Book Description
Birds that walk underwater. Slugs that mate while suspended in midair. Frogs who star on Hollywood soundtracks. The Pacific Northwest abounds in natural wonders, and here are field guides as interesting as the world they describe. Filled with both amazing and amusing true-life tales about Northwest plants and animals, this new series of uncommon field guides will appeal to the casual observer and the avid naturalist alike. Each of these illustrated books describes more than sixty plants, animals, and natural phenomena of a particular Northwest habitat. Author Patricia Lichen combines standard field guide information about habitat, appearance, and range with delightful and engaging descriptions of the little-known facts, surprising details, and amusing-- even bizarre-- tidbits rarely found in ordinary field guides. Discover how amazing the Northwest natural world really is with these uncommon field guides.
Customer Reviews:
Uncommonly delightful.......2006-08-13
Like all 3 of Lichen's "Uncommon Field Guide" series, "Passionate Slugs..." is uncommonly delightful to poke into. One can read it chapter-by-chapter or just open the book anywhere and delve in. Even if it is an animal or plant you are familiar with, there is a good likelihood that you will discover something new about it in her description. Reading her books is like the joy of discovering an animal or plant and discussing it with a knowledgeable friend. My only complaint is that there is not one of Feltner's detailed illustrations with every single chapter.
delightful book!.......2005-06-17
What a charming guide to backyard creatures of the northwest. The enjoyment I got from reading this book was like a conversation with a witty friend who just happens to know all about the critters and plants in my yard! I found it to be informative, humorous, and very down to earth. I would have appreciated a few more illustrations, but on the whole, I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the creatures and habitat in his/her northwest backyard.
Beyond recognition: the secret life of your back yard.......2001-12-28
Mosquitos, grey squirrels, juncos -- most of us take these ordinary neighbors for granted and find our interest is piqued by more esoteric wildlife. The charm of this book is that it takes the creatures that we recognize already and can expect to see in our own yards, in parks, or hovering above a busy interstate and reveals the unique habits and foibles of each. Other essays shed light on the natural (and unnatural) history of common northwest plants including scotch broom, lawns, and the dreaded blackberry, and even go on to bring our attention to the skies. Each essay can be read independently, or the whole can be devoured at one sitting. By focussing on the mundane, Patricia Lichen and her talented illustrator Linda Feitner increase our appreciation of the richness of our environment.
Everything I Didn't Know About the Critters In Our Yard.......2001-08-14
I enjoyed "Passionate Slugs & Hollywood Frogs" because the writing style made it fun to learn about the skunks, juncos, mice, etc., who live in and around our yard. The information was easy to understand and entertaining. It is the kind of book that I can read myself and share with my grandchildren. I really enjoyed it.
Passionate Slugs and Hollywood Frogs.......2001-08-02
Pat Lichen weaves fascinating scientific information with humor, personal experience, and heartfelt tenderness for the natural world. Linda Feltner's drawings gently accentuate the essays. I'd recommend these books as enjoyable reading and good reference for any household in the Pacific Northwest.
Book Description
When Henri Desgrange began a new bicycle road race in 1903, he saw it as little more than a temporary publicity stunt to promote his newspaper. The 60 cyclists who left Paris to ride through the night to Lyons that first July had little idea they were pioneers of the most famous of all bike races, which would reach its centenary as one of the greatest sporting events on earth. Geoffrey Wheatcroft's masterly history of the Tour de France's first hundred years is not just a hugely entertaining canter through some great Tour stories; nor is it merely a homage to the riders whose names—Coppi, Simpson, Mercx, Armstrong—are synonymous with the event's folly and glory. Focusing too on the race's role in French cultural life, it provides a unique and fascinating insight into Europe's 20th century.

