An almost overwhelming amount of information.......2006-05-01
If you are one of those people that want to be able to find answers to questions on your own, no matter how technical, this is a good book for you.
First, this review is being written from the perspective of a pet owner, NOT a veterinarian. I do have 20 years experience interacting with human clinicians (doctor, pharmacists, nurses, etc.) so I am familiar with more medical jargon than most people. However, I believe that a motivated student could gain a lot of knowledge from this book. I have used it much more than I anticipated since I got it.
The book covers the following animals:
Dogs
Cates
Small Mammals (Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents)
Reptiles
Birds
However, the majority of the focus of the book is on dogs and cats.
There is an entire chapter dedicated to homemade pet food and all the considerations that are required if you are going to undertake such an endeavor. There is far more to it than I realized to make certain that your animal is getting all the nutrients that they require for good health.
The book covers a lot of simple information like how many calories to feed an animal varied by age and activity level.
There are entire chapters dedicated to Nutritional Management of Animals that are experiencing health problems, these are:
Hospitalized patients
Obesity
Adverse Reactions to Food
Skin and Hair Disorders
Dental Disease
Orthopedic Disease in Dogs
Cardiovascular Disease
Renal Disease
Canine Urolithiasis
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease
Gastrointestinal and Exocrine Pancreatic Disease
Hepatobiliary Disease
Endocrine and Lipid Disorders
Cancers
Fatty Acids in Inflammatory Disease
Dietary Effects on Drug Metabolism
If you have a question about nutrition for your dog or cat, the answer is undoubtedly in this book somewhere. If you aren't familiar with medical terminology and don't want to be, this might not be the best book for you. However, if you are a motivated student, you can gain a lot from this book even without a current knowledge of medical terminology. I highly recommend this book to animal lovers that want to make the best nutritional choices for the furry members of their family.
Very technical but very useful........2002-04-07
The 4th edition of Small Animal Clinical Nutrition is significantly different from the first 3 editions -- expanded, more information, different editors, different organization, etc.
Much of this volume is more technical than the average reader wants or needs. It is a textbook used in veterinary schools. But a dedicated reader could gain much from it. Even the average reader could benefit from the chapters on commerical pet foods and on home prepared diets.
Contributions.......2000-05-20
Is good to see this book is not just written by nutriologist, there is an important contribution of clinicians dedicated to specific areas.

Customer Reviews:
Better books Available.......2007-10-10
I was disappointed in this book. It uses very few ingredients, and just offers a number of variations on those ingredients. Also there is no explanation of why each ingredient has been chosen, which makes it difficult to substitute when necessary. I have a number of other pet-food books, and most of them are more useful.
Pet's health already improved!.......2007-09-10
After following the easy recipes in Dr. Strombeck's book for a month our 4 year old Cocker Spaniel's health has improved significantly! She has the energy of a puppy, her eyes are bright, she sleeps less, and she has fewer bathroom needs. Dr. Strombeck has written an easy to read book and includes his research and rationale for the ideas he proposes. He also includes recipes for pet health problems. The recipes take only a few minutes to prepare and the ingredients are easy to find. NOW Foods, Bone Meal Powder - 16 oz. Using beef or chicken broth to cook the rice or carbs in adds a lot of flavor. Our dog loves the food (even the tofu!) and cleans her bowl every meal. And I feel confident that she's getting all of the nutrition she needs. I highly recommend this book.
A HUGE difference within 1 week!.......2007-08-14
I was preparing a stew for my dogs in lieu of wet food, but still serving them commercial, organic kibble, which they would barely eat. I asked my vet about feeding them 100% home cooked meals and he recommended this book. It is an expensive book and I sort of felt like I need a refresher course in biology, chemistry and math, BUT after reading it a couple times in a quiet, distraction free room, and making notes as I read, I got it. The only complaint I had is the dog weights go in 10lb. increments and a 20lb dog does not get twice what a 10lb dog does, so figuring out a portion for my 12lb dog was kind of an educated guess, BUT I am amazed to report an HUGE difference in their coats in just one week. My 12lb. Boston Terrier has soft hair like when she was a puppy again and our 60lb. lab mix has shown a great improvement with her allergies. It is a little bit of work, but it is easy to cook for a week at a time and just add the oils & supplements daily. If you love your pet, can afford a slight increase in your weekly trip to the market and have the time to prepare the food, DON'T HESITATE.
Healthy Dose of Preventative Care.......2007-07-30
Lots of great recipes for cats and dogs, including special recipes for disease or allergies. Some ingredients are difficult to find, so search around. The book is written for a vet or someone in the industry, so it's not a simple petfood cookbook for your everyday animal lover. But it is pretty simple, really, just a collection of recipes.
If I were to remake this book, I'd:
- Organize the pages so there is only one recipe per page and no recipes were cut in half by a page change.
- Suggest where to find certain ingredients
- Give storage and serving information in the recipe, not the front of the book.
Probably the best guide available.......2007-05-31
Probably the best guide available for those who prefer to avoid commercial processed pet foods. Extremely detailed.

