Book Description

Each year the eerie late-summer Public Wolf Howl attracts thousands of visitors to Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park, "the wolf capital of eastern North America." Naturalist Michael Runtz has observed wolf behaviour in the park over the past 25 years. The Howls of August is an informative, personal, and highly entertaining account of one man's encounters with wolves in their natural habitat.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book!.......1999-07-14

Michael's first encounter with wolves was at age 12 and he can't get enough of them. He considers himself very lucky to have been drawn to the natural world at a young age and this beautifully written book shows it. I'm not just saying this; I really like his writing style because it's so down to earth. The timber wolf has had a bad rap and it's about time we realize its importance in the natural scheme of things. Incidentally, there's a great chapter on Algonquin Park's annual wolf howl event, which is in August. Ever been to one?

Everything you ever wanted to know about athletic recruiting when your high school coach doesn't do it for you. And here's a hot tip. You can go one better than your high school coach, Mom and Dad. Check out the opportunities at West Point. Almost everyone there is a scholar-athlete, and all on full scholarship plus getting paid [...] a year! And, best of all, if you get hurt, you don't lose your scholarship! To find out what West Point is really all about, read Norman Thomas Remick's book, "West Point". In conclusion, Wayne Mazzoni did a great job. His, "Athletic Recruiting & Scholarship Guide" is the book that tells you everything you need to know. (Unless you become interested in West Point).

5 out of 5 stars The exact information we needed.......2000-10-06

Though a little skeptical based on one person's review that the book was "lean" in terms of graphics, I went ahead and bought it. While I agree that the book is not gorgeously laid out, it has some of the best information I have ever read in a how to book. My learning curve went straight up and not only would I recommend this book to any parent but have also bought copies for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, information.......2000-10-05

While this book does not have the perfect layout of pictures, etc. that many books do, it has the only thing you really need when it comes to recruiting...an insiders perspective on the process. This book can be read in a few hours and your learning curve during this time will be dramatic. I am so much more prepared now then when I started this process.

I thought I did everything for my son that I could...When it came time for college, we just hit a brick wall. Wayne has helped us break through that wall. Step by step. Our family owes a great deal to Wayne. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-06-23

This book made it clear what we need to do. I can't wait to get started on helping my daughter get a place to play in college and a scholarship.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, Practical Advice.......2007-02-06

The Student Athlete Handbook for the 21st Century offers concise, practical advice to student athletes making the transition from high school to college.

From selecting a college, to contacting coaches, to succeeding during the all-important freshman year, the book provides a guide through a sometimes daunting process.

It's also an ideal resource for a younger athlete, perhaps a high school freshman or sophomore, who hopes to participate in college athletics and wants to get a head start.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource!.......2007-02-01

This book provided us with an excellent (and accurate) depiction of what a student athelete should be aware of as he or she gets ready for college. Other books we read (or tried to read) were so sterile and/or out of date they didn't provide any sort of relevant guidance. I _highly_ recommend Grimes' book, even for students who aren't fully sure they want to pursue a college career. You might just find it helps them realize college isn't a bad idea and isn't too hard to do and play sports at the same time!

This author of this "guide" was so desperate for filler that he actually listed the names of every college in the United States in this guide. That occupied 108 out of the 168 pages in this "guide". When you add the self-promotion pages and the other useless information, like a full page to show us what a high school transcript looks like, well, I think you get the idea. Amazon is risking their own credibility by offering this product for sale on their web site.

Although his book taught the reader a great deal about the recruiting process, I found it too elementary to read, but I don't think that this is a horrible book. However, I would recommend it to any high schoolers in need of some assistance in getting into a good college and possibly recieving a scholarship. I would also recommend Athletic Scholarships: A Complete Guide.