Le tour or le Bored?.......2007-06-25
While this books delivers great antidotes in French, it lacks Je ne sais quoi, perhaps readability in English? This is not to say that, I don't enjoy certain quips in another language dispersed here and there, with that tongue in cheek British humor, ala Monty Python that we have grown to enjoy. Thus said, this book lacks fluidity, and was at times hard to follow and even harder to digest. Le Tour could have been better written, it certainly doesn't lack material given the heroic stamina and personalities that it obvious takes to complete in "the gretest race". The Tour de France, historically, is not lacking in characters and memorable escapades, which has made it both famous and infamous. My opinion is that Mr. Wheatcroft is just boring, perhaps better suited to write about Franco gastronomic specialties, which in this book he passionatly mentions from time to time, rather than the excitment of the tour, which happens to be the subject.
I read through the whole thing wishing that their was another book that could deliver the excitment of the Tour, without the boorishness and forced intellectual humor that ends up being overly dry and overly articulated. On a positive note, the word glossary (race specific terms) at the end of the book was a nice touch as was the pictures in the middle section.
An Incredible Book about The History of Le Tour!!.......2005-06-22
Quite simply, this is the best written, most entertaining book I have read about cycling (I've read about 30 cycling books to date). I was at first quite reluctant to purchase this book; how exciting could a historical recounting of a bike race be? The answer is VERY, if it's written by Geoffrey Wheatcroft.
This author's success comes not from being a die-hard cycling author, but a masterful story teller who interweaves the colorful personalities who participated in Le Tour de France with the social, interpersonal and political impacts of the different eras. This book is a must-read for cycling fans & history-buffs alike. (I can imagine passing-along this book to my father-in-law, who has no interest in cycling but loves reading about the histories of WW1&2.)
My only slight, picky complaint with the book is that the author uses occasional French phrases without translating them. (Note: the phrases are non-cycling specific, & it would be fun to expand my French beyond "peloton", "bidon" & "maillot jaune").
In short, if you love cycling or The Tour, enjoy reading about history, or hearing a well-told story, you owe it to yourself to read this book. Enjoy!!
Book Description
The Tour de France is one of the most grueling, exciting events on the world's sporting calendar. No other event quite matches le Tour for the amount of individual and team effort expanded over its course. This book offers a unique visual journey through the first century of le Tour and with it, the changing face of France. The images in the book cover all aspects of the life of le Tour, from roadside spectators to competitors, marshalls, and the majestic scenery of a beautiful country.
Customer Reviews:
Great photos, short on content........2005-08-09
If you want a Tour book to go on the coffee table, this would be a good choice. It's got great photos ranging across the lifetime of the Tour and has enough written history to clue you into the major players from each era. But as a history book, it is too short on content to be taken seriously.

Book Description
On 4 July 1918, American and Australian troops captured the village of Hamel and the ridge overlooking it. It was not a big battle: the equivalent of one Australian division and one battalion of newly arrived Americans were the only infantry involved. Although Hamel is not a famous named battle it is noteworthy for an increased level of sophistication . At Hamel machines went a long way towards relieving the infantry of the obligation to fight its way forward. After the battle, Haig's Headquarters promulgated its lessons for other commanders.
Among the senior officers who visited Monash's Headquarters was Brigadier-General Bernard Montgomery. The military thinker and former Tank Corps officer, Major-General J.F.C. Fuller, thought Hamel more important in making the reputation of the Tank Corps than the battle of Cambrai.

Book Description
Italic Letters: Calligraphy & Handwriting by Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty is the most comprehensive how-to workbook available on learning italic, with 128 pages of step-by-step, beautifully illustrated instruction. The teaching method is hands-on, containing page after page of examples to trace and letters to copy. Each letter is presented for use with both a monoline pen for informal and rapid writing, and an edged pen, for an elegant, more formal hand, often used for invitations and special correspondence.
Dubay and Getty take you through basic italic, formal italic, chancery italic and cursive italic, four classic hands that will earn you a lifetime of compliments in both your formal calligraphy and everyday handwriting. Once you have mastered the letterforms, the authors show you how to use your calligraphic skills to design and produce posters, invitations, letters, cards, booklets, and envelopes.
This resilient book is for serious calligraphers and those who simply want better penmanship.
Italic Letters is for professional and amateur calligraphers, art teachers, pen enthusiasts, and those interested in the book arts. It's also for students, business people, homemakers; virtually anyone who wants to learn calligraphy and improve handwriting legibility. In this age of computer-generated letters and forms, more than ever, people admire the beauty and personal impact of handwritten communication.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners and advanced calligraphers alike!.......2001-04-08
Barbara (and Inga) have done a superb in offering a great textbook for learning Italic calligraphy; one of the most popular scripts for lettering artists. If you're a beginner you should buy this book just to learn discpline and the basics; if you're an advanced calligrapher than you should buy this for the historical portions and to just say that you own something by the marvelous Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay -- two outstanding and legendary Pacific Northwest calligraphers!
Very good teaching source.......1999-03-26
This book has been quite helpful in learning the fundamentals of itallic Calligraphy. It not only gives you a step by step guide on forming letters, it also gives you a good background in the history of Calligraphy and an understanding of its significance. I especially enjoyed the variations it gives on different letters, allowing the student of Calligraphy to formulate his or her own unique style.
