A Remarkable Treatise on a Fascinating Subject.......2000-08-20

I know, I know. People would rather read about movie stars and other famous people. I know this one's not on Oprah's reading list. Initially I was captivated by the cover of the book, but even though I didn't know much about Pinnipeds at the beginning, I found it a highly pleasurable and informative experience to scoot myself right through this book.

I'd like to step past the obvious positive features of Riedman's lovingly created product - lucid, readable, interesting, well constructed - and focus on something a little more subtle. Riedman steps outside the main topic of the book frequently, with illustrative and textual hyperbolations into animal and plant life closely associated or analogous to the Pinnipeds, presumably in an effort to provide a more three-dimensional view of her subject matter. But there's more to it than that. The picture of the dead Great White Shark at Ano Nuevo - winter home to the Northern Elephant Seal - brought home to me the almost innocent wonder with which Riedman views her subject matter. I imagined Riedman pouring over thousands of photographs, and on finding this one, saying "Boy! I've got to put that one in!" I have to admit that, by the time I got to this picture, I was thoroughly hooked as well. And thinking about it further, I could see that the world these fascinating creatures inhabit is truly a different and marvelous place.

To think that before I read this book, I couldn't tell a Seal from a Sea Lion - both dark, blobby bodies floating around in the surf or sunning themselves on a tidal rock. And after reading "The Pinnipeds", I find that this image has expanded so very much more that I feel I can almost picture what the world must be like through the eyes of that Seal Lion on the cover. Now, to have written the book that got me there... Well all I can say is that Marianne Riedman is one lucky person to have been given the opportunity to write this book, highly competent to have take the challenge so well, and above all so very much aware and so keenly fascinated by her subject matter. Well done!

I also want to say a brief word about the talented artists that provided illustrations for this book. Pieter Folkens is a highly skilled technical illustrator, with a love for marine life, and an eye for the detail. He can truly bring his creations to life. I'm less familiar with Irene Campagna, but her efforts in "The Pinnipeds" are also excellent. Both deserve mention here.

The Essential Text on Seals.......2000-06-02

Comprehensive. Well written. Informative. Accessible. ... I can't think of enough positive things to say about this book. Riedman manages to give readers a thorough overview of the biology and habits of sea lions, seals and walruses. The book is encyclopedic in its scope, but you do not have to be a biologist or naturalist to appreciate the details it covers. And then there are the pictures: maps, photos, line drawings and other illustrations help bring to life the various pinnipeds Riedman discusses.

This book will capture the attention of older elementary school students. I would recommend this for grades 3-5. Well-written text complimented with interesting photos.

There are alot of good tips in this book, however it is poorly organized. I felt like I was reading a church cookbook, where everyone submitted something and everything was included, even if the same thing had already been said 10 times. It is very frustrating to read.

Not bad, but not as helpful as I thought it would be........2004-07-07

After I started reading the book, I immediately found it difficult to follow. It was not well organized, as topics jumped around dramatically becoming a bit annoying. It seemed as if the author just had everyone on their email distribution list send in tips, and then they pasted them all together without little thought and hurriedly put out the book. Also, what cracked me up was the drawing of a teddy bear next to a lamp. (Any live-aboard, or boater for that matter, would know not to have any combustible materials next to a heat source!) A lot of the tips were sophomoric and not very helpful to experienced boat live-aboarders. Not a horrible book, but definitely not as good or as helpful as I had hoped it would be.

Required reading for the male cruiser........2004-06-16

A great little "Throne Book.".......2004-07-14

I picked this up as one of a set of three.The others are "Quotable Quotes" and "Life in these United States."; packaged as "Quips,Quotes,and Quizzes".
This book is a set of 50 lists of words to test your knowledge.This has been a long time feature of Reader's Digest.As an Engineer,who considers his "word knowledge" rather minimal,this book was very enjoyable.Each list has 20 words with 4 meanings to choose from.My scores ranged from 12 to 17,and rated as excellent. These little tests made me feel pretty good,but I would hardly consider my skills in word power as excellent.One thing that surprised me was that many common word's meanings are misunderstood.To add a little spice most lists have one or two words I've never heard of. That's twice,who says you can't end a sentence with a preposition?
For a taste of what's in this little book...

