4 out of 5 stars A superb resource for the dedicated athlete and coach........2001-04-30

This book contains abstracts, and presentations from international seminars on throwing, there are five sections;

1. General throwing, some very good introductory articles

2 Shot, the least well covered section

3 Discus, some very good authors

4 Hammer, one superb article by Bondarchuk, the rest are so-so.

5 Javelin, some very enjoyable articles.

A great book to think your way through the sport, the different authors all bring different ideas to the table.

The varity of different articles stopped it being a five, but buy it for Bondarchuk, Bartonietze, and Grigialkya, they are superior to any other throws authors I have read.

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The resource book I use the most.......2007-07-18

I am constantly using and/or adapting exercises from this book for my classes. Like the previous reviewer, my only complaint is in the format. I wish it were larger and spiral bound, as my copy is getting very beat up from the copy machine! An essential in my resource library.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teachers.......2007-07-10

This book has many activities that can be done. It's a great resource to have in the library of an ESL teacher!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Useful.......2007-05-07

Penny Ur's book "Grammar Practice Activities" is a neat little book with some simple, but very effective activities for a good range of grammar forms.

The activities can be used at a range of different levels, and cover everything from pair to group work. Some require some preparation, and they sometimes come with pictures and other materials. There are also some variations you can try for some, as well. They cover a wide range of grammatical forms, and that will keep the book useful for a long time. The activities are fairly focused on forms, and that means students will almost be forced to use the ones that you are practicing.

Perhaps the only problem I have found with the book is trying to photo copy some of the photos or pictures without damaging the spine too much. The small cover size means that the spine is pretty stressed when flattened out in a photocopier. If it is a heavily used book, you might want to keep a "master copy" of such materials to prolong the life of the book.

This book is simply a very useful, easy-to-use book. Ur has done a great job of presenting some nice activities that are easy to set-up, and very effective for the students. This is a wonderful little book that should be on any shelf.

        5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Resource.......2004-02-21

This book is packed full of useful grammar activities. They are easily classified according to grammar point and can be easily searched for use. I've used the activities numerous times, and there are a lot of great ideas in this book. The only thing that isn't so great is that the pictures have a late 70's or early 80's look, but it's not such a big problem since you can easily get pictures out of magazines or other such resources. Also, the English featured here is British English, so if you're teaching American English, you have to adjust some of the phrases or vocabulary. Other than that, it's great. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Your ESL Library!.......2000-03-02

I borrowed a copy from my ESL instructor while student-teaching. It is FANTASTIC. I have found that the activities proposed in the book can also be modified to fit another activity -- or to even get my own creative juices flowing. There have been times when I felt overwhelmed by all the good examples and couldn't pick just one. It's easy to carry and pack -- don't leave home without it!

          Book Description

Illuminated manuscripts survive in great numbers from the Middle Ages. They are often beautifully preserved, enabling us to appreciate the skilled design and craftsmanship of the people who created them.

Christopher de Hamel describes each stage of production from the preparation of the vellum, pens, paints and inks to the writing of the scripts and the final decoration and illumination of the book. He then examines the role of the stationer or bookshop in co-ordinating book production and describes the supply of exemplars and the accuracy of texts. He follows the careers of a number of specific scribes and illuminators who emerge not as anonymous monks but as identifiable professional lay artisans. He also looks at those who bought the completed books, why they did so, and how much they paid.

His survey ranges from the eleventh century through the golden age of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to the luxurious manuscripts existing at the invention of printing.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to manuscript production.......2004-02-16

Christopher De Hamel's, Scribes and Illuminators is a short book, replete with illustrations, that I read in a single session. It is strictly an introduction rather than a scholarly work. Some topics are covered in more detail than others - the technique of illumination has more coverage than the selection and creation of miniatures or marginalia. The illustrations, in the main, are from medieval manuscripts and depict both the scribe/illuminator at work and examples of finished, and unfinished, pages. The pictures of unfinished pages are particularly useful in illustrating how the scribes and illuminators worked. There are some photographs of the tools used in manuscript production, but a few more would have been nice - especially of the frame used to sew the quires together. Some interesting facts embedded in the text are: parchment tended to curl toward the hair-side of the page because it shrank more, there were a significant number of women scribes, scribes would write around holes made accidentally during the creation of the parchment. Despite the brevity De Hamel manages to cover nearly the whole of manuscript production. And in that light the book is worth reading. However, if you are interested in the minute details of binding, calligraphy, miniatures, marginalia, and/or the tools of the trade you would be better off reading a different book.

5 out of 5 stars Only Buying One Book on this Topic? Get This One!.......2000-07-02

Like all this series, this book is a real gem. Clearly written, interesting, informative, with a fine selection of pictures (most in colour), it's truly amazing how much it covers in a small book. Particularly useful are the contemporary illustrations of scribes and painters at work, showing such details as a scribe's sloping desk with holes to hold his quills and inkhorn (cover illustration). The whole construction of a medieval book is explained, from makig the parchment to the final cover. Examples of unfinished manuscripts, not shown in facimile books, provide fascinating insight into the whole production process. The inclusion of charming pictures such as the self-portrait of a scribe and his apprentice, cursing a mouse running off with the the cheese from their lunch table, brings the lives of these workers into immediate and human detail.

