"I saw a buffalo today." Our fascination with these magnificent creatures draws thousands every year to wilderness areas to view them in their natural setting. Portraits of the Bison stunningly documents bison society with numerous colour photographs, detailed anatomical illustrations, and engaging description. Wes Olson explores the history, social structure, and life cycle of these intriguing animals, with an emphasis on safety and awareness while observing them. This beautiful guide will captivate nature lovers and bison experts as it reveals the story of this wanderer of the plains.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Intro to Bison.......2007-02-01
This book is pricey for the so-so quality of the mostly grainy photos. The illustrations are excellent. This intro to Bison could be used as a field guide, which is the author's intention. It lacks in-depth detail about Bison and their lives, but does provide some information that I have not seen in other books on this subject; determining the age of a Bison from the skull is an example. If you want the basics on Bison, buy this one!
An informed and informative introduction to the history, social structure, and life cycle of bison .......2005-12-15
Portraits Of The Bison: An Illustrated Guide To Bison Society by Wes Olson (Senior Warden, Elk Island National Park, Alberta, Canada) is an informed and informative introduction to the history, social structure, and life cycle of bison enhanced with anatomical illustrations as well as the color photography by Johane Janelle. Readers will learn how to identify bison by age and gender, and the differences between the wood bison and plains bison species. A truly remarkable work, Portraits Of The Bison is an ideal and enthusiastically recommended addition to both school and community library North American wildlife reference collections -- and especially commended to the non- specialist general reader wanting to know more about the social structures and relationships of a bison herd.

Weight Training by Design -- for Structural Integrity .......2006-07-17
Few people make posture the top priority until they get an injury. I had fatigued my way into a shoulder impingement, not knowing how to position the shoulders, chest, back, abs and hips to avoid compromise and strain. Luckily I met Dale, had some sessions, bought the book. I do the "daily dozen" and about half of the exercises, which is plenty. My brain relates to the strict instructive photos. One reviewer wanted more details, but if you look closely the pictures give very definite examples. The workout is first rate if you do it right. Which builds recovery and success.
A "must" read for people on the go!.......2006-07-17
I found Weight Training By Design to be an extremely user-friendly manual for strength-training with both free weights and weight machines. Given my tight daily schedule, I used the sample workout plans to tailor a conditioning program to accomplish my specific goals, while employing the BAM superset system to work muscle groups in an efficient manner. Those seeking various levels of physical fitness (from beginners to seasoned athletes) will benefit from the sound principles contained in this book. And this book is a definite must for people on the go who want a comprehensive daily workout, but cannot spend hours in a gym.
exceptionally clear and useful method...gets one on the right track.......2006-07-11
I have tried working out with many trainers as I need the development of bone density and yet have joint problems, little cartilage, and low bone density, all necessitating great care. Without exception, every trainer before Dale hurt me. I have been working out with Dale's method, under his guidance, for over five years. I have never gotten injured and according to bone scans, my density has improved over these years. This book is a welcome addition to the body of weight training material available. It is clear and concise and allows one to develop strength and bone density (as well as sculpting the body...an added benefit!) without injury through a proven method. Now everyone can take advantage of Dale's expertise through the system he has developed and committed to writing in this book wherever they live, without fear of injury.
Clear, helpful, and practical.......2006-07-11
This is a book meant to be taken to the gym. It's clearly detailed, helpfully photographed, and explained in a way that novices and more advanced fitness enthusiasts can use it with great benefit. I haven't found a book of its kind that is so comprehensive and practical. The exercises, especially the Balanced Antagonistic Muscle approach, make for a safe, speedy, and fun workout. I recommend it unconditionally.
No revolution just uninspired rehashing.......2006-07-09
Liked the reviews I read here about this book. After purchasing and reading the book, the reviews are truley misleading. Content which is meager has little explanation for nearly any exercise suggested. BAM is better used by Emeril then in this book.
Fancy topics like "Posture and Ergonomics" once I read it, are nothing more then superficial observations. Telling me how to stand and sit are not training techniques.
The chapter on abs has 6 exercises with 2 being used twice one on a bench and one on the floor counting for 4 of the 6.
Sadly the reviews sucked for this book. If I had flipped thru the book for just a few seconds I would have passed without a moments hesitation, instead I wasted a few bucks and some time confirming how feeble the book was.

"Wilhelm really knows students and knows how to teach them to craft a professional story."-
The Oregonian
Part memoir, part writing manual,
Storyteller is an affectionate account of how the Clarion Writers' Workshop began, what Kate Wilhelm learned, and how she passed a love of the written word on to generations of writers. Includes writing exercises and advice. A Hugo and Locus award winner.