The goal of this book is to provide an overview of the college recruiting process by sharing knowledge that has helped me to secure NCAA Division I athletic scholarships for both of my sons, one in tennis and one in track and field. Collegiate recruiting is a business and a big business. The University of Texas' athletic ticket sales for the 2004-2005 academic year was $33,507,576. The football recruiting budget for the average Mid-American Conference (MAC) University is $90,000. For example, the Georgia Bulldogs spent $500,000 on football recruiting for its 2004 class. It will behoove any athlete to approach collegiate athletic recruiting as a business person. This book will explore several business gambits and teach strategies that will facilitate the achievement of your dream, an athletic scholarship . Learn how to negotiate from a position of power like a business person, rather than a high school athlete. . Learn how to be noticed by coaches. . Learn how to objectify your college visits and evaluations with a ranking system. . Learn what questions to ask while on campus visits. . Learn the academic requirements needed for athletic recruitment. . Learn where to find federally mandated crime statistics for individual universities. . Learn the advantages and disadvantages of early versus late recruiting dates. . Learn why red shirting can cost an athlete as much as $73,000. . Learn negotiation skills that facilitate opportunities. . Learn why you should not select a university solely on the basis of the coaching staff. . 5 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical book for the parent and student........2007-05-08

I found this book to be very helpful. I had read other books about athletic scholarships written by coaches and athletic recruiters. This book was written by a parent, from a parent's point of view, based on his personal experience working with his own kids to obtain scholarships, and he punctuates his advice with real-life examples. It was easy-to-read and offers a wealth of practical advice. The author includes sample web pages, letters, resumes, typical college visit itineraries, and a list of questions for the student to ask the coach or recruiter. I was very impressed with the section on campus crime, useful information that every parent or student should consider when picking a college. The author also includes a unique checklist to rate different colleges in a variety of factors to help the student make an objective decision on where to go to college. The book even includes practical advice on how the propective student should behave during a college visit, with details on table manners and follow-up communications. The author does an excellent job describing the incentives that influence a coach or recruiter and how the student can make his best case for a scholarship. While focusing on athletic scholarships, the author also stresses the real reason for seeking a scholarship....as a means to a good academic education. I recommend this book.

Prospect Gold is the premiere guide to collegiate athletic recruiting and scholarships for high school athletes, parents, coaches and school counselors. This book will show you how to gain immediate college exposure and get into the recruiting pipeline.

Many high school athletes believe that they will gain maximum college exposure based on talent alone. However, college recruiting budgets have been slashed. Coaches can no longer afford to scout the nation looking for talent. Instead, they focus their efforts on prospects that proactively demonstrate a desire to compete at their schools.

This book will show you a step-by-step process to generate maximum results. We will also show you how to utilize the power of the internet to accelerate your scholarship quest.

This is a must read for any high school aged student athlete.

          DOVER LISTEN AND LEARN

These CDS (which can be listened to without the book) are much more engaging than any of the above. A lot of real life situations are covered and there's a section on how to pronounce the hirigana, double consonants and long vowels --- invaluable. Also there's a small segment on colloquial (sp) speech. I wish the text used kanji though. Overall this is an amazing value and I wish they'd make an intermediate package --- with kanji.

5 out of 5 stars Great for selfpace.......2006-12-21

This is a great book for a self-pace learning. Busy with school (20 units) and working part time (35 hrs/wk), I really wanted to learn Nihongo but didn't have time to take a full course. So I searched high and low, purchasing 5 self-pace book and none was not as great as this one. The lesson are fun to read and phrases are practical. The audio CD that accompany this book was also useful as I was able to listen how pronounce word/phrases correctly.

          3 out of 5 stars It's ok for reference.......2006-02-09

This was the first Japanese book I obtained. I started working through it, but the learning curve is quite steep.

Eventually I discarded it in favour of classes using Shin no Nihongo and Japanese for Busy People. Both of these are good, and give a lot more exercises than this book, and use hiragana as opposed to romaji.

However, the dialogues in this book are good. Moreover the grammar sections give what I consider good explanations, although if you get a grammar book as I later did, you'll find them a bit limited.

Bottom line: it is a good reference book and quite cheap.

