Book Description

Birds that walk underwater. Slugs that mate while suspended in midair. Frogs who star on Hollywood soundtracks. The Pacific Northwest abounds in natural wonders, and here are field guides as interesting as the world they describe. Filled with both amazing and amusing true-life tales about Northwest plants and animals, this new series of uncommon field guides will appeal to the casual observer and the avid naturalist alike. Each of these illustrated books describes more than sixty plants, animals, and natural phenomena of a particular Northwest habitat. Author Patricia Lichen combines standard field guide information about habitat, appearance, and range with delightful and engaging descriptions of the little-known facts, surprising details, and amusing-- even bizarre-- tidbits rarely found in ordinary field guides. Discover how amazing the Northwest natural world really is with these uncommon field guides.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommonly delightful.......2006-08-13

All 3 of Lichen's "Uncommon Field Guide" series are uncommonly delightful to poke into. One can read them chapter-by-chapter or just open the book anywhere and delve in. Even if it is an animal or plant you are familiar with, there is a good likelihood that you will discover something new about it in her description. Reading the books is somewhat like the joy of discovering an animal or plant for the first time or in an unexpected place. My only complaint is that there is not one of Feltner's detailed illustrations with every single chapter.

5 out of 5 stars River-Walking Songbirds and Singing Coyotes.......2001-08-02

Pat Lichen weaves fascinating scientific information with humor, personal experience, and heartfelt tenderness for the natural world. Linda Feltner's drawings gently accentuate the essays. I'd recommend all three of Lichen's books: River-Walking Songbirds and Singing coyotes, Brittle Stars and Mudbugs, and Passionate Slugs and Hollywood Frogs as good reading and good reference for any household in the Pacific Northwest.

5 out of 5 stars Charming & informative.......2001-08-02

Made me want to go straight out for a hike in the mountains! Now I know a lot more about the plants and animals out there!

5 out of 5 stars Fun book!.......2001-07-29

This book was great fun to read! I especially liked the author's sense of humor and obvious connection to the natural world. Interesting details about how different plant and animal species live their lives.

Book Description

Anyone dreaming about owning an affordable sailboat will be attracted by this book, which provides small boat sailors and first-time boat buyers with a good introduction to trailer-sailing. The author shows how cruising on a small but properly equipped boat that can be kept at home and towed to the water behind the family car is a satisfying and not very costly exercise. The book has been updated and expanded to include several new models and a new chapter on safe and smart trailering and ramp launching. Jerry Cardwell was an enthusiastic sailor for over 20 years, always in sailboats under 30 feet. Dieter Loibner is a well-known yachting journalist, a small boat sailor and author.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information!.......2007-10-11

When I ordered this I was expecting something completely different, on its arrival I put it on the night stand where eventually I picked it up again. Since then I have read through this now countless times looking at details that I missed the first time through! Well written for the novice to intermediate sailor looking for their first or second sailboat.

I would highly recommend this to anyone in the market for their first or second boat, excellent information..

5 out of 5 stars A first-rate primer.......2007-08-06

Now in a new third edition revised and updated by yachting journalist Dieter Loibner, Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat is 20-year sailing veteran Jerry Cardwell's guide to owning and enjoying cruises on an affordable small sailboat according to the basic principle, "You can sail big on a small sailboat far more easily and for much less money than you can sail small on a big sailboat." Chapters offer a basic primer of all aspects of a modest sailboat; how to deal with sailing dangers from physical injury to heavy weather to crew overboard to broken rigging or rudder; what absolute necessities to bring such as distress signals, emergency lights, a global positioning system, and sail repair/rigging tape; how to properly assess the quality of a used boat before spending one's hard-earned money; and much more. Written in a straightforward tone for readers of all backgrounds, Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat is a first-rate primer for anyone interested in tasting the thrill of the waves on a modest budget.

4 out of 5 stars The Case for the Trailerable Sailboat .......2006-01-07

I have a copy of the second edition published in 1997. This is book for people who are considering buying a trailerable boat in the 22' to 26' range that has some overnight sleeping accomodations. "Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat" builds the case for a trailerable sailboat and reviews the features of four popular trailerable sailboats. I think the author has done a excellent job in his narrow focus. Some of the specs of the four boats he uses as examples have changed in recent years and could use a bit of updating.