Customer Reviews:
Anecdote-filled ranting + a dash of ego.......2006-03-28
Judging by her attitude in this book, Kate Wilhelm must be a great writer. Too bad I've never even heard of her...
The thing that struck me about this paperweight of a book is that this woman says never to write anecdotes into a story... the only problem is, STORYTELLER IS AN ANECDOTE. Score one hypocrisy point. Also, I was dumbfounded by her DIVINE TRUTH of THE ONE TRUE WAY TO WRITE, such as not letting your characters be real people, and not to write about what you care about. How's this supposed to help anyone? Its nothing but whining, and man I can smell the ego spilling out from here! Stay away at all costs!
Disappointing and dull. 2.5 stars.......2006-02-21
_____________________________________________
Picked this up on a whim, and it was disappointing. I didn't finish it -- the book is repetitious and surprisingly dull, considering what a good writer Kate Wilhelm is. Though there are moments. Likely to be of more interest to Clarion alums and aspiring students. For others, caveat lector.
Sadly,
Peter D. Tillman
It wasn't bootcamp, it was war.......2005-12-17
I lived through one of the worst Clarions on record. Kate and Damon were a soothing end to a month of hell, but in the long run, Clarion was like life - there's no rhyme or reason to who comes out ahead or who comes out alive.
If you feel cheated that you didn't get your six weeks on an arid Midwestern campus, just stay home and write for six weeks. You'll get more done and it will cost a lot less.
A Dream Conceived in a Book.......2005-11-17
I've always wanted to go to a writer's workshop, especially Clarion. It's a workshop I had heard of when I first started writing, but one that was inaccessible to me because of both funds and locations. It's too far away, in other words.
But then Storyteller came out. Though at first I didn't know it was written about the Clarion workshop, I did know it was a book on the craft of writing. I was pleasantly delighted, however, when I found out that the writer, whom I had only known by name and not by what she actually writes, was a writer interested in fantasy and who was one of the original teachers at Clarion. Not only that, but her husband the late Damon Knight, one of the legends in sci-fi and fantasy, also taught here and is spoken of in a fond way by Kate Wilhelm in this book.
A lot can be learned in this book. While it's more of a biography of the early years of Clarion, it also has plenty of writing advice. Despite my reason for buying it (the advice on the craft), I enjoyed the sections that detailed some of the classes Wilhelm and Knight had taught, and some of the trials that the early Clarion workshop had gone through (like the fact that it had started in Clarion PA, which is very close to where I live). In fact, I liked these sections more than the advice sections (the ratio of biography to advice is about 50/50). It helped me live a small part of one of my dreams. For a moment, I was a student at Clarion, experiencing what past students had experienced. That may sound sentimental, and the memories relayed by Wilhelm in this book is told in a sentimental way, but that's how I feel. Kate Wilhelm was able to make me feel welcome into her world.
Now that's not saying that the writing advice found in these pages are to be ignored. While most of the advice is recycled and can be found in many other books, I think her word is a little more trustworthy, as she used the advice given here in teaching other young writers, a lot of which have gone ahead and made names for themselves. And the advice is given in a no nonsense kind of way. Wilhelm says what works and why, and tells you why something doesn't work and why to avoid using it. It's all told from plenty (years upon years) of experience.
This is an excellent book for any writer looking to go to college or a workshop for writing, and it's especially useful for anyone in the Michigan area who's considering going to Clarion, as it is the best workshop for genre writing. After that, I'd recommend this to writers who have already had some schooling but want some more solid advice. This is one of the best and most trustworthy books written in some time on the craft of writing.
Better Together, just as it's always been.......2005-10-23
There's only one other book that should be offered with this one via the "Better Together" section and that's Creating Short Fiction by Damon Knight. Storyteller is Kate's homage to the Clarion workshop; Creating Short Fiction was the book Damon wrote about all the things he hoped writers would learn by attending Clarion. Anyone who's interested in Clarion, or Kate and Damon, or learning to write or more importantly, learning to write and SELL speculative literature, will want both these books. Anyone who already has one or the other, will want both. Anyone who bought Creating Short Fiction when it first came out undoubtedly needs a second copy to lend or to re-read or to give as a gift this Christmas. Anyone who has ever known Kate and Damon already knows they were and remain a magic pair of workshop instructors. Let their two books on/about Clarion have the chance to work the same magic by offering them as a set.

A Fairly Thorough History of Animation.......2007-06-12
I purchased this book for a class, it was the textbook we used. It was interesting and seemed to encompass a fair amount of history. I do wish he'd expanded more on the history of computer animation, but it's pretty extensive in and of itself.
Textbook Excellence........2007-03-14
The book I ordered was in perfect condition and delivery right away. I got it about half the amount of business days I was supposed to get it. Plus the book isn't mind-numbing to read as it's about the coolest subject ever.