          5 out of 5 stars Simply.... WOW.......2006-01-21

**note, amazon sometimes recycles user reviews to other editions of a book. This review is intended for the newer edition with the red fan on the front-- but I have seen it posted on an older edition that is black with several small pictures of japan on the cover like mt. fuji, sushi, etc. I have never seen or used this book. It might be ok, or it might not--thats why i DIDNT review it**

I ordered some new books to help teach my visiting mom japanese, and preview texts for the beginners Japanese courses I am planning and this one stood out as a must have for students of Japanese. Especially Students who are working on their own.

I do not recomend this book to an absolute beginner who has no native speaker/or experienced learner to consult because while the book does start with the basics, it moves a little quickly.

What sets this book apart is that it uses both a dialouge/contextual format to put the target vocab/structures in a natural context, and a standard grammatical annalysis where you learn how to change the various parts of a sentence pattern to manipulate meaning in an academic way.

I like both the Berlitz Essentials Book, and the Hugo's Japanese in 3 months--

Berlitz while using dialouges that sound semi-natural and rather creative review activities, by the end of the book the student can express things in the past/pres/future and hypothetical but is not grammitacally equipped to understand all the other shades of meaning that japanese has that don't fit so nicely into english categories of expression that japanese speakers just use naturally.-- basically japanse people will understand you just fine, but you might not be able to understand them.

Hugo on the other hand has some good grammar, but it's useage and word choice can at times be too formal, or stilted. While near the end there is a small section on natural useage and abbreviated forms, they are for the most part ignored so that the new grammar patterns can be discussed clearly without digressing into all the possible forms one thought could take depending on whether it is a man/woman at work or with friends talking carefully, or very casually. It can be a very hard book to work through if you are not motivated to study grammar, even though it is a gem because it has no interesting characters to follow (Mr. Brown has no personality).

Teach yourself on the otherhand presents the most natural Japanese I have come across in any textbook. My friends and wife actually sound like this. It utilizes the device of following a circle of people who are different ages/social status so that a wide range of politeness levels can be demonstrated in believable situations. Also, these characters aren't perfect, they don't always say nice things, or like everything. The sister/brother dialouge at the end of the book is so funny because the she cons the bro into cleaning the house, and you get to hear him rant about how horrible a person his sister is.

Another point is, it clearly points out how in daily conversation certain forms are rarely used like they are in a textbook but are expressed in other ways. This is important because it trains the listener to hearing these alternative forms, and prepares them for discussions with real native speakers. It also uses some slang-ish vocabulary that is often not mentioned in textbooks like dekai, alongside its more well known alternative Okii. It teaches both, not just one or the other, which is the best way.

There is even a short segment on how to form/identify some basic insults. Nothing gratuitous, or out of proportion. But it was refreshing to see in a book.

And importantly, the excercises in the book are actually interesting. they have you role play interesting scenarios like you are a lazy student, and explain to your mom how you got/made others do your errands/chores for you by using the appropriate verb forms. --I loved the question where the mom asks you if you bought her cigarettes yet, and you are told to say that you made your little brother go and get them.... the little touches of humor make the book fun to work through.

As to possible criticisms, yes this book moves a little quickly because it introduces several new grammar points at once, and then discusses them afterwards, but a new student should work through something else first, or find a native speaker to help them work through it.-- if they expect to learn Japanese with only one book, their expectations need to be adjusted.

two- this book only has about 20-30@kanji in it, and they are mostly used for art. This book is about conversational Japanese. You can learn some complex grammar here, but don't look for reading practice-- you will be dissapointed. If Kanji is that important to you-- transfer the dialouges and example sentences in to Kanji-- its a great chance to practice.

-- as for the cd version. Good, but basic. It goes through the dialouges with native pronunciation, though I think at a little less than normal speed. The best part is that at the end of each chapters track-- there is a little Pimsleur-esque review section where you are asked to take part in a role play by responding to questions based on certain audio prompts, or answer questions in the positive/negative and conjugate verbs into differnt forms. Honestly, I wish there were more of these types of questions on the CDs, but they are good. And at 20 dollars for the set vs 900 for pimsleur, its a good deal.

