WAR COLL STRATEGIC STUDIES INST CARLISLE BARRACKS PA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A592643. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The authors examine present problems with the nature of military power 30 years into the future, which must be solved before movement toward the future can make much progress. They try to find the questions, and, once having found them, to formulate a range of answers since no single answer is likely to be precisely on target. If the papers are not dramatically futuristic in approach, they are nevertheless set against a future backdrop which is still in the process of being defined. The authors have a difficult task; the task of the professional soldier in time of peace is to try to figure out the future in such a fashion that, when it arrives, he won't be so far wrong as to be unable to take corrective action quickly.
