Customer Reviews:
helping hand.......2007-06-08
this is a great cd. you just listen to it and follow the instructions and can actually learn to meditate. great
breathless.......2007-04-12
This CD was recommended to me and I have heard good things about Dr. Weil, but I have to say the CD's were a let down. The lecture was too long and i thought it would have been better to simply be text. The actual breathing exercises were not that inspiring and quite short. Although it was instructional to go through the breathing exercises along with the CD it would have been better if that part was expanded.
Enjoyable and highly usable.......2006-02-24
Terrific 2 CD set - enjoyable to listen to, highly informative, short and sweet. You are on your way to using the techniques immediately. Nice addition to my "arsenal" of self-healing techniques.
Great for Beginners.......2005-11-06
I am just a beginner at Meditation, and I am trying to learn this for my health.
I think this is a good CD to listen to if you are just starting out. I got some good ideas from this recording, and I am sure I will be able to use what they taught.
Good introduction to meditation.......2005-03-29
This is a solid introduction to the practice of meditation. The first disc features Weil and Kabat-Zinn giving background information about meditation. The second disc features guided meditations. Like any spiritual practice, the more information an individual gets, the better he or she becomes at that practice. This set of discs is a good starting point that will get a person going into meditation immediately, which might lead the listener to pursue additional materials about spirituality.

Book Description
Imagine achieving physical fitness and spiritual growth simultaneously. Roger Joslin's step-by-step program is an engaging exploration of the truth that spiritual well-being is as likely to happen while running, as it is within the more traditional settings of neighborhood churches, synagogues, or mosques. Through awareness, chants, and visualization, and through attention to the present moment--the weather, pain, or breathing---a simple run can become the basis for a profound spiritual practice.
Customer Reviews:
When You Can't Sit Still for Zazen or Prayer... .......2007-06-12
Austin-based Roger Joslin has written an excellent book for runners who want to bring a new and deeply spiritual dimension not only to their running but to their lives as a whole. My copy is dog-eared, highlighted and annotated to a fare-thee-well. It's a great book.
Although Joslin is an Episcopalian, he brings a number of different spiritual disciplines to the task of "connecting" with (as he calls it) "the Transcendent," the "One" - i.e., God by any other name. Drawing on various practices and techniques of Buddhist meditation, Eastern Orthodox and Islamic chant and prayer, (Western) Christian contemplative practice, Joslin weaves together a practical approach to meditation "on the run" that any spiritually-minded person (even if you're not spiritual in a formal, religious way) can adapt to his or her running program. He breaks runs (especially "out and back" runs) into "stages" that help you prepare for a meditative run, get you into a calm and aware meditative state during the run, and help you extend and enhance the physical and spiritual blessings of a meditative run during cool down when the "running" portion is finished. He draws chiefly on his own experiences, observations and learning, and includes a number of extended passages from his journal that I thought were both interesting and motivating, especially his accounts of runs in New Mexico and rural Texas. Meditative running doesn't shut you off from your surroundings; as Joslin explains (and he's right, in my experience), you connect more to the place and the moment and to a deeper appreciation of your body as you propel yourself through space and time.
If you're looking for a book that will add a new dimension to your running, and that may, perhaps help you realize a deeper and closer relationship with God (assuming you believe in a Supreme Being), "Running the Spiritual Path" will inspire and challenge you.
On the other hand, if you're looking for yet another training manual that will help you run more competitively (faster, farther, longer), don't waste your money. If you're an atheist, an agnostic, a non-deist, or Christopher Hitchens, don't waste your money. If reflections on spirituality, and particularly, Christian spirituality make you uncomfortable, don't waste your money. Likewise, if you're a Christian fundamentalist, you will probably be put off by Joslin's inclusion of prayer and meditation practices from non-Christian paths and any characterization of God as other than the Trinity.
Finally, you might want to read the following books, either as an entrée to Joslin's book or in conjunction with it because they will help you appreciate the "spiritual building blocks" Joslin brings to the subject: Thich Nhat Han's "The Miracle of Mindfulness"; Jon Kabat-Zinn's "Wherever you Go, There You Are"; (Father) Thomas Merton's "New Seeds of Contemplation"; "The Essential Rumi," edited and translated by Coleman Barks; and the Russian classic, "The Way of a Pilgrim" (any recent translation will do). Oh, and don't forget the Bible.
From a Mounain Biker.......2003-08-13
As a mountain biker interested in the spiritual connections associated with my favorite activity, I was intrigued from the outset upon learning that there was a new book out that explored the meditative and spiritual aspects of running. "Running The Spiritual Path" by Roger D. Joslin is highly recommended to anyone who has ever happened along on his or her own path and felt any kind of spiritual pull and might wish to develop it further. This book can help you to go beyond traditional ways of communication with your creator. By using your breath and other methods explored by the author you may very well develop and heighten your own spiritual senses, a most rewarding goal. Personally, I believe that this breakthrough book is tangible evidence of the ongoing process of a kind of spiritual evolution finally being recognized in the world today. Pick up this book and run with it! You'll end up much farther along than the trailhead from where you usually start your own run.
A rich and thought-provoking book.......2003-08-08
If you are a runner, you may have experienced the mental benefits that running provides. You may have also felt a spiritual presence while running, perhaps saying a prayer or working through personal problems while on the trail. In this extraordinary book, Joslin explores this mind/body connection and gives many different ways to experience the spiritual side of the sport. He shares meditative techniques developed over many years and very rich personal experiences with excerpts from his running journal. The book is well thought-out and written with a great deal of humility and care. This is one that I will read again and again. It changed the way I approach running. I also think about this book throughout the day, even when I am not running. A great book!

