Book Description

Every creature has body shape and uses mode of locomotion that is most economical for the way of life it has developed through natural selection in response to severe environmental conditions.--Akira Azuma

Through study of locomotion of living creatures, Akira Azuma has come to the conclusion that every creature is made and moves in a manner that is best suited to their environmental conditions. Thus, one purpose of this book is to shed light on the physical relationships among habitat, form, way of life, and mode of movement in living creatures.

The text also reviews results of theoretical and empirical research carried out by various scientists over the years.

Each of the two main parts of the book, Flying Dynamics and Swimming Dynamics, is written from the viewpoint of mechanics, specifically fluid dynamics, rather than from the viewpoint of physiology and ecology. Thus the chapters and sections are organized according to mechanical, not biological principles.

The book will be useful not only to engineers working and studying fluid and flight dynamics, but also for biologists using mechanical analyses to gain a better understanding of the behavior of animals and the mechanical functions of the body parts in relation to their forms and modes of locomotion.

5 out of 5 stars The mechanics of biological movement in air and water.......2006-06-06

There used to be a story that it was easy to prove that a Bumblebee couldn't fly, but that the Bumblebee couldn't read so he went ahead and flew anyway. It's clear that if a Bumblee could read, then this book would explain exactly how it is that it does fly.

Specifically this book is about the mechanical aspects of how living creatures move through the media of air and/or water. To an extent it talks about the environmental habitat and the ecology of the animal or plant, but it's primary concern is the mechanics of how it moves through the air or water. It includes everything from spores and polen that float through the air, to whales. It treats these biological 'machines' using many of the same terms that come from aeronautics: drag, lift, force, power, structure, airflow, Reynolds Number and so on. The theories that have been learned about aircraft are applied to what happens when a birds wing beats, or a fish's fin moves. The book is mathematically rigorous at a level through at least integral calculus.

This is the second edition of this book, revised and updated from the very difficult to find 1992 edition.

    Book Description

Aquatic organisms swim in a variety of ways, from jet propulsion to ciliary action. One of the most fascinating aspects of aquatic locomotion is the remarkable sets of adaptations that have evolved for different purposes. This volume brings together current research on a wide range of swimming organisms, with an emphasis on the biomechanics, physiology, and hydrodynamics of swimming in or on water. Several chapters deal with different aspects of fish swimming, from the use of different "gaits" to the operation of the locomotor muscles.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book!!.......2002-12-02

A fantastic book and on the "top two" of my recommended reading list for beginning triathletes. If you are going for detail and want in-depth and technical information on how to develop a training plan, go with the Triathlete's Training Bible. If you want a solid overview of the sport of triathlon, this is the book for you.

Swim, Bike, Run is written in a very straight-forward style and gives sound, practical advice. I am an avid reader of "things triathlon," so I've read just about every book out there. The most telling insight into how much I value this book is that this is the book that I consistently return to and read the night before a race. I also look to it for a "refresher" when I want to improve form/technique and when I am evaluating how my training is going mid-season. The swimming section is particularly effective and the illustrations greatly helped me on technique issues.

A great read and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars An Average Overview of Triathlons.......2002-06-06

This was the 1st triathlon book I bought. It gives an overview of the equipment, types of training in chapters on swimming, running and riding, time requirments, nutrition and sample training plans.
It is NOT a training book perse. It will give the reader an idea of what it takes to start triathloning without overwhelming him and her.
I think Triathlon 101 is better but it's a personal opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, few problems........2002-03-18

I found this book to be fairly helpful. I especially liked the descriptions of form drills for all 3 disciplines. The informaiton was useful. What I did not like is that since I am new to the sport of triathlon, there were phrases used that I did not understand. This was most evident in the workouts. The text would describe everything well, but then in a listing of a sample workout it would use terms not explained in the text. This made it hard to figure out what to do sometimes. Also the author says he'll show you how to have many peaks in a season, but then really doesn't ever give that information.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent content, a little misguided.......2001-09-20

I always find myself buying triathlon training books, then ending up being disappointed because I haven't learned anything new from it. This book falls prey to that sometimes (EVERY triathlon book has a chapter devoted to nutrition that goes over carbs, protein and fats), but it also contains a lot of really good information about technical aspects of each sport (like how to handle hills and cornering on your bike), really planning a good training program to meet your own needs (in terms I could follow), and lots of other stuff that I'd never seen in the dozen or so other books I've looked at. There is even a section on preparing for specific distances, during different seasons.
There are no references for any of the information given, so it is an easier read, but you don't know where the authors gathered the information from, which worries me a little. What concerned me even more was that some of the information that was given can actually be dangerous--the list of suggestions to make long runs more interesting included running with headphones and running at night--without any caveats.
This book was worth the money just for the new info I picked up, but make sure to use some common sense when it comes to using the advice. It might be better to use this book as a complement to other resources.