The history of cartoons (to the 1980s).......2006-05-26
When I think of the history of animation, I tend to divide things into three periods: The Golden Age, noted for early Warner Brothers cartoons and the classic Disney movies such as Snow White and Fantasia; The Age of Mediocrity, where creativity seemed to reach its nadir, as seen most notably in the bland Hanna Barbera cartoons; and the Modern Era, with the resurgence in cartoon creativity, which, starting with The Little Mermaid in the movies and the Simpsons on TV, animation reached a new level of popularity and respectability. Leonard Maltin's book, Of Mice and Magic, shows that my own view of cartoon history is roughly correct but also overly simple: there was plenty of mediocrity in the Golden Age and plenty of decent stuff in the Age of Mediocrity.
Maltin starts off with a chapter about the silent era, when animation was just beginning. Over time, experience would refine the process, but the big leap would occur with sound, in particular with Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie featuring Mickey Mouse. After the silent era chapter, there are chapters that serve as "biographies" of the major animation studios, starting with the biggest of them all, Disney.
The Disney characters are among the most popular in cartoon history (or film history in general). Mickey Mouse may have been the biggest name, but he didn't have much of a personality, so he started being pushed aside in favor of more developed characters, especially Donald Duck, the first major Disney character with any sort of edge. In fact, this is a constant theme in the book: that the weakest cartoons from any studio were the ones that featured characters with no distinct personalities.
Success would often come with the most offbeat and edgy characters, such as Donald Duck, Bugs Bunny, Popeye and Daffy Duck. But some of the studios had a mercenary nature that would put quantity ahead of quality; probably the worst in the bunch was Terrytoons where good cartoons were the exception, not the rule. Although even Terrytoons would have some memorable characters - in particular, Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle - even many of the cartoons featuring them were not very good (which is why in the world of cartoons, the Terrytoons characters will never outshine even some of the Disney or Warner Brothers second-stringers).
Space limitations prevent me from going as in depth on this subject as I would like, but suffice it to say that after reading this book, I still do feel justified in defining an Age of Mediocrity. It was not that every cartoon in that period was bad, but the good ones were few and far between and classics were very rare indeed. The Age of Mediocrity was filled with bland cartoons that were more cute than funny, often repeated the same gags over and over again, and had few remarkable characters.
What about what I call the Modern Age? It would have started right after this edition of the book was published (1987), so it is understandably, but sadly omitted. Also missing is any real look at TV cartoons, so Bullwinkle, Underdog, Yogi Bear and the Super Friends, among others, are only mentioned in passing. Maltin admits up front that this book won't cover these TV cartoons, nor non-American products, hence the omission of international fare such as the Italian Fantasia-like movie, Allegro non troppo.
The strengths of this book, however, far outweigh the shortcomings. While my opinions sometimes differ from Maltin's on the quality of various cartoons, these are a matter of individual taste (overall, he tends to go easier on the films than I do; for example, he has a more favorable opinion on the UPA cartoons than I do); besides, this book is more of a history of cartoons than a critique of them. In addition to good writing, we gets lots of pictures (only a few in color) and an extensive filmography for all the chronicled cartoon studios.
You probably need to be a certain age (probably at least 30) to fully appreciate this book, as younger readers may not have really grown up with these cartoons and may not have even seen them as adults (and since many of these cartoons were geared only to kids, they would not even have much appeal to those over 10). But if you remember these cartoons and look back at them with fond nostalgia, this is a great book.
SHOULD BE ENTITLED "HISTORY OF US THEATRICAL ANIMATION".......2005-04-08
I found this book to be an excellent reference source for cartoons produced to be shown in theaters. However, entitling it "A History of American Animated Cartoons" is not exactly truth in advertising. I think most people (except for perhaps some obsessive purists) would agree that the cartoons produced for television from the 40/50's onward would also be considered American Animated Cartoons. But none of these great cartoons (i.e., Gumby, Beany and Cecil, Clutch Cargo, Hanna-Barbara's Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, Pixie & Dixie, and others through the present) are included here in any detail. Also missing from the appendices of studio output are the more obscure products like Warner's Private Snafu and other animation produced for corporate clients. Mr Maltin would do cartoon lovers well by commissioning a second volume to complete the story.
Excellent and informative!!.......2004-01-04
Leonard Maltin has a real knowledge of animation and his passion and enthusiasm for cartoons is apparent. The book traces animation from its beginnings at the turn of the century up to modern day. Extensive coverage is provided to all the major cartoon studios and many of the key directors. The illustrations are excellent. Maltin provides a fair amount of detail but not too much to overwhelm the casual fan. Anyone interested in the history of animation or just wants information on which films to see is well advised to pick up this very well written book.