Book Description
According to early yogic teachings, your breath is a direct means of unifying and purifying consciousness. On Chakra Breathing Meditations, Layne Redmonda Drum! magazine Drummer of the Yearshows listeners how to tap into this ancient technology through simple breathing practices combined with movement and music. This new home-practice program includes: yogic breathing to achieve an expanded state of awareness, seated meditations to activate each of the seven chakras, and a walking and breathing meditation accompanied by spirited drums and music, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Best Ever.......2006-03-21
This cd to my mind is extremely well put together and is easily one of the best cd's of it's kind that I have purchased in a long time. Essentially it starts you off very gently, (Laynes' voice is very calm and soothing) and evently leads you into a full walking and breathing meditation combined with the accompliments of drums to syncronise your breath to. It is very powerful. It takes a little bit of practice to sucessfully combine both walking, breathing and visualizing the chakras simultaneously but it is well worth persuing. I really love this cd as it really does unify both breath, body and mind. Would highly recommend it.

Book Description
Run, walk, or even bicycle without fatigue! That seems the impossible dream for athletes, but Dr. Justin O'Brien, a runner and a yogi, reveals in this book a unique style of sport training that does just that. Trade paper. Inspired by the yogis of the Himalayas, who run fifty miles a day up and down mountainous terrain, O'Brien was intrigued to find out how they could sustain arduous endeavors while remaining tireless. So, he experimented with the breathing and yoga techniques he learned from Swami Rama, an extraordinary Himalayan master, applied them to his conventional running training and gradually assimilated them into an exciting new method.
Customer Reviews:
Not for experienced runners.......2006-03-20
The book is interesting, and well written. It contains little unique or scarcely known or understood information. Novice runners might like it and get more from it than experienced runners.
Not for experienced runners.......2006-02-24
I bought this book thinking that it would tell me about breathing and running. Sort of what you would expect from the title.
In fact Dr Justin O'Brien has precious little to say about the subject, and I am at a loss to understand what "many athletes -- from Boston marathoners and national swimmers to international tennis players and Olympic badminton stars" have got out of it. None of these are named, nor provide testimonials, apart from one ultra-runner on the back cover blurb. Dr O'Brien's PhD is in the philosophy of consciousness.
The entire approach can basically be summed up with the words "train don't strain". Breathe easily, steadily and rhythmically using diaphragmatic breathing. Practise until you can breathe out for twice as long as you inhale, while running. Let your breath guide your degree of effort. That's it.
I can only think that this has been written for absolute beginners. It is out of date (written in 1985) and, for the experienced runner, packed with totally superfluous chapters such as "Why Run?", and "Internal Dynmaics" (ie what changes occur in the body as a result of running. There are also worthy, but out of date, chapters on injuries, flexibility and diet.
Not worth the money. The topic is better covered elsewhere, notably in John Douillard's "Body, Mind and Sport".
A highly practical, health-conscious wellness guide.......2003-02-14
Running & Breathing by running expert and wellness pioneer Justin O'Brien (Adjunct Faculty, University of Saint Thomas, Saint Paul and The University of Saint Mary, Minneapolis, and Preceptor, Institute of the Himalayan Tradition), is a supplemental resource highly recommended for runners everywhere, as it covers the dynamics of running and controlling one's breathing through yoga techniques (as well as other aspects) in order to get the best out of a physical workout. A highly practical, health-conscious wellness guide, Running & Breathing is also highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to run, walk, bicycle, or engage in any other extended physical activity requiring breath control for optimum performance and benefit.
A Must Read.......2002-12-09
Incredible technique that works for running, walking, swimming, bicycling, etc. This breathing technique not only increases your endurance but also over all vitality and integration of intent with body.