    Book Description

Most books written about the sport of triathlon are pretty serious-Triathlon 101, Triathlon Training for Women, or Triathlon Training on Four Hours a Week. When I began training to become a triathlete, I looked for books that related to my life situation but could find nothing like Triathlon Training for the Married, Sleep-Deprived Father of Three or How to Do an Ironman without Training at All. When I decided to write a book about the sport of triathlon and the Ironman experience, my goals were simple: 1. Provide myself with another excuse to skip some long training runs. 2. Address significant questions that a triathlete contemplates when sitting in a porta-potty before an Ironman race: Is it really necessary to put Vaseline on my nipples before the run? How can I tell if my kidneys have failed? What should I say to the people just coming out of T2 as I'm finishing the race? 3. Give something back to the sport, which has given me an appreciation for the delicate art of leg shaving, the joy of getting up at 5:00 a.m. on a regular basis, and that persistent feeling that no matter how much training I have done, I haven't done enough.

1 out of 5 stars Not funny at all.......2006-06-01

I think the other reviewers must be related to the author. I bought this book on a whim and haven't so much as chuckled once. Save your money - or better yet, write your own book based on your personal triathlon experiences... that's all this is.

5 out of 5 stars Swim, Bike, Run, Laugh!.......2005-08-17

If you are looking for what runs in the soul of an Ironman to be...you have the right book. I read this book on my way back from finishing the San Diego 1/2 marathon and could immediately feel the training pains of the author. The training, explaining to my wife the increasing cost of harware I "must have," and the time invested to support my next phase of the triathlon building block - the duathlon hit home. I am where Dave was on "do I swim or drown thoughts". Turning the switch to become a Triathlete let alone a Ironman is a mighty switch to pull. Dave-good for you! Keep it up and one day you may see me - probably at the second transition when you are finishing. Just smile and urge me on; I know it was from the heart.
PS: I hope my laughing did not keep the other passengers awake!

5 out of 5 stars If you hate laughing....don't read this book!.......2005-08-17

Whether you are a multi-sport enthusiast or not, this book is for you. Everyday so many people do "multi-sport" activities in their daily lives. If you juggle work and kids, if you juggle being a stay at home mom with kids, if you juggle career and volunteer activities, or if you are an amateur or elite triathlete, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!
Dan Madsen has a way of making you look at yourself through his trials and tribulations of becoming an Ironman and laugh out loud because whether you're racing in your car to pick up the kids or racing in a triathlon, we all think the same basic things. "How dumb do I look right now?", "How do I know if this headache isn't a disease?" "People just don't understand why I do the things I do." "I am my own entertainment for others laughing greed!" Regardless, you won't be able to put this book down. I read it on a business trip while flying up the east coast. I was trying so hard to contain my laughter that I actually snorted out loud!! The guy sitting next to me begged me to share what I was reading. By the end of the flight we were laughing so hard the flight attendant (jokingly) threatened to take my book (probably for her own entertainment).
If someone read this book and didn't laugh then he is either dead, illiterate, or a total drip that needs to buy a sense of humor and go make some friends.
Outside of owning a home and a car (2 very important needs), you need this book (your 3rd need). Then your life will be complete.
Get ready to laugh out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Laughed all the way to being inspired........2005-08-16

Funny!! I don't believe that I turned a single page prior to burst-out-loud cacklings.

This book MUST UNSHACKLE ITSELF from the confines of only those interested in the sport of triathlon. In fact, I highly doubt that any one-dimensional triathlete would find it all that funny. But for the husbands and fathers of the world, this should be required reading - even if you have no interest in this sport whatsoever.

Yes, the predominant theme is the sport, but creatively woven throughout are hilarious portraits of family, marriage, parenthood, and friendship. This guys natural knack for good, clean storytelling is evident, and just about perfectly skewed.