I have a concern in that Cardwell only has four pages (pages 115 to 118) on the subject of "Heavy Weather." On Lake Erie where I sail, we get squalls and other sudden storms with rapidly building wind and waves. There would be value in a book that explicitly gives more information on what happens on these types of boats when the wind rises to over 16 knots and waves start running over 3 feet, in other words Force 5 conditions.

I have friends who sail and cruise on Lake Erie. They are McGregor 26X owners. Caldwell gave high marks to the McGregor. My friends get very nervous when the wind goes over 16 knots and head for the nearest harbour. They have owned the boat for 3 years. They are in the process of upgrading to a larger and non-trailerable fixed keel sloop. They are tired of running for the nearest port when a squall blows through or the wind picks up. I generally agree with what Cardwell wrote, however I think he underplayed the challenges of being able to handle these types of boats in Force 5 conditions. I read the book and seriously considered a trailor sailor, but I bought a used Catalina 30. I do not regret my choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK FOR TRAILERABLE SAILBOATS.......2005-12-02

This book was my bible when I went looking for a trailerable sailboat. Hard to imagine making he journey without it, and I'm very pleased with the boat I bought. Essential for others considering this way to sail.

3 out of 5 stars A fair but narrow look at trailer sailors.......2003-11-01

A fair review, but narrow in scope - he certainly made friends at three sailboat manufacturers. They are all he mentions in the book. Otherwise, generally good stuff. Good winter reading, but don't choose reading this over actually going sailing.

Book Description

Most sailors dream of journeying to foreign ports, but many are held back by fears both real and imagined. However, as Reese Palley explains, sailing close to the shore is considerably more dangerous than voyaging across the sea. There Be No Dragons is intended to encourage those timid of the deep oceans and to inspire the confidence necessary to set sail across the wine dark seas of the world.By his own account a sailor of no great skill, Palley has nevertheless safely completed a fifteen-year circumnavigation. If he can do it, then even the lowliest amateur, equipped only with the simplest of information and a small but sturdy boat, can follow in his wake.Palley's essential and entertaining guide, now available for the first time in paperback, discusses easily learned skills and inexpensively acquired equipment, all of which are requisite for safe sailing."...funny, raucous, insightful, anarchistic, entertaining, instructional; seamanship with a difference." Great book, great advise, nice writing style and very easy to read. Really does address key issues that sailors will be considering before venturing further in their small boats. Read it and it will motivate you to "just do it!".

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2006-08-10

Since our long-range goal is to sail the Caribbean I thought this book would help us ready our boat for the adventure. I was not disappointed. Alternately funny & informative this is truly a must-read before you set sail for any long adventure. I have a strong feeling it will be well-worn before we head out.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but..........2006-07-28

Contains some useful advice on blue-water sailing. However, after seeing the author's photo on the back cover, I *really* could have done without his lengthy discourse on sexual relations at sea.

5 out of 5 stars For aspiring sailors seeking to launch.......2004-07-14

There Be No Dragons: How To Cross A Big Ocean In A Small Sailboat is the story of how Reese Palley (a self-admitted marginally skilled sailor) managed to safely complete a fifteen-year circumnavigation of the globe in a very small sailboat. Among other insightful bits of nautical wisdom, readers (and aspiring sailors seeking to launch out into their own nautical adventuring around the world) will learn that its actually safer to sail out into the ocean than to hug the coast lines; that even a rank amateur having only the sketches information can succeed if his small boat is sturdy, his confidence is strong, and he gives a careful reading to Reese Palley's There Be No Dragons with its combination of easily learned skills, identified necessary equipment, and advice for safe sailing.

    Book Description

An overview of the major grammatical categories and constructions in the world's languages, Introduction to Typologyprovides a thorough and comprehensive coverage of typology in the areas of morphology and syntax, while underscoring the similarities and differences that underlie the vast array of human languages. Pedagogically sound, this introductory text includes a glossary and highlights and defines each new term as it appears. Each chapter concludes with a summary of new terminology and concepts as well as a list of additional, related readings. Introduction to Typology assumes neither prior knowledge of typology nor extensive background in linguistics, making it useful as a primary or supplementary text for a variety of courses, particularly those dealing with grammatical structure and linguistic universals.