A convenient way to expand vocabulary.......2004-01-25

I am an English teacher and have used this book for many years as a supplement to improve students' knowledge of advanced words.
It is convenient and useful, but students do get a bit bored by the repetitive exercises. There are many other good vocabulary books on the market, but I would recommend especially the Barron's books, notably 1,100 Words You Need to Know and Simon's Saga for the SAT I Verbal -- a "novel" approach that is rather advanced but is very entertaining and really works.

Fun for word lovers.......2002-06-14

I bought this book to help study for one of the categories in a local spelling bee (the category was words from Reader's Digest's "It Pays to Enrich your WordPower"). I love word and always enjoy reading this section of the Reader's Digest so having years and years worth of these lists is fun!

this is a nice book well worth the cash outlay. One can easily lay it down and pick it up, thumbing through it and doing the quizes etc. An entertaining and affordable read for word lovers.

A Great Collector's Resource.......2007-05-06

Unlike the first reviewer, I bought this book for what it is, a resource for understanding Keystone World War One stereoviews. If you're looking for a picture book of WWI, I agree, this ain't it. The late Tex Treadwell compiled a list of over 1000 WWI stereoviews issued by Keystone View Company. No boxed set ever exceeded 400 views. The author of this book has managed to figure out which ones went with which boxed set, the year that they got included & when various views got deleted. In many instances the origin (source) of the view has been figured out. Personally, I am impressed with the author's efforts and like the book. If you collect World War One stereoviews this book is a must.

Not a Collection of Stereo Views.......2007-04-04

This is a collector's guide to Keystone stereo views of World War I--namely lists and information on the views available. If you actively collect this genre, this is a great guide. But if you're looking for a book of photographs (stereo or mono) of the Great War--forget it, you'll be (like me) very disappointed.

Mmmmmm- a lovely book!! Lovely, big, lush, perfect for one Mother of a Coffee Table.......2007-04-05

This is one of my books for flicking through just to inspire a little bit and kick my creativity along if I'm getting a little blocked. It's well over 200 quality pages of full page (and double page) good images, mostly monochrome, divided into classifications of female, male and couples.

There are books and photographers who inspire me more than much of this book but it is a nice package. Composition is good, lots of creative perspectives (a broad range of photographers is always a good start) and the Editors have obviously been looking for quality images and many slightly abstract ways of viewing the human form, the subject you could still be intrigued by if you had three lifetimes to photograph and honour with the recorded image. At times this book can feel a little dated as styles and photography fashions have changed but quality never goes out of style and masterpieces are timeless though there's probably only a few images here that would rate as masterpieces, (who am I to say what's a masterpiece?!) but certainly there's style and quality spilling from almost every page.

The only thing that might disappoint people is that one of the very best images is on the cover so expectations could become so high the rest of the book can't stack up. Still, If I was setting a book up would I want the cover to be the one picture I wasn't sure about including in it? I doubt it!! This is a fantastic book.

Both Male and Female Nudes, Equally Exquisite.......2000-12-12

I don't know if the general public knows how hard it is to find art photography books that show male and female nudes in equal numbers. This book shows both and they are gorgeous to boot. I'm having a hard time telling you a difference between this book and the other nude book I've recently given 5 stars to, "Eros." Both show men and women. Both have artistically perfect work done by top notch artist photographers. Perhaps the difference is more of a cultural one. This book is from chiefly German or German-based photographers and galleries. Thus, its perspective seems more European than it does American. "Eros," however, looks fully like an American book. If you are an American already, nothing will seem really odd or different to you in "Eros." However, unless you are steeped in foreign films, and I am, this "Nudes Index I" book might strike you as more "out there" or avant garde. I had to own both books. How do they compare to Robert Mapplethorpe's own nude books? I've also given 5 stars to Mapplethorpe's book in a much earlier review. Mapplethorpe's work, however, will offend quite a few people. I think, by contrast, only the most prudish of people would be offended by "Nudes Index I" or "Eros." OTOH, you say you want the one done by the really first rate major artist? Well, you're right back to the Mapplethorpe book then. Truth be told, I bought all three so don't look to me as to which book should be eliminated! One fact mystifies me. I spent the same price at Half Price Books on "Nudes Index I" that Amazon is selling it for new. Mine was supposed to be used but it looks new. Knowing you for sure are getting it new at $39.99 here is quite a deal for this art book filled with photos on each and every page. Both "Nudes Index I" and "Eros" would make good gifts as well to your artistic or intellectual friends. I don't know if I'd buy anyone but myself the Mapplethorpe book as a gift. So I did.
