Book Description
That night Cindy took the tiny cubs home with her. She didn't sleep at all-she was too busy feeding milk to the twins, cleaning them, and checking on every little cry. When dawn came, the small bears were still clinging to life.Children learn about fractions while following the Denver Zoo's baby polar bears, Klondike and Snow Early one morning at the Denver Zoo, a polar bear gives birth to two tiny babies, then abandons them. The zoo staff must raise the babies, but there are many things they don't know. What foods are best? How much should the cubs eat? Once they figure out the answers, the cubs quickly become healthy, happy young bears. Young readers follow Klondike and Snow as they grow from fragile newborns to large, lively bears, and along the way they'll learn about fractions.

A GREAT WAY TO GET CHILDREN'S INTEREST.......2006-11-26
I just love this book! As a reading teacher, I am constantly looking for books to read to and with my students in grades three, four, and five. My third grade students absolutely love bears and can't read enough about them. I am going to read and discuss this book with them regarding the subject of bears, connecting it to what they already know. Then I will work with their classroom teachers on fractions using the charts in the book. I purchased every book in the series and can't wait to use them.
The trick is to find out what interests the children and then adapt all lessons to the theme. I use animals to teach about the continents, map skills, reading, writing, science, and math. I am going to use the Tiger book next and read Mother to Tigers aloud to them. I also have the students read the Magic Tree House Books that match the animals of the various continents. Douglas Florian's poetry books about animals also bring a fun element to the lessons.
My struggling readers often turn out to be the best readers in their class!
Have not had a chance yet to see how my grandson actually does with it.......2006-03-15
I had purchased the photo children's book of Klondike and Snow from the Denver Zoo for my grandson 3or 4 years ago, after I was told he showed an interest in polar bears and I had bought him a stuffed polar bear(from Amazon.com I think). Jake is now 6 and still has 'Polee', the(15"?)stuffed polar bear, who has spent many a night in Jake's bed. I was a math major and computer programmer and so have always loved math. I think this book may be too advanced for him at this time, but I feel when he is ready, this has to be the BEST possible presenter of this info to Jake. I was very impressed with the sample pages I saw from the book. I'm going up to Seattle this weekend to see him and hope to check out how he likes it.. and get back to you!
Fantastic New Teaching Tool.......2004-10-20
One early morning, a polar bear gives birth to two little polar bear cubs at the Denver Zoo. The two babies, later named Klondike and Snow, are both cold and weak, and poor little Klondike has a cut on his head. The Mother soon abandons both babies, leaving the zoo staff to raise the cubs on their own. However, it is not as easy as it looks, for the staff are confused about many things, such as what foods will give them the nutrients they need, and how much they should eat. However, once learned, the staff quickly turn the cubs into healthy young bears who swim and play on their own. Now it's your turn, for you are going to learn fractions as you follow the zoo's staff on their quest to raise Klondike and Snow from cubs to full-grown bears.
I have been an avid fan of Klondike and Snow since I first heard about them a few years ago. Their journey from cub-dom into adult-hood has always intrigued me, so when I came across POLAR BEAR MATH, I knew that I just had to have it. Children will be happy to learn fractions, as at the same time they will have the chance to see how a group of zoo-workers raise abandoned animals, while at the same time be treated to marvelous photographs of the bears at play. This is a wonderful new learning tool that will please everyone. Teachers, adults, and children alike.

WONDERFUL BOOK FOR CHILDREN AGES 6 - 12.......2004-05-13
This is a very factual and easy to read book for young children interested in learning more about the Ragdoll cat and cats in general. Beautiful pictures. Both my daughters loved it and still pick it up just to gaze at the gorgeous fluffy ones!!
the idiot's guide to reviewing books.......2002-12-19
Understand the book you are reviewing before reviewing it.
This book is indeed aimed at a young audience, ages 9-12, not grades 9-12. All books in this series are for struggling readers, hence the simple, large text. The series does a great job of getting kids interested in the topic and interested in reading. Adults who want more detailed information about the cats should read other books. This one is for kids.
Idiot's Guide to Cat Ownership.......2001-08-16
That should be the title of this book! I don't agree with the 9-12 grade reading. There is only 39 pages of text, in HUGE letters, like an early reader book, so there is very little info. There's a 2 page spread with a photo of a cat, with words and arrows identifying the parts of a cat- Whiskers, paws, ears! Two pages of Quick facts about cats- short blurb describing things like their sense of smell, hearing, balance, etc. A page of words to know "breeder-(BREED-ur) someone who breeds and raises cats or other animals Vaccination-(vak-suh-NAY-shun)- you get the gist. The info is elementary, and you can get this and more from other ragdoll cat books.Unless you're ten years old and deciding to buy a >$500 cat, avoid wasting your money on this book!
Not for owners.......2001-08-16
I read this book and was displeased with how it's pictures do not represent the true nature of the ragdoll breed. The information, although correct, was not usefull at all. The book has nothing about owning, raising, breeding, showing, or grooming this breed. I recomend this book only to those who are looking to learn about what the ragdoll cat looks like. \