For those who would never consider doing something so "silly" as swimming 2.5 miles, biking 112 miles, and finishing the day by running a marathon; don't be tempted to believe this book is not for you. If you already struggle with too many commitments and not enough time, then you'll find common ground with this author.... Where you might not find common ground is that he augmented his life's schedules with that little bitty goal of finishing one of the most grueling endurance races that this world has ever known - and this makes for the comical magic of this read.

    Great Job, Dan.

2 out of 5 stars Not very amusing..........2005-08-11

Looking at the title I expected amusing anecdotes and maybe even a tri joke or two. I was disappointed and not amused. I barely broke a smile throughout the entire book.

This was an inferior version of "Becoming an Ironman : First Encounters with the Ultimate Endurance Event", which is an excellent read.

    4 out of 5 stars a classic.......2002-08-01

This book is key in begining a triathlon lifestyle. The calculations that are required for the year-round training program seem labourous but once you get started, it is well worth your time. The section on bike maintenance is simple and includes most everything to make you feel like you've been doing the sport for years. Great!

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2002-02-15

This is a good book for everyone thinking about triathlons. It offers good advice on choosing equipment, techniques and training programs.
Instead of relying on distance, its programs focus on time and percentage. Since biking encompasses usually 50% of the race, training should focus 50% on biking (unless you're very weak in one of the other legs).

It offers sample worksheets to set up your own program, based on the type of triathlon-sprint to Ironman.

    5 out of 5 stars it works.......2000-05-10

I'm a new transition to triathlons. This book works well for me because I'm prepared to accept the information the book has to offer. The information is objective and the training methods presented appear well organized with technical reasoning backing up the new concepts I learned here. I feel the author is genuinely concerned about the readers success and therefore disagree with other reviewers comments' that the there is too much (unnecessary) training. My thoughts on this matter are that Triathletes need a sufficient amount of training to efficiently compete and I think once again the author backs up the reasons why the training is important . My interpretation of the general training outline presented is that this will prepare one well for the stresses of half ironman competition, but one can adjust up or down from there to suit their racing needs. For a 1994 copyright, this book is well worth the money because the facts, figures, and methods being used appear to be genuine by even today's standards. If you wish to find something exactly for you please visit your local full service health club and pay several hundred dollars for a genuine taylored plan, this is a serious statement for those being extremely serious about this sport. But for the novice like me, this book tells me everything I need to know at this point. See you on the course friends...

2 out of 5 stars The gospel when it first hit press; outdated now.......1999-06-03

This was the first book I owned on the subject and could not believe the amount of training that the authors recommended one need do to finishi a triathlon. Given that the book is a bit old, I believe that these recommendations are a sign of those times. Nowadays, people know that one can do very well at the sport of triathlon on significantly less training, and I point the interested reader in the direction of books such as "Time-saving ..." and Sleamaker's "SERIOUS Training...". These books are equally scientific, but do not put as much emphasis on having to cover so many miles, but rather inform you on how to spend whatever time you actually have to train.

I would not recommend this book to a newcomer, nor to a seasoned triathlete anymore, but a few years ago I might have...

2 out of 5 stars Too technical for beginners.......1999-03-04

I am a previous distance runner (high school and college) who also enjoys mountain biking and recreational swimming. I have never competed in a triathalon before. For a beginner, this book focused too much on the technical aspects of training for professional triathletes.

Much of the book focused on complex training cycles and tracking methods. I had hoped to see recommended programs for beginners, such as base level resistance training to increase muscle tone and endurance, and base level cardiovascular workouts, followed by guidance for moving to the next level.

I also would have liked a listing of organizations in my area that organize triathalons.

For the most part, this book assumes the reader is already familiar with triathalons and training. I would recommend beginners look elsewhere.

The prodcut of several years of research, this is a comprehensive compilation of Hindu names in current use. The meaning of each of the 20,000 names in the volume is extensively discussed and information on sources and usage is also provided. The book is cross-referenced to make it easier to use.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, if you're willing to work at it.......2007-01-16

Many of the critiques about this book are unfair given that it is a scholarly work, not really a baby name book. However, many, like myself, will buy it for the latter purpose. You cannot find a more complete book of Hindu names anywhere else, including the Internet. Additionally, there are pronunciations included which are very helpful to someone not living in India. As long as you are willing to work to find a good name, this book is an excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars Usefull but time consuming.......2006-07-12

Well, I guess I would agree to most of the reviews so far that this book is not listed by gender, a lot of names are those you wouldprobably never name your baby and so on. BUT the important thing is it this book is unique and if you take the time and effort to find a name that you like then it is worth the effort. Afterall you are interested in all but ONE name for the baby.
PS: This book wont help if you are looking to name twins!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great collection of names; but poor book for baby names.......2004-05-20

This is a great piece of scholarly work -- a vast compilation of Hindu names. But if you're looking for a source of unique baby names, this book will frustrate you a lot.