Oxford Pocket American Dictionary of Current English (New Look for Oxford Dictionaries)
ASIN: 0195130979 |
Book Description
A unique new reference that combined the best features of both dictionary and thesaurus, The Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus was the first American reference work to offer integrated dictionary and thesaurus entries. Now this revolutionary volume is available in a convenient paperback format that is perfect for the casual user. Rather than forcing readers to flip between the thesaurus for synonyms and the dictionary for definitions, The Pocket Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus provides a thoroughly integrated blend of entries from the dictionary and the thesaurus. This unified approach treats meanings and related words within the same entry, making it easy to find an abundance of information about any word, and provides a far more thorough analysis of the variety and nuances of our language than is possible in a dictionary or thesaurus alone. Light and portable, sized to fit easily into a backpack, briefcase, or on any student or office desk, The Pocket Oxford Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus is guaranteed to be the most frequently used reference work you own. Combining a comprehensive and thoroughly reliable dictionary of American English with full thesaurus coverage, this is an essential tool for anyone who wants to write with more variety, color, and precision.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing resource.......2007-06-18
I initially purchased this volume to use as a pocket dictionary, but it was obvious once it arrived that it would not fit in any pocket I possess in my apparel collection, yet this is not a strike against it! I find myself consulting this useful tome more than regular sized dictionaries or my computer which has a handy dictionary/thesaurus feature. So comprehensive are the definitions in this pocket dictionary that I have hardly ever had to consult this little guy's big brother, the full sized Oxford dictionary, now gathering dust on my bookshelf.
I highly recommend this volume for anyone from high school to graduate school. The dictionary and thesaurus are well thought out and very accessible. The paperback binding is also quite durable and I do not anticipate any problems such as pages falling out or the spine breaking. My copy is over a year old, consulted almost daily, and it is still happy to oblige with a definition!
An amazing book and tool!.......2006-07-04
This is a very helpful tool for every designer in all kinds of brain storming sessions, where both the dictionary and thesaurus are used at the same time...
Ideas simply flow and develop as both meaning, and synonym are revealed.
Not to mention that it's compact, however, very rich in content.
Simply, wish there were more such books.
Pocket Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus.......2005-09-13
Bought as a gift for my son. He said this is the most helpful book, for his class work, that I have sent him in last two years.
Excellent Dictionary (not for your pocket).......2001-04-24
I bought this dictionary/thesaurus a few years ago for college, and have used it well. While it won't fit in your pocket, it will fit in your book bag, and I was more than happy to sacrifice the extra weight for a few more definitions and synonyms. And, while this is much more detailed dictionary than any other "pocket" dictionary I have come across (which typically fit in your pocket), it is certainly not THE definitive dictionary you'll want to own. I have come across a few words in my studies that have not been listed in this dictionary, and that I had to find at home (in a behemoth edition that fits on a CD-ROM). All in all, a great buy--best portable dictionary you will find. (Weight: 970 grams; 2 lbs, 2 1/2 oz. For those of you planning on taking it hiking.)
Excellent dictionary/thesaurus for your high school student........2001-03-15
I would like to say that this book is excellent for students with hard courses in high school. It's a pretty good size to fit in your backpack although I wouldn't call it pocket size, I would call it backpack size :). They also have a special reference section where they give you basic information such as country/capital, states, metric conversion, etc... All in all a very excellent purchase that would benifit your education.

Customer Reviews:
Well, what did you expect--it's an Oxford!.......2007-03-21
Not surprisingly, I found this dictionary to have everything I needed--and more! The book is larger than I expected, but then I should have known that "compact" means something different for Oxford than it does for other dictionary publishers (some of whom publish dictionaries with the type so small, I can hardly read them). Oxford uses a typeset with lots of white space which, of course, makes it much easier to read. In addition to the words, the tutorial on "Effective Writing for College and Career" makes this dictionary one that professors can use to prepare students for the rigors of college and business writing.
All in all, if you want a compact (by Oxford standards) dictionary of the highest quality, get this edition. You can't lose!
The biggest problem for senior users........2007-03-12
I expected this dictionary so much until I got it, for the former edition was quite attractive, useful and handy.
But this second edition has smaller and thin fonts, thus the Readability is much worse than the former one.
Why do they layout like this? - they leave too much empty outer space.
It's a pity.

