Customer Reviews:
This book was okay.......2007-03-27
This book was okay, but there were a couple of things I didn't like. There were a couple of questions that the writer didn't answer, like what happened to Travis and Priscilla. Those are some loose ends that were not tied up. I did like the ending. I would think this book is for kids ages eight and up. There are some things that are hard to understand, and there are no pictures. I liked that there was a map in the front that tells where everything in the story is located. I would recommend this book for people that like chapter books and for people that want to learn about Florida.
Bad Book.......2006-04-04
Never read this book. It is boring. The author repeats everything over and over again.
Good Enough.......2005-11-10
This Everglades story is an interesting ecological mystery, but it's a bit too repetitive. (By now if you've read all my reviews you'll know it's one of my pet peeves.) Searching for a missing alligator the entire story is a bit too much, hm? Well, overall it's a good ecological mystery, but only if you're bored should you make the drastic decision to read it.
The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo.......2004-03-28
I have just finish reading a book call The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo. It's about a family who don't have a house yet, because they don't have enough money to build a house. The father was in another country, doing business around the world. He doesn't even know what's happening to his family. Many people say that they don't have house. Well they are, but the mother says that they were on a vacation. She always said that every time because she doesn't want people to know it. So now, their daughter named Liza K., is an adventures girl. She knows all the places in the forest. She even has an alligator friend. Now, she and her friends must save the forest from the people who want to destroy, but then, her alligator friend lost. Now, she's on an adventure to find the alligator and stop the destruction of the forest.
I think this book is good because it tells everybody how important the forest is to us. If we don't have a forest, then how can we live? How can we stay a life without oxygen? Where the oxygen come from? Oh well I think you know where it is. So this book, did, teach us something.
I recommended this book who loves to safe this world.
The Missing 'Gator of Gumbo Limbo.......2003-03-15
My story was about a missing gator. Travis is a gator hunter who is trying to shoot the gator. The gator is too big for the protection law. All the characters except Travis are trying to protect him. The main characters are Dujen, Travis, Liza K., and James James. Because he is a smart young man, James James is my favorite character. In my own life I try to be good and kind to others. James James is like this, he is always considerate and thoughtful.
I liked my book. I don't have a single favorite part; My least favorite part is the authors choice of where the characters lived at the end of book. My favorite part was that Travis didn't find Dujen.
I would recomend this book to a person who likes mysteries.

Crocodiles and Alligators
ASIN: 0816057141 |
Book Description
Perceived for too long as predatory killers, crocodilians face their gravest danger--extinction--with little human help and sympathy. As this volume proves, alligators and crocodiles can be extremely fascinating. Examine this creature's anatomy to see why it makes such a fine hunter: its almost fully submerged body remains nearly invisible, its slit eyes help it see in the dark and judge distance precisely, and its tough skin protects it against the salt water. Many societies viewed crocodiles with awe because of their power and size, and even made them a part of their folklore and religion. Information on origins, evolution and distribution, courtship, reproduction, and many individual species paint a thorough portrait. Maps of their habitats, disappearing swiftly because of environmental damage, trace their presence worldwide, and excellent color photos bring these sometimes scary reptiles up close and personal. Blandford 192 pages, 40 color illus., 80 b/w illus., 6 x 9.

The Old Woman Who Named Things
ASIN: 1890515124 |
Book Description
Aboy and his ailing grandfather pole a small boat out into the Louisiana bayou. Suddenly, they spot Boots, a female alligator the grandfather saved from poachers years ago. How will the boy face the danger in learning to take care of this wild creature? Strikingly illustrated with artwork that combines oil painting and computer imaging, Keeper of the Swamp is a scary and satisfying tale that carries a strong environmental message.
Customer Reviews:
A good book for my boys.......2005-01-06
My sons and I enjoyed reading this book aloud together. It has a lot of the elements in it that make a good story. It tugs at ones heartstrings(the grandfather part), and creates suspense. I also appreciated how the author encouraged persevering, even when something seems diffcult. He listened to the grandfathers instruction once again, and conquered his own fears, and was successfull. It shows caring for animals, and the excitement that can come from that. In the end, the boy promises to be the future keeper of the swamp, as his grandfather may not be around much longer to do so. A great read.
Beautiful Tale of Preserving Nature's Beauty.......2000-08-26
As an educator, I'm always exposed to books that interest children to varying degrees. "Keeper of the Swamp" tells such a new story in such an entertaining way, that my students were captivated by it. Our class has always loved the natural surroundings around our school and now they are fascinated with all of the wildlife it holds. The illustrations are lush and colorful. The story helps convey the importance of how a simple ritual, even a frightening one, can pass on and solidify a child's understanding and respect for nature. This book is a "Must Buy". You'll know when you see it.
This book will give lasting pleasure for kids AND adults........1999-04-28
A suspenseful coming of age story; a beautifully illustrated and written relationship between a boy, his grandfather, and the lush, but sometimes dangerous surroundings which are so much a part of their lives. This book will help kids cope with the things of which they are afraid, and help adults open lines of communication about fear, responsibility, and self-esteem. All in a fascinating, readable, vivid story.
I've never written a review before, but this book is so good.......1999-04-02
Few things inspire me enough to take action, but after thoroughly enjoying this book with my son, Christian, I had to express my praises. Two-year- old Christian is completely enthralled with alligators, so we decided to take a chance on Ms. Garrett's book. I feared that as with some of his books, he would eventually outgrow it, but I was pleasantly surprised when the book arrived. The illustrations are strikingly vibrant with color and depth; they are beautifully done. But the best part is the story. I know that Christian and I will be able to share this book together for years to come because the story has DEPTH! How refreshing for a children's book to be as interesting to the adult as it is to the child! As Christian is ready, this book introduces concepts of tradition, responsibility, environmental concerns, and even the heavier issues of terminal illness and death. I'm sorry this is sounding like a commercial, so I'll just end with saying that I'm glad we bought the book, and we look forward to Ann Garrett's next adventure! Sincerely, Wendell and Christian Walton