Other reviewers have already highlighted the user un-friendliness of the book ... small font, mixing of gender, confusing Sanskrit classical spelling -- with all of which I agree. So I'll elaborate on the names themselves.

After going through more than 20,000 names in this book, I doubt if you will 'yield' more than 50 names of either gender that would serve as unique names for your baby. The book gives no consideration to whether the name is for a human, whether it is acceptable, and whether it is pronounceable. For example, who in the right mind would name their son Sadaparibhuta (always in fear), or their daughter Dakini (a witch)?! And would you really want a long name like Mahasahasrapramardini?! The book is filled with such mythological names, so the acceptable ones are needles in the haystack.

However, to be fair to Maneka Gandhi, she has never touted this as a source of names for your baby. Her introduction does make it clear that she just intended this to be a work of scholarship. It is the readers who are construing this to be a book of baby names.

Moreover, I doubt if there is a more complete compilation of Hindu names around, than this one. If you have the patience (and you'll need lots of it, especially if you don't know your baby's gender!) this is a good book to go through. We did, and found a nice unique name for our little one.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-02-04

We wanted a short, lyrical sanskrit name for our baby - which also should mean something special.
I was not happy with my first purchase of a dictionary of sanskrit names by Integral Yoga publications. I bought this book and was surprised to find that it contains all that and more.
I have seen reviews which say that names for boys and girls are together in this book which is an incovenience. The reason is that the root for the names is the same. It does not make sense to seggregate them.
I am saving this book for our next baby. Hope the review helps. Good luck!

              4 out of 5 stars worth it!.......2003-11-03

I was surprised to see the bad reviews for this book. This book is a collection of names in alphabetical order. Unfortunately it is not seperated gender-wise. I bought this book when I was expecting my second son. I wanted a name which went well with my first son's and I must say the book served its purpose. There are a lot of names from the epics, but you can ignore them (if you are not interested). It is just a vast collection of names.

Please note that it takes a few days and a lot of patience to go through those 20,000 names.

Including modern names and those which are popular, this book serves as a practical guide for choosing the perfect name for your son. It is also a precise and invaluable sourcebook for scholars and lay readers alike who would like to know what familiar (and not so familiar) Hindu names actually mean.

I would say I found this book useless. It is just a compilation of nouns not names. I think every Sanskrit word that is noun has been put up in the book. If you are looking for a name for your new born then it is not a good source(better look into some online babyname sites). Beacuse most of the words you find in the book, you will not want to use for name for your child(like Andha meaning blind). The book is good if you are looking for meaning for some name.

I have seen Menka Gandhi's book Full version The Penguin Book of Hindu Names. I thought I would save few books when I ordered The Penguin Book of Hindu Names for girls. Many names are missing even within girl names which were found in Full version.
I suggest to buy full version not this Girl Names or boy names seperately. Full version book is good one it has all the names you know and many more new.

                      Book Description

This book is a collection of specially-commissioned art-historical essays on the theme of manuscript studies by some of the world?s leading art historians and curators of manuscripts. It is expected to be even more successful and well-received than the comparable volume from University of Exeter Press, 'The Art of the Book: Its Place in Medieval Worship', edited by Margaret M. Manion and Bernard J. Muir.

The contributors are writing on their particular area of manuscript study, with the 'Wharncliffe Hours' and the 'Book of Kells' among the important manuscripts discussed. Their essays are written in honor of Margaret M. Manion, Professor Emeritus, Department of Fine Arts, University of Melbourne. Margaret Manion has an international reputation for her work in the field of art history. Her many publications include a facsimile edition of 'The Wharncliffe Hours' (Thames & Hudson) and 'Medieval and Renaissance Illuminated Manuscripts in Australian Collections' (with Vera F. Vines, Thames & Hudson).

'The University of Exeter Press is to be congratulated on having published such a well-produced book. Not the least of its delights are the excellent eight colour and ninety-eight black-and-white plates, which put the poorly-printed and over-priced offerings of older university presses to shame.' - The Ricardian, on 'The Art of the Book: Its Place in Medieval Worship'