Student Reference.......2006-03-12
It's the best Thesaurus I have used in writing term papers for college.
Should work fine for most people.......2003-02-04
This is a very nice thesaurus. It is not altogether as complete as one might hope, but should serve the needs of most students who don't need to do really extensive writing.
excellent helper.......2002-05-02
this book has 15,000 entries and over 350,000 synonyms and a writer's toolkit. With Oxford, we all know how respected it is, but what impressed me most was the superior print face. This thesaurus did not make me go blind trying to read it. The paper is high quality that will withstand constant use of a writer, and provides excellent contrast, and in easy to read fonts.
I am sorry, don't care how good the dictionary is, if it is not made to prevent eyestrain it gets low marks for me. This one gets an A+ and a big THANK YOU for that quality.
A MUST FOR EVERY HOME AND OFFICE.......2001-08-20
Assiduously edited this thesaurus offers up to the minute listings of words we use, hear or read everyday. Included are 15,000 main entries and some 350,000 synonyms with notations that make clear the subtle nuances of inference among several closely related words.
Headwords, presented in alphabetical order, are in eye friendly bold print. Following each headword is its part of speech, such as "accredited" is followed by "adjective."
When a certain word has the same spelling but a different meaning, which is known as a homograph, each meaning is treated as a separate word. Thus "bank" us found as "a grassy slope" and as "financial institution" under separate headings.
Synonyms are included in each listing, and the volume contains a punctuation guide, a usage guide, as well as a listing of easily confused words.
At sea as to the proper usage of "alternate" and "alternative"? Just keep this handy volume at the ready.
Wordsmiths will delight in the clarity and presentations of words in this thesaurus, and all of us will benefit from its use.
Oxford American Thesaurus of Current English.......2000-06-20
I found this thesaurus to be an excellent addition to any reference collection. It is comprehensive and takes all synonyms into account. There is a definite American bias but is serves it's purpose. With 15,000 main entries and over 350,00 synonyms, this thesaurus is the only one you will need.

Suggestion a good surce.......2006-03-26

Exquisite images from a civilization ignored by the West.......2002-01-24
Mention the words "Safavi" or "Safavid" to people in the West and you will most likely get a blank stare in return, but this Iranian dynasty presided over a great cultural flowering in literature and architecture as well as in art. Stuart Cary Welch produced a beautiful introductory guide to some of the beauties of that era, taking illustrations from several famous books and collections of the 16th century height of Safavid glory. While the political history of the time in Iran, Central Asia and Afghanistan (all parts of the Persian world in a cultural sense) was full of battles, massacres, sieges and sudden changes of rule-very much like Europe at the same time-the delicacy of Persian art knew no bounds. Brilliant, jewel-like colors, striking designs, and bold displays of mythical heroes touched in gold and surrounded with the miniature figures of the Persian court world appear on the pages of this book that is guaranteed to satisfy. Chinese-style rocks and trees mingle with Islamic calligraphy and Persian legends. While this book reproduces the illustrations both in full and in detail, the text is only the slightest of introductions to what can be a consuming study for any lover of art at its greatest. Buyers of this book will want to look further. May I suggest Anthony Welch's two books "Artists for the Shah" and "Shah `Abbas and the Arts of Isfahan", "Persian Drawings" by B. W. Robinson, and "Persian Painting" by Basil Gray. Another related volume, a treat for anyone interested in Persian art, would be "Isfahan: Pearl of Persia" by Wilfred Blunt and W. Swan.
Beautiful, accessible introduction to an exquisite artform.......1999-03-08
Stuart Cary Welch is an art historian (I think he taught at Harvard, but I'm not sure) who loves his work, and it clearly shows in this volume. The pictures are exquisite, the reproductions are beautiful, but the best part is the commentary: his only goal is to make the work -- and the stories the pictures tell, for they are all essentially book illustrations -- as much a pleasure to the audience as it was to him. He could not wear his learning more lightly nor with more enthusism, and yet it is clear he must know everything there is to know about this culture. Right after you get this, you'll immediately go right back to Amazon to get a copy of the Shah-Nama, the marvelous epic Iranian poem that so many of the splendid miniatures in this volume illustrate.