Customer Reviews:
Raw Food Diet.......2007-09-19
This book is designed for folks who are interested in feeding their dogs a natural diet. It seems to be a precusor to the Barf Diet Books. It is technical in it's approach but describes a recommended diet which takes about two sentences. For anyone who feeds this type of diet to their dogs this book gives an excellent rationale for doing so. Although currently there is a "feud" going on between the author and those involved in BARF diets. In my opinion they are basically the same and only differ at the fringes.
Very interesting.......2007-08-29
Very interesting, however I do feed raw but I don't agree with feeding grains as Lonsdale does. But between him and Billinghurst if everyone would read their books they would never feed kibble again..
Too much about Tom Lonsdale.......2007-02-12
This book is really a lot more about the author than about raw feeding. It seems to centralize on the problems he faced getting his views accepted (raw feeding dogs) If you really want a basic book that is easier to understand and gets right to the point, then purchase his other book - Work Wonders. Has basically the same info, but without all the personal details.
The matyrdom of Tom Londsdale.......2006-08-29
I bought a few books on raw feeding and holistic diets and I have to say this is the worst. It's not even about raw meaty bones. This book is more about how the author feels martyred by both the Australian Vet Association and the pet food industry. I guess this might make an interesting story if thats the kind of thing you want to read about. I just found it a tiresome tirade.
Work Wonders, by the same author, is much more informative about raw feeding and can be downloaded for free at [...].
Good ideas, but boring........2005-12-26
I love the idea of a raw diet for dogs and I agree with his views on commercial petfood.
I just got really sick of reading about dental issues. It seems like 80% of this book is about dental hygeine.
The book should be named "Raw Meaty Bones promote Dental Hygeine", not "Health".
I also feel he should've given more in-depth information on what to feed/ how to feed.
He is also a proponent of feeding wings and backs alone- that is just TOO MUCH BONE.
If you look at a whole prey animal, the percentage of bone in it will be 8%-12%. Chicken wings/ backs alone are 50% bone. They are not a biologically appropriate way of feeding!
He does deserve credit for stating that whole prey is best, though.
Lonsdale has great ideas, but he should've published a separate book about canine dental health, or not gone off about it so much, and his specific diet recommendations are lacking/ somewhat misleading.

Excellent refference book.......2005-10-16
I found this book to be filled with information on the nutritional needs of both cats and dogs. As A pet owner I always read the pet food lables. Till I read this book I was unaware of how misleading those lables can be. I have come away from this book with a much better understanding of the nutritional needs of my pets and how to feed them to promote health and longevity. I also have gained some insight into how to spot signs of nutritional deficiencies in my pets. Surpisingly two of the writers of this book appear to work for Iams, a rather large and well known pet food company. This book was far from biased for the pet food industry nor did it appear to promote any pet food. This book has changed my view of the pet food industry and I will be be much more cautious in the future. I am revamping my pets' diets today! I feel this book is a must for anyone who owns a cat or a dog.
Written by the pet food industry.......2005-08-18
This book was profoundly disappointing. I expected information on feeding my animals food "fit for human consumption" and from my kitchen (versus store bought). I realized shortly into the book that it was written by experts at Iams Company, a maker of pet food. Their recommendations are based on meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines - a committee developed by the pet food industry when they decided they did not care for the requirements recommended by the Committee of Animal Nutrition of the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Science.
I did get one good tip from the book on how to clean my kitchen after working with raw meat. Otherwise, there are much better books out there for people looking for healthier pets through the food system.