Book Description
Introducing the easiest and most enjoyable way for parents to encourage their children to read! Recently selected among the Most Outstanding Children's Books of 1998 by the Parent Council and one of the 100 Best Children's Products of 1998, We Both Read is the firs series of books to invite parents and children to share the reading of a book by taking turns reading aloud. Parents read the more sophisticated text on the left-hand pages and the children read the right-hand pages, which have been written at one of three early reading levels. Developed with reading education specialists, this delightful new series brings parents and children together for a wonderful new reading experience and faster reading development!
About this Book: Explore the mystery and wonder of the tropical rain forest! Travel around the equator to Africa, Asia, and South America discovering the world's most fascinating plant and animal life. Trees that give us rubber and chocolate, lizards that change color, and a cat that can fish with its tail are just some of the amazing species that you'll find in the dense foliage of the rain forest. Captivating photographs, along with compelling text, make this book an exciting adventure and a great learning experience.
Customer Reviews:
learn all about the rain forest together.......2005-01-11
This is a great rain forest book. It tells us about various animals that live in the rain forest such as marmosets, lemurs, and capybaras. It also tells us that some of the rain forest is being destroyed and that is not good. Many life saving plants can be found in the rain forest. This book tells us that it's important to take a stand against the deforestation.
This book is one of the We Both Read series where more detailed reading is on the left side of the page for the parent to read and the child's page on the right has only two or three words in larger type.
I would recommend this book for children and parents to read together. The full color photos of the rain forest animals are great. There is a lot to learn in this short book.
Kindergarten Rainforest Theme.......2004-03-06
I decided to teach a rainforest theme in Kindergarten, what an awesome book, the kids love the pictures and can't wait to find out about the different animals. I generally read the child's side, (this is set up for adult and child)to the class so I do not lose them and they LOVE IT. I just wish I could find more for this age.
Another great book for the early reader!.......2001-05-29
I have read several books in this series with my 4 year old daughter. She loves taking turns reading the pages. The books hold her attention much more than other beginning reader books that we have found.

For children, not reference........2003-12-08
This is not a book if you are either are owned by a Sphynx (as I am a humbleservant to mine!!) or if you want to know more about this wonderful breed of cat.
This is a book better suited for children than as a reference book on the breed. Good book for my nieces. You get nothing on breed standard, care and maintenance, special concerns about the cat. Such as, these are NOT hypo-alergenic cats, allergic to cats is allergic to cats, period. For eference material reguarding Sphynx cats lookk to the web, I have yet to find a good book dealing with this breed.
I do not reccomend this book for new or prospective owners of the breed.
not for people who really want to know about the breed.......2001-12-13
i bought this book originally because i own a sphynx and wanted to have some reference material about the breed.
unforunately this book comes across as rich reference material in the description, but is anything but.
it's written as though a parent is reading it to a child, or a child is reading it themselves. (read: language that is very rudimentary)
...they should move this into the children's section and not with the reference material.
i do not recommend this book unless you are specifically purchasing it for a child who is unfamiliar with pets, and wants very very non-specific and general information about a cat.
if you are looking for things specific to the breed such as standards, care and maintenance, common concerns, etc. this is the incorrect material to purchase.
enjoy your sphynx and select the right books.
Book Description
Late one night, a tiny chimpanzee is born at a zoo in Kansas. He seems very weak, and the staff is worried. Will he survive? When the mother shows no interest in her baby, a pediatrician comes in to care for the little chimp. The baby grows strong and healthy, and soon he is big enough to be moved to the Denver Zoo. He is named Jiggs after the doctor who saved him. Jiggs is a lot like human babies. He wears diapers. He plays with his toys. He loves his pets. And he learns all kinds of new skills as he gets older. Follow Jiggs as he grows from a wobbly infant to a wild and wonderful toddler. Along the way you can learn about clocks, calendars, time lines, and other ways of keeping time records.
Customer Reviews:
cute story.......2004-02-12
Chimp Math is a story of a baby chimp who was born at the zoo and his mother would not take care of him. Human doctors took over and the book shows photographs of the chimp named Jiggs as he grows. As the story unfolds it features pages showing clocks, calendars, time lines and other ways of keeping time records based on Jiggs growth and development.
I liked the full color photographs of Jiggs. Heýs funny. He does lots of things that real babies do like wear diapers, play with toys and crawls.
I would recommed this to kids who enjoy stories about monkeys because this one is really neat.