If you are only going to get one book about medieval scribes and illuminators, this is the one to buy.

          Book Description

It is England, in the late fourteenth century, a time when the whim of a lord or the pleasure of a bishop can seal nearly anyone's fate. The printing press has yet to be invented. Books, written only in Latin or Norman French, are rare and costly, painstakingly lettered and illuminated with exquisite paintings---far beyond the reach of ordinary people. But there are cracks in the old feudal order---and in the absolute power of the Church. Finn is a master illuminator who works not only for the Church but also, in secret, for the heretical Oxford cleric John Wycliffe. Under the nose of the powerful Abbot of Broomholm, Finn illuminates pages for Wycliffe---an English translation of the Bible, meant to bring the word of God to the masses. And Finn has another secret, one that will lead both himself and his beloved daughter into ever-increasing peril. Lady Kathryn, the mistress of Blackingham Manor, is a widow who finds herself caught between the King's taxes and the Church's tithes. To protect her sons' inheritance, she strikes a bargain with the abbot---Kathryn will take in the illuminator and his daughter, and gain the monastery's protection. What begins as a hesitant friendship between Finn and Lady Kathryn grows into a passionate alliance that touches off a chain of betrayals, tragedies, and unexpected acts of heroism. Richly detailed and irresistibly compelling, The Illuminator is a glorious novel of love, art, religion, and treachery at an extraordinary turning point in history.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An fair first novel from an author with potential.......2007-08-01

The cover of this novel was so beautiful that my eye was instantly drawn toward it. The jacket made it sound like something that was right up my alley and so I couldn't help but be a bit let down when I finished the book and found that it wasn't quite as strong as that short synopsis made it sound. It is not that it is a bad novel but there is room for improvement.

Vantrease's strength lies in her ability to paint a vivid picture of the past. Her settings are very nicely drawn and she has an obvious eye for period details. I found the setting very believable and oftentimes vibrant.

I think one of the weaknesses of this novel is in the dialogue. The characters are given to overwrought speeches with rather too much frequency and the conversations between them never struck me as quite true.

As for the characters, I found them rather weak. Kathryn was downright shrewish at times and I found it hard to understand just what made her so irresistible to Finn. I was appalled by the way she ultimately treats him and just didn't find it all that believable.

The characters in general were pale, as if Vantrease had an idea of what they were like but didn't quite succeed in making them human. They were always characters to me. I never found myself thinking of them as real people or sympathizing with their struggles.

The pacing was also very awkward at times. An event would occur and then fifty pages later the significance of it and its outcome would finally be addressed. I found this extremely confusing. There needed to be more flow and continuity to the plot in order to make the story more coherent.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful first novel, a mix of tragic romance and history.......2007-06-24

I enjoyed THE ILLUMINATOR and I will definitely pick up the author's second book. It's an historical novel told mostly (but not entirely) from a woman's viewpoint. There's romance (not explicit) and familial relationships as well.

The setting involves the late 1300s when John of Gaunt ruled for the child king Richard II. During this time, the Lollardy movement was well underway and Henry Despenser put down the peasant uprising. There was much friction between the Catholic Church and those who followed what would later become the English Reformation (the Lollards).

The story centers around the lives of Finn (the illuminator), his daughter, Lady Kathryn, her sons, and to a lesser degree, some of her serfs. I don't want to give away the plot, so I'll just say that the romance between Finn and Kathryn is bittersweet; ultimately, it is tragic.

For historical novel purists: I found the history to be peripheral or as background to the story. The story is more than the history, and ultimately overshadows it.

For those who like historical romance: You may be disappointed. Although I found the story to be a fast read, this is not your typical boy-meets-girl-struggles-to-come-to-terms-with-loving-each-other book. It's more literary.

I've not read anything quite like it. In looking at some of Amazon's recommendations, I would say it's most like THE ROSE OF YORK. But Worth does more romanticizing of the times.

1 out of 5 stars Too Many Strings Attached.......2007-04-27

The plotting, writing, and characterizations throughout this novel are convoluted and illogical, poor and desperately detailed, and paper thin like puppets. Events and people come and go without making any sense. The style is marred by too many detail-packed lines ("He waited, nodding encouragement, watching her as she fiddled with the filigree cross he'd given her on her sixth birthday, telling her it had belonged to her mother, telling her to wear it always, thinking it would protect her--not from the devil but from as great an evil." (p. 169)--what sense does that make in the middle of the scene? would Finn really think that a religious object would protect someone?).
The author should have read Pantin's great history, The English Church in the Fourteenth Century, and then she would have avoided so many historical errors.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging look at the middle ages in England.......2007-01-21

Retired school teacher, Brenda R. Vantrease has really done her homework. The details about life in mediaeval England are alone enough to recommend the book. But it's a good yarn, too; and well read on this audio book. There's a bonus interview with the author (this is her first book -- which makes it even more impressive) at the end of the tapes. We should be looking forward to even more good stuff from Ms Vantrease in the future.

2 out of 5 stars All for Not!.......2007-01-03

The story was good but the ending was oh so painful. I would never be able to recommend this book to anyone because of that. :(