Customer Reviews:
great on health & first aid, but lacking on nutrition.......2007-08-26
first the bad: the nutrition aspect of this book a *really* lacking. while the author initially states that meat should be the base of any dogs meal, absolutely NONE of the recipes she includes have more than 30% meat (give or take). there is no mention of how to discern a good dry or canned food (if you want that try Dr. Pitcairn's books), and while I can understand her hesitation about raw diets, she completely fails to point out that common sense and basic hygeine can take care of a lot of those problems. in short, the nutrition sections were useless.
the good: the health and first aid sections are top rate and those make this book a must have for ANY dog owner. Luckily the bulk of the book covers these issues (the nutrition section is very small), and that makes this book a worth while purchase. one of the most useful things is a list of things that is included is a list of what to have in a pet first aid kit.
overall I'm only giving the book 3/5 stars because I feel that a book titled "health and nutrition" should thoroughly cover nutrition and this book just doesn't cut it. I highly recommend buying it used (which I did) and keeping it around just for the "health" information.
A good layperson's guide........2006-11-05
I found this book to be very useful for the layperson. It's written in simple terms and the author has done a good job explaining the "basics" of dog health, including nutrition. It's hard to find a non-bias reference book on canine nutrition that's not endorsing a specific feeding "style".
Coming from an animal care background, I can easily recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about caring for their furry friend.
Dog Health & Nutrition for Dummies .......2006-08-31
Overall a good book, although sometimes it is overly basic and at others lacks detail it does have a particularly good first aid section. It is well laid out, clear, and easy to read. Well worth the investment to have on hand as a reference. Definitely a good buy for the first time dog owner!
A must for dog owners.......2005-02-24
I reserached a while into various bokos on dog nurtriotn and health. the options I found were limitintg: one can purchase books for alrge sums on money giving me all kinds on information about rare diseases and symptoms or the opposite, very light and uncritical. this book is in the middle. It highlights the most important facts for both nutrition and health and whilst it does not go into too much detail, I feel that I would not be able to cope with that anyway and would need to refer to a veterinarian anyway. And this is from a "human" doctor, turned dog owner, where I would feel the same about a book on human health, too many details are too confusing and worrying for the reader.
A++.......2004-02-03
This book, is an very informative read. I love it. It gives in depth details on how to care for your dog. If i were you I would order it !!

Small Animal Clinical Nutrition

Book Description

Nothing else like it!.......2001-07-09
I've been waiting anxiously for a book on herbs and nutritional supplements that has some science behind it. It seems like most of authors just quote each other. This one actually looks at the evidence for these supplements, and in doing so, blazes new territory in alternative veterinary medicine. I think it's a highly useful reference for veterinarians and dog owners alike!
Guide to Herbs & Nutraceuticals for Veterinary Professionals.......2000-08-31
This thin volume is intended as an introduction to herbs and nutraceuticals for veterinary professionals who are interested in incorporating some alternative treatment methods into their small animal practice. Dr. Wynn begins with the basic philosophy of holistic medicine and explains how to do a holistic evaluation. She then provides basic sample treatment protocols using herbs and nutraceuticals for a variety of ailments. She tends to err on the conservative side, not recommending, for instance, alternative treatments for heartworm disease although alternative heartworm treatments are available and often effective.
The most interesting parts of the book are the two materia medicas: one for nutraceutical supplements and one for herbs. While not very comprehensive, it's nice to have fully referenced material available in an area where there are many unsubstantiated claims. Each entry in the materia medica describes the supplement's actions, use, contraindications, potential adverse effects, and dosage.
All in all, a nonessential but nice addition to the library of the holistic animal health professional or the veterinary practitioner seeking to incorporate some alternative treatment methods.