Book Description
Every parent awaits the question: Where do babies come from? First Comes Love is a charming introduction to the birds and the bees, not to mention alligators, spiders, dragonflies, squirrels, peacocks, and--of course--people.
Illustrated by Clare Mackie, whose clever visual jokes and whimsical flourishes will appeal as much to grown-ups as they do to children, the book marries fun rhyming text with fascinating fact to tell a story of love, courtship, and birth across the animal kingdom. Written for the ages of 4 to 8, when kids are at their most curious and least embarrassed, here is the story of the lightning bug-"When the firefly is in a flirting mode, / He scribbles and blinks a special code." The penguin--"Quivering and caressing with flippers and beaks, /
They touch and talk for two full weeks." And the kangaroo--"Kangaroo
babies are rarely seen, / Because they're no bigger than a lima bean." Then below, in captions that amplify the verse, kids learn that every firefly species has its own blinking language, that penguins try to find the same mate year after year, and that a new-born kangaroo stays in his mother's pouch for the first three months.

Has it all.......2006-11-02
this book was great , had lots of information, and made the understanding of love and sex much easier.
I liked it!.......2006-05-05
Well, after reading the Amazon reviews, I wasn't sure about this book, but got it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. No, it's not all about human reproduction (although that is mentioned in there). We have "Where did I come from?" for that, and that does an excellent job. This instead shows how a lot of different animals reproduce and truthfully, I learned some things. Plus, the illustrations were really cute and didn't take long to read. I really liked it and the kids liked it too.
7-8 year olds.......2005-08-27
I like how this book focused on love and attraction, not just the physical mechanics. It was a good seg way in to adding your own moral thoughts.
Confusing & not very informative.......2005-04-10
I got this book thinking it would actually explain the birds and the bees to my daughter. No such luck. Because it's all in rhyme, it doesn't really make much sense to a small child. And it gives trivia without explaining well how babies are actually made. Example: it tells you that "a male octopus captivates/the interest of intended mates/by changing into shimmering stripes/which pleases even the shyest types...etc. etc. How do they actually mate? It doesn't say. If you're looking for a cute little book that could spark some conversation, this is it. If you're looking for a book that is heavy on factual information that will teach your child about the birds and the bees, look elsewhere.
cute but no answers.......2004-08-18
Sweet drawings and somewhat informational (if you are interested in the process of seduction in alligators, spiders, sea horses, and many other animals). But virtually no information about humans. For example, a page has a sperm and an egg cell, but neither the text nor the drawing tells where the two are coming from. Anything about sexuality is hidden behind rhyming text and caricatures of animals. While it's not a bad book to have (my 4- and 6-year-old enjoyed it), it doesn't provide any answers for a child who asks questions.
Customer Reviews:
All in all, a smashin' little book.......2006-02-11
This is a great little book that gives a simplified explanation of special needs for younger children. Teacher Toad gives us 6 special lessons about the different sorts of problems some tadpoles can have... children with uneven development, children with hard to break habits, children who have problems socialising, children who are easily distracted, children who get obsessed with their hobbies, and children who jump to conclusions. In each one he explains what is going on and how the situation can be helped. That is two thirds of the book. The final third is the explanatory notes on special needs for parents and caregivers and notes on developmental differences, which makes it a handy little book for grown ups too. The author is herself diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and has two sons, one of whom is also AS and the other ADHD.

I LOVE BEAGLES.......2000-10-31
As the owner of a beagle, I naturally loved this book. I enjoyed the photographs of the beautiful hounds and I felt this book did a good job of reaching a younger audience. The author clearly loves this winsome little hound and to her credit, treats beagles and beagle owners with respect. I think this is a nice intro book for anyone seriously interested in owning a beagle.