Book Description
A, tasty frog croaks. Delicious warthogs tromp by, Crocodile doesn't move. She hasn't eaten in weeks. But she only lies and listens. Crocodile has a secret hidden in the sand.
What could keep such a fearsome, toothy creature from hunting? This craggy crocodile is about to prove she can be as tender, devoted, and motherly as she is dangerous....
Customer Reviews:
Good read-aloud book.......2002-08-28
With the repetition of sounds -- the thump, thump, thump of galloping giraffes; the tromp, tromp, tromp of trotting warthogs; the croak, croak, croak of calling frogs; and the adorable beeeeyo, beeeeyo, beeeeyo calls of the baby crocodiles -- this book begs to be read aloud. For a good storyteller, there is a lot to work with. It's truly fun to read with the frequent animal noises happening on every page.
Sadly, I can't say the same for the story itself. It's rather bland. The suspense is contrived. Development of the plot gets lost in the author's attempt to slide in bits of information about the crocodile. The main point, the reason the Crocodile Listens, that she is listening for her babies to hatch, takes a minor role.
Even with all the fun noises, neither of my crocodile-interested boys (4 & 2.5), ask for this book much. They *do* enjoy the noises and, oddly enough, remark every time on the croc being a Nile crocodile. Beyond that, their interest wanes.

Book Description
Little Ossie is the runt of his swamp rat litter, and when a ferocious rattlesnake attacks and kills his entire family, Ossie expects the end is near. But just as Ossie is about to meet his fate, he is rescued by a very unexpected friend: Uncle Will, the oldest alligator in the swamp. Uncle Will adopts Ossie and begins to teach him the ways of the swamp. But even Uncle Will can't do anything about the terrible drought that's drying up the entire swamp-or about Bubba, a crabby old stork who claims that little Ossie is the cause of the drought. In the end, Ossie has to do what his father and Uncle Will always told him he'd have to do: find his own way.

Storytelling at its best.......2006-02-25
I first encountered "The Tale of The Swamp Rat" as a galley at an industry tradeshow, before the book itself was actually released. I read through the first couple of pages, and was hooked immediately by Carter Crocker's natural narrative style. Since then, I've read the entire book and relished every sentence. I often use this book as a teaching aid, to help my creative writing students understand just what "style" can mean to a story. Of course, it's the style and great characterizations of the swamp creatures that make this book so good. Some of my creative writing kids have complained that the story is a little slow; this is definitely a book for readers who love words and understand how magical they can be when woven together in just the right way.
an okay book.......2005-09-26
I read Tale of the Swamp Rat. I liked the book because I like fiction books. I also liked the story because they went on a big adventure and reached where they wanted to go. I like it when animals talk.
I didn't like the book because Ossie's (the swamp rat) brothers, sisters, and Mom and Dad died so quickly. They died because of a rattle snake.
I think you should buy this book because it's exciting and you don't know what is going to happen next. Will R. age 9
A New Classic.......2004-05-02
The Tale of the Swamp Rat belongs on the shelf next to Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows. It is rich in detail, well developed characters, and a plot where the villain gets his just desserts. Grab some kids and use them as an excuse to sit down and read a lovely story. It truly is a tale for kids of all ages.
The Tale of the Swamp Rat.......2004-02-08
This is a wonderful book! 5 stars most definitely!! It is about an orphaned swamp rat named Ossie. He is taken in by a freindly alligator named Old Will. Ossie is very observant and shy. So shy in fact that he doesn't talk-at all. This is a book that anybody, anywhere, any age will love!
Perfect Fireside Book!.......2003-12-06
Carter Crocker's Tale of the Swamp Rat is the perfect book for those long winter afternoons. With his down-home style, Crocker makes it easy to walk in the pawprints of little Ossie on his adventures through the fascinating wetlands of the South. In the tradition of Watership Down, Swamp Rat transforms the world of the swamp into a stunning place of legends, villains and heroes. Give it to your favorite young readers, or better yet, sit down and read it together by the fire this holiday season.