      Book Description

Since its first publication, Language Universals and Linguistic Typology has become established as the leading introductory account of one of the most productive areas of linguistics—the analysis, comparison, and classification of the common features and forms of the organization of languages. Adopting an approach to the subject pioneered by Greenberg and others, Bernard Comrie is particularly concerned with syntactico-semantic universals, devoting chapters to word order, case making, relative clauses, and causative constructions. His book is informed throughout by the conviction that an exemplary account of universal properties of human language cannot restrict itself to purely formal aspects, nor focus on analysis of a single language. Rather, it must also consider language use, relate formal properties to testable claims about cognition and cognitive development, and treat data from a wide range of languages. This second edition has been revised and updated to take full account of new research in universals and typology in the past decade, and more generally to consider how the approach advocated here relates to recent advances in generative grammatical theory.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent introduction and reference........2001-10-14

Along with Paynes "Describing Morphosyntax" (ISBN: 0521588057), this book will help any student -- or entertain any enthusiast --of languages or linguistics. It treats various types of syntactic theory in a manner that (rarely among such useful works) is clear, engaging and (in places) enthralling. While drawing on the familiar "old standards" for grammatic comparison (Russian, Dyirbal, Yakut, Hikxaryana, Japanese, etc), the way comparisons are drawn between systems reveals isomorphisms and patterns that are certainly elegant and perhaps beautiful. Comrie has, as ever, produced a thing of wonder.

          Book Description

Radical Construction Grammar presents a profound critique of syntactic theory and argumentation, and offers a genuinely new approach to syntax based on the fact of grammatical diversity. Recent syntactic theories are essentially formal models for the representation of grammatical knowledge and posit complex syntactic structures in the analysis of sentences. The result has been a endless cycle of new and revised theories of syntactic representation. Radical Construction Grammar argues that this approach to syntax is incompatible with the grammatical variation found within and across languages. This book defends three fundamental theses: (i) constructions are the primitive units of syntactic representation, and grammatical categories are defined by constructions, not the other way around; (ii) the only syntactic structures are the part-whole relations between a construction and the syntactic elements that make it up; (iii) not only are grammatical categories construction-specific, but constructions are language-specific. In other words, syntactic structure is almost entirely language-specific; attempts to find a universal formal model are doomed to failure. Radical Construction Grammar integrates concepts from typological theory and construction grammar to uncover the genuine universals of grammar. Constructions are represented as complex symbolic units pairing form and meaning. The semantic map model of typological theory is used to map category distributions on a largely universal conceptual space. Universals of grammar are found in the mapping of meaning onto form. Systematic patterns of grammatical variation provide evidence for the topography of conceptual space, which in turn reflects the geography of the human mind.

              Book Description

Copulas (in English, the verb to be) are conventionally defined functionally as a means of relating elements of clause structure, especially subject and complement, and considered to be semantically empty or meaningless. They have received relatively little attention from linguists. Dr Pustet in this extensive cross-linguistic study goes some way towards correcting this neglect. In doing so she takes issue with both accepted definition and description. She presents an analysis of grammatical descriptions of over 160 languages drawn from the language families of the world. She shows that some languages have a single copula, others several, and some none at all. In a series of statistical analyses she seeks to explain why by linking the distribution of copulas to variations in lexical categorization and syntactic structure. She concludes by advancing a comprehensive theory of copularization which she relates to language classification and to theories of language change, notably grammaticalization.

                5 out of 5 stars A classic work........2006-04-29

When Johnston died in 1944, much of what became this book was in scattered manuscript form and subsequently edited by Heather Child and Justin Howes and first printed in 1985. They brought the work together and provided illustrations -- from his class notes and lectures -- demonstrating Johnston's theories of writing. Included are tributes and appreciations, essays, lectures, writings, etc.

Of Johnson's writing, Evelyn Waugh said; "The sweep and precision of his strokes were as virile as a bullfighter's and left me speechless."

Well researched and illustrated, this is a classic work about one of the foremost and most influential teachers of calligraphy.