The only student who may not want this book is someone planning on living in the kansai area, where the spoken japanese is pretty different from that here in the Tokyo area. the language in this book is so Natural to the tokyo area (not just standard japanese which is based on the tokyo dialect) but actually employs contractions, vocabulary, and grammatical variations that would mark you as being from the Kantou area. But, it would really have to be important to you, otherwise... buy this book already!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Just not what it was hyped to be.......2005-11-15

I bought this expecting the dialogue to go hand in hand with the book(I need to see and hear what Im learning) and it doesnt. The dialogue on the CD jumps around and then suddenly goes to the next chpater, meanwhile youre left with an entire chapter that youre not quite sure what to do with. Maybe if I had plenty of time to try to sort this book out Id be ok, but I would like to learn Japanese-not learn how to understand and read a book that supposedly is going to eventually teach me something.

5 out of 5 stars excellent guide for beginners.......2003-06-21

This is an excellent guide for beginners, although I do recommend you get the version that comes with audiocassette so you can hear some spoken Japanese. The course starts with very short, basic reading(mostly conversations), and includes vocabulary. It explains grammar indepth and also some interesting things about Japanese society. The exercises are very thorough and have you constructing your own sentences, a MUST if you want to get by in conversational japanese; books that simply throw phrases at you without practice in forming your own sentences will have you grasping for phrases in the middle of conversation(the Living Language series for example).
Overall this is an excellent book that I recommend to beginners learning Japanese. If you have learned before but don't remember much this is also a good choice to help get you back.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-06-07

This is an excellent introduction to Japanese! The book only covers roma-ji, but after learning what's in this book kana is no problem. Overall, a wonderful start in conversational and non-conversational Japanese.

Wow.. I was getting nowhere with the hiragana, but this book changed it I could not believed that I learn it in just 1 day.. (3 hours it says, but I had to work so I took longer breaks). Is no joke I am still Amazed. I highly recommended.. I will help you for sure..

5 out of 5 stars Best way to learn Japanese alphabet!.......2004-08-27

This book offers a fabulous and easy way to learn the difficult Japanese alphabet characters. Heisig offers imaginative word pictures to help the reader learn to both pronounce and write the Hiragana characters. If you are serious about learning Japanese, this book is for you! I recently began taking a college level Japanese class, in conjunction with my own personal study using Heisig's book. While my college-level teacher is helpful, I am finding that Heisig's book makes learning the alphabetic characters about 10 times faster than if I simply tried to memorize the alphabet on my own. Purchasing Heisig's book has been a great investment for me as I learn Japanese!

            2 out of 5 stars A Last Resort.......2002-01-09

The biggest failing of this book is that the "alphabetical" order is treated as an afterthought, sing a song to yourself and you can remember it. In fact this is extremely important and would create a huge problem.

I'd suggest at least trying the old fashion approach, learning from a chart of all the characters. Those characters you can't remember or confuse make up your own system.

            5 out of 5 stars A great book, but don't buy it.......2001-08-13

Using clever mnemonic devices, this book quickly teaches native English speakers to read and write the hiragana, one of the two Japanese syllabaries. (A syllabary is like an alphabet, only each symbol stands for a whole syllable.) I can't imagine a better way to learn the hiragana than this.

But don't buy this book. It has been superseded by Heisig's "Remembering the Kana: The Hiragana / The Katakana," which is simply Heisig's hiragana and katakana books (both out of print) bound in one cover. To read and write Japanese, you have to learn both syllabaries (plus kanji, the Chinese characters adopted by the Japanese), so you might as well get the book that teaches both.

            5 out of 5 stars So easy!.......2001-06-11

I cant say it loud enough, this book is a great buy for anyone who is about to start learning Japanese. In the time it takes to go throught this book, you really learn to read hiragana. Its wonderful.
